Raspbian update: first-boot setup wizard and more

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Raspberry Pi (This article and its images were originally posted on Raspberry Pi June 29, 2018 at 04:19AM.)

After a few months of hiding in a dark corner of the office muttering to myself (just ask anyone who sits near me how much of that I do…), it’s time to release another update to the Raspberry Pi desktop with a few new bits and a bunch of bug fixes (hopefully more fixes than new bugs, anyway). So, what’s changed this time around?

Setup wizard

One of the things about Raspbian that has always been a bit unhelpful is that when a new user first boots up a new Pi, they see a nice desktop picture, but they might not have much of an idea what they ought to do next. With the new update, whenever a new Raspbian image is booted for the first time, a simple setup wizard runs automatically to walk you through the basic setup operations.

Localisation

The localisation settings you can access via the main Raspberry Pi Configuration application are fairly complex and involve making separate settings for location, keyboard, time zone, and WiFi country. The first page of the wizard should make this a little more straightforward — once you choose your country, the wizard will show you the languages and time zones used in that country. When you’ve selected yours, the wizard should take care of all the necessary international settings. This includes the WiFi country, which you need to set before you can use the wireless connectivity on a Raspberry Pi 3B+.

Raspbian update June 2018

There will be some special cases — e.g. expatriates using a Pi and wanting to set it to a language not spoken in their country of residence — where this wizard will not give sufficient flexibility. But we hope that for perhaps 90% of users, this one page will do everything necessary in terms of international settings. (The more detailed settings in Raspberry Pi Configuration will, of course, remain available.)

Other settings

The next pages in the wizard will walk you through changing your password, connecting to the internet, and performing an initial software update to make sure you get any patches and fixes that may have been released since your Raspbian image was created.

Raspbian update June 2018

On the last page, you will be prompted to reboot if necessary. Once you get to the end of the wizard, it will not reappear when your Pi is booted. (If you do want to use it again for some reason, just run it manually by typing

sudo piwiz

into a terminal window and pressing Enter.)

Recommended software

Over the last few years, several third-party companies have generously offered to provide software for Pi users, in some cases giving free licenses for software that normally requires a license fee. We’ve always included these applications in our standard image, as people might never find out about them otherwise, but the applications perhaps aren’t all of interest to every user.

So to try and keep the size of the image down, and to avoid cluttering the menus with applications that not everyone wants, we’ve introduced a Recommended Software program which you can find in the Preferences menu.

Raspbian update June 2018

Think of this as our version of the Apple App Store, but with everything in it available for free! Installing a program is easy: just put a tick in the box to the right, and click “OK”. You can also uninstall some of the preinstalled programs: just untick the respective box and click “OK”. You can even reinstall them once you’ve realised you didn’t mean to uninstall them: just tick the box again and click — oh, you get the idea…

As we find new software that we recommend, or as more manufacturers offer us programs, we’ll add them to Recommended Software, so it’ll be kept up to date.

New PDF viewer

Ever since the first version, Raspbian has included the venerable PDF viewer Xpdf. While this program does work, it’s fairly old and clunky, and we’ve been trying to find something better.

In this release, we are replacing Xpdf with a program called qpdfView, which is a much-improved PDF viewer. It has a more modern user interface, it renders pages faster, and it preloads and caches future pages while you’re reading, which should mean fewer pauses spent waiting for the next page to load.

Raspbian update June 2018

If you want something to read in it, we are now including the latest issue of The MagPi as a PDF file — look in the ‘MagPi’ directory in your home directory ‘pi’.

Other updates

The Chromium browser is now at version 65. We’ve also updated the links to our website in the Help menu, and added a new Getting Started option. This links to some really helpful new pages that walk you through getting your Pi up and running and using some of its key features.

If you have volume up/down buttons on your keyboard, these will now control whatever audio output device is selected, rather than only controlling the internal audio hardware. The resolution has also been increased: each button push increases or decreases the volume by 5% rather than 10%.

If you are using the network icon to reconnect to a wireless network, the passcode for the network will be shown in the connection dialog, so you won’t have to type it in again.

In Raspberry Pi Configuration, you can now enable and disable the serial port console independently of the serial port hardware.

The keyboard layout setting dialogue now makes settings that should be correct both in the desktop and also when the Pi is booted to console.

There are various other small bug fixes and tweaks to appearance and behaviour, but they’re mostly only the sort of things you’d spot if you’re a slightly obsessive user interface developer…

How do I get it?

The new image is available for download from the usual place: our Downloads page. We’ve also updated the x86 image with most of the changes, and that’s up on the page as well.

To update an existing image, use the usual terminal command:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Here’s a quick video run-through of the process:

Updating Raspbian on your Raspberry Pi || Raspberry Pi Foundation

How to update to the latest version of Raspbian on your Raspberry Pi.

To install the new PDF viewer (and remove the old one):

sudo apt-get install qpdfview
sudo apt-get purge xpdf

To install the new Recommended Software program:

sudo apt-get install rp-prefapps

Finally, to install the setup wizard (which really isn’t necessary on an existing image, but just in case you are curious…):

sudo apt-get install piwiz

We hope you like the changes — as ever, all feedback is welcome, so please leave a comment below!

11,000 Signatures Wasn’t Enough to Keep Eric Lundgren Out of Prison

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to iFixit (This article and its images were originally posted on iFixit June 15, 2018 at 07:17PM.)

Today, Eric Lundgren turned himself in to the Sheridan Federal Correctional Institution, where he will spend the next fifteen months isolated from society, the internet, and his business. His crime? Helping recyclers restore Windows onto Dell laptops.

Eric is an e-waste recycling pioneer—one man’s trash is literally his treasure. He was one of the first recyclers handling lithium car batteries at scale. By developing new, innovative testing processes, he was able to reuse over 50% of a car’s dead battery cells for new products. To prove the batteries still worked, he built a car out of other people’s trash and set the Guiness world record for the furthest traveled on a single charge: 999.5 miles.

Eric is a force for good in the world. But for now, that force will be walled off from the world behind razor wire and armed guards.

That’s a shame, and it’s Microsoft’s fault. While the DOJ prosecuted the case, they were aided every step of the way by ‘expert witnesses’ from Microsoft’s anti-trafficking team. Plenty of people have dug into Microsoft’s claims and the weeds of his case, but at this point the details are moot. Eric’s turned himself in and he’s not going anywhere for a good while.

That’s a tragedy, and it didn’t need to happen. There are a lot of good people at Microsoft and they make some tremendous products. We love the XBox One and its super-repairable controller. But Eric is just the latest victim—Microsoft has been systematically stymieing your right to fix the things you own. From insidious warranty-void-if-removed stickers to sending lobbyists to fight common-sense right to repair laws, Microsoft has willfully made the e-waste problem worse. And now they’re imprisoning the very guy who was working to clean up their mess.

But Eric’s going down fighting. Yesterday, he accompanied Nathan Proctor from the Public Interest Research Group to drop off a petition signed by 11,464 people demanding that Microsoft change their ways.

“By repairing products instead of buying new ones—and helping others do the same—Lundgren is working to change a system that feeds on consumption and fills our country with abandoned electronics.” said Proctor. “More of us need to stand up for the right to repair, and his case is helping spread the word.”

Eric’s in good spirits—and we’ve got a picture to prove it. Let’s make sure his sacrifice means something.

Cortana Software Could Help Anyone Unlock Your Windows 10 Computer

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Hacker News (This article and its images were originally posted on The Hacker News June 13, 2018 at 10:44AM.)

Cortana, an artificial intelligence-based smart assistant that Microsoft has built into every version of Windows 10, could help attackers unlock your system password.

With its latestpatch Tuesday release, Microsoft has pushed an important update to address an easily exploitable vulnerability in Cortana that could allow hackers to break into a locked Windows 10 system and execute malicious commands with the user’s privileges.

In worst case scenario, hackers could also compromise the system completely if the user has elevated privileges on the targeted system.

Screen Shot 2018-06-17 at 7.43.11 AM

The elevation of privilege vulnerability, tracked as

CVE-2018-8140

and reported by McAfee security researchers, resides due to Cortana’s failure to adequately check command inputs, which eventually leads to code execution with elevated permissions.

“An Elevation of Privilege vulnerability exists when Cortana retrieves data from user input services without consideration for status,” Microsoft explains. “An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could execute commands with elevated permissions.”

Microsoft has classified the flaw as “important” because exploitation of this vulnerability requires an attacker to have physical or console access to the targeted system and the targeted system also needs to have Cortana enabled.

Cedric Cochin of McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research (ATR) team has published technical details of the flaw, and also provided a step-by-step proof-of-concept video tutorial, showing how he hijacked a locked Windows 10 computer by carrying out a full password reset using Cortana.

“Cochin discovered that by simply typing while Cortana starts to listen to a request or question on a locked device, he could bring up a search menu. Cochin didn’t even have to say anything to Cortana, but simply clicked on the “tap and say” button and started typing in words,” a blog post on McAfee explained.

Cochin represents three different attack vectors, demonstrating how the Cortana flaw could be used for various nefarious purposes, such as retrieving confidential information, logging into a locked device and even run malicious code from the locked screen.

McAfee recommends users to turn off Cortana on the lock screen in order to prevent such attacks. Although Microsoft has patched the vulnerability with its latest security updates released yesterday, many PCs will not be running the latest updates just yet.

Scientists Have Invented a Software That Can ‘See’ Several Minutes Into The Future

Your daily selection of the latest science news!

According to ScienceAlert (This article and its images were originally posted on ScienceAlert June 14, 2018 at 03:18AM.)

Taking predictions to a new, borderline creepy level.

Most of us are used to technology predicting the words we want to type. Soon this kind of software will be able to look even further into the future to predict actions we’ve barely considered ourselves.

This isn’t some creepy Minority Report style of precognition. Not yet at least. But it could see us get robot butlers that hand us a decent coffee before we even ask for it.

A process developed by computer scientists from the University of Bonn in Germany has successfully pushed the boundaries on how computers can accurately anticipate human behaviours minutes ahead.

Current generations of anticipatory software are only interested in knowing what we’ll do in the next few seconds.

“We want to predict the timing and duration of activities minutes or even hours before they happen,” says research team leader Jürgen Gall.

The goal was to see if a program could list a sequence of actions up to five minutes into the future based on watching the first few steps of an activity.

Specifically, they trained software to guess what a chef would do next by showing it a number of videos of people making breakfast or a salad.

You can see some examples below.

They then showed the program a completely new video of another person preparing a similar meal, and watched how it guessed upcoming steps and their respective duration.

For you or I, this isn’t exactly a challenge. If you see somebody grab a bowl and some cereal, you can be pretty sure they’ll go for the milk next, which will take 5 seconds, and maybe then cross the kitchen for a spoon.

But this type of reasoning isn’t a walk in the park for computers.

The team tested two approaches using different types of artificial neural network: one that anticipated future actions and reflected before anticipating again, and another that built a matrix in one hit before crunching the probabilities.

As you’d expect, the deeper they looked into the future, the more mistakes they made.

“Accuracy was over 40 percent for short forecasting periods, but then declined the more the algorithm needed to look into the future,” says Gall.

The reflective approach did a little better than the matrix method when looking at the next 20 seconds, but the two different neural networks were equally matched when looking beyond 40 seconds.

At the extreme end, the scientists discovered their trained program could correctly predict an action and its duration 3 minutes in the future roughly 15 percent of the time.

That might not sound impressive, but it does establish solid ground for future artificial intelligence that could potentially develop super-human foresight.

The team will present their results at this year’s IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in Salt Lake City, which we hope will generate some interest in predictive software.

There’s still plenty of ground to cover, especially since the end goal would be to have programs build up enough experience on their own without a need to be trained.

Forget predicting crimes before they happen: we have a long way to go before we need to worry about that kind of future. Our best algorithms struggle to predict which criminals will reoffend, let along guess who will break the law in the first place.

What it could do is help us improve the intelligence of self-driving vehicles, or help us out around the home by switching on a stove the moment we pull out a lasagne.

Maybe it will finally give us a version of Clippy the office assistant who would predict at a glance that you really don’t want any help writing that letter.

Apple’s iOS 12 improves performance, even on your old iPhone

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Engadget (This article and its images were originally posted on Engadget June 4, 2018 at 01:24PM.)

As expected from Apple’s developer-focused showcase here at WWDC, here’s your first glimpse of iOS 12. Previewing what’s headed to your iPhone (and iPad) later this year, it might not look all that different. CEO Tim Cook teased that the customer at the center of everything — and perhaps nothing illustrates it better than its updated mobile OS. Craig Federighi noted that iOS 12 will be supported by all the same devices that iOS 11 ran on — it’s the biggest range of supported devices yet.

How EARTH is made

We use poly resin density, 3D printing, and paint pigment ratios to create EARTH. Then, we refine our models to ensure the surface details—ocean, land, mountains—are clearly visible

EARTH is made with an eco-friendly paint and production process. 3D printing is extremely precise, and levels down to 0.05 millimeters—printing error has a precision of 0.025 millimeters, printing resolution reaches 4000 DPI, and up to 0.006 millimeter per pixel. We then finish with a hand painted layer on every single unit.

Simple bug could lead to RCE flaw on apps built with Electron Framework

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Hacker News

A critical remote code execution vulnerability has been discovered in the popular Electron web application framework that could allow attackers to execute malicious code on victims’ computers.

Electron is an open source app development framework that powers thousands of widely-used desktop applications including WhatsApp, Skype, Signal, WordPress, Slack, GitHub Desktop, Atom, Visual Studio Code, and Discord.

Besides its own modules, Electron framework also allows developers to create hybrid desktop applications by integrating Chromium and Node.js framework through APIs.

Since Node.js is a robust framework for server-side applications, having access to its APIs indirectly gives Electron-based apps more control over the operating system installed on the server.

To prevent unauthorised or unnecessary access to Node.js APIs, Electron framework by default sets the value of “webviewTag” to false in its “webPreferences” configuration file, which then sets “nodeIngration” to false.

This configuration file with the hardcoded values of some parameters was introduced in the framework to prevent real-time modifications by malicious functions, i.e., by exploiting a security vulnerability like cross-site scripting (XSS).

Moreover, if an app developer skips or forgets to declare “webviewTag: false” in the configuration file, even then the framework by default considers the value of “nodeIntegration” as false, to take a preventive measure.

Screen Shot 2018-05-14 at 7.10.45 PM.png

However, Trustwave researcher Brendan Scarvell has released proof-of-concept (PoC) code that attackers can inject into targeted applications running without “webviewTag” declared, by exploiting a cross-site scripting flaw, to achieve remote code execution.

The exploit re-enables “nodeIntegration” in runtime, allowing attackers to gain unauthorised control over the application server and execute arbitrary system commands.

It should be noted that the exploit would not work if the developer has also opted for one of the following options:

  • nativeWindowOption option enabled in its webPreferences.
  • Intercepting new-window events and overriding event.newGuest without using the supplied options tag.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2018-1000136, was reported to the Electron team by Scarvell earlier this year and affected all versions of Electron at the time of discovery.

Electron developers patched the vulnerability in March 2018 with the release of versions 1.7.13, 1.8.4, and 2.0.0-beta.4.

So, app developers should ensure their applications are patched, or at least not vulnerable to this issue.

For more technical details on the Electron vulnerability and PoC exploit code, you can head on to the Trustwave’s blog post.

It should also be noted that the Electron bug has nothing to do with the recently discovered flaw in Signal app, which has also recently patched a critical cross-site scripting vulnerability that leads to remote code execution, whose full technical details are scheduled to be published exclusively on The Hacker News this evening.

Windows 10 on ARM has been successfully installed on a Lumia 950XL

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to On MSFT

Windows 10 Mobile may be dead, but there are still passionate technology hackers out there trying to breath some new life into Microsoft’s last Lumia phones. Indeed, developer Ben Imbushuo has managed to install a working version of Windows 10 on ARM on a Lumia 950XL, proving that the OS can work on a device with an older Snapdragon 810 processor and 3G of RAM (via MSPoweruser).

As you can expect, such hacks always come with some caveats, including the loss of all phone capabilities as well as networking overheating issues. Imbushuo shared its method to hack Windows 10 on ARM on a Lumia 950XL on Twitter, and it involves the use of WPInternals as well other tricks you probably don’t want to try if you don’t want to brick your precious handset.

Even though this is a pretty cool hack, it’s worth reminding that Windows 10 on ARM is a desktop OS that was never meant to run on a 5.7″ smartphone. The touch targets on the classic Windows desktop are way too small for human fingers, and this is why Microsoft is reportedly be working on a common Windows shell (known as the Composable Shell) for multiple form factors, including mobile devices. We may finally see the result of this work with Microsoft’s rumored Andromeda mobile device, which already appeared in many patents since last year.

What if Windows XP came back in 2018? Check out this fun concept video

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to On MSFT

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP a long time ago, but the nearly 17-year-old operating system still holds a special place in the hearts of many Windows and Microsoft fans. That brings us to wonder, what would Windows XP look like if it still was in development in 2018? Well, one YouTuber sets out to answer that question with a “Windows XP 2018 Edition” concept video.

As you can see, the video showcases a remastered Windows XP with many fluent and modern looking user interface elements. The login screen, power menu, and taskbar in this concept all get touches of modern Windows 10 elements, blended with the classic Windows XP coloring.

Our personal favorite happens to be the reimagined Start Menu, which keeps the Windows XP style layout but adds modern live tiles alongside. Other cool elements of the video include a remasted mail app, File Explorer, and a Windows Timeline UI that’s clearly inspired by Windows 10’s Fluent Design.

Even though it’s nothing but a concept. it is still safe to say this is a pretty cool video. Let us know in the comments about your favorite moment from this concept video.

Uber Finds Deadly Accident Likely Caused By Software Set to Ignore Objects On Road

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Information

Uber has determined that the likely cause of a fatal collision involving one of its prototype self-driving cars in Arizona in March was a problem with the software that decides how the car should react to objects it detects, according to two people briefed about the matter.

The car’s sensors detected the pedestrian, who was crossing the street with a bicycle, but Uber’s software decided it didn’t need to react right away. That’s a result of how the software was tuned. Like other autonomous vehicle systems, Uber’s software has the ability to ignore “false positives,” or objects in its path that wouldn’t actually be a problem for the vehicle, such as a plastic bag floating over a road. In this case, Uber executives believe the company’s system was tuned so that it reacted less to such objects. But the tuning went too far, and the car didn’t react fast enough, one of these people said.

Microsoft reveals the future of its Fluent Design for Windows 10

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Verge

Microsoft first unveiled its Fluent Design changes for Windows 10 at Build last year, adding subtle animations to many apps and core parts of Windows. We’ve seen a number of changes to the design of apps in the Fall Creators Update and the recent April 2018 Update, and now Microsoft is unveiling some future Fluent Design plans today at Build 2018.

During a session on Fluent Design at Build today, Microsoft unveiled a number of new subtle changes that will appear in Windows 10 apps this year. Microsoft is using shadow effects across Fluent Design, alongside modernizing context menus and implementing consistent back button controls in apps.

The changes make for a more refined version of Fluent Design, and should hopefully avoid the somewhat inconsistent implementation of Fluent across Microsoft’s own first-party Windows 10 apps. Third-party app developers will need to adopt the Fluent controls to get access to these newly designed elements in their apps, and even Microsoft will need to bring these to its Windows applications.

The shadow effects for Windows 10 apps provide more depth in apps, and Microsoft is also emphasizing the use of color. All of these subtle additions should add up to prettier apps, but Microsoft is also acting on feedback over the touch-focused UI elements of Fluent Design.

A number of the controls you find in Universal Windows Apps that use Fluent Design are rather large, and optimized for tablets and touchscreen devices. Microsoft admits that its heard from developers that the UI is too big, especially for mouse and keyboard users. It’s balancing that out with smaller controls, and even a compact mode that’s designed for more dense and complex applications.

Microsoft is even tweaking the back button placement in Windows 10 apps to make it more consistent. At the moment app developers can place a back button within the app, or at the very top, but it’s not always clear for Windows 10 users. The navigation changes for Fluent Design apps also include support for keyboard shortcuts and even the Xbox One controller to navigate around apps.

All of these Fluent Design changes are being introduced this year, allowing developers to take advantage of them in Windows 10 apps. Microsoft is slowly changing the design direction of Windows 10 and modernizing apps in the process, and these subtle changes help freshen up the overall look and feel of Windows.

Stock Android vs Android One vs Android Go

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Android Authority

What’s the difference between stock Android, Android One, and Android Go? Each is a flavor of Android, each originates from Google and all have a few things in common. But there are some big differences in the way in which smartphone makers use the open source software, how security updates are released, what pre-installed apps are included, and more. Today we’re clearing up any confusion.

Note: For clarity, we’re defining stock Android as whatever Google ships on its own hardware. There are obviously differences between the Android found on Nexus phones and that found on Pixels, but given the demise of the Nexus program, we’ll be referring to the Pixels’ software as stock Android throughout what follows.

The (normal) Android experience

The way it works for a traditional OEM like Samsung or LG or Huawei would be that Google publishes the source code for Android – part of its Android Open Source Project (AOSP) – and then anybody can take that code and build around it for a smartphone or any other development board.

On top of that, Google has services such as the Google Play Store and apps like YouTube and Google Maps, but they’re not part of the Android Open Source Project. Therefore to get a ‘normal’ Android smartphone you need to take the source code from Google, but you also need to have certification so you can use their apps, which is known as Google Mobile Services. Most OEMs add their own variations, skins, or what they see as improvements to the Android OS on their smartphones such as Samsung’s TouchWiz (now known as Samsung Experience), Sense from HTC or EMUI from Huawei. Not all of these have been good, but most have become better through the years.

On top of these familiar variations on Android that most people will have used, we also have these three variations of more “pure” Android.

Stock Android

Google Pixel software example screens

Historically, stock Android is what you would get on devices in the Nexus line like the Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P. While there were some differences in software between the last Nexuses and the first Pixels, now that the Nexus line has been officially deprecated (barring six remaining months or so of security patches) we’ll use the term stock Android to refer to whatever software Google is shipping on its own devices right now.

These devices actually get Android directly from Google, so as soon as there’s a change that Google wants to ship out, it comes directly to the phone without delay. Naturally, there’s increasing demand for stock Android as it’s bloatware-free, gets updated swiftly, and doesn’t have anything “extra” from an OEM to slow it down. They’re not for everyone and some less technical users may prefer to have a bunch of preinstalled apps to avoid needing to download them on the Play Store, but for enthusiasts and moderately capable users, stock Android has a lot to like.

Android One

Android One software example screens

Then there’s Android One, which was originally launched in India in 2014 and was aimed at low-end phones. Over the years, Android One has actually grown beyond its original purpose to include much higher-end phones than was originally intended, like the Moto X4, which we’ll see later.

For devices with Android One, Google actually offers software development services to manufacturers. So perhaps a handset maker is good at building hardware, marketing, and has retail experience, but they’re not good at software. In this case, Google offers them Android One and commits to sending updates and security patches for an agreed time period, directly to the handsets.

While there is little said publicly about this, Android One is likely a paid service. Android is, of course, open source, the Android One programme is a service on top of this, so it would make sense that Google charges a fee to OEMs like Nokia, a major partner with Android One, for handling their software needs. If there is a cost, it may be offset in that Google itself benefits from having more users on Android, in turn receiving more traffic to its search engines and using its apps, which allows it to place more ads in front of more users.

Android Go

Android Go software example screens

Finally, there’s Android Go. This flavor of Android replaces the original Android One programme and is specifically for low-end devices. It’s a cut-down version, so it doesn’t have as many pre-installed apps and has deliberately ‘lite’ or ‘Go’ versions of Google apps, like Maps Go and Gmail Go, which are aimed specifically at running smoothly on low-end devices.

The big difference between Android Go and Android One is that Android Go doesn’t come directly from Google – Google sends it to a maker like Nokia, and then Nokia releases it. This also means that Nokia has to release updates and upgrades when they’re pushed out from Google, adding in a delay that isn’t there with stock or Android One. Android Go hasn’t been seen by many in more developed countries, but that will change over time as it picks up steam.

Stock Android vs Android One vs Android Go: The on-device differences

Google pixel, Moto X Android One and Nokia 1

To check on the differences between these flavors, we have three devices, each with a different Android variant:

  • First is the Google Pixel, which is has got stock Android on it, comes with Android 8.1 Oreo and has security updates including April, and Gary’s video was shot in the month of April.
  • The Motorola Moto X4 which is an Android One device and that has Android 8.0 Oreo and it has security updates up to March.
  • Finally, the Nokia 1, which has Android 8.1 Go on it, but it has security updates only up until January.

There are some cosmetic differences between how each Android version looks, for things like widgets, wallpapers, and colors.

Stock Android, Android One and Android Go home screens

Android One devices such as the Moto X4 come with the most pre-installed apps, like Google Translate. The Pixel has the bare minimum of apps, while the Nokia 1 has very few apps preinstalled (although all apps are, of course, downloadable from the Play Store). It is worth noting some apps are the same, but other apps can be quite different, such as the camera app, which depends on the hardware available to the camera software.

Wrap-up

In a nutshell, stock Android comes directly from Google for Google’s hardware like the Pixel range. Google is also responsible for providing updates and upgrades. Android One also comes directly from Google, but this time for non-Google hardware and as with stock Android, Google provides updates and patches. Android Go replaces Android One for low-end phones and provides a more optimized experience for less powerful devices. Unlike the other two flavors, though, the updates and security fixes come via the OEM.

Have you tried a device with Android One or Android Go? How did you like it? Let us know in the comments below.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update: the 10 best new features

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According toe Verge

Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 update is arriving for PCs and tablets today. Like the previous Fall Creators Update, it’s full of small features that improve Windows 10. Microsoft is only adding one major feature with this update, and it’s the Timeline feature that lets you resume where you left off across multiple Windows 10 machines.

Elsewhere there’s easy sharing, quick Bluetooth pairing, a dictation feature, and the ability to mute tabs in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft is also continuing to tweak and improve the Fluent Design system it introduced with the Fall Creators Update. You’ll notice more hover effects when you’re using your mouse in the Start menu or notification center, and there’s a new blur effect on the taskbar. I’ve been testing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update for months now, and these are my favorite new additions.

Timeline

Timeline is the major new feature here, and it replaces the familiar Task View button that shows what apps are currently running on a system. Timeline lets you see what apps are running, but also what apps and activities you’ve used on your Windows 10 PC in the past 30 days. These activities and apps sync across multiple machines, so if you’ve been using a laptop for a document you can easily pick up the same activity on a desktop PC that you’re also signed into.

You can also combine Timeline with Microsoft Edge for iOS and Android, and access the smartphone browser history on your PC. Microsoft is updating its mobile Edge apps to support this, and it’s one of the main reasons you might use Timeline. If you’re concerned over the privacy aspects of having documents, apps, and activity history in your Task View, Microsoft disables the device sync by default and you can disable activity history.

Dictation

Windows has had a variety of dictation tools over the years, but Microsoft is creating a quick way to access the built-in Windows 10 version with the April 2018 Update. You can launch it with the windows key + H keyboard shortcut, and it will let you dictate into any app. I even wrote this part of the article using the dictation tool, and if you’ve got a good mic it works really well.

Microsoft Edge tab muting and PWAs

Chrome added tab muting recently, and now Microsoft is bringing the same feature to Edge. You can mute loud and annoying websites with this feature, and spare any audio blasting out of your speakers. Microsoft has also tweaked the performance and design of Edge. Microsoft Edge certainly feels better to use as a default browser with this update, but it still needs work to truly compete with Chrome.

Microsoft is also adding support for Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) in this April 2018 update. PWAs are essentially web apps, but they have the full support of Google, Apple, and now Microsoft across mobile and desktop operating systems. This could improve the Windows 10 app situation, and we’re expecting to hear a lot more about PWAs for Windows 10 at Microsoft’s Build conference in May.

Fix blurry apps

Scaling desktop apps has always been an issue in Windows, but this latest April 2018 Update is trying to make blurry apps a thing of the past. Windows 10 will now detect if an app is blurry because of a monitor change or if you docked a laptop, and it will attempt to scale it better to stop apps from scaling too small or blurry.

Audio preferences per app

Microsoft is adding in some great new audio features with this Windows 10 April 2018 Update. You can now set the input or output audio devices per application. You could have Spotify audio blasting out of your speakers, while your browser audio comes through a headset. The new audio settings let you customize both the input and output per application, so it’s also useful if you use different microphones across a variety of apps.

Quick Bluetooth pairing

Microsoft is adding a simple and quick way to pair Bluetooth accessories. Windows 10 will now produce a notification to quickly connect to a Bluetooth peripheral and pair it. Microsoft is supporting its Surface Precision Mouse for now, and the company is working with Logitech and others to ensure additional hardware will support this quick way to Bluetooth pair in the future.

Windows Defender notification reduction

Ever get annoyed with those Windows Defender notifications that tell you Microsoft’s anti-virus just scanned your machine and it’s fine? Yeah, who cares. With the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, you can now suppress these notifications so you’re not told every single time there’s a successful scan.

Nearby sharing

Nearby sharing lets you easily share websites, photos, or documents to nearby Windows 10 machines. It’s not a feature you’re probably going to use all that often, but it works over Bluetooth and is similar to Apple’s AirDrop feature. You can share to devices that are colleagues or friends nearby, and it’s a lot quicker than emailing over a file. Nearby sharing is disabled by default, and you can set it to only receive files from your own devices or everyone nearby. Hopefully Microsoft adds the option to customize this further in the future so you can only receive from contacts.

Focus Assist

Microsoft is changing and updating its do-not-disturb mode for Windows 10 with this new update. Previously known as Quiet Hours, Focus Assist is a smarter way of stopping notifications popping up when you’re busy. Focus Assist will now automatically mute notifications when you’re playing a game or projecting your presentation to a screen. This stops annoying notifications during a gaming session, or equally important meetings when you don’t want your emails, messages, and other notifications being displayed to the whole conference room.

You can also let particular apps break through and still trigger notifications, which is useful if you have a messaging app that you still want to see notifications from while you’re playing a game.

Gaming changes and Xbox game bar

Microsoft is making some neat gaming-focused changes to Windows 10 with this update. You can now customize graphics performance per game, allowing you to set games to high performance or power saving. This is particularly useful if you’re using a laptop that’s capable of gaming, but you want certain games not to draw the best performance in order to save battery life. The new feature is available in “graphics settings” in the main settings app. Microsoft is also redesigning the Xbox game bar so it now has a white or black theme with this update.

The Military Just Created An AI That Learned How To Program Software

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Futurism

Tired of writing your own boring code for new software? Finally, there’s an AI that can do it for you.

BAYOU is an deep learning tool that basically works like a search engine for coding: tell it what sort of program you want to create with a couple of keywords, and it will spit out java code that will do what you’re looking for, based on its best guess.

The tool was developed by a team of computer scientists from Rice University who received funding both from the military and Google. In a study published earlier this month on the preprint server arXiv, they describe how they built BAYOU and what sorts of problems it can help programmers solve.

Basically, BAYOU read the source code for about 1500 Android apps, which comes out to 100 million lines of Java. All that code was fed through BAYOU’s neural net, resulting in AI that can, yes, program other software.

If the code that BAYOU read included any sort of information about what the code does, then BAYOU also learned what those programs were intended to do along with how they work. This contextual information is what lets the AI write functional software based on just a couple of key words and basic information about what the programmer wants.

Computer science majors, rejoice: your homework might be about to get much easier. And teaching people how to code may become simpler and more intuitive, as they may someday use this new AI to generate examples of code or even to check their own work. Right now, BAYOU is still in the early stages, and the team behind it is still proving their technology works.

No, this is not that moment in which AI becomes self-replicating; BAYOU merely generates what the researchers call “sketches” of a program that are relevant to what a programmer is trying to write. These sketches still need to be pieced together into the larger work, and they may have to be tailored to the project at hand.

But even if the technology is in its infancy, this is a major step in the search for an AI programmer, a longstanding goal for computer science researchers. Other attempts to create something like BAYOU required extensive, narrow constraints to guide programmers towards the correct type of code. Because BAYOU can get to work with just a couple of keywords, it’s much less time-intensive, and much easier to use overall, for the human operators.

Tesla Autopilot keeps impressing owners with its latest software update

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Electrek

After Tesla started pushing a new Autopilot update to the fleet last week, we reported on some of the first drive videos showing impressive improvements to Tesla’s semi-autonomous driver assist system.

Now the update has reached more Tesla owners and they have been able to test the new software more thoroughly – giving us a better look at the latest version of Autopilot.

The update works on Autopilot 2.0/2.5 cars and owners who reached out to Electrek are seeing a significant improvement in lane detection, a reduction of “ping-ponging” within a lane, and a generally better experience when Autosteer is activated.

As we previously reported, the update is the same that was beta-tested a month ago and features a brand new and heavier neural net to feed Tesla’s computer vision technology.

It’s the first major update since Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s new head of AI, took over the leadership of the computer vision team at Tesla.

He called this new version (2018.10.4) a “fairly extensive rewrite” of the driver assist system’s software and added that they are still polishing it:

Our article that he is referencing was only “early feedback” as he mentioned with a few quick first drive videos, but now owners had more time with the update and it also reached a wider number of Autopilot 2.0 Tesla owners in the fleet.

It means that we get to see the system in operation in a lot more different environments and conditions with more opinions on its performance by different owners.

Here are a few of the most interesting ones in our opinion:

This one gives a good luck at the performance of the system in local roads with clear markings:

Here’s what the driver had to say about the update:

“Big improvements in this version. Lane centering seems noticeably improved. Turning, while still generally staying within lanes, is sharper and is keeping the car more “centered” in the lane. Still no speed limit signs, local road lane change, or displaying vehicles in adjacent lanes, but one area of BIG improvement was detection of stopped cars. The car started stopping far earlier than I’d ever seen before on HW2 and drifted to a stop slowly and comfortably.”

Now here’s another good video demonstration of the latest update on local roads, but in a more rural environment with worse lane markings:

Tesla owners like to test new Autopilot updates on local roads presumably because it’s a lot more impressive to watch, but the system is still currently more geared toward highway driving, which is where Tesla recommends to use it.

Here’s a great video to show the system’s performance on the highway with the current update:

We can see a great improvement especially to the auto lane change feature, which is now a lot smoother.

The test of going by off-ramps also showed impressive performance from Autopilot which didn’t get confused about taking the ramp like it sometimes would in the past.

And here are a few more good examples of improvements with the latest update for good measure:

It’s 2018 and Android phones still can’t compare to the iPhone’s Taptic Engine

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Android Central – Android Forums, News, Reviews, Help and Android Wallpapers

Just like on your favorite gaming controller, good haptic feedback can make all the difference in the world on your phone.

You’ve probably heard of Apple’s Taptic Engine before. It’s the vibration motor that first appeared on the iPhone 6S, eventually running out the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and consequent models. It’s also what allowed Apple to replicate the clicking button of the old days on newer iPhones with nothing more than a firm buzz under a pressure-sensitive portion of the glass. Subtle as it may be, the Taptic Engine has made a huge difference in the overall experience of using an iPhone.

Meanwhile, Android phones haven’t exactly made haptic feedback a high priority, with most phones limited to only a few different settings for vibration intensity. Most users probably don’t notice the difference, largely because they’ve likely never experienced the iPhone’s Taptic Engine, but spending even a few hours with a modern iPhone can make it hard to go back to the rattly motors of most Android phones.

What’s so great about the Taptic Engine?

Remember that HTC phone you used to have that sounded like it was going to explode every time you got a notification? Remember getting scared half to death because you left your phone on the table and the vibrations practically shook the entire room?

The Taptic Engine focuses on more subtle and focused vibrations. Unlike a lot of other phones, the iPhone doesn’t aggressively alert you of a new text or email; it’s more like a tap or a knock in your hands. But the Taptic Engine isn’t special just because it’s gentle; it’s because nearly every interaction with it is different.

Thanks to the Taptic Engine, getting a text won’t cause an earthquake with your iPhone.

When you get a text, the iPhone vibrates along with your notification tone, matching the dynamics with softer and harder pulses. Same goes for phone calls — you can really take advantage of this by setting different ringtones for certain callers. Even with the phone set on vibrate, you can literally feel who’s calling.

The Taptic Engine works great alongside the iPhone’s 3D Touch display, as well. As I mentioned before, the non-moving home button on newer iPhones (save for the iPhone X, which eliminates the home button entirely) is just a pressure-sensitive portion of the front glass. The “click” is emulated by the Taptic Engine, and you can adjust how hard you need to press down — and how strongly it vibrates back at you — in the settings.

You can also feel the effects of 3D Touch and the Taptic Engine on the home screen and throughout the UI; pressing an icon on your home screen with a bit of force will prompt a small buzz and open a contextual menu for the corresponding app. Similarly, you can 3D Touch a module in Control Center to open additional options — again, with a light haptic response.

The Taptic Engine isn’t great because of any one feature; it’s a series of nuanced interactions that make the iPhone more enjoyable to use.

Which Android phones get the closest?

I’ve seen a lot of people clamor over the great haptic feedback on the Pixel 2, and it’s certainly better than that of any Pixel or Nexus before it. But after buying a Pixel 2, along with an iPhone X, earlier this month (for my fiancee and myself, respectively) and using both side by side … let’s be honest, it’s not even close. It doesn’t feel rattly like other Android phones, which is a huge plus, but there’s really no correspondence between the vibration motor and the different actions on your phone.

The LG V30 has the best haptic response of any Android phone I’ve tried, and it’s not even close.

LG gets a lot closer to greatness with its HD TouchSense technology on the V30. Rather than using the same two or three vibration settings throughout the entire UI, LG spent some time configuring parts of its software to exhibit small details in the haptic feedback, much like on the iPhone. Pressing one of the navigation keys feels nice, with a quick tap-like response, but the best showcase of the V30’s high-quality actuator is the camera software.

If you personally carry a V30, you already know what I’m talking about. Tapping the shutter button to take a photo actually sort of feels like taking a photo with a real camera because the button clicks back at you. If you dive into manual controls, scrolling lists will click back at you as if you were spinning a dial. It’s one of my favorite uses of what LG calls “HD haptics,” and something even the iPhone doesn’t do, because, well — the camera doesn’t have manual controls.

When I was formulating this article, my colleague Daniel Bader mentioned that Sony’s newly announced Xperia XZ2 has some pretty great haptics of its own, and while I haven’t yet tried it for myself, it definitely has my interest. In short, the “Dynamic Vibration System,” as Sony likes to call it, uses a larger than normal vibration motor and buzzes along with movies and music. Unfortunately, Daniel also says that Sony’s motor isn’t as accurate as that of the V30 or iPhone X in general, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Is it really that big a deal?

If you’re coming away from this article thinking “it doesn’t matter that much,” I don’t blame you. Haptic feedback will vary in importance from person to person, but it’s hard to imagine calling poor haptics a deal-breaker on an otherwise attractive phone.

Still, the more I use the iPhone X it’s becoming increasingly noticeable when I pick up another phone and feel just how far behind other vibration motors are. I sincerely hope LG continues to integrate its fantastic TouchSense system, and hopefully other OEMs will soon follow suit.

What are your thoughts and experiences with haptic feedback, Taptic or otherwise? Let us know in the comments below!

LineageOS 15.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo has been officially announced

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to xda-developers

LineageOS 15.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo has been officially announced

Following the demise of CyanogenMod at the end of 2016, its successor, LineageOS, has seen a meteoric rise in popularity. The project grew to support over 180 devices reaching over 1.8 million users thanks to the help of 700+ contributors. Now, the team is ready to move on to its next big milestone: re-basing on Android 8.1 Oreo. After teasing us back in December, the team has today announced that LineageOS 15.1 is ready.

The most widely-installed Android custom ROM now offers all of the features that Android 8.0 and Android 8.1 Oreo bring to the table. That means notification channels and snoozing, picture-in-picture mode, support for the Autofill Framework, better background app and service limitations for improved memory performance/battery, smart text selection, and much, much more. Not to mention, there are also all of the features that LineageOS offers on top such as Privacy Guard, Live Display, and more which you can read about in our accompanying article.

LineageOS 15.1 Feature List Overview

With the introduction of LineageOS 15.1, the team also has another major announcement. They are officially introducing the Device Support Requirements Charter, a document which outlines all of the requirements that a build of LineageOS and its maintainer must meet in order for a build to be deemed “official.” This is a crucial step forward for the team as it clearly demonstrates the team’s commitment to quality. The document itself isn’t too long, but in general it ensures that an official build of LineageOS 15.1 supports all basic hardware as is possible as well as receives patches against all high profile security vulnerabilities.

Now, on to the actual devices that were announced to support LineageOS 15.1. Currently, the list isn’t that large in the first go-around, but given time more developers are likely to add to this list as they complete the device bring-up and meet the requirements laid out in the Device Support Requirements Charter. Specifically, we’re told that several devices are unable to receive LOS 15.1 due to a lack of support for a working HAL1 camera recorder, but they’re working on it. Also, though LOS 15.1 was announced today, the nightly builds won’t be ready until Monday when their build server starts making them.

List of Devices with Initial Official LineageOS 15.1 Support

Installation

Before you can install any of these builds (once they go live), you will need to unlock the bootloader of your device and also flash a custom recovery such as TWRP.

As usual, official LineageOS builds do not ship with superuser binaries pre-installed. Instead, you will need to also install one of the files listed here depending on your phone’s SoC architecture. Alternatively, you can install Magisk or SuperSU as well.

As for Google apps, they don’t come pre-installed on LineageOS 15.1 builds. Open Gapps currently doesn’t offer Android 8.1 Gapps (specifically, the SetupWizard APK is still 8.0), so the team recommends you grab them from MindTheGapps right here.

Finally, before you go flashing any of these builds, it is always recommended that you make a backup of your apps and data. The most recommended way is to use an app such as Titanium Backup or a free alternative like oandbackup. Both require root access to function.

Now, to actually install the build, that depends on what you currently have installed.

If you are running an OFFICIAL build of LineageOS 14.1, then you can follow these steps without wiping data.

  1. Download the update either from the links above or through the built-in updater app. If you download it from the updater app, you’ll need to use the “export” option in the menu to save the build to your internal storage.
  2. Download the Gapps package and one of the superuser packages linked above.
  3. Boot into recovery.
  4. Format system partition.
  5. Flash the LineageOS 15.1 build, and then the Gapps and superuser package.
  6. Reboot.

If you are NOT running an official build of LineageOS 14.1 (ie. anything else), then you follow the same set of above instructions except that you must wipe data before flashing.

Hands On + Features

Interested in checking out what LineageOS 15.1 has to offer before installation? Check out Miles’ hands-on video over on our YouTube channel! Also be sure to check out our accompanying article which goes over nearly all of the features that LOS 15.1 has to offer! It even has screenshots for everything and a video to walk you through it!

A Note on Unofficial Builds

Just because your device is not one of the ones listed above doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy LineageOS! Since the project is open source, that means any independent developer can build a custom ROM based off of its source code. However, the quality can wildly vary, so don’t be surprised if you flash an unofficial build and some things break. On the other hand, some unofficial builds are fairly close to being stable and are perfectly acceptable to flash onto your device.

There are many unofficial builds of LineageOS on our forums, and what works or doesn’t work is largely device-dependent. Please read over the original post in any forum thread before you proceed with flashing a custom ROM on your device—it’ll save you a lot of headache!

New Wallpapers

With a new release come a new set of wallpapers! These wallpapers are all sourced from Unsplash. You can take a look at the wallpapers below in case you’re interested in using them on a non-LineageOS build. You can also download them below. Take note that we’re providing the raw wallpapers that are not rotated, so they’re also perfect for your desktop monitor!

The differences between Android and iOS are rapidly evaporating

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Android Central

There is no blue team. It’s all a lie. Red and blue are the same.

Through years of feature cloning and one-upmanship, Android and iOS have slowly become the same thing. Every year we see Apple and Google take to the stage with broad messages, which sound like different overall missions, only to see individual features that closely resemble the other offering.

As I sit here with an iPhone X to my left and a Google Pixel 2 to my right, I can honestly pick up either and comfortably use it without feeling like any one major feature is missing from the experience I appreciate on the other. Through no manipulation of my own, aside from the apps I choose to install, the differences between these two experiences have all but faded away.

For my use, and I suspect for many others as well, there are no major functional differences between iOS and Android anymore.

How we got here

I’ve been an Android guy from day one — picked up an HTC G1 because it gave me a Linux terminal I could carry in my pocket. I was a server admin at the time, so being able to remote in from the tiny computer in my pocket held tremendous value. Also, having come from the LG enV line of phones, I appreciated the hardware keyboard. While I have bought and tried every iPhone that has ever been released, I never really enjoyed the experience. Android got its hooks in me first, but never deep enough for me to not try what was offered elsewhere.

Today, the iPhone X feels just as feature-complete and enjoyable to use as my other favorite phone, because both companies have made so many moves to copy features found on the other side.

These details only matter to nerds like me, and with each generation those differences fade.

A lot has changed for both iOS and Android since those early days. As each of these platforms matured, it became necessary to implement both hardware and software features others found compelling. Tech nerds look at little things like the ability to copy and paste or the decision to use larger displays as these major efforts to copy the competition, but the reality is the major things were already fairly similar. You pick up the phone, open an app, use the app, and put the phone back down.

As much as Apple likes to crow about security or Google about intelligence, the truth is the way most people use their phones has always depended a lot more on whether your phone had access to the things your friends have access to. So these minor things that made the apps easier to use or more convenient to share from became priorities to implement everywhere.

If you look deeply at these operating systems, you can see the small differences so many tech bloggers will claim are enormous which separate them. Android makes it easier to share information between apps, for example. If I click a YouTube link in one app, it always opens the YouTube app to play the video instead of opening YouTube in the browser. Meanwhile, Apple offers the kind of granular control over the information your apps take and deliver that I dream of on Android.

Neither of these things matter to someone like my sister, whose biggest concern is whether her phone has the latest fitness app update or a fun new camera app to play with her kids. These details only matter to nerds like me, and with each generation, those differences fade.

When the most important thing is apps, it becomes important to make sure your operating system offers the best version of an experience and then make sure it can’t be had elsewhere. For Apple, that app has always been iMessage.

Google has tried and failed to capture the magic of popular messaging apps more times than I care to count, while Apple fans consider receiving messages from someone not using an iPhone a mark of shame. Meanwhile, Google’s computational photography keeps the Pixel phones in the camera lead without actually offering a superior sensor. Apple and Google could easily share here, but these apps are now ammunition in the effort to encourage users to switch from one to the other.

Where we go from here

I’ve spent a lot of time over-simplifying the comparison between these two to make a point, but it’s important to highlight one major difference. In this effort to make apps a form of currency, Google faces challenges that Apple will never need to worry about.

Samsung controls the vast majority of Android’s market share, and regularly tries to make its own versions of Google’s software stand out from Google’s. The Pixel phones aren’t the most popular Android phones, but they set the standard for how Android should look and feel. Not only do the Galaxy phones not do everything the Pixel phones can do, but the experience is also muddied with bad copies of Google’s best features. Google lacks the absolute control of its platform Apple possesses, which is why a lot of changes come through its Play Services system instead of through full operating system updates. Google can’t update every part of a phone this way, but the parts this software can touch are easy to adjust and improve almost instantly.

Apple and Google are competing at an absurdly even footing for this to be possible.

There’s also a big problem with universality in the Apple ecosystem. If you use all Apple products, the experience can be quite good. Deviate from that, and things start to fall apart.

The only fitness tracker that talks to Apple’s excellent health ring and achievement system the right way is the Apple Watch. HomePod is only really useful if you use Apple Music. But it goes deeper than hardware, and that’s where things become truly problematic. Apple’s keyboard isn’t my favorite, but I can never truly disable it in favor of one I prefer. The Apple keyboard takes over whenever I’m entering a password in order to protect me, and then some apps will default to Apple’s keyboard instead of the one I have selected.

Another example is the browser. Safari is the default for everything and if you deviate from that your general experience across the OS suffers unnecessarily. Granted, in this case, Safari is generally the best performing browser on iOS, but it’s an unmistakably user-hostile move to tell users they can have whatever apps they want and then artificially limit the capabilities of those non-Apple products.

Many — possibly even a majority — of Apple users are happy with platform lock-in. Similarly, a great many Android users are happy with whatever is provided on the phone to start. This is why many U.S. carriers tried for so long to exercise greater control over the apps that came included on phones; the money to be made from app developers who coveted that space in front of our eyeballs was enormous. And it continues to happen in a lesser sense today because it works.

The apps included on a phone are more likely to be the one used, unless that person has friends or co-workers all using some other app. While we spend an increasing amount of time in apps, research suggests more than half of us don’t regularly go looking for new ones to install.

The bottom line here, at least for me, is how impressive it is for these two platforms to have grown to be nearly indistinguishable from a functionality perspective. The buttons may be in different places, and the number of taps and swipes I have to accomplish a task may be slightly higher or lower, but I can’t point to any one thing in my day-to-day I can’t do on one of these phones that I can do on the other. I have a little more control over how things look on Android, and I’m a fan of the way I can (sometimes) pick up my iPad and be right where I left off in an article on my iPhone, but there’s very little else about the experiences I can point at and say I absolutely must have to enjoy my phone and see it isn’t available on the other.

To me, this all spells fantastic news for the future of Android.

To me, that’s fantastic news for Android. Apple and Google are competing on an absurdly even footing for this to be possible. Comparing the quality of cameras is a matter of the most minute details. The performance of these high-end phones is nearly indistinguishable. All of my apps exist everywhere. As a tech blogger with access to all of this hardware, I’m in a uniquely privileged position to make this claim, but I can honestly switch from an iPhone X to a Pixel 2 and not really feel like I’m making a huge switch. The maturity of these platforms makes that possible, but it also makes the rush to make other things that keep users from switching a greater priority than polishing some rough edges in this next generation.

Hacker gets Windows 10 up and running on a Raspberry Pi 3 (sort of)

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Liliputing

The Raspberry Pi line of computers can run a wide range of software including a variety of GNU/Linux distributions and Google Android. But while Microsoft’s Windows 10 IoT Core can also run on a Raspberry Pi, there’s officially no way to run a full-fledged desktop version of Windows on the tiny, low-power computer.

Unofficially though…

Dutch developer Bas Timmer has posted a few images on Twitter showing Windows 10 running on a Raspberry Pi 3 computer with a Broadcom BCM2837 ARMv8 processor.

Up until recently it would have been nearly impossible to get Windows 10 up and running on a device with an ARM-based processor, but with Microsoft officially adding support for ARM chips in an upcoming release, it looks like Timmer managed to shoehorn a version of the OS onto the Raspberry Pi.

He notes that the operating system is currently only using one of the processor’s four CPU cores, which may be part of the reason the OS runs so slowly. And after using Windows 10 for a little while he got an”UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” error message.

In other words, you probably don’t want to use Windows 10 on a Raspberry Pi 3… at least not yet. But it’s certainly fascinating to see that it’s possible for the OS to run at all on a $35 computer.

It also supports x86 emulation, which means you can run Windows applications that aren’t natively compiled to run on devices ARM-based processors.

Why Linux is better than Windows or macOS for security

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Computerworld

Enterprises invest a lot of time, effort and money in keeping their systems secure. The most security-conscious might have a security operations center. They of course use firewalls and antivirus tools. They probably spend a lot of time monitoring their networks, looking for telltale anomalies that could indicate a breach. What with IDS, SIEM and NGFWs, they deploy a veritable alphabet of defenses.

But how many have given much thought to one of the cornerstones of their digital operations: the operating systems deployed on the workforce’s PCs? Was security even a factor when the desktop OS was selected?

This raises a question that every IT person should be able to answer: Which operating system is the most secure for general deployment?

We asked some experts what they think of the security of these three choices: Windows, the ever-more-complex platform that’s easily the most popular desktop system; macOS X, the FreeBSD Unix-based operating system that powers Apple Macintosh systems; and Linux, by which we mean all the various Linux distributions and related Unix-based systems.

How we got here

One reason enterprises might not have evaluated the security of the OS they deployed to the workforce is that they made the choice years ago. Go back far enough and all operating systems were reasonably safe, because the business of hacking into them and stealing data or installing malware was in its infancy. And once an OS choice is made, it’s hard to consider a change. Few IT organizations would want the headache of moving a globally dispersed workforce to an entirely new OS. Heck, they get enough pushback when they move users to a new version of their OS of choice.

Still, would it be wise to reconsider? Are the three leading desktop OSes different enough in their approach to security to make a change worthwhile?

Certainly the threats confronting enterprise systems have changed in the last few years. Attacks have become far more sophisticated. The lone teen hacker that once dominated the public imagination has been supplanted by well-organized networks of criminals and shadowy, government-funded organizations with vast computing resources.

Like many of you, I have firsthand experience of the threats that are out there: I have been infected by malware and viruses on numerous Windows computers, and I even had macro viruses that infected files on my Mac. More recently, a widespread automated hack circumvented the security on my website and infected it with malware. The effects of such malware were always initially subtle, something you wouldn’t even notice, until the malware ended up so deeply embedded in the system that performance started to suffer noticeably. One striking thing about the infestations was that I was never specifically targeted by the miscreants; nowadays, it’s as easy to attack 100,000 computers with a botnet as it is to attack a dozen.

Does the OS really matter?

The OS you deploy to your users does make a difference for your security stance, but it isn’t a sure safeguard. For one thing, a breach these days is more likely to come about because an attacker probed your users, not your systems. A survey of hackers who attended a recent DEFCON conference revealed that “84 percent use social engineering as part of their attack strategy.” Deploying a secure operating system is an important starting point, but without user education, strong firewalls and constant vigilance, even the most secure networks can be invaded. And of course there’s always the risk of user-downloaded software, extensions, utilities, plug-ins and other software that appears benign but becomes a path for malware to appear on the system.

And no matter which platform you choose, one of the best ways to keep your system secure is to ensure that you apply software updates promptly. Once a patch is in the wild, after all, the hackers can reverse engineer it and find a new exploit they can use in their next wave of attacks.

And don’t forget the basics. Don’t use root, and don’t grant guest access to even older servers on the network. Teach your users how to pick really good passwords and arm them with tools such as 1Password that make it easier for them to have different passwords on every account and website they use.

Because the bottom line is that every decision you make regarding your systems will affect your security, even the operating system your users do their work on.

Windows, the popular choice

If you’re a security manager, it is extremely likely that the questions raised by this article could be rephrased like so: Would we be more secure if we moved away from Microsoft Windows? To say that Windows dominates the enterprise market is to understate the case. NetMarketShare estimates that a staggering 88% of all computers on the internet are running a version of Windows.

If your systems fall within that 88%, you’re probably aware that Microsoft has continued to beef up security in the Windows system. Among its improvements have been rewriting and re-rewriting its operating system codebase, adding its own antivirus software system, improving firewalls and implementing a sandbox architecture, where programs can’t access the memory space of the OS or other applications.

But the popularity of Windows is a problem in itself. The security of an operating system can depend to a large degree on the size of its installed base. For malware authors, Windows provides a massive playing field. Concentrating on it gives them the most bang for their efforts.
As Troy Wilkinson, CEO of Axiom Cyber Solutions, explains, “Windows always comes in last in the security world for a number of reasons, mainly because of the adoption rate of consumers. With a large number of Windows-based personal computers on the market, hackers historically have targeted these systems the most.”

It’s certainly true that, from Melissa to WannaCry and beyond, much of the malware the world has seen has been aimed at Windows systems.

macOS X and security through obscurity

If the most popular OS is always going to be the biggest target, then can using a less popular option ensure security? That idea is a new take on the old — and entirely discredited — concept of “security through obscurity,” which held that keeping the inner workings of software proprietary and therefore secret was the best way to defend against attacks.

Wilkinson flatly states that macOS X “is more secure than Windows,” but he hastens to add that “macOS used to be considered a fully secure operating system with little chance of security flaws, but in recent years we have seen hackers crafting additional exploits against macOS.”

In other words, the attackers are branching out and not ignoring the Mac universe.

Security researcher Lee Muson of Comparitech says that “macOS is likely to be the pick of the bunch” when it comes to choosing a more secure OS, but he cautions that it is not impenetrable, as once thought. Its advantage is that “it still benefits from a touch of security through obscurity versus the still much larger target presented by Microsoft’s offering.”

Joe Moore of Wolf Solutions gives Apple a bit more credit, saying that “off the shelf, macOS X has a great track record when it comes to security, in part because it isn’t as widely targeted as Windows and in part because Apple does a pretty good job of staying on top of security issues.”

And the winner is …

You probably knew this from the beginning: The clear consensus among experts is that Linux is the most secure operating system. But while it’s the OS of choice for servers, enterprises deploying it on the desktop are few and far between.

And if you did decide that Linux was the way to go, you would still have to decide which distribution of the Linux system to choose, and things get a bit more complicated there. Users are going to want a UI that seems familiar, and you are going to want the most secure OS.

As Moore explains, “Linux has the potential to be the most secure, but requires the user be something of a power user.” So, not for everyone.

Linux distros that target security as a primary feature include Parrot Linux, a Debian-based distro that Moore says provides numerous security-related tools right out of the box.

Of course, an important differentiator is that Linux is open source. The fact that coders can read and comment upon each other’s work might seem like a security nightmare, but it actually turns out to be an important reason why Linux is so secure, says Igor Bidenko, CISO of Simplex Solutions. “Linux is the most secure OS, as its source is open. Anyone can review it and make sure there are no bugs or back doors.”

Wilkinson elaborates that “Linux and Unix-based operating systems have less exploitable security flaws known to the information security world. Linux code is reviewed by the tech community, which lends itself to security: By having that much oversight, there are fewer vulnerabilities, bugs and threats.”

That’s a subtle and perhaps counterintuitive explanation, but by having dozens — or sometimes hundreds — of people read through every line of code in the operating system, the code is actually more robust and the chance of flaws slipping into the wild is diminished. That had a lot to do with why PC World came right out and said Linux is more secure. As Katherine Noyes explains, “Microsoft may tout its large team of paid developers, but it’s unlikely that team can compare with a global base of Linux user-developers around the globe. Security can only benefit through all those extra eyeballs.”

Another factor cited by PC World is Linux’s better user privileges model: Windows users “are generally given administrator access by default, which means they pretty much have access to everything on the system,” according to Noyes’ article. Linux, in contrast, greatly restricts “root.”

Noyes also noted that the diversity possible within Linux environments is a better hedge against attacks than the typical Windows monoculture: There are simply a lot of different distributions of Linux available. And some of them are differentiated in ways that specifically address security concerns. Security Researcher Lee Muson of Comparitech offers this suggestion for a Linux distro: “The Qubes OS is as good a starting point with Linux as you can find right now, with an endorsement from Edward Snowden massively overshadowing its own extremely humble claims.” Other security experts point to specialized secure Linux distributions such as Tails Linux, designed to run securely and anonymously directly from a USB flash drive or similar external device.

Building security momentum

Inertia is a powerful force. Although there is clear consensus that Linux is the safest choice for the desktop, there has been no stampede to dump Windows and Mac machines in favor of it. Nonetheless, a small but significant increase in Linux adoption would probably result in safer computing for everyone, because in market share loss is one sure way to get Microsoft’s and Apple’s attention. In other words, if enough users switch to Linux on the desktop, Windows and Mac PCs are very likely to become more secure platforms.

Android Go: Everything you need to know

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Android Central – Android Forums, News, Reviews, Help and Android Wallpapers

Android Go will significantly lower the barrier to entry for smartphones in emerging markets.

For a few years now, Google has been saying that its next billion users will come from countries like India. With a projected 500 million users estimated to make their way online for the first time over the next five years, Google sees a lot of potential in catering to this market.

The company even has a Next Billion Users team that designs products and solutions for the Indian market. Helmed by Caesar Sengupta, the unit has rolled out payment services like Tez, a minimalist app that hooks into the government’s UPI interface for seamless bank transfers, a lightweight storage manager in Files Go, free public Wi-Fi at thousands of train stations across the country, and much more.

Its most ambitious bet is Android Go — a lightweight version of Android optimized for entry-level devices. Google has tried its hand at the budget segment previously with the Android One initiative, but Android Go is a reimagination of the budget segment entirely. During a visit to the country last year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that budget phones need to cost in the vicinity of $30 to be viable for the millions of Indians to consider making their first smartphone purchase. The Android Go platform is the realization of those efforts.

Android Go isn’t that different from the regular Android

Android Go uses the same foundation as the standard version of Android, but with several stability and performance tweaks thrown in to ensure it works on devices with underpowered hardware. The first version of Android Go is built on Android 8.1 Oreo, and the OS also has data management features integrated at a system-wide level, giving you the ability to closely monitor data usage.

And like all devices certified by Google, Android Go phones will come with Google Play Protect out of the box. The security suite leverages machine learning to look for malicious apps on your phone. It also constantly scans your app installs — even those that haven’t been downloaded from the Play Store — to ensure your device is secure.

The platform comes with its own suite of apps

As Android Go is designed primarily to run on phones with less than 1GB of RAM, Google has rolled out lightweight versions of its apps tailored for the platform.

Designed from the ground up, Google Go gives you the ability to query the web and find recommendations, delivering a similar experience as the full-fledged Google app for a fraction of the install size. That’s the same story with Google Assistant Go, which brings Assistant to devices with less than 1GB of RAM for the first time.

As for Gboard Go, the lightweight keyboard retains the same feature-set as the standard version — autocorrect, voice typing, multilingual language support, emojis and GIFs — but in a smaller package. The same holds true for Maps Go and Gmail Go as well. Chrome in Android Go will have Data Saver enabled by default.

Files Go is Google’s new storage manager, and it is fantastic. It does a great job of removing old files and cleaning the device cache, and it also comes with a feature that lets you easily send and receive files.

The lightweight apps combined with fewer pre-installed apps means you’ll get double the amount of storage on a phone with 8GB of internal storage when seen against the standard version of Android. The Play Store on Android Go devices will highlight lightweight apps that are designed to work best on the platform.

Qualcomm and MediaTek have pledged support

Both Qualcomm and MediaTek have announced support for the Android Go platform. Qualcomm has mentioned that low and mid-tier Snapdragon chipsets will be powering Android Go phones, and while we don’t have more to go on, but the fact that we’ll see Snapdragon branding indicates we’ll see some 2xx or even 4xx chipsets making their way to these phones.

As for MediaTek, the company has announced that the MT6739, MT6737, and MT6580 platforms will be used by upcoming Android Go phones. The MT6580 will be used by 3G-only devices, whereas the MT6739 and the MT6737 will power 4G-enabled handsets.

Coming later this quarter for under $50

With decent budget phones from the likes of Xiaomi available for under $100, Android Go devices need to cost significantly lower for them to be attractive to buyers in emerging markets. If early rumors are any indication, it looks like the first wave of devices will retail for around the $30 mark.

That’s for the Micromax Bharat Go, which is likely going to be the world’s first Android Go device. The device is slated to make its debut in India in the coming weeks and is estimated to be priced at ₹2,000 ($32), which gives us a baseline for what Android Go devices will generally cost. We don’t have a lot of details on the hardware powering the Bharat Go, but it’s said to feature 512MB or 1GB of RAM along with 8GB of internal storage. With an official unveil scheduled for the end of January, we don’t have to wait long to find out what’s in store.

With Android Go, Google is aiming to show that it’s possible to deliver a decent user experience on sub-$50 devices. By optimizing the software to run effectively on low-powered hardware and introducing lightweight versions of popular apps, Google is finally on track to provide a cost-effective solution for those looking to make the switch from feature phones.

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17074 for PC

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Windows Blog

Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17074 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring and for those who opted in to Skip Ahead. Please note that the same block for AMD processors as explained here is also in place for this flight.

What’s new in Build 17074

Reimagined Windows Internationalization

We have redesigned localization of Windows in this release. Now you can find your desired language (Local Experience Pack – or “Language Pack”) through the Microsoft Store and Region & Language section of the Settings app. The Settings app provides improved discoverability of features supported for each language.

We have also started utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neural network-based Machine Learning (ML) for Windows localization. Having the Local Experience Packs in the Microsoft Store allows us to take advantage of ML improvements and user feedback via Language Community App to release better translations more frequently. This will consistently improve the experience of our international customers with Windows.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

Hub improvements: We’ve revamped the Hub view in Microsoft Edge to show more content and to be easier and more intuitive to use. You’ll now find the different Hub sections listed with the full name visible in the Navigation view to the left of the content. This view can be collapsed to show icons only if you prefer to save space.

Screen capture showing the new Hub opened in Microsoft Edge, with the Navigation pane expanded to show Favorites, Reading List, Books, History, and Downloads.

Autofill cards on web forms: Microsoft Edge can now save and automatically fill your card information on payment web forms. On submission of a form with card information, Microsoft Edge will prompt you to save card information. In the future, you can simply select the preferred card from a drop-down menu to autofill necessary fields. Microsoft Edge securely saves your card information. CVV information is never saved. All cards linked to your Microsoft Account are also made available for automatically filling card information.

Screen recording showing the new autofill feature completing payment information during an online checkout.

New reading experience for EPUB, PDF, and Reading View: We’ve overhauled the look and feel of the reading and Books experiences in Microsoft Edge, bringing a new, consistent, more powerful experience across all your documents, whether they’re EPUB or PDF books, documents, or web pages in Reading View.

Screen recording showing the Reading View in Microsoft Edge toggling between Dark and Light modes.

In Books, we’ve added a new pop-over menu for “Notes,” making it a snap to navigate between annotations, notes, or highlights. We’ve also updated the Seek bar, so you can scrub through your document more easily, including Go-to-page (Ctrl-G) to find a specific page in the document. Go-to-page supports PDF Page Labels or EPUB Page List, so the page numbers can correspond to a print source that may be numbered differently.

Grammar Tools for EPUB books and Reading View: When viewing reflowable EPUB books or Reading View for websites, you can now use the new Grammar Tools button to enable new comprehension aids. Grammar Tools can break the words on the page into syllables, as well as highlight different parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Screen capture showing the an EPUB book in Microsoft Edge. The Grammar Tools pane is open with “Split words into syllables” and “Highlight all Verbs” turned to “On.” In the background a page from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland shows with words split into syllables and verbs highlighted in red.

New Full-screen reading experience: You can now take Books, PDFs, and Reading View pages full-screen, for a distraction-free reading experience.

Improved roaming for progress and notes across devices: For Store books, reading progress, notes, bookmarks, and annotations will roamed much faster across devices on the same account in near-real-time via WNS.

Screen capture showing the Notes and Table of Contents views open over a Book in Microsoft Edge.

General Improvements: We’ve made many improvements to fixed layout EPUB books, so content should be arranged more predictably on the page. Users of assistive technology will also find several improvements to viewing PDFs or Books with a screen reader, including more explicit narration when opening, loading, and navigating books.

Improved Library experience: We’ve built on the library improvements in Build 17035 with new changes in response to your feedback. Now, in addition to refreshing your library or pinning books to your Start menu, you can see recommendations for new books (when your library is empty) or filter expired rentals from the current library view. When you’re reading a book, we now show a Books icon and the title, rather than the URI, for a clearer and less cluttered presentation.

Audio Narrated Books: We’ve added support for EPUB Media Overlays, enabling support for a tailored narration experience, including custom audio and highlight styles. On supported books, you can now hear the book read aloud with custom narration, with the publisher’s chosen style applied to the highlight as the book is read. We’ve also made accessibility improvements when using Narrator to browse, search, or load a book.

Favorites bar improvements: The Favorites Bar will now automatically show on Start and New tab pages, if you have at least one favorite in it. When you navigate, the Favorites Bar will automatically hide to give you the most space for browsing. You may still choose to always show the favorites bar if you wish, via a context menu on the favorites bar “Show bar”, or via settings “Show the favorites bar”. The Favorites bar also now supports hiding names for individual favorite bar items, instead of having to either hide none or all names.

Option to never save passwords for domains: One of the top pieces of Windows Insider feedback was to provide an option to never save password for certain sites. When you choose to never save passwords, you shall never be prompted with a save password notification for that site.

Autofill passwords when InPrivate: Microsoft Edge now supports auto-filling of saved passwords when browsing InPrivate. To view list of available credentials for a site, click on the username field and it would populate all saved credentials for the website. No user credentials will be saved or updated when the windows is InPrivate.

Use Extensions when InPrivate: We’ve heard your feedback and have added the ability to load extensions when Microsoft Edge is in an InPrivate window. You can grant individual extensions permission to run in InPrivate from the options menu for the extension. We’re working with extension developers to enable more features when InPrivate.

Variable Fonts: Microsoft Edge now supports CSS extensions for OpenType Font Variations, which allows single “variable” font files to behave like multiple fonts, with a range of weight, width, or other attributes. You can see examples of variable fonts in practice at the Axis-Praxis Playground in Microsoft Edge.

Screen recording of a web page in Microsoft Edge, displaying an animation of a cartoon horse with a rider galloping.

Vertically dock the Microsoft Edge DevTools: The Microsoft Edge DevTools can now be docked vertically, fulfilling a a top web developer feature request. Click the new “Dock Right” button in the top-right corner of the tools to toggle the location. In a future update, we plan to improve the UI and flow of DevTools content when docked vertically.

Screen Capture showing the Microsoft Edge DevTools docked to the right of a web page.

Windows Shell Improvements

Quiet Hours: Are there certain times when you don’t want to be interrupted or just need to stay focused on what you’re doing? Be more productive with Quiet Hours. With this build you can automatically choose those times when you don’t want to be bothered with Quiet Hours automatic rules.

The new Quiet hours experience coming in RS4.

  • Quiet Hours will automatically turn on when you are duplicating your display. Never get interrupted during presentations again!
  • Quiet Hours will turn on automatically when you are playing a full screen exclusive DirectX game.
  • You can set the schedule that works for you so that Quiet Hours are always on when you want them. Go to Settings > Quiet Hours to configure your schedule.
  • Customize your own priority list so that your important people and apps always breakthrough when Quiet Hours are on. People pinned to your task bar with always break through!
  • See a summary of what you missed while you were in Quiet Hours.
  • If you’re using Cortana, you can also have Quiet Hours turn on while you’re at home.

Making your folders more discoverable: In response to your feedback, especially for those upgrading to Windows 10 for the first time, we’re making it easier to navigate to the things you care about by showing links to the Documents and Pictures folders in the Start menu by default. If you’d like to customize the folders that appear here, just right click an item and there’s now a link directly to the customization settings. We love the feedback!  Let us know if this helps and continue to tell us if there are ways we can make it easier for you to quickly get to the stuff you care about in Windows!

Start menu with context menu showing saying “personalize this list” that would appear after right-clicking the Photos folder icon on the left side of Start.

Near Share Improvements: Thanks everyone who’s shared feedback about Near Share – we’ve made some important reliability fixes to the feature with this build, so please give it a try once you upgrade.

For those who haven’t seen Near Share already, here’s a demo:

Note: Please update all of your Insider PCs to the latest flight to nearby share between them. PCs running older Insider Preview builds won’t be discoverable by those running the latest flight.

Windows Settings Improvements

Improved Storage Settings: If you head to Settings you’ll find that Disk Cleanup functionality has been rolled over into Storage Settings as part of our efforts to consolidate our settings experience.

Temporary files section in Settings – scanning for temp files, shows Thumbnails, Temporary files, Recycle Bin and more things that can be cleaned up.

Sound Settings Improvements: Continuing our work to make the new Sound Settings page a one stop shop for your audio needs, we’ve made some more design tweaks and have added some more helpful links. We’ve also added a brand new “App volume and device preferences” page to help you customize your audio experience to best fit your needs and preferences! Please explore these pages and share your feedback as we continuously work on improving them.

Sound settings landing page, showing these two new options under Other sound options.

About Settings Improvements: We’ve updated About Settings so you can now select and copy your device name. We’ve also added a link to System info and updated our search strings so that if you search for “computer name” you’ll now see a link that takes you to About Settings.

Manage app execution aliases from Settings: UWP apps can declare a name used to run the app from a command prompt – we’ve added a new page under Apps & Features Settings where you can turn these execution aliases on or off (particularly in the case where multiple apps use the same alias, and you want to choose which to give preference to).

Input Improvements

Introducing the Embedded Handwriting Panel: In this Insider release, users get to experience a new way to handwrite on Windows. Typically handwriting is done in a panel that’s separate from the text field and requires users to split their attention between the handwriting in the panel and the text in the text field. Our new handwriting experience brings handwriting input into the text control!

To invoke the experience, just tap your pen into a supported text field and it will expand to provide a comfortable area for you to write in. Your handwriting will get recognized and converted into text. If you run out of space, an additional line will be created below so you can continue writing. Once you’re done, simply tap outside the text field.

If something gets misrecognized or you’d like to edit what you’ve written, the same gestures that are available through the handwriting panel are also available, like the new insert gesture we added recently. Overall, we believe moving handwriting into the same location as the text will create a more comfortable, confident, and direct experience. Try it out and let us know what you think!

If you’d like to turn this experience off, there’s an option to do so in Pen & Windows Ink Settings, although if you do, please take a moment to log feedback about why you made this decision.

Note: This experience currently works in all XAML text fields except the Microsoft Edge address bar, Cortana, Mail, and the Calendar app. These teams are working on making the experience more tailored to their applications. This embedded experience will *only* appear if you’re using a pen to tap the text field – if you use touch, the existing handwriting panel will be invoked.

Handwriting Recognition Updates

Windows can now recognize Hindi handwriting: We’ve expanding our handwriting capabilities to new languages including Hindi, Welsh, Sesotho, Wolof and Maori!

To install one of these languages, go to Settings > Time & language > Region & Language and click “Add a language”. Select the language name and click Next. Make sure to select the “Handwriting” checkbox and select “Install.”. Reboot the machine for the changes to take effect.

Now switch to the input language of your choice – Hindi for example. Writing in that language will show handwriting recognition results in that language and convert it to text.  If you speak these languages, please give it a try and share feedback in the in the Feedback Hub, under Input and Language > Handwriting Recognition. As a reminder, if you’d like to use the handwriting panel with touch, you’ll need to enable it – it’s an option in Pen & Windows Ink Settings.

Writing Namaste in Hindi using the handwriting panel.

In addition to the handwriting panel, any app that uses the Ink Analysis APIs will now be able to recognize ink in these new languages without any additional changes!

XAML Improvements

We wanted to take a moment to walk through some of the changes you’ll see with apps using the next Insider SDK that is published. You’ll also see this across various elements in the system that use XAML.

Reveal in Light theme: Reveal will now show up by default with dark borders in light theme, but will continue to have a white hover Reveal:

Reveal in light theme now has dark borders.

Improved NavigationView:

  • We’ve stabilized and added animations for item headers, pane opening, and item selection events.
  • We’ve fixed several bugs with the Back Button in NavigationView.

Border Reveal in Lists: Based on feedback we’ve made the decision to removal Border Reveal in lists. It will be removed for ListView and TreeView. It will still be visible in NavigationView.

That means that ListView and TreeView will now only have the borders on hover, but no approach behavior will be applied to them.

Comparing approach and hover for dark and light theme as described in the above changes blurb.

CommandBar Margins: We’ve added a 2px margin between AppBarButtons by default when they are in a CommandBar. This also applies to the AppBarButtonRevealStyle. This can be seen below:

Showing the new wider CommandBar margins.

Important note about the Camera app

Some Insiders may have noticed changes in the Windows Camera app. You will get a more personalized behavior, like remembering the last camera and scene used. Handling two cameras simultaneously and more resolution options are available too. We also made some core architecture changes to the product to remove a lot of complex handling for unsupported devices and functionality that is now duplicated in core Windows operating system functionality. These changes will help us to innovate, fix bugs, and deliver new features. We think that this set of changes will long term yield a much higher quality Camera experience for all users!

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We have rolled out Sets to more Insiders – if you see it show up, please try it out and do the Quests in Feedback Hub!
  • This build includes mitigations to protect Insiders from the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. For more information on this topic, please see this blog post from Terry Myerson. Additionally, if you are running 3rd party antivirus software on your PC you will need to ensure you are running the latest most up-to-date version of your antivirus software with the latest antivirus definitions to avoid having your PC get into a bad state.
  • Windows now fully supports Adobe-style “.otf” OpenType Variable Fonts, like the Acumin Variable Concept font and others recently released by Adobe.
  • Insiders running Windows 10 S may have noticed that after upgrading to the latest builds, their PC appears to be running “Windows 10 Pro In S Mode”. This change is by design and these PCs will continue to function as Windows 10 S PCs and will continue to be able to take Insider Preview builds as part of testing RS4. We’ll have more to share as we get closer to the next Windows 10 release.
  • For Insiders who reported that Windows needs activation after upgrading to Build 17063, this build includes the fix that caused the issue however you will need to use the Activation Troubleshooter to get your activation back into a good state once you’re on this build.
  • We have added a new PowerShell cmdlet to retrieve decoded logs for Delivery Optimization (Get-DeliveryOptimizationLog).
  • We’ve updated the reveal effect in the Taskbar’s Clock and Calendar flyout such that the day with focus now has a lighter background.
  • Now that it’s had some time to receive your feedback, we’ve updated to be the default keyboard for the Tamil language.
  • We fixed an issue where Settings might crash if the window was too small.
  • We fixed an issue where Windows Update Settings unexpectedly displayed two horizontal lines.
  • We fixed an issue where in certain cases USB devices with unreliable connections might cause bugchecks (GSOD) on PCs.
  • We fixed an issue from the previous flight where touch and pen weren’t working on the non-primary display. This might also have resulted in mouse, touch, and pen input not happening in the right place after an orientation change or when using a non-native aspect ratio.
  • We fixed an issue where if you were using any EUDC fonts Microsoft Edge, Cortana, and other apps that use a webview wouldn’t launch.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge crashing when deleting favorites.
  • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge might crash when trying to copy text or login on certain websites.
  • We fixed an issue where Microsoft Edge might crash when opening PDFs on the previous flight.
  • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge resulting in images on flickr.com going blank after a follow/unfollow user action.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in a white line being visible on the right side of screen when certain videos are watched full screen in Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue where while navigating through OOBE, some of the buttons in the pages might not display correctly.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Themes appearing in Start after they’d been downloaded from Store.
  • We’ve updated the reveal effect in the Taskbar’s Clock and Calendar flyout such that the day with focus now has a lighter background.
  • We fixed an issue where the feedback message (like from Windows Hello) could end up overlapping Spotlight text on the lock screen.
  • We fixed an issue where Windows Update Settings unexpectedly displayed two horizontal lines.
  • We fixed an issue where when transparency effects were turned off the Virtual Desktops pane in Task View would overlap Timeline with no background.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in an explorer.exe crash when using WIN + Tab to open Task View on the previous flight.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in an explorer.exe crash when trying to use control.exe to open app defaults.
  • We fixed an issue where the Taskbar might render completely transparent on secondary monitors.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain apps, like Firefox, might not have audio after upgrading to the previous flight. This issue also impacted the ability to record audio in Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue where surround sound gaming headsets would revert to stereo after rebooting.
  • We fixed an issue in the audio service around app impersonation which was breaking audio recording from apps like Firefox which intentionally run with a restricted token.
  • We fixed a couple of issues resulting in crashes in the “audiosrv” and “audioendpointbuilder” audio services which would cause audio not to work, or new audio devices not to be recognized.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Hearthstone not launching on the previous build.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in fullscreen games getting stuck minimized or exiting fullscreen status unexpectedly.
  • We fixed an issue where the emoji panel search wasn’t working in desktop (Win32) apps.
  • We fixed an issue where the input flyout wouldn’t appear the first time you pressed WIN + Space.
  • We fixed a memory leak in NisSrv.exe from the previous flight.
  • We fixed an issue where MsMpEng.exe might unexpectedly use a high number of disk I/Os per second for a long time.
  • We fixed an issue where WerFault.exe might spike to 50%+ CPU for an unexpectedly long time.
  • We fixed an issue from the previous flight where touch and pen weren’t working on the non-primary display. This might also have resulted in mouse, touch, and pen input not happening in the right place after an orientation change or when using a non-native aspect ratio.
  • We fixed an issue when using the Arabic touch keyboard where pressing Ctrl wouldn’t show the directional markers on the Shift keys.
  • We fixed an issue where the emoji panel search wasn’t working in desktop (Win32) apps.
  • We fixed an issue where the input flyout wouldn’t appear the first time you pressed WIN + Space.
  • We fixed an issue where the OneNote app wasn’t being included in Cortana’s ”Pick up where I left off” notifications.
  • We fixed an issue on certain PCs where using the fingerprint scanner wouldn’t wake the PC up from Connected Standby.
  • We fixed an issue where you might show as connected to the network, but you wouldn’t actually be connected to use the Internet.
  • We fixed an issue where in certain cases USB devices with unreliable connections might cause bugchecks (GSOD) on PCs.
  • We fixed two issues that could result in some PCs bugchecking (GSOD) when entering into Connected Standby. If you had a laptop that encountered this, the experience would have been that you’d open your laptop and unexpectedly be logging into a new session, rather than continuing the one open before closing the lid.
  • We fixed an issue where some Bluetooth devices weren’t working and Device Manager showing error 43 for those drivers.

Known issues

  • When users try to create a Microsoft Edge InPrivate window from inside a Mixed Reality headset, a regular window will get created instead. Users won’t be able to use InPrivate inside Mixed Reality in this build. InPrivate on desktop is not affected.
  • We’re preparing for the inclusion of OpenSSH Server as a deployment mechanism in Developer Mode. However the UI code got checked in ahead of the components, and so while there is a “Use OpenSSH (Beta) for remote deployment” switch in the UI under Settings, it won’t work, and turning it on will break remote deployment to that device until the switch is turned off.
  • When you open Task View immediately after an upgrade, Timeline may not be visible. If you encounter this, wait 15-30 minutes and try launching Task View again.
  • The Windows Defender icon is missing from the systray, even if it shows as enabled in Settings.
  • Certain devices may hang on the boot screen after upgrading. If this happens to you, go into the BIOS and disable virtualization.
  • Apps that come preinstalled with Windows may fail to update in the Store with error 0x80073CF9.
  • Audio playback from Microsoft Edge is sometimes unexpectedly muted. A workaround is to minimize Edge, count to three, and then unminimize.
  • Upgrading to 17063 or later builds sometimes causes Settings / Privacy / Microphone, Camera, etc. to flip to “disabled”, which breaks camera and microphone access. A workaround is to manually turn them back on.

Developer Notes

  • Deploying an x86 app to a x64 PC remotely result in “FileNotFound” deployment failures if the target PC is running Build 17040 or higher. Deploying an x64 app to a x64 PC remotely or a x86 app to a x86 PC will work fine.
  • This build has an issue running Linux containers with Docker Community Edition for Windows (edge) on many PCs. The docker pull or docker run commands will fail with an error “Not enough memory resources are available to complete this operation”. We’re working on a fix for an upcoming Windows Insider build but you can work around the problem now with these steps:
  1. Be sure “Docker for Windows” is running, then right-click the whale icon in the notification area and choose “settings”.
  2. On the General tab, uncheck “Enable Linux containers on Windows”.
  3. Next a dialog “Switch to Standard mode (Linux VM / Windows daemon” will pop up. Click OK.
  4. Wait for the whale icon to turn white.

The latest Nintendo Switch hack paves the way for homebrew software

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to KitGuru

Back in March following on from the Switch’s launch, hackers immediately found a browser exploit that allowed them to dig deeper into the console’s inner workings. Now, right at the start of the year, hackers have managed to figure out how to get access to the Switch’s kernel, paving the way for future homebrew software.

As with most consoles, the Nintendo Switch is heavily locked down so that only approved software can run on the system. However, at the recent 34C3 hacking conference in Germany, three hackers known as Plutoo, Derrek, and Naehrwert demonstrated how they managed to access the console’s kernel via the Nvidia Tegra X1 chip. The hackers were helped by the sheer amount of documentation available on the Tegra X1, which shows hardware tinkerers how to bypass the System Memory Management Unit.

Nintendo-Switch-Shot-02-e1484299745390.jpg

As wololo reports, the hackers won’t be releasing their kernel exploits, which require that the Switch be running firmware version 3.0.0. Earlier firmware versions require a copy of Pokken Tournament DX to get it working.

While the kernel exploit won’t be going public, the three have said that they are planning on releasing a homebrew kit. This will allow unapproved third-party developers to get their own software running on the Switch.

KitGuru Says: Currently, Nintendo is on Switch firmware version 4.1.0, so whatever exploit is at play here has likely already been patched. Still, this is just the beginning, over time new exploits will be found and the cycle will continue. The main thing Nintendo will want to avoid  is the development of piracy tools, like the R4 back in the DS days, or the Gateway cards that released for the 3DS.

Announcing Google Play’s “Best of 2017”

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Official Google Blog

To close out another great year for Google Play, we’re sharing the best and most popular apps, games, music, movies, TV shows and books in 2017.

No one knows how far she can go better than “Moana,” as she landed the most popular movie of the year on Google Play. Strong female characters dominated this year’s movies chart with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Wonder Woman” rounding out the top three. “Game of Thrones” kept “Rick and Morty” and “The Walking Dead” at bay to claim the Iron Throne for the second year in a row as the most popular TV show. Elsewhere, Kendrick Lamar may no longer be so “HUMBLE.” after beating out Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” as Google Play’s most streamed song of 2017. Kendrick’s “DNA” also holds the number three spot on this list.

Nintendo’s “Super Mario Run” was the most downloaded new game of the year, but not all bubbles were burst, as “Bubble Witch 3 Saga” was closely behind at number two. “Photo Editor – Beauty Camera & Photo Filters” was the most downloaded new app with fans touching up their favorite photos for social media. We also have curated lists this year from our editors to help you find the best apps and games of 2017, such as “Socratic – Math Answers & Homework Help” and “CATS: Crash Area Turbo Stars,” respectively.

Check out Google Play’s top five lists below for this year’s most popular content in the U.S. You can also discover the most popular lists around the world and all our editors’ choices on the Best of 2017 section of the Play Store.

Tesla updates Model 3 software with radio, odometer, and more

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Electrek

When Tesla started delivering the Model 3 in July, it still hadn’t completed the software and user interface of its new electric vehicle.

The automaker has been updating the Model 3’s software since the launch and their latest update this week now brings some new (though quite basic) features.

One of the main missing features that had people puzzled was the FM radio.

A standard feature in virtually any car for decades now, some were surprised that Tesla, which makes some of the most advanced vehicles out there, didn’t include in the Model 3.

Of course, it was just an example of the incomplete software.

We have now received reports that Tesla included the feature in its latest Model 3 software update this week.

Yes, Model 3 now has the radio.

Other features recently added also include odometer, tire pressure, and energy consumption applications. All those apps have long been in the Model S and Model X, but Tesla is now adding them to Model 3.

Tesla is also adding features to the Model 3 that have been more recently introduced, like the easy entry and exit system attached to the driver’s profile.

The automaker described the feature when introducing it to Model S and Model X last month:

“Starting in this release, you can get in and out of the driver’s seat more easily. When you park, the steering wheel and driver’s seat will automatically adjust for an easier exit. After you return to the vehicle, they automatically adjust back to the recent driving profile when you step on the brake. Or, if your keyfob is linked to your driver profile, the seat and steering wheel adjust accordingly. As always, you can restore your profile by selecting it from the list.”

We are told that the Model 3’s UI is still not complete, but there has been a lot of progress since the launch and the system is now more mature – just in time for the expected start of regular customer deliveries in the next few weeks.

Electrek’s Take

While it might not seem like much, adapting all the different software applications to the different screens is actually a great task.

Going from a vertical to a horizontal screen is one thing, but the Model 3 also features a new computer platform different from the Model S and Model X.

Tesla had to adapt its code to the new computer’s Intel chips instead of Nvidia.

I find it fascinating that Tesla releases a new vehicle like that with the software clearly in beta. I suppose it plays right into their plan to first release the vehicle to employees in order to work out the early issues. I suppose we are going to have a better idea of how well it played out after their first few regular customer deliveries.

Kodi users are being tricked into installing piracy monitoring software

The online database of problematic add-ons has been criticised for bundling a couple of repositories whose developers argue aren’t problematic in any way.

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to TechRadar – All the latest technology news

1.png

Users of third-party Kodi skins have discovered that these optional extras have been partnered with monitoring software that checks whether the user’s other add-ons are legitimate, effectively making them a form of spyware.

The monitoring is being enabled by an add-on called KN Addon Caretaker, which checks a user’s installed add-ons against an online database to ensure everything installed is legitimate.

Recently, this software has been bundled with the skins Estuary MOD V2 and Embuary, meaning users have to install this monitoring software if they want to use the skins in question.

Civil War

The reason for this bundling is that the developers of these skins have grown tired of their work being used alongside piracy-enabling add-ons.

Kodi itself does not enable piracy, but through the use of these third-party add-ons, users can get access to pay TV streams without needing a subscription. This has lead to the software getting a reputation as being solely for piracy, which the Kodi team has been keen to distance themselves from.

Google’s Machine Learning Software Has Learned to Replicate Itself

These results are meaningful because even at Google, few people have the requisite expertise to build next generation AI systems. It takes a rarified skill set to automate this area, but once it is achieved, it will change the industry.

Your daily selection of the latest science news!

According to ScienceAlert

Back in May, Google revealed its AutoML project; artificial intelligence (AI) designed to help them create other AIs.

Now, Google has announced that AutoML has beaten the human AI engineers at their own game by building machine-learning software that’s more efficient and powerful than the best human-designed systems.

An AutoML system recently broke a record for categorising images by their content, scoring 82 percent.

While that’s a relatively simple task, AutoML also beat the human-built system at a more complex task integral to autonomous robots and augmented reality: marking the location of multiple objects in an image.

For that task, AutoML scored 43 percent versus the human-built system’s 39 percent.

Israeli Spies Spied Russian Spies Spying on American Spy Plans via Kaspersky Software

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to New on MIT Technology Review

No, it actually isn’t the plot of a movie. It’s a chain of events described in a New York Times article claiming that Israeli intelligence agents caught Russian spies using compromised Kaspersky Lab software to search millions of American computers for U.S. intelligence data.

The report explains that an Israeli team had actually hacked into Kaspersky’s systems, and then found that software vulnerabilities were being used by Russian hackers to scour computers for references to American intelligence programs. That was made possible by a flaw that enabled them to see file names of documents that were being scanned by the antivirus system.

The Times says that the Israeli intelligence team provided details of the observations to American officials, and that ultimately led the Department of Homeland Security to ban the Russian software from U.S. government use over security concerns.

The story lends weight to a report from last week that claimed the National Security Agency lost cyberdefense details to Russian hackers after a contractor left documents on a home computer protected by Kaspersky software. What remains to be seen now is just how many other systems may have been tapped in the same way.

The Google Drive app for PC and Mac is being shut down in March

Google has rolled out Drive File Streamer, which saves space on your local drive while providing access to “all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer.

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to The Verge

1.jpg

The aging Google Drive app for desktop is officially deprecated as of today, Google announced in a blog post. Support will be cut off on December 11th and the app will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. Users who are still running the Drive app will start seeing notifications in October that it’s “going away,” and the company will steer customers towards one of two replacements depending on whether they’re a consumer or business user. Google Drive the service isn’t going anywhere. You can still access it from the web, smartphone apps, and either of the software options mentioned below.

Google now has two fairly new software tools for backing up your data and/or accessing files in the cloud. There’s Backup and Sync, the all-encompassing consumer app that replaces both the standalone Google Drive and Google Photos Uploader apps. It offers essentially the same functionality as Drive and works much the same way.

Google plans to purge millions of apps from the Play Store next month

Spring cleaning is starting a few weeks early for Google this year.

According to The Next Web, the company began sending out emails to developers of apps that violate the Google Play Store’s User Data policy this week, warning them that their apps would be penalized or removed from the store altogether if the issues aren’t resolved promptly.

“Google Play requires developers to provide a valid privacy policy when the app requests or handles sensitive user or device information,” Google’s email explains. “Your app requests sensitive permissions (e.g. camera, microphone, accounts, contacts, or phone) or user data, but does not include a valid privacy policy.”

If they don’t want their app to lose visibility or be taken down from the Play Store, they either have to include a link to a valid privacy policy on the Play Store listing and within the app or remove any requests for sensitive information or user data. Any developers that haven’t taken action by March 15th, 2017 (or simply aren’t able to) will have to live with whatever Google decides to do with their apps.

With millions of apps crowding the Play Store, many of which have either never taken off or were abandoned years ago, this seems like a clever way to clear out the chaff and make the catalog a little less nightmarish to navigate. Providing countless developers don’t alter the permissions of their apps or throw together an acceptable privacy policy before March 15th, millions of apps could be purged.

AI software is figuring out how to best humans at designing new AI software

brain.jpg

Who programs the programmers? Soon enough, it might not be people behind the development of advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence tech, but other AI. MIT looks at the most recent work done by a range of different organizations, including Google Brain, who are working on AI that can develop machine learning software – and finds that in many cases, the results that come from machines coding other machines match or even exceed equivalent work done by humans.

Does that mean even machine learning programmers are facing employment extinction? Not exactly, and not yet – efforts to create machine learning programs that best their human-designed equivalent require a lot of computing firepower thrown at the problem; Google Brain’s person-besting experiment in building image recognition systems via AI development used 800 ugh-powered graphics processors working together, which is a costly endeavor to be sure.

But the advantages are clear, and there’s a path towards lessening the resource burden in creating these systems, too. Offloading machine learning development to machines would help address the serious shortfall in human expertise in the area, for instance, which is currently leading to a land grab for startups and academic talent with any kind of AI chops. It could also free up human researchers to work on more important problems, rather than spending their time on more rote or mundane training of AI systems using massive data sets.

AI tuning AI has another potential benefit – improving the learning curve for AI systems so that the volume of data required to produce meaningful results is also cut down. This would help greatly with endeavours like self-driving automobile systems, for which even millions of miles driven is little more than a good start in terms of delivering real-world usable results.

MIT Media Lab is open-sourcing its own efforts to create learning software from other machine learning programs, and this should help with industry-wide efforts to make this a practical way to create new software.

AI industry experts are quick to point out that developing machine learning requires an immense human effort at the outset, but offloading some of that work to other machine learning systems could drastically reduce the human input required at the beginning of the process and throughout. That’ll mean much-improved go-to-market times or products that require AI, including self-driving cars – but it definitely won’t help alleviate concerns that machine systems will replace an increasing number of human jobs in a growing number of fields.

Japanese white collar workers are already being replaced by artificial intelligence

AI.jpg

Most of the attention around automation focuses on how factory robots and self-driving cars may fundamentally change our workforce, potentially eliminating millions of jobs. But AI that can handle knowledge-based, white-collar work are also becoming increasingly competent.

One Japanese insurance company, Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance, is reportedly replacing 34 human insurance claim workers with “IBM Watson Explorer,” starting by January 2017.

The AI will scan hospital records and other documents to determine insurance payouts, according to a company press release, factoring injuries, patient medical histories, and procedures administered. Automation of these research and data gathering tasks will help the remaining human workers process the final payout faster, the release says.

Fukoku Mutual will spend $1.7 million (200 million yen) to install the AI system, and $128,000 per year for maintenance, according to Japan’s The Mainichi. The company saves roughly $1.1 million per year on employee salaries by using the IBM software, meaning it hopes to see a return on the investment in less than two years.

Watson AI is expected to improve productivity by 30%, Fukoku Mutual says. The company was encouraged by its use of similar IBM technology to analyze customer’s voices during complaints. The software typically takes the customer’s words, converts them to text, and analyzes whether those words are positive or negative. Similar sentiment analysis software is also being used by a range of US companies for customer service; incidentally, a large benefit of the software is understanding when customers get frustrated with automated systems.

The Mainichi reports that three other Japanese insurance companies are testing or implementing AI systems to automate work such as finding ideal plans for customers. An Israeli insurance startup, Lemonade, has raised $60 million on the idea of “replacing brokers and paperwork with bots and machine learning,” says CEO Daniel Schreiber.

Artificial intelligence systems like IBM’s are poised to upend knowledge-based professions, like insurance and financial services, according to the Harvard Business Review, due to the fact that many jobs can be “composed of work that can be codified into standard steps and of decisions based on cleanly formatted data.” But whether that means augmenting workers’ ability to be productive, or replacing them entirely remains to be seen.

“Almost all jobs have major elements that—for the foreseeable future—won’t be possible for computers to handle,” HBR writes. “And yet, we have to admit that there are some knowledge-work jobs that will simply succumb to the rise of the robots.”

New software makes CRISPR-methodology easier

According to: phys.org

New software makes CRISPR-methodology easier

Credit: Karolinska Institutet

Scientists at Karolinska Institutet and the University of Gothenburg have generated a web-based software, Green Listed, which can facilitate the use of the CRISPR methodology. The software is published in the journal Bioinformatics and is freely available through greenlisted.cmm.ki.se where also information texts and films are available.

Cells are very small and builds up an organism. A human has about 100 times as many in its body as there are people on earth. Inside a vast majority of these cells are long chains of DNA. These DNA chains affects how different cells look and behave. CRISPR is a research method that can be used to rapidly study how different portions of the DNA directly affect cells. Using this method, researchers can gain insights to the cause of diseases and give suggestions for how they can be treated.

“We use the CRISPR methodology to study both and . The goal is to develop new treatments for patients with diseases related to the immune system, such as arthritis, as well as cancer”, says Fredrik Wermeling at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet.

Green Listed simplifies work with the CRISPR-methodology

The CRISPR method is based on a system that is found naturally in many bacteria and the method has received a lot of attention in the last few years. A very powerful way to use CRISPR is to in parallel study different parts of the DNA simultaneously, a so called CRISPR screen. “Green Listed” is specifically used to facilitate this type of large-scale studies.

“By implementing the CRISPR methodology in our research, we can now explain phenomena’s we have tried to understand for several years. This is primarily related to CRISPR screen experiments, where we in parallel modify a large number of selected parts of the DNA of isolated cells. The Green Listed software simplifies this process considerably and has been very important for our progress”, Fredrik Wermeling says.

DNA is like a cookbook

DNA is an abstract concept researchers often use. Fredrik suggests that a way to think about DNA is that it is similar to a cookbook which cells carry around inside of them.

“The reason for that the cells that make up an individual are different, is that they use different recipes of the cookbook in different ways. Many diseases can to a certain degree be explained by the existence of changes in the DNA of the affected patient. In line with the cookbook metaphor, this could be seen as that one or more recipes in the cookbook have been changed. It is easy to imagine that the end product is radically different if you change a recipe of a cookbook, for example a change from a tablespoon of sugar to a tablespoon of salt. With the CRISPR method, we can quickly make such changes in individual isolated cells and thereby learn about the diseases we study”, Fredrik concludes.

The project was financially supported by the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Wenner-Gren Foundations, the Jeanssons Foundations, BILS (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure for Life Sciences), and the Karolinska Institutet.

Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation, 15 years after Ballmer called it ‘cancer’

1.jpeg

Former Microsoft CEO might have labeled Linux “a cancer” 15 years ago, but things couldn’t be any different this week. Microsoft, the software giant that has built its empire on closed-source proprietary software, is joining the Linux Foundation. 10 years ago that would have seemed unimaginable, but Microsoft has been steadily embracing open source recently, leading it to become the top organization with the most open source contributors on Github.

As Ars Technica notes, Microsoft has been contributing to Linux for several years now, and Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, welcomes the company joining the foundation. “Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people.”

MICROSOFT HAS BEEN STEADILY EMBRACING OPEN SOURCE RECENTLY

Microsoft has truly embraced Satya Nadella’s culture change at the company, and the software maker has open sourced PowerShellVisual Studio Code, and Microsoft Edge’s JavaScript engine recently. Microsoft also partnered with Canonical to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10, and acquired Xamarin to aid mobile app development. Microsoft even open sourced Xamarin’s SDKs and developer tools, and brought SQL Server to Linux.

Alongside Microsoft’s Linux Foundation membership, Google is also making its own surprising news. Google is joining the .NET Foundation, which oversees .NET Platform programming languages that form part of Microsoft’s major competitor to Java and Android. While Google hasn’t shown much interest in supporting .NET or providing apps for Microsoft’s new UWP platform, it’s planning to support .NET in the Google Cloud Platform.

Microsoft’s open source news arrives alongside a Visual Studio for Mac release. Microsoft accidentally revealed the software earlier this week, and it’s built on top of Xamarin Studio that the company acquired earlier this year. Windows and Mac developers will be able to share and contribute to the same projects with the new software.

Central to this is Paint 3D, a new version of the classic MS Paint app that lets you build virtual models by cutting and pasting 2D images from photographs, doodling 2D images with the Surface Pen, or even 3D-scanning a real life object with your smartphone’s camera. Paint 3D is a software studio where you can make your own life-like images.

3D Printing

If you’ve made something cool in Minecraft, you’ll be able to send it to a 3D printer. It’s the one Microsoft property that’s seemingly made for this.

3D in Office Apps

Wednesday’s 3D demo also included a 3D tree being dropped into a PowerPoint presentation. The tree spun and zoomed around as the presentation moved from slide to slide. Microsoft says support for 3D images and animations will be added to all of the big apps in Office. It’s a big 3D graphics push.

VR Headsets

Microsoft still loves Hololens (there was a demo!) but with all of this 3D content pumping through Windows 10, its AR headset is about to get company. Hardware partners like Lenovo, Asus, Acer, HP, and Dell will be making VR headsets for both VR games and 3D experiences in Windows. Pricing starts at $300. These VR headsets appear to have positional tracking, a key differentiator that makes them more capable than smartphone-powered headsets like Gear VR and Daydream.

The built-in 4K Blu-ray player in the Xbox One S will soon support Dolby Atmos. If you have an Atmos-ready soundbar or surround system, movie night is going to take a big audio leap forward with Windows 10.

Easier Sharing

Back to desktop OS updates. Whenever you want to share a photo or a piece of content in Windows 10, you’ll be able to instantly send it to all of the most important people in your contacts—that group of friends and coworkers that appears in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Shoulder Taps

One feature that seems like a throw-away but that we guarantee you’ll soon see all the time is Shoulder Taps. With Windows 10 Creators Update, you’ll be able to send fun little emoji to your contacts. They’re basically 3D stickers like you’d find in a messaging app. The recipient sees the little graphic pop up at the bottom of the screen, springing to life just above the contact avatar of the person who sent it. Lord help us.

It’s Free

The Creators Update will be available for free on all of the roughly 400 million Windows 10 devices already out there. Microsoft says the update will come in the spring, but wasn’t more specific than that. It’s nice to see that no-cost updates for operating systems are still a thing—as they should be.

Translation Tool Showdown: Google Translate vs. Microsoft Translator

Whether you’re a globetrotter, language student, or business owner, tools like Google Translate and Microsoft Translator make it easier for everyone in the world to understand one another. But while both can translate text, speech, and images, they still each have their own quirks. So all aboard the showdown train! Next stop: translation station.

The Contenders

Before we dive in too deep and start comparing features, let’s take a quick glance at our tussling translation titans:

  • Google Translate: A free translation tool from Google that can be used viabrowser, mobile browser, Android app, or iOS app. Both the browser and mobile browser versions can translate text and web pages, and the non-mobile browser can also translate some documents. The Android and iOS app can translate text, real-time speech, images, web pages, and even real-time video for some languages. There is also an API developers can use to build their own translation tools.
  • Microsoft Translator: A free translation tool from Microsoft that can be used in your browser or mobile browser (via Bing Translator), and has apps for Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, and apps for Apple Watch andAndroid Wear. Additionally, Microsoft Translator can be integrated with other Microsoft applications, like Microsoft Office, Skype, and Visual Studiousing the Microsoft Translator API (not free for business applications). The browser versions can translate only text and web pages, but the Microsoft Translator apps can work with text, real-time speech, and images.

Google Translate has long been the favorite when it comes to translation tools, but thanks to some major updates, Microsoft Translator (also known as Bing Translate) has been catching up in the last couple years. Now they’re both fairly comparable when it comes to functionality.

Google Has Almost Double the Languages, But They Don’t All Get Full Support

A translation tool shouldn’t only be measured by the number of languages it can translate, but it’s certainly a major component. The more languages the better. Google Translate’s 103 languages trumps Microsoft Translator’s support for 54 languages. But before we tally a point for Google Translate, it’s important to note that not every language in their catalogue has the same level of support.

Google Translate can handle 103 languages, but not every language works with every feature. For example, French can be translated using all six of Translate’s features: type, write, talk, snap, see, and offline (more on these later). Arabic works with everything but snap photos. And the Hausa language, which is mainly spoken in Nigeria, can only be translated via text. So it’s cool that Google Translate has such a wide range, but once you get outside of the more widely-spoken languages, the tool essentially becomes a vocabulary dictionary.

When it comes to Microsoft Translator’s 54 languages, it’s a similar story but on a much smaller scale. You can only use real-time speech translation for Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish for example. But 44 of Microsoft Translator’s 54 languages can be used offline, whereas Google Translate only supports about half of theirs for offline use. Google has more languages total, and has a few more available for offline use, but they’re both in the same ballpark when it comes to giving full translation support to the same popular languages.

Google Lets You Translate Real-Time Video, Microsoft Makes Conversations Easier

As mentioned previously, Google Translate has six main features:

  1. Type: You type in some text in your browser or on your phone.
  2. Write: You scribble a word or phrase on your touchscreen with your finger.
  3. Talk: You talk into your phone’s microphone and it translates what you say in real-time.
  4. Snap: You take a photo of text and it translates it.
  5. See: You point your phone’s camera at some text and it translates it in real-time.
  6. Offline: You are able to use the above features without an internet connection.

Google Translate’s real-time video translation feature is what makes it really stand out from Microsoft’s offering. It works a lot like the app Word Lens, where it actually changes the text you’re seeing right before your eyes. It can make reading signs and navigating an unfamiliar area quick and easy.

Microsoft Translator has five main features:

  1. Text: You type some text in your browser or on your phone.
  2. Speech: You talk into your phone’s microphone and it translates what you say in real-time.
  3. Photo: You take a photo of text and it translates it.
  4. Conversation Mode: You and another person speak into your phone’s microphone and it gets translated in real-time.
  5. Offline: You are able to use the above features without an internet connection.

Translator’s real-time conversation mode is where it truly shines. The screen splits into two halves, and you choose a language for each side. Say, for example, I wanted to chat with a person who only spoke Spanish. I would select English for my side of the screen, and Spanish for their side. Then we would just tap the microphone button on our respective side of the screen to talk, and the app does the rest. It’s possible to have a real-time conversation with Google Translate’s talk feature, but it’s much clunkier and less conducive to actual back-and-forth conversation.

Once you’ve looked up a translation, both apps will let you listen to an audio file so you know the correct pronunciation. It’s not available for every language, but it’s a nice touch when it is. You can also expand a translation to take up your entire screen if you want to show someone a phrase like a cue card. Both apps also keep a record of your past translations, so you can quickly refer to something you’ve already looked up. Google Translate lets you favorite translations with stars so they’re saved forever, and Microsoft Translator does the same thing, but with pins.

Microsoft Translator does one more thing that gives it a slight edge, though: it has a built-in phrasebook for quickly looking up phrases for travel directions, lodging, health, and more. It’s nice to have in the moment, but it’s also helpful if you’re trying to actually learn the language you’re translating.

Google Offers More Languages, But Microsoft Chooses Quality Over Quantity

Google Translate’s real-time video translations are magical, there’s no doubt about it. And the recent addition of Google Neural Machine Translation has improved the accuracy of whole sentence translations by 60% for tough workflows like Chinese-to-English. Add that on to the fact that Google Translate offers more languages overall, can translate text within other apps on Android, and it’s obvious why it’s currently the most popular choice.

That said, I don’t feel like Google Translate’s features make it stand above its competition anymore. Real-time video translation is awesome, but I don’t know how often I’d actually use it over just snapping a photo to do the same thing (something both apps can do just fine). And I’m not sure who the handwriting feature is for, but perhaps it’s useful for languages that aren’t easily adapted to standard keyboards. Talking is much faster either way, so it feels a bit unnecessary.

Microsoft Translator puts a focus on conversation with its split-screen mode, and the Apple Watch and Android Wear apps—which Google doesn’t have for some reason—let you quickly translate phrases with just a tap on your wrist. If you have a smartwatch, Microsoft Translator is the obvious choice. Sure, it doesn’t offer as many languages, but it covers all the big ones and gives full translation support to most of them. I can’t say how Microsoft’s translations of whole sentences hold up to Google’s shiny new Neural Machine Translation system, but for most users it would probably be hard to tell the difference anyway.

You can’t go wrong with either of these translation tools. They both get the job done, and Microsoft has made a serious effort to compete with Google’s more popular tool. In fact, I went into this comparison expecting Google Translate to dominate, but Microsoft Translator impressed me. So much so that I might actually use it instead of Google Translate on my upcoming trip to Japan.

Google Maps v9.39 adds a handy traffic widget and hints at live data about busy places

Google Maps made it into the update cycle this week, bumping the version number up to 9.39. This update appears to be a bit lighter than many from the last few months, but it’s not completely lacking improvements. There’s a new shortcut that can be used to jump directly into the traffic screen. A quick teardown also reveals a potential improvement to the busyness chart on many locations. As always, we’ve got a link below to pick up the APK.

What’s New

Unofficial Changelog:

  • New traffic widget

Traffic widget

2016-10-14 17.39.292016-10-14 17.37.442016-10-14 17.39.15

Thanks to the millions of active smartphones roaming around the planet at any given time, Google is able to create a fairly accurate image of what traffic conditions are like. A few weeks back, Google added a new notification to to warn users about potential traffic issues before they get on the road, linking it to a screen with a map with the current traffic situation. If that notification wasn’t quite timely enough, the new version of Maps introduces a more consistent way to get back to that screen at any time with a handy shortcut for your homescreen.

There are two ways to add the shortcut to your homescreen. To begin with, it’s located in the regular widget/shortcut list, so there’s no need to even open the Maps app to track it down, unlike the Timeline shortcut (for no obvious reason). If you end up on the traffic screen through the notification, you can also drag the card upward to find a suggestion to add the shortcut.

Teardown

Disclaimer: Teardowns are based on evidence found inside of apks (Android’s application package) and are necessarily speculative and usually based on incomplete information. It’s possible that the guesses made here are totally and completely wrong. Even when predictions are correct, there is always a chance that plans could change or may be canceled entirely. Much like rumors, nothing is certain until it’s officially announced and released. The features discussed below are probably not live yet, or may only be live for a small percentage of users. Unless stated otherwise, don’t expect to see these features if you install the apk.

Live busy-ness scale

2016-10-14 20.28.13nexus2cee_Screenshot_20160924-113543

Left: current view in Maps. Right: live data from dogfood version of Google Search.

The scale showing popular times can be a handy way to figure out if you’re about to walk into a restaurant or other public location and find it packed to the brim with people. However, the scale can occasionally be misleading, especially if there are special events, recent changes, or some other factor that’s either driving people to the same place, or possible away from it. If you’re really trying to judge how full a place is before walking in the door, you really need up-to-date information… And that’s exactly what Google Maps has in store.

<string name=”BUSYNESS_LIVE”>LIVE</string>

It’s really no surprise this feature is coming, the same thing recently turned up in a dogfood version of the web interface for Google Search. There’s not much to look at for evidence – just a single string – but as the screenshot above shows, it doesn’t take much to make the confirmation. The line is named busyness_live, which shares the same busyness prefix found in the other strings used with the popular times chart. It’s safe to assume the two charts will look the same, given that the two versions are generally identical.

Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

Daydream Keyboard now available on the Play Store

Although the Daydream VR platform isn’t available to the public yet, Google has already released its companion keyboard onto the Play Store which allows for text input in all Daydream apps.

If you’ve never used a keyboard in VR before, you can try to use Samsung’s Gear VR keyboard to get an idea. A dot remains in the center of your view, acting as a cursor. Then, the user points their head onto each individual letter and taps the touchpad on the Gear VR headset to input a character.

The layout for this keyboard looks much like the Google Keyboard that comes stock on Nexus devices, as well as this year’s Moto smartphones.

Daydream Keyboard - Google Play Store Daydream Keyboard - Google Play Store Daydream Keyboard - Google Play Store
Daydream Keyboard – Google Play Store

You might not be able to install it, however, as Google notes that the Daydream keyboard is only compatible with Daydream-ready phones and uninstalling the Daydream keyboard could cause some Daydream apps to force-close.

If you’re a Nexus 6P owner, however, you may be pleased to find that the Daydream Keyboard is installable on the Huawei-made Nexus device (as per Android Police, considering Google said existing smartphones “most likely” will not work with Daydream.

The Daydream “View” headset will be available on the Play Store, Verizon, and Best Buy stores starting in November in the US. Remember, if you pre-ordered a Pixel (XL) device, you should have gotten an email regarding a free Daydream View via a promo code.

BlackBerry says it’s done designing and building its own phones | ESIST

1.jpg

BlackBerry has announced that it plans to stop making its own phones as the struggling company continues to focus on its software and security products. This is far from the end of BlackBerry devices, the production of which will be outsourced to third-party manufacturers — as was the case with the company’s recent DTEK 50, a clone of Alcatel’s Idol 4 with BlackBerry branding.

“The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners,” said CEO John Chen in a statement. Elsewhere he stated: “We are reaching an inflection point with our strategy. Our financial foundation is strong, and our pivot to software is taking hold.”

This isn’t surprising news considering BlackBerry’s ongoing struggle in the mobile market. According to estimates from Gartner, the company claimed just 0.1 percent of the market in the second quarter, equating to sales of some 400,400 units. The last BlackBerry phone manufactured by the company was the Priv, the company’s first Android-powered device, released November last year.

At that time, Chen said that the company would need to sell 5 million phones a year to stay in the consumer hardware business, a figure he later revised to 3 million. The news, then, that internal hardware development should cease is not the end of BlackBerry as a consumer tech company. That happened years ago, and the firm has since been slowly covering its retreat, targeting only businesses and governments and bolstering its reputation for security.

Today’s second quarter financial results focused on this possible future, highlighting new software like BlackBerry Radar (providing “end-to-end asset tracking” for the internet of things), and BlackBerry Hub+ (a productivity suite for Android). Chen noted that the company was on track to deliver 30 percent revenue growth in software and services for the full fiscal year, but the results for this quarter were clearer: a net loss of  $372 million on revenue of  $334 million.

Adblock Plus now sells ads

Adblock Plus is launching a new service that… uh, puts more ads on your screen.

Rather than stripping all ads from the internet forever, Adblock Plus is hoping to replace the bad ads — anything it deems too big, too ugly, or too intrusive — with good ads, ones that are smaller, subtler, and theoretically much less annoying.

It’ll begin doing that through an ad marketplace, which will allow blogs and other website operators to pick out so-called “acceptable” ads and place them on their pages. If a visitor using Adblock Plus comes to the page, they’ll be shown those “acceptable ads,” instead of whatever ads the site would normally run.

“It allows you to treat the two different ecosystems completely differently and monetize each one,” says Ben Williams, Adblock Plus’ operations and communications director. “And crucially, monetize the ad blockers on on their own terms.”

Apple to Clean Up App Store, Eliminate Outdated and Non-Functional Apps – ESIST

Apple today notified developers about some upcoming changes to the App Store, which are designed to make it easier for customers to find high-quality app content.

Starting on September 7, Apple will begin removing old, outdated apps that have not received compatibility updates, do not comply with current review guidelines, or that no longer function as intended. This will see the elimination of many older apps that have been long abandoned.

Quality is extremely important to us. We know that many of you work hard to build innovative apps and update your apps on the App Store with new content and features. However, there are also apps on the App Store that no longer function as intended or follow current review guidelines, and others which have not been supported with compatibility updates for a long time. We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps for these issues, notifying their developers, and removing problematic and abandoned apps from the App Store.

Apps across all categories will be subject to Apple’s new review process this September. Developers with problematic apps will be notified and will have 30 days to make changes to their app to prevent it from being removed from the App Store. Apps that crash on launch will, however, be removed from the App Store immediately.

Adobe to support advanced photo format debuting in Canon’s hot new SLR – ESIST

Don’t panic, Lightroom fans, Adobe Systems will support the new photo format Canon tucked into its hot new SLR, the EOS 5D Mark IV.

Adobe’s Lightroom, for editing and cataloging photos, has a particular emphasis on “raw” photo formats that offer more editing flexibility and image quality than ordinary JPEG but that are more of a hassle to handle. Canon’s new $3,500 5D Mark IV, introduced Thursday, adds a new variety called dual-pixel raw that lets photographers fine-tune focus after a shot was taken. To take advantage of dual-pixel raw, though, photographers will have to use Canon’s own raw-processing software, Digital Photo Professional.

But not forever.

“We’re working on it,” Adobe spokesman Roman Skuratovskiy said Thursday. He declined to say when Adobe would add the update to Lightroom and its cousin, Photoshop, though.

Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery for Mac – Review

photomac7

I’m sure it’s happened to you at some point or other, a drive dies   or a memory card stops working for some unknown reason. I’ve used pretty much every memory card and hard disk on the market at some point or another, and have lost images to the “corruption demons” with a couple of them… Here’s how to get those files back!

It’s not always the fault of the card or the drive – a premature ejection like pulling the drive out of your computer / usb / firewire or indeed grabbing a card out of your camera while it’s writing a file – most of the time the file system (like a set of drawers on the card or drive) manages to put the data away before stopping, but sometimes, like my office floor, things are left everywhere and that’s when you encounter data corruption (very basically).

Stellar Phoenix Mac photo recovery is a utility that recovers deleted, formatted, lost photos, pictures, songs, movies, and other multimedia files from Mac systems.

  • Recovers from Mac – Systems, External Drives, USB Drives, iPod and Digital Cameras
  • Supports a wide range of image, audio, and video file formats
  • Supports hard drives with capacities over 2 TB
  • Efficient Scan Engine scans the storage media faster
  • Also recovers Thumbnails of the corresponding image files
  • Compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 up to the Latest OS X Mavericks

What we say

After recovering from all kinds of old drives, CF cards (a 16mb one from a LONG time ago) including a 2TB disk, I am very happy with Stellar Phoenix Mac Photo recovery! It’s dead easy to use – you start it up, choose your drive and click recover… Sure, you can head into the advanced tab and recover only single file types if you wish, for example if you were after a set of CR2 files (Canon RAW) from a CF card, you could narrow your search down to just those files. Once scanned you can save the scan / found files information if you wish to restore the files at a later date.

There are two versions of the software, one that simply recovers any of your media files and another slightly more expensive ($59.99 vs $49.99) version or you can download it for free which offers free evaluation of the software & preview of all the lost files and folder that can be recovered by the software. I am using the regular version and I did encounter a couple of corrupt images, I hope to run through the same tests with the platinum version soon.

Recovery time was about average based on my previous experience (Yes, the photo at the top is me and yes, we’d just lost a 9TB storage array… long story) with a CF card of 16GB taking a bit over an hour and a 2TB drive via USB taking about a day and a half. In both cases I was able to successfully recover the data I needed.

Data recovery isn’t always guaranteed, I’m not going to lie – sometimes the pretty photographs just don’t want to come back. ever. I was able to recover everything I set out to recover using Stellar Phoenix Mac Photo software in this case.

Conclusion:  With my experience with recovery software, I will gladly  recommend this software if you find yourself in a spot of digital bother.

Pros

This product makes sure you don’t have to suffer from data loss.

Very Easy to Operate

You can preview recoverable files in demo version

3 Step recovery process and an intuitive user interface

Very Easy and User-Friendly tool

Very reasonably priced

Can retrieve more pictures than other software

Supports lost image preview

Cons

Paid Software but reasonable

What others say:

“I lost over a dozen of pictures of a recent vacation to a corrupted SD card. However I used photo recovery software from Stellar to quickly reclaim all lost photos and media files and I was very satisfied. I recommend this software to anyone who ever faces photo or media files loss.”

“Being a Professional Photographer, I am usually busy in outdoor shoots. During one of an assignment, I had all NEF images stored in my Nikon DSLR CF card. After the shoot, when I returned back to view the NEF files on my Mac, then the images did not appear and my Mac flashed some error message. At first I was shocked to know that all of my hard work got wasted. But, a ray of hope was visible when I got to know about Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery. The software helped me get back all of my pictures effortlessly. Thanks!”

The absence of Torrentz will certainly be felt, as this was the world’s largest meta-search resource for torrents.

The move follows the recent demise of Kickass Torrents (KAT), a file-sharing service that was shut down after its alleged founder was apprehended in Poland.

Torrentz was founded in 2003, amassing a huge following ever since. The site disabled its search functionality “a few hours ago and without warning,”TorrentFreak notes. It’s unclear why the site shut down, and whether there’s any connection with the recent legal action against KAT.

Torrentz predates The Pirate Bay, which was also shut down briefly almost two years ago, but the site did not host torrent files for years. Initially, it did host torrent sites, but then it pivoted to search, offering users a way to find links to the files they were looking after.

NSF dedicates $35 million to improving software used in science and education | ESIST

Big data is more important than ever in just about every scientific discipline — and the data is bigger than ever, too. To help manage that data and get it into the hands of scientists and students, the National Science Foundation is putting $35 million towards a pair of software institutes that will build the tools necessary for 21st-century research.

The Molecular Sciences Software Institute will focus on — you guessed it — the molecular sciences. That’s everything from quantum chemistry and materials science to pharmacology and molecular biology.

Research performed at this level of organization benefits greatly from computer models, but those models are limited in the number of factors, atoms, space, or time that can be simulated accurately. The MolSSI will be led by Virginia Tech computational chemist Daniel Crawford and hosted at the school’s Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg.

CRC sign

The plan is to improve the software and infrastructure used in the field, and share those resources with the rest of the world. Sounds vague, but the specifics would probably be as difficult to describe as the problems these scientists are tackling.

“The institute will enable computational scientists to tackle problems that are orders of magnitude larger and more complex than those currently within our grasp,” Crawford said in the NSF’s announcement.

A double handful of other universities will be on the board of directors: Rice, Iowa State, Stanford, Rutgers, Stony Brook, UC Berkeley, and USC. Crawford told Virginia Tech’s news service that the group plans to add more collaborators, from Europe and Asia to start.

Researchers raise more than two million dollars to rethink cybersecurity

Is antivirus software already dead? That’s certainly what George Candea believes, and he’s not the only computer security expert who says so. “Large enterprises and government agencies often deploy antivirus software to satisfy legal obligations or to meet contractual requirements, not because they really believe that the software can defend them,” says George Candea. Together with some of his former PhD students, the EPFL professor founded Cyberhaven, a startup that is developing a brand new approach to computer security. And their results are promising. In a third party test, their solution warded off all 144 cyber attacks that had been hand-crafted by professional penetration testers, whereas so-called heuristic modern security products caught just over 20 of them. As for the best classical antivirus software tested, it only caught one. “I think it just got lucky!,” muses the researcher. 1.jpg

Since it was founded in early 2015, Cyberhaven has had revenues of 640,000 dollars. This is encouraging for such a young company, and it enabled them to raise more than two million dollars in a first round of financing from Accomplice, one of the most active early-stage venture capital firms on the US East Coast. Cyberhaven will use the funds to set up its office in Boston and fuel the growth of its R&D team in Switzerland, at the EPFL Innovation Park.

Cyberhaven’s solution is marketed mainly to enterprises and , which are all targets of sophisticated cyber attacks. Cyber criminals develop targeted malware that is unique to each of their attack campaigns. As a result, most of today’s are not effective against such new attacks. So organizations try to have defense perimeters within defense perimeters to build up so-called “defense in depth.” “Information security officers eventually reach the point where their infrastructure is so complex that they simply cannot manage it anymore,” says George Candea.

Defending “data in operation” against attack

The team of EPFL researchers developed a completely novel approach to defend sensitive documents against in a way that significantly simplifies an organization’s security infrastructure. The approach complements what is perhaps the most effective security tool today, namely encryption – available in a wide variety of programs we use daily, including Microsoft Office.

Alas, encrypting documents is not enough to safeguard them. When opening an encrypted file, such as a text document, the application must first decrypt it in order to operate on it. As a result, the document’s data is exposed. By exploiting vulnerabilities in applications like the Word text editor, malware hijacks them and steals all the documents that the application can access and decrypt. This is a real Achilles’ heel of enterprise security, and encryption cannot solve it.

Cyberhaven’s solution safeguards sensitive documents together with the relevant applications in a safe haven. “Only documents that are safe for these applications can enter the safe haven, and that also protects the integrity of the applications. Our defense technology is based on deep application analysis and has nothing to do with heuristics-based solutions that try to guess malicious behavior. We literally analyze every instruction, we never guess.” Developing the technology took seven years of research at EPFL and is protected by four EPFL patents that have been licensed to Cyberhaven.

UK robot cars to challenge Google -ESIST

A British firm has developed autonomous car software that could be used by a variety of vehicle manufacturers.

Most of the high-profile work on self-driving cars has come out of the United States, where Google and Tesla have been testing their technology.

Oxford-based Oxbotica took the BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones for a drive and told him that the technology would be tested in a public trial in London this year.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? Why upgrade Window 10? Is Windows 10 good? – ESIST

By

The free upgrade to Windows 10 ends in two weeks! Should I upgrade to Windows 10? Is Windows 10 any good? We explain who should upgrade to the new version of the OS, plus things to consider if you’re using older hardware and software.

Windows 10 will cease to be a free update on 29 July 2016, exactly a year after its initial release to the general public. After the free upgrade period, Windows 10 Home will cost £99.99 and the Pro version will set you back £189.99.

Those who choose upgrade to Windows 10 will also benefit from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update that will become available on 2 August 2016. (Read more about the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.)

With many new features, and various system improvements upgrading is a no-brainer for most people, and in our review we explain in more depth why we’re impressed. Here, though, we’ll explain who should and shouldn’t upgrade: the pros and cons of Windows 10.

If you’re not sure now is the right time to upgrade, there are steps you can take. If you’re looking to upgrade your computer parts and want to be on Windows 10, you should upgrade and extract your new Windows 10 product key using ProduKey. This means you can upgrade your new computer and later have the option to install Windows 10 directly on the new machine.

Microsoft has done everything it can to convince people to take advantage of the Windows 10 upgrade offer, and in the final few weeks has resorted to a full-screen ‘sorry to interrupt…’ message as a last-ditch attempt. However, if you’re adamant that you don’t want to upgrade, we suggest you also read how to stay on Windows 7 or 8 forever.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? Can I downgrade Windows 10?

One of the first questions we’re often asked when it comes to upgrading a system is how easily can you go back to your old one if you don’t like it. The answer with Windows 10 is that it’s very easy.

Microsoft has built in a simple process that only requires a few clicks to have the system roll back to your previous version of Windows (so long as you haven’t deleted the windows.old folder in which the previous version lives). You can read our guide to downgrading Windows 10.

When we tested this helpful feature it successfully took data and installed apps with it, meaning you’re good to go as soon as the process is complete. Of course, as with any operating system installation, you’ll want to make a full backup of your data before you begin either the upgrade or the downgrade. We’re heard that the roll-back doesn’t always work perfectly, so there is a chance that upgrading and rolling back won’t be a seamless process: bear this in mind if you’re thinking about upgrading just to see whether you like Windows 10. Again, make a FULL backup beforehand to guard against any problems.

Should I upgrade to Windows 10? It’s free… until 29 July 2016!

The biggest decision taken by Microsoft with Windows 10 was to offer the OS as a free upgrade to current users of Windows 7 and 8.1. In fact there’s a good chance that your PC is already displaying a new icon in the system tray, prompting you to upgrade. For XP or Vista users Windows 10 is a paid upgrade, so it’s a bigger decision. As a reminder the free upgrade runs out on 29 July 2016 – so if you’re looking to upgrade, make sure you’ve completed the process before the date.

Apple’s Mac sales suffer as PCs face bleak future | ESIST

iMac

The overall PC market has experienced another decline in sales – no surprise there – but there is a bright spot in the latest Gartner report, which is that US shipments actually picked up this quarter.

Gartner’s figures for Q2 of 2016 showed a total of 64.3 million PCs were shipped worldwide, which represents a decline of 5.2% compared to the same quarter the previous year.

That’s the seventh quarter running in which PC sales have dropped, but there was a surprising reversal of the trend in North America, where shipment numbers increased slightly, picking up to the tune of 1.4%.

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, observed: “The second and third quarter are typically PC buying season for the US public sectors. Positive second-quarter results could suggest healthy PC sales activities among the public sectors. There is an opportunity for a Windows 10 refresh among businesses, which we expect to see more toward the end of 2016 to the beginning of 2017.”

However, Europe remained weak, with PC shipments in EMEA dropping by 4.3%, and while Brexit had no impact on this quarter, it’s expected that future UK sales figures will be seriously hit by the country’s vote to exit the EU (with unfavourable currency fluctuations causing manufacturers to hike prices).

Brexit blues

Isabelle Durand, another principal research analyst at Gartner, commented: “Post-Brexit sterling was sharply weaker against the dollar, and this will trigger price increases that will likely cause downward pressure on fourth-quarter sales in the UK.”

More bad news on the way, then…

Looking at the worldwide figures for individual PC vendors, Lenovo remains top holding a 20.5% market share with 13.2 million PCs shipped – but that was a drop of 2.2% year-on-year.

HP is actually catching Lenovo in second place, moving up to a 19.1% market share (12.3 million PCs sold) which represented a gain of 1.8% on Q2 2015. Third place Dell saw even more growth with a 3.1% year-on-year increase meaning it captured a market share of 15.2%.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, came with Apple slipping from fourth to fifth place, being hit by a drop of 4.9% in overall shipments year-on-year. Asus moved ahead of Apple with a 1.3% increase giving it a total market share of 7.3%, which was just ahead of Cupertino’s 7.1%.

However, this isn’t such a shock when you consider other recent analyst reports which have pointed to a big decline in MacBook shipments in the first quarter of this year. Times are tough for everyone, even Apple…

Durand noted: “We remain cautious for 2016. Most companies will be focused on surviving the challenges of the next 12 months. The brightest spot in the market could perhaps be an increase in average selling prices, with good sales of high-end gaming PCs and hybrid laptops fuelling this change.”

Again, there’s nothing new there – 2-in-1 convertibles have long been highlighted as a major growth area going against the grain of the PC industry on the whole, which is why plenty of PC manufacturers are looking to produce these hybrid devices.

The best free PDF to Word converters 2016 | ESIST

Retake control of your awkward PDFs with these conversion tools
1.jpg

Convert PDFs to Word documents

If the precise formatting and fonts of a document are essential, PDF is the perfect format. It requires nothing more than a competent PDF reader for documents to display precisely; everything’s packaged in and ready to go. Which is all lovely until you need to extract some of that information.

PDFs, if you’re using software like Adobe Reader, are usually a one-way street, consigning you to look and not touch. Unless you possess the original document used to generate the PDF in the first place, editing is going to be out of your reach.

Or is it? We’re here to look at the solution: PDF to Word converters. These tools will analyse PDF files, extract the text and images, and make the best stab they can at creating a Microsoft Word-compatible file that replicates the source. Results are unlikely to be absolutely perfect – particularly if the text in your PDF has been scanned or flattened to an image. Look for a converter with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) if you do have flattened documents.

We tested using a sample magazine page from our chums at Computer Arts, and opened the results in Microsoft Word 2010. Note that LibreOffice’s much looser interpretation of the DOCX standard will likely lead to quite poor results.

2
Foxyutils did the best job of converting our tricky PDF to a Word document, even coping well with its tough typefaces

1. Foxyutils

A wily utility that copes well with unusual fonts

Foxyutils’ PDF to Word converter takes the top spot in our test for several reasons. First, it was by far the cleverest when it came to picking a font similar to that of our test document, outputting a Word file very close to the original PDF. Second, it did well with the images in our document, recognising that there was more than one and breaking them up appropriately. And third, when you use Foxyutils’ tools, you contribute to the company’s tree-planting efforts. Isn’t that nice?

There are slight restrictions – a lack of OCR chief among them – and obviously you’ll need internet connectivity to get the job done. But the lack of a dedicated software package to install, Foxyutils’ use of SSL, and its promise to delete files as soon as they’re downloaded means you could use this in a business situation if required.

3.jpg
Another online converter, Nitro did a good job with our magazine page, but it’s a shame you have to wait for the document to be emailed rather than downloading it directly from the site

2. Nitro PDF to Word Converter

Quick, solid PDF conversion with a couple of niggles

You’d be forgiven for missing the free online version of Nitro PDF to Word Converter when visiting its site, given that it’s so smothered in adverts for its paid-for desktop app, but this is a perfectly competent free tool – no OCR though, sadly – suitable for occasional use. Upload your PDF, give it an email address to send the results to, and it’ll transform that PDF into Word, Excel or Powerpoint files and vice versa; we wouldn’t recommend using the Excel converter for mission-critical work, however.

We were impressed with its attempt at converting our test document. There was a bit of text cleanup required, possibly as a result of the unusual font, but it separated the page’s images into individually editable boxes, got the layout perfectly correct, and even managed to replicate the drop-cap, a feature that’s often missed. Overall, not a bad job at all – we’d have preferred a direct download rather than it being delivered via email, but that’s a small gripe.

4.jpg
UniPDF isn’t perfect, but it copes well with different fonts and can process PDFs in batches

3. UniPDF

Great for batch processing but not compatible with all files

UniPDF is a completely free Windows desktop app (unless you’re using it commercially) but one which fell over for an unspecified reason when converting our test PDF to Word format. But let’s not be hasty here: UniPDF happily extracted the raw text, had no problem converting the PDF to a pixel-perfect PNG file, and did an good job of converting that very same PDF to HTML format, which we’ll count as at least a partial pass.

Although UniPDF doesn’t support OCR (so flattened PDFs won’t convert to editable text) we were impressed with its ability to translate our document’s mildly unusual fonts into similar examples. It’s also an easy app to use if you’re doing batch processing – just drag in a folder full of PDFs, hit ‘convert’ and it’ll go through each automatically.

5.jpg
Free File Converter doesn’t do the best job with text, but it can handle very large PDFs

4. Free File Converter

Quick, easy and dirty converter that does more than just Word

Free File Converter couldn’t be simpler: upload your PDF, select an output format (everything from doc to ebook formats like EPUB and MOBI) and click the button to get a download link to your converted file. As you might expect, it offers a number of different format conversions besides just PDFs, although there’s no OCR to be seen.

Results were just all right. Some of the text formatting Free File Converter gave us was a bit off, with certain headlines running over from one line to two, and it rendered all of the images on the page as a single background graphic, limiting flexibility.

But there’s one huge upside: Free File Converter can handle PDFs up to 300MB in size, so if you’ve got a huge, simple PDF to process it could be just the trick.

5.jpg
OnlineOCR works best with simple documents; complex fonts and images are beyond its capabilities

5. OnlineOCR

An OCR specialist – as long as you feed it the right file

Our sole OCR-only tool in this test, but there’s a reason: OCR works well in certain circumstances, and very poorly in others. Our magazine page, when flattened and run through OnlineOCR‘s converter, did not fare well. Whether this is a limitation of the unusual fonts or the background images we’re not sure, but the mess it made of the boxes at the bottom of the page suggest it’s just not great at this sort of complex work.

That’s not to say it’s a poor tool. Far from it; this outperforms a number of competing sites in its class, so much so that we’ve actually used OnlineOCR here at TechRadar to pull text from magazines so old that their archive discs have crumbled – although this required a lot of preprocessing to improve the clarity and contrast of text.

Scanned PDFs of black text on white background tend to work perfectly without any fiddling, so if you’ve got a suitable source you’ll get on well with this tool.

Is G2A a legitimate website? YES!- ESIST

G2A is an online marketplace for game activation keys as well as Xbox Live and PSN credit. It seems too good to be true, so is G2A safe or a scam? Here’s our experience of buying from G2A.

By

Is G2A safe or a scam?
Is G2A safe or a scam?

If you saw a website offering heavily discounted activation keys for software, you’d be right to be suspicious. In this day and age it’s tricky to tell scams from legit businesses, and many people ask us whether it’s safe to buy games from G2A.com. So is G2A safe? Here’s what we know.

G2A.com is a website that sells keys for PC games and activation codes for PSN and Xbox Live credit, as well as codes for other software. However, G2A itself does not sell these codes. It is purely a marketplace – exactly like ebay – where people can sell game codes. What you do is buy your key, wait for it to be emailed to you, then head to the relevant platform: Ubisoft Uplay, Steam etc, log in and select the option to activate a game.

You paste in your key and then download the game files from the platform’s servers: not G2A.

Update 4 Jan 2016: After publishing this article in May 2015 without contacting G2A, the company got in touch with us in November and asked if we wanted any extra information. We’ve included a Q&A at the bottom which hopefully clarifies some of the questions raised in the comments at the foot of this page. We’ve also updated the entire article to correct some errors which were due to us not fully understanding how G2A works. For one thing, G2A does not sell any game keys directly. When you buy something, G2A acts as the intermediary, connecting buyer with seller.

Head to G2A.com and you’ll arrive at the company’s corporate site which explains the business model in more detail. Of course, they can say anything they like, but although there’s the odd typo, we found it very believable.

The company was set up by a group of enthusiastic gamers in Hong Kong with the aim of “providing the best digital game licences and retail service to all our partners and customers”. Unlike some companies which hide their contact details, G2A is happy to publish phone numbers and addresses: they have their headquarters in Hong Kong and a support office in Poland.

The game keys are offered by ‘marketplace sellers’, i.e. third parties who have keys to sell. These could be private individuals who have bought a game, but decided not to activate their key, or businesses who have bought keys in bulk in regions where they’re cheaper.

G2A automatically adds ‘G2A Shield’ to your shopping cart when you being the purchase process. This is essentially insurance against a non-working key. It costs around 70p, so while some may object to paying it on the grounds that all keys should be legitimate, it means you are guaranteed a valid replacement key or a complete refund.

Is G2A safe or a scam?

We looked at various games and prices were all cheaper than when bought on their respective platforms and – in some cases – a lot cheaper.

The price you see is the base price, excluding G2A shield and excluding VAT, so factor this in when comparing prices on Steam, Amazon or any other reseller.

Before buying a game ourselves, we checked out a good selection of gaming forums to see how many people were complaining about G2A. When we did, we found that – overwhelmingly – people who’d actually purchased games said they’d received keys in just a few minutes and that they were genuine and valid.

Others pointed out that it was the same as buying products on the grey market and that the codes could be revoked or cancelled at some point in the future.

How to buy game codes from G2A

When you click on a game, you’ll usually see a price on the right, but check to see if it says “G2A Selected offer”. If it does, it’s a price from a marketplace seller. You can click on a seller to check their ratings, and how many keys they’ve sold. It’s easy to spot the good fromt he bad this way. If you’re buying direct from G2A, you don’t need to use G2A shield.

Is G2A safe or a scam?

Make sure you’re buying the correct region. Usually there’s a GLOBAL option, but if not, make sure the game will work in your region as you can’t get a refund if you mistakenly buy a Russian key but live in the UK.

We bought a global Uplay code for Watch Dogs from a marketplace seller: a snip at £3.18 including VAT, G2A Shield and the cheeky PayPal fee. Since we know PayPal doesn’t charge a fee to buyers, this is actually another G2A fee for paying via PayPal. But it’s a second level of protection as you can complain to PayPal if you don’t receive what you paid for.

Is G2A safe or a scam?

The good news is that the process was fast and easy. After paying, we were taken to a confirmation screen with a status indicator showing “processing” and a countdown timer for the average wait time. Within five minutes this had turned from orange to green and a link appeared inviting us to “Get CD KEY”.

Is G2A safe or a scam?

We did, and when pasted into the Uplay client the code was validated and we were able to download and play the game.

Is G2A safe or a scam?

We also had a confirmation email from PayPal saying we’d sent a payment to G2A.com.

More often than not things which seem too good to be true usually are, but in this case, you really can score a bargain.

G2A – Frequently asked questions

We asked the following questions to try to clarify how G2A works. The answers are from various G2A employees, with some questions being answered by more than one person. We have not edited the answers.

1. Where do the sellers of the game keys get their codes from?

The source of the game keys depends on the seller. Small sellers buy games on promotions, big sellers buy games straight from the distributors.

The major part of sellers on our platform are running their own businesses and obviously, that is their own company ‘trade secret’. G2A is a marketplace and in order to provide best service, we screen all sellers. We also provide reviews of each seller/merchant so that buyers can check the background of the seller before making a final decision.

2. Are the sellers private individuals or businesses?

Everyone can sell on G2A.COM so we have all types of sellers: from private persons, games distributors, game developers and wholesale sellers. There are more than 50,000 sellers on G2A Marketplace.

We’re also preparing tailored solutions for game developers and publishers (including Indi developers), to give them a very special spot on G2A. Some of them are already selling on our marketplace and getting great results.

3. How can they sell them so much cheaper than on Steam, Uplay or on Amazon?

If you are buying games on special promotions you can even get 90% discount so you are able to ‘sell the games on’ cheaper. If you are a big seller you are high in the chain of games suppliers and they give you good prices.

G2A.com is a global solution and the global market is much bigger than can be imagined. G2A brings many brilliant opportunities for local sellers and buyers to trade their digital products globally

4. Are the codes from gamers who have played the game and are now selling it on ‘second hand’ or ‘used’?

If we’re talking about activation codes for games, you’re able to use just once and it’ll bind to your account. That means you’re not able to sell it anymore.

There is no possibility of trading a game-key that has already been activated. However in the gaming market there is quite a flourishing trade in games in boxes “on second hand”. This case does not concern G2A because on our platform you can buy and sell exclusively digital products.

5. Most game codes, such as Steam or Uplay, are bound to an account and cannot be ‘de-registered’ and then sold on. Is that correct?

There is a way to deactivate the game from Steam, Uplay or Origin account but if you do this, you won’t be able to activate the same code again.

Amazon’s Alexa now accepts voice commands to buy stuff for you

1.jpg

If there was any doubt that Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is a Trojan horse designed to get people to buy more things from Amazon, let those doubts be dispelled.

The online retail giant announced on Friday that Alexa, which is supported by the Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Fire TV, will now let you order “tens of millions” of Amazon Prime products, even if you’ve never ordered the item from Amazon before.

To place an order, all you have to do is say “Alexa, order ____.” (For example, “Alexa, order AAA batteries” or “Alexa, order Old Spice deodorant.”)

Just say “Alexa, order AAA batteries” or “Alexa, order Old Spice deodorant.”

According to Amazon, Alexa will then suggest a product that ships with Prime, apply any discounts, and calculate your total. Say “yes” to confirm, and you’ve completed the purchase.

With more competition on the way from Google Home by the end of 2016 — and Apple rumored to be working on an Echo-like device powered by Siri — Amazon is not letting up on new uses for Alexa and its Echo products.

The company also recently gave Alexa the ability to call you a Lyft car. (Alexa could already call an Uber.)

The future is now. What a time to be alive!

Okta hired Goldman Sach for IPO or sale – ESIST

Okta, a U.S. cloud identity management company valued at $1.2 billion in its latest private todd-mckinnon-okta-ceo.jpgfundraising round, has hired Goldman Sachs to lead an initial public offering or outright
sale, people familiar with the matter said.

Okta’s exploration of both an IPO and a sale underscores the dilemma faced by several technology companies this year, as the frothy stock market valuations of many of their peers begin to come down, prompting potential buyers to enter the fray.

Okta could file for an IPO as early as the second half of this year, the people said this week. However, the San Francisco-based company has also held talks with technology peers about being acquired, and could pursue a sale if it believes it can fetch a significantly higher valuation than in an IPO, the people added.

The sources asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. Okta and Goldman Sachs declined to comment.

Choppy market

The market for technology IPOs remains choppy. Software provider Twilio Inc is expected to price its initial public offering on Wednesday, marking only the third U.S. technology IPO of the year.

Meanwhile, acquisitions have been picking up. Earlier this month, technology security firm Symantec Corp said it would buy privately held cyber security company Blue Coat Systems Inc for $4.65 billion in a cash deal that will ramp up Symantec’s enterprise security business.

Blue Coat had been planning for an IPO that it thought would value the company at roughly $3.8 billion, a source familiar with the IPO said, asking not to be named as the valuation was not public.

One of Okta’s competitors in identity management, Denver, Colorado-based Ping Identity Corp, was also sold earlier this month. The acquirer, private equity firm `Vista Equity Partners Management LLC valued Ping at more than $600 million, according to a source familiar with the deal, who asked not to be named because the figure is not public.

Okta helps companies organize passwords and authenticate the identity of employees who log into work applications made by other software firms. Its customers include satellite TV provider Dish Network Corp and hospitality company MGM Resorts International .

Okta has raised a total of roughly $230 million to date with investors such as Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners and Khosla Ventures, Janus Capital Group and Altimeter Capital.
