Facebook has confirmed it does in fact use phone numbers that users provided it for security purposes to also target them with ads.
Specifically a phone number handed over for two factor authentication (2FA) — a security technique that adds a second layer of authentication to help keep accounts secure.
Facebook’s confession follows a story Gizmodo ran a story yesterday, related to research work carried out by academics at two U.S. universities who ran a study in which they say they were able to demonstrate the company uses pieces of personal information that individuals did not explicitly provide it to, nonetheless, target them with ads.
While it’s been — if not clear, then at least evident — for a number of years that Facebook uses contact details of individuals who never personally provided their information for ad targeting purposes (harvesting people’s personal data by other means, such as other users’ mobile phone contact books which the Facebook app uploads), the revelation that numbers provided to Facebook by users in good faith, for the purpose of 2FA, are also, in its view, fair game for ads has not been so explicitly ‘fessed up to before.

Robotically built architecture is here, and it’s already taken myriad forms. We’ve seen multi-axis arms autonomously build timber frames and large-scale 3D printer craft entire army barracks. Now you can add mudslinging drones to the list of technological advancements.
Architect Stephanie Chaltiel recently showed off Mud Shell, an experimental project that uses drones to help build mud dwellings that she hopes someday will be used as emergency shelter.

In our latest look at the new firmware, we’re now exploring how Tesla Autopilot on Version 9 works: anything from Mad Max mode to path planning and more.
Now we’re looking at Tesla Autopilot on the new update.
As we previously reported, the biggest difference is the new ‘Navigate on Autopilot’ feature, which enables more automation on Autopilot while driving on the highway with a destination in the navigation system.
Under the mode, Autopilot will suggest its own lane changes to get to your destination.
With new pictures released by lambaus on /r/Teslamotors, we now have a better idea of how Tesla intends for drivers to use the feature.

China’s TENAA, the regulatory body that certifies phones before their release in the country, has revealed a new variant of the Oppo Find X, this one coming with 10GB of memory on board. GizmoChina was among the first to report this discovery, having been tipped off by a tweet highlighting the updated Find X entry. Depending on when it’s actually released, the 10GB Find X could be the first smartphone to have such a generous serving of RAM, though rumors have also surfaced of competition for that title from rival phone maker Vivo. In any case, we seem to be within striking distance of the first smartphone to have double-digit gigabytes of memory, so now is the time to start drafting up all those jokes about your new phone having more memory and storage — the Find X listed on TENAA comes with 256GB of space — than your old PC.

Darktrace, a U.K.-based cybersecurity firm has raised $50 million in a recent round of venture capital funding, putting the five-year-old company’s valuation at $1.65 billion, CNBC reported. Last year the company raised $75 million in funds, which put its valuation at $825 million.
This recent round of funding was led by Vitruvian Partners, and was backed by the company’s existing investors KKR and 1011 Ventures. The funding will go toward furthering Darktrace’s international expansion, according to TechCrunch.
Darktrace announced earlier this month its plans to increase its workforce by 25% and was considering raising funds to do so, Bloomberg reported at the time. “We’ve seen phenomenal growth and quite frankly we’re just trying to keep up with the demand at the moment,” Nicole Eagan, the company’s chief executive officer told the outlet. More recently, Eagan said Darktrace is seeing a lot of growth “in new and existing geographies,” according to TechCrunch.

In a Tuesday interview with Bloomberg, the head of Panasonic’s Automotive Division said that the company was on track to complete an additional three battery-cell production lines at Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory before the end of this year. That puts the expansion ahead of schedule for completion.
Panasonic is a joint owner of the Gigafactory. The company provides the “2170” battery cells that go into a Model 3 battery pack. Tesla packages those cells to complete the pack.
In the interview, Panasonic automotive executive Yoshio Ito told Bloomberg that “the bottleneck for Model 3 production has been our batteries.”
Ito added, “they just want us to make as many as possible.”

According to MacRumors (This article and its images were originally posted on MacRumors September 27, 2018 at 09:20AM.)
Earlier this month, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 4 with a new electrocardiogram (ECG) feature that measures the electrical activity of your heartbeat, providing you with a heart rhythm classification that can be shared with your doctor. The feature isn’t out yet, but it will be limited to Series 4 models in the United States later in 2018.
Today, 9to5Mac shared a potential time window for the launch of the ECG feature in the United Kingdom. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) explains that the process starts by examining Apple’s documentation surrounding the ECG feature and performing an audit of the quality assurance system.
While this step doesn’t appear to be lengthy, the proceeding steps could make the process longer. MHRA says it would require Apple to perform a new clinical investigation to judge the effectiveness of the ECG on Apple Watch, but Apple would likely not be able to use any of the data from the studies it’s already completed because MHRA requires companies to notify the regulator in advance of a study.
Once the study is submitted, MHRA has 60 days to approve it (which may become longer if the regulators have further inquiries for Apple), and then Apple can begin the study. These last few steps are what the MHRA say “could potentially add years” onto the debut of the ECG in the UK.

The Oculus GO is an amazing headset that offers standalone VR at a competitive price, but it isn’t designed for gaming and lacks those high-end features that Oculus Rift users have got used to over the past few years. Thankfully, it looks like that’ll be rectified with the launch of the Oculus Quest, the first standalone headset from the company to offer full 6DOF tracking without the need for a PC or tracking stations.
The best part? Many amazing Rift games are being ported over to the Oculus Quest in time for launch, and every headset will ship with the Rift’s Oculus Touch controllers for a high-end, immersive experience. Gamers have been waiting a long time for a gaming-focused standalone VR headset, and it looks like it could finally be around the corner.
Here’s all you need to know about Oculus Quest, from the release date window to pricing details and the key features of the standalone gaming VR headset.

What would it look like if cinema giant Red and virtual reality powerhouse Oculus created a camera? Today, you no longer have to guess. On Wednesday, September 26, Facebook and Red unveiled the first glimpse of the Manifold, a VR camera that packs in 16 8K lens-sensor combos from RED for 6DoF captures. The camera, the companies say, is the first end-to-end solution for 3D 360 content.
360 cameras are now common, but the Manifold captures 6DoF, or six degrees of freedom, which means the viewer can move in six directions while viewing that footage and see a view similar to what you’d see if you moved that way in the real scene. The 6DoF allows what’s called volumetric data — while you can’t see the scene from the other side of the room, you can move around and see the depth and details from the people and objects in the scene.

Bad news for Apple.
The Chinese hacking team Pangu is back and has once again surprised everyone with a jailbreak for iOS 12 running on the brand-new iPhone XS.
Well, that was really fast. Pangu jailbreak team has been quiet for a while, since it last released the untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 9 back in October 2015.
Jailbreaking is a process of removing limitations on Apple’s iOS devices so users can install third-party software not certified by Apple. Today, Android and iOS security researcher Min(Spark) Zheng shared a Tweet with two screenshots showing a working jailbreak on Apple’s newly released iPhone XS with A12 Bionic chip achieved by one of the Pangu researchers.

According to Wired (This article and its images were originally posted on Wired September 27, 2018 at 07:06AM.)
In a white and grey laboratory, where neat runs of orange cables on the walls provide a relief of color, a three-bladed propeller spins on the front of a Cessna “Iron Bird” test frame. It’s eerily quiet, free of the buzz you expect from a propeller-propelled aircraft. Just the whoosh of air, like a ceiling fan spinning at full speed. It’s slow at first, then faster, to the point that the blades blur out of vision, and only the bright chrome center cone is visible, as engineers at the Magnix Systems Integration Laboratory on Australia’s Gold Coast push the rig, before powering it down to a silent stop.
This is the start of airframe tests for a new motor, designed for the coming era of electric aviation. It’s a 350-horsepower machine that weighs just 110 pounds. But Magnix’s engineers focus on a different metric. “We were able to achieve 5 kW per kilogram,” says CEO Roei Ganzarski, about double the power to weight ratio of a Tesla motor. In a car, that balance is less important. At worst, a few extra pounds will add a bit of time to a 0 to 60 mph sprint or knock a few miles off the car’s range. But in a plane, the ongoing fight with gravity demands low weight coupled with high power. “If a plane doesn’t have the power to weight ratio that it needs, it simply won’t take off ,” Ganzarski says. “It becomes a safety issue.”

Picture a bulky, wired-up ultrasound machine, condensed to the size of an electric razor that can plug in to your phone, and fit into your pocket.
And better yet, it costs only $2,000.
The ultrasound-on-chip is the invention of Butterfly Network, founded by Jonathan Rothberg, who also had a hand in creating Next Generation DNA-sequencing, which made the then-exclusive DNA sequencing technology a standard part of most medical practices and clinics.
The new device, named Butterfly iQ, was inspired by Rothberg’s own personal experiences. His daughter was born with a disease called tubular sclerosis, which creates tiny tumors all over the body. The treatment procedure for this requires the use of a high-frequency ultrasound and MRI-imaging.

According to MacRumors (This article and its images were originally posted on MacRumors September 24, 2018 at 01:00PM.)
Apple today released the newest version of its operating system for Macs, macOS Mojave, to the public. macOS Mojave is a free download that’s available today for anyone who has a compatible Mac, and it comes after 11 rounds of betas.
macOS Mojave is a significant update to macOS, introducing a new systemwide Dark Mode, with Mojave users able to choose between a light theme or the new dark theme, which changes the color of the dock, menu bar, apps, and other elements.
Dark Mode is accompanied by Dynamic Desktops, aka wallpapers that subtly change throughout the day to mimic the progress of the sun across the sky outside.
In the afternoon, for example, the lighting of the Mojave Desert wallpaper is at its peak brightness and the image of the desert is depicted as it would be if you visited it in the daytime with well-lit sand dunes and a bright blue sky.
At night, the sky in the wallpaper shifts to darker blue to reflect that it’s now evening. The shift between daytime and nighttime happens gradually over the course of the day, so you’ll see subtle changes each time you look at your Mac’s display. It’s a neat new feature that can be enabled in the Desktop & Screensaver section of preferences.
macOS Mojave also includes Stacks, a new desktop organization system that keeps desktop files neat and organized to cut down on clutter. The Finder window has been enhanced with a new Gallery View for previewing larger versions of photos and documents, a Sidebar for easier navigation, a revamped Quick Look option for quick document editing, and Quick Actions, so you can do more in the Finder window than ever before.
Screenshots that you take on the Mac can now be edited using built-in Markup tools and a new management options that also allow for easy screen recording. Continuity camera, a useful new feature, allows you to import photos and document scans directly from an iPhone or iPad to the Mac.
The Apple News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos apps have been ported from iOS to macOS as part of a multiyear project Apple is working on to make it easier to bring iOS apps to Macs, and Apple has introduced several new privacy protections to keep your data safer than ever.
Apple is also making it harder for websites to track you with a range of new Safari tools, and it’s also easier to make and store secure, hard-to-guess passwords for each and every website.
Apple has added an entirely revamped Mac App Store to macOS Mojave that makes it easier to discover apps with a featured section and specific categories for games, creative apps, productivity apps, apps for developers, and more.
macOS Mojave was initially supposed to include a Group FaceTime feature that includes support for chatting with up to 32 people at one time, but it was removed in the macOS Mojave beta and will be introduced in a future Mojave update.
macOS Mojave drops support for many older Macs compared to macOS High Sierra and it is compatible primarily with machines manufactured in 2012 or later. A full list of Macs that can run Mojave is below:

The Dutch company Beladon is opening the world’s first floating dairy farm in the Netherlands.
Located in Rotterdam, the farm will house 40 cows in a high-tech facility on the water.
Minke van Wingerden, one of the project’s leaders, told Business Insider that the farm will produce an average of 211 gallons of milk each day.
Most of the cows’ food will come from city waste products, such as grains left over from local breweries and by-products from mills.
Beladon is also interested in launching floating chicken farms and floating vertical farming greenhouses.
A Dutch company is set to debut the world’s first floating dairy farm near Amsterdam.
A high-tech, multilevel facility will soon be floating in the water in Rotterdam, located roughly 50 miles outside of Amsterdam. Minke van Wingerden, a partner at the property development company Beladon, told Business Insider that the 89-by-89 foot farm will produce an average of 211 gallons of milk each day.
The facility will have 40 cows, which is fairly typical for a small dairy farm in the Netherlands.

Apple’s new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were finally released this past weekend after what seemed to some people like an impossibly long wait. Considering details surrounding the new XS and XS Max first started leaking before last year’s iPhone X was even released, it’s not exactly a surprise that the wait felt so long for Apple fans. The phones are now here though, and Apple fans seem to be quite happy with them overall. The iPhone XS marks what is undoubtedly the smallest year-over-year upgrade compared to the iPhone X from 2017, but “S” phones are typically designed for people who upgrade every two years or even every three or for years. For them, the iPhone XS and XS Max will be a complete reimagining of the iPhone experience. For people who do have an iPhone X from last year, all the iPhone XS really has to offer is a new gold color, a new option with a bigger display, and improved performance. The good news, however, is that the aforementioned performance improvements are massive.

A new report from the Washington Post found that emergency rooms have seen a spike in incidents involving electric scooters. One particular hospital in Salt Lake City reported a 161 percent increase in scooter injuries—from eight injuries over a four-month time span in 2017 to 21 in that same time period this year.
“Most of the patients with these injuries specifically reported that they were riding an e-scooter or a rental scooter,” Troy Madsen, a doctor at the University of Utah Health’s Emergency Department, told the Washington Post. “Interestingly, more than 80 percent of the injuries this year happened between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15, which would correspond with the increasing popularity and availability of the e-scooters.”
Madsen also reportedly pointed out that the individuals who came into the emergency department with injuries were between 20 and 50 years old and “often” hurt themselves trying to stop a fall. The Washington Post story included other injury-related details provided by hospitals:

Relocating is complicated enough when you’re simply moving to a new city. Scientists at NASA have taken property searches up an infinite number of levels, however, as they search for another Earth.
NASA’s planet-hunting team turned up a potential relocation candidate on the first pass with a new satellite. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) uses four wide-field, 16.8MP cameras designed and built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory to capture detailed images of stars and other objects in space. The goal is to identify previously unknown exoplanets for further study.
TESS recently began a two-year mission to scan the southern and northern skies. During the mission, TESS will study an unprecedented 85 percent of the sky — an expanse 350 times greater than NASA’s earlier Kepler mission.

Users can use Snapchat’s camera to scan a physical object or barcode, which brings up a card showing that item and similar ones along with their title, price, thumbnail image, average review score and Prime availability. When they tap on one, they’ll be sent to Amazon’s app or site to buy it. Snapchat determines if you’re scanning a song, QR Snapcode or object, and then Amazon’s machine vision tech recognizes logos, artwork, package covers or other unique identifying marks to find the product. It’s rolling out to a small percentage of U.S. users first before Snap considers other countries.

At an event in San Francisco, Google announced a number of changes to its search engine. The big takeaway is that Google search is getting a lot more visual, and that the company wants to bring relevant content to the forefront.
Google also isn’t shy about copying features that work for social networking platforms, such as Stories. Credit: Google
Discover
The most significant new feature is a new “Discover” news feed that will appear below the default Google search bar on mobile browsers. Like Facebook’s news feed, Discover will show “relevant” content, rather prioritizing chronological order. Content will appear based on your engagement and browsing history.
Discover will come with a slider that you can use to increase or decrease the amount of news you’re seeing. Bilingual users will be able to see Spanish items as well as those in English.

Download: Google Calendar 6.0 with new Google Material Theme redesign
At Google I/O, Google detailed the next step in their theming guidelines. The purpose of the Material Theme tools is to allow developers and companies to design their own user interfaces without being limited to design elements in the first iterations of Material Design. Google’s Material Theme design, for instance, is notably white and round all over. We’ve seen the Google Calculator, Google Photos, Google Chrome, Android Messages, Google Phone, and Google Contacts apps receive updates to the new Material Theme design by Google. Now, it’s Google Calendar’s turn. Google Calendar v6.0 is now rolling out on the Google Play Store, and we have the APK for you to download right now!

This year marks the start of the 7nm processor war. Interestingly, Huawei was the first one to announce a 7nm SoC, with its Kirin 980. It happened at the end of August, and it will power the upcoming Mate 20 series, to be unveiled on October 16. Interestingly, Apple was the second to announce its 7nm chip, the A12 Bionic, but it became the first commercially available. It powers the new iPhone Xs and Xs Max models. So far, in the 7nm SoC war, it’s Kirin 980 vs A12 Bionic for now. Qualcomm and others will eventually join, and the playfield will be level.

Take a walk down the shopping hub of downtown San Francisco, and it’s hard to miss Razer’s street-level storefront. People off the sidewalk are invited in to be dazzled by the spectacle of the live DJ’s thumping music and flashing lights. That’s certainly represents one aspect of Razer’s ethos.
But just a few blocks away is a non-descript, mid-level high-rise where the magic behind Razer’s designs are crafted. Secured doors conceal prototypes, sketches, and mockups for products that have yet to be launched — and like other tech companies in the Valley, employees treat the space as their own garage. Strip away the thumpa-thumpa music and the club-like decadence, and you’ll find the simpler aspect of Razer’s approaches design – methodical, purposeful, and devoid of unnecessary excesses. That was the space Razer invited us into to hear the story of how the Blade 15 came to be. It’s a gaming laptop that fully embodies that design philosophy both in terms of how it looks and how it performs.

As The Boring Company starts preparing for its growing list of tunneling projects, the startup has begun filling in a number of key positions that would enable it to bring Elon Musk’s vision of futuristic, high-speed tunnel systems into reality. Several key hires have already been filled by the company, and based on the job positions listed on its official website; the Boring Co. seems to be looking to expand its workforce even more.
The Boring Company’s apparent hiring efforts are considered a strategic choice for the startup, considering that it is currently involved in several initiatives that would require manpower. Back in June alone, The Boring Company won a high-profile contract to build an ultra high-speed tunnel system connecting downtown Chicago to O’Hare airport, beating out large contractors also bidding on the project. The initiative, which will utilize Elon Musk’s Loop System concept, is expected to begin as soon as permits and all the paperwork are completed.
Chicago is only one of the startup’s projects. The Boring Co. is also preparing for other initiatives, such as the 3.6-mile Dugout Loop in Los Angeles, which would help commuters travel to and from Dodgers Stadium. Permits for a tunnel system designed to enable travel between New York and Washington D.C. in less than 30 minutes have also been filed.
To aid the company in its series of projects, The Boring Co. has hired several key personnel, among them being Mike Wongkaew, who used to work for Mott MacDonald, which is part of the consortium that lost to the tunneling startup in the bid for the Chicago-O’Hare project. Wongkaew, who worked for Mott MacDonald as a principal engineer for structures and tunnel design manager, started his employment with the Boring Company last April as the startup’s chief tunnel engineer.

Apple and Salesforce have entered into a broad partnership that includes developing technology together and promoting each other’s products.
The alliance, announced Monday to coincide with Salesforce’s annual Dreamforce developer conference in San Francisco, pairs a consumer technology giant with a major force in online software for salespeople that is also dabbling in a number of other areas like word processing and business presentation software.
The partnership is intended to give Apple more access to corporate sales, an area it increasingly wants to expand into from its dominant position in consumer electronics. Salesforce, meanwhile, hopes to cater to the businesses that are big users of Apple’s products.
The two companies have previously worked together in a far more limited way, as a natural consequence of sharing certain business customers. But Apple vice president of product marketing Susan Prescott said the partnership formalized the relationship and opened the door to more collaboration starting with cross-promoting each others products to customers and encouraging their corporate re-sellers to do the same.

Indie app developer Moshen Chan has been an avid BMW enthusiast for ~20 years. Having a passion for high-speed driving, he has spent a lot of time experiencing the legacy automaker’s Ultimate Driving Machines firsthand. Moshen now drives a Tesla Model 3 Performance, after a test drive with the electric sedan proved that it was a powerful, feature-ridden, and compelling vehicle that could very well be beyond anything that the German veteran automaker currently has to offer.
The indie app developer shared his experience in a series of lengthy posts on a BMW forum, Bimmerfest.com. Chan notes that over the years, he has driven several BMWs, and today, he owns a modified E36 325i with track suspension setup, as well as an E82 135i with Performance Suspension and several other M3 suspension part upgrades. Being in the market for a new vehicle, he was looking at the BMW M2 Competition, the latest iteration of the BMW M3, and lastly, the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

More than five years after T-Mobile’s super-successful acquisition of MetroPCS, the carrier is overhauling its branding and market positioning to attract more customers.
MetroPCS, which had largely kept its separate identity after being acquired, focuses on the so-called prepaid segment of the wireless market, requiring customers to pay up-front every month and typically targeting people with weak or no credit histories and lower incomes. Since T-Mobile bought the unit, its subscriber base has more than doubled to 18 million as the brand spread from just 12 markets to about 100 nationwide currently.
Now T-Mobile (tmus) wants to make big changes. Starting in October, MetroPCS will be renamed “Metro by T-Mobile” and will add two higher-end unlimited data plans—at higher prices—in an effort to appeal to a broader customer audience. New advertising will emphasize that its service runs on the same wireless network as T-Mobile. And aligning itself with several other popular brands, both of Metro’s new unlimited plans will include at no additional cost cloud storage from Google’s Google One program and one plan will also include Amazon Prime, the e-commerce giant’s free delivery and video programming service.

We saw the same competitors a few months ago, but this time the outcome is different.
Here’s an awesome bit of drag racing (on a closed airfield of course) to help you usher in the weekend. Top Gear lined up three super German machines for a friendly contest of speed, starting with the BMW M5. Next up is the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, and rounding out the trio is a Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo. If the contestants seem familiar somehow, they should – Autocar did virtually the same race a couple months ago with one very notable difference. The Porsche in this lineup is the heavier Sport Turismo versus the sedan. And yes, that extra mass does make a difference.

Surface Hub 2’s light, sleek and intelligent design starts to ship in Q2 2019
Surface Hub 2 enables the power of collaborative work, allowing businesses to unlock the full potential of their greatest resource – people. As work changes – thanks to the ongoing digital revolution and a shift to non-traditional work spaces – fostering a team-based collaborative culture and spaces designed to enhance productivity and creativity are critical to businesses’ success. 48% of executives recognize the importance of collaboration and are modernizing their workplaces and systems to attract and retain the next generation of talent.
Surface Hub 2 represents the culmination of years of listening to our customers to better understand their needs. Often to better compete, these businesses must modernize their workplaces and systems to attract the best of the next generation.
People loved the original Surface Hub because it brought people together to work and create, but they also asked us for a more beautiful screen, something easier to install and transport, and more seamless integration of software and apps. We’ve taken that feedback to heart and used it to work across Microsoft to transform the creation process for Surface Hub 2 and our two new offerings in the Surface Hub family – Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 2X. Today we’re pumped to share more about these incredible collaboration devices.

With the launch of the original iPhone, the mobile/cellular phone industry was forever changed. The term ‘smartphone’ had now entered the cultural lexicon, ushering in a new age in which the human race’s collective knowledge was now available right from our pockets.
Of course, it wouldn’t be long before a worthy competitor would offer its own take on the smartphone operating system, and internet search giant Google was more than up to the task.
Originally envisioned as a company that would provide advanced operating systems for digital cameras, Android Inc. (founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White) would soon set its sights on the world of handsets, eventually convincing Google to acquire the company for $50 million in 2005.
Unlike Apple’s iPhone OS (which later re-branded as iOS), Android was an open-source platform powered by the Linux kernel, allowing manufacturers to develop their own mobile interfaces based on Android’s framework.
Over the course of a decade, Android would grow to become arguably the world’s most popular operating system, available across phones, tablets, televisions, cars, smartwatches and a variety of other smart devices.
Here are some of the key milestones in Android’s rise to global prominence over the last ten years.

Schmidt shared his thoughts at a private event in San Francisco on Wednesday night convened by investment firm Village Global VC. The firm enlists tech luminaries — including Schmidt, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Diane Green — as limited partners, then invests their money into early-stage tech ventures.
At the event, economist Tyler Cowen asked about the possibility of the internet fragmenting into different sub-internets with different regulations and limited access between them in coming years. “What’s the chance, say, 10 to 15 years, we have just three to four separate internets?”

Despite the ubiquity of drones nowadays, it seems to be generally accepted that learning how to control them properly is just too much work. Consumer drones are increasingly being stuffed full of obstacle-avoidance systems, based on the (likely accurate) assumption that most human pilots are to some degree incompetent. It’s not that humans are entirely to blame, because controlling a drone isn’t the most intuitive thing in the world, and to make it easier, roboticists have been coming up with all kinds of creative solutions. There’s body control, face control, and even brain control, all of which offer various combinations of convenience and capability.
The more capability you want in a drone control system, usually the less convenient it is, in that it requires more processing power or infrastructure or brain probes or whatever. Developing a system that’s both easy to use and self-contained is quite a challenge, but roboticists from the University of Pennsylvania, U.S. Army Research Laboratory, and New York University are up to it—with just a pair of lightweight gaze-tracking glasses and a small computing unit, a small drone will fly wherever you look.

The Galaxy Note 8 is still an absolute workhorse of a phone a year on from its release. You can get more done with the S Pen, and really the only limitations you’ll face will be battery life and internal storage. If you’ve used up the 64GB of base internal storage on the Note 8, you should invest in a quality microSD card and add up to 256GB of additional storage. The best part is the prices for microSD cards are getting better and better!

While Chrome 69, the latest version of Google’s popular web browser, brings some welcome changes, it also looks like it now signs you into the browser automatically when you sign in to Google websites and services, which then uploads your browsing history, as well as other information, to Google.
In previous versions of Chrome you could visit Gmail, YouTube or other Google websites and log into them without needing to be logged into the browser as well. While signing into your Google account in Chrome brings benefits, such as synchronizing your bookmarks and passwords, there are a number of privacy reasons why you’d want to keep that information stored locally on your PC, rather than share it with Google.
It also means if you’re using a shared computer to quickly browse the internet and check your emails in Gmail, you’ll want to make extra precautions to ensure that you are fully logged out when you’re finished.
This move is another step Google has taken in blurring the boundaries between its software and its services, and many people are understandably concerned.

Everything we know about what’ll likely be one of the year’s best phones.
Google first introduced its Pixel series in 2016, and since then, has been hard at work to establish itself as a serious player in the smartphone market. Google may be one of the most powerful and iconic companies in the world, but when it comes to hardware, is still very much a newcomer.
We saw vast improvements with the Pixel 2 compared to the original Pixel line, and we’re expecting to get that again with the Pixel 3. Google’s quickly learning what it takes to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, and seeing as how the Pixel 2 was one of 2017’s best phones, there’s a lot riding on this year’s entry.
Ladies and gentlemen, here’s everything we know so far about the Google Pixel 3.

There is no shortage of portable 360-degree cameras. The most well-known in our circles is Samsung’s Gear 360, but that only works with Samsung phones and iOS. Insta360’s ‘ONE‘ and ‘Nano‘ cameras are also popular, though the latter only works with select iPhone models.
If price is no object, one of the leading devices in this category has been Ricoh’s Theta V camera. It’s tiny, but it packs a 4K sensor and the ability to record surround-sound audio (with a separate module). The camera’s functionality can be extended by a variety of plug-ins, like one for streaming to YouTube or uploading media to Google Photos.
I think the Theta V is a great camera, and I have very few complaints with it. However, you’ll probably need a good reason to spend nearly $400 on one.

The New York Times has sued the Federal Communications Commission over the agency’s refusal to release records that the Times believes might shed light on Russian interference in the net neutrality repeal proceeding.
The Times made a Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) request in June 2017 for FCC server logs related to the system for accepting public comments on FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s repeal of net neutrality rules. The FCC refused to provide the records, telling the Times that doing so would jeopardize the privacy of commenters and the effectiveness of the agency’s IT security practices and that fulfilling the records request would be overly burdensome.
This led to a months-long process in which the Times repeatedly narrowed its public records request in order to overcome the FCC’s various objections. But the FCC still refuses to release any of the records requested by the Times, so the newspaper sued the commission yesterday in US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Sirius XM Holdings will acquire Pandora for $3.5 billion in an all-stock transaction, creating the world’s largest audio-entertainment company, the two sides announced Monday.
The deal, which includes a “go-shop” provision, will pay current Pandora shareholders 1.44 newly-issued SiriusXM shares for every share they own. The implied price of $10.14 a share is a 13.8% premium to Pandora’s 30-day volume-weighted average price.
“We have long respected Pandora and their team for their popular consumer offering that has attracted a massive audience, and have been impressed by Pandora’s strategic progress and stronger execution,” Sirius XM CEO Jim Meyer said in the release.

Before these cars were unveiled, many anticipated the likes of Mercedes and Audi would have perfected a “Tesla Killer” — depriving Elon Musk of even more sleep. Smartphones have been around for over a decade now. In fact, the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, debuted 10 years ago today. It’s not surprising that the category has seen some pretty horrible trends in that amount of time. We’ve compiled seven of the worst ones we could think of in this post, a couple of which are (unfortunately) still ongoing.
3D screens
When you think “3D phone,” your head probably goes straight to 2011’s HTC EVO 3D, and maybe the LG Optimus 3D that debuted shortly after. You might be surprised to learn that the first phone with any sort of 3D capabilities, the Japan-only Sharp mova SH251iS, actually came out back in 2002, though the EVO 3D was the first to be sold outside of Asia. Both the EVO 3D and Optimus 3D utilized parallax barrier tech, which meant that no 3D glasses were needed.
The EVO 3D.
At the time, both phones were actually pretty well-liked, with the 3D effect acting as a fun novelty, but the concept was quickly left in the dust. There have been a couple of others over the years, the vast majority of which you’ve almost certainly never heard of, with the only prominent one being the Amazon Fire Phone. This wildly unsuccessful phone from Bezos and friends didn’t use a 3D screen, instead using four front-facing cameras to track the user’s face to create a 3D-looking UI, dubbed “Dynamic Perspective.” I personally own one of these gems, having purchased it for the princely sum of $25 about a year and a half after it was released. It’s a nice piece of history, but not much more.

Discovered by Lucas Leong of the Trend Micro Security Research team, the zero-day vulnerability resides in Microsoft Jet Database Engine that could allow an attacker to remotely execute malicious code on any vulnerable Windows computer.
The Microsoft JET Database Engine, or simply JET (Joint Engine Technology), is a database engine integrated within several Microsoft products, including Microsoft Access and Visual Basic.

Four years ago a viral campaign wooed the world with a promise of fighting climate change and jump-starting the economy by replacing tarmac on the world’s roads with solar panels. The bold idea has undergone some road testing since then. The first results from preliminary studies have recently come out, and they’re a bit underwhelming.
A solar panel lying under a road is at a number of disadvantages. As it’s not at the optimum tilt angle, it’s going to produce less power and it’s going to be more prone to shading, which is a problem as shade over just 5 percent of the surface of a panel can reduce power generation by 50 percent.
The panels are also likely to be covered by dirt and dust, and would need far thicker glass than conventional panels to withstand the weight of traffic, which will further limit the light they absorb.
Unable to benefit from air circulation, its inevitable these panels will heat up more than a rooftop solar panel too. For every 1°C over optimum temperature you lose 0.5 percent of energy efficiency.
As a result a significant drop in performance for a solar road, compared to rooftop solar panels, has to be expected. The question is by how much and what is the economic cost?

During a recent presentation here at Hyundai Motor Group’s Namyang R&D Center in South Korea, Kia Executive VP Albert Biermann — formerly Chief Engineer for BMW’s M division — explained that the new driving philosophy of the Kia brand is a pursuit of “fun-to-drive” cars.
This hasn’t always been the case. Biermann himself used the phrase “almost fun to drive” to describe the brand’s history, but pointed to the newest generation of Kia’s portfolio — specifically than the 2018 Kia Stinger GT — as proof that the automaker is quickly distancing itself from what he describes as “the old Kia.”

Google’s recently revamped Gmail website has a lot of good things going for it — but the service’s interface could still use some serious improvement.
Plain and simple, the Gmail desktop site is busy and cluttered, particularly if you’ve spent any time working with its far more minimal and aesthetically pleasing Inbox cousin. So now that Inbox is on the way out, what’s a discerning email user to do?
Fear not, my friends, for there is hope yet. Just as you can recreate Inbox’s best features in Gmail — and make the Gmail Android app a touch more pleasant to use — with a teensy bit of effort, you can pare down Gmail’s desktop interface and transform it into a calm and uncluttered center for email productivity.
Pictures are worth at least 997 words in situations like these, so let me begin by showing you what my own Gmail inbox looks like right now, in the days since I moved back into it from Inbox and set out to make the transition tolerable:

The fierce bidding battle over Sky has come to a close — Comcast has successfully outbid 21st Century Fox to acquire the UK media giant for $39 billion. Hackers have stolen a whopping $60 million (6.7 billion yen) worth of cryptocurrency from Zaif, the 35th largest cryptocurrency exchange dealing in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Monacoin. The exchange is owned by Tech Bureau, Corp. based in Nishi-Ku, Osaka, Japan.
The hack attack took place on September 14th after hackers gained access to exchange’s “hot wallets” and transferred stolen funds to their own wallets. What’s worse is that Tech Bureau wasn’t aware of the breach until Monday, September 17th allowing hackers to cover their tracks without flipping off.
One of the tweets from Zaif exchange suggests that the exchange discovered the hack during an investigation related to server failure and urged users not to deposit or withdraw funds from their wallets.

According to Phandroid (This article and its images were originally posted on Phandroid September 19, 2018 at 01:13PM.)
There’s a lot of hype around the new Apple iPhone XS and it’s “improved imaging sensor” which captures more light and delivers better images. While Apple’s smartphones have often been regarded as having the best smartphone cameras on the market, things started shifting a few years ago. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 was introduced, it gave Apple’s latest iPhone a run for its money and since then, Huawei, Google and HTC have all delivered cameras which capture better photos than what Apple’s iPhones have been able to manage.
Since the new iPhone XS imaging sensor has been updated to match the 1.4μm Pixel size that most high-end Android phones have been using for the past two years, many were expecting its camera to match or beat the Pixel 2. Unfortunately for Apple, that doesn’t seem to be the case. We have not tested the camera of the iPhone Xs yet, but The Verge has shared a handful of side-by-side shots taken with both phones. The results show that the iPhone Xs has a better camera than last year’s iPhone X, but it still can’t beat the Pixel 2. The images from the iPhone XS are flatter which are better suited for those looking to edit the images after the fact, but the shots taken with the Pixel 2 seem perfectly tuned by Google’s software to be shared immediately with no extra fuss.

Amazon’s surprise event Thursday brought us over a dozen new products from the online retailer. But that wasn’t all. We also got new Alexa updates that anyone with an Alexa-enabled device can use.
Security was a big focus with new features that can keep your home safe. Here’s a look at the new ways you can secure your home with help from Alexa.
Alexa Guard
One of the biggest security-focused features coming to Amazon’s devices is Alexa Guard. Using your Echo devices, Alexa listens for noises that indicate danger, like a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm going off or the sound of breaking glass.
If Alexa detects something suspicious, you’ll receive an alert on your mobile phone with audio clips of the sound.
Alexa Guard also integrates with Ring and ADT services, so you’ll have the option to forward the alert to your monitored security provider’s dispatch center. You can enable Alexa Guard mode by saying phrases like, “Alexa, I’m leaving.”

The southwestern Florida town of Babcock Ranch bills itself as the nation’s first solar-powered town. Now, it can add another big high-tech notch to its belt: The first city to test autonomously driving school shuttle buses.
This fall, the planned community has partnered with Transdev to launch a pilot program for self-driving shuttle buses that can transport up to 12 children at a time.
Like other autonomous shuttles that are popping up across the country, the EasyMile Easy10 Gen II is pod-like vehicle that runs on electricity. The yellow shuttle bus will follow a predetermined path, scooping up children from a designated pick-up area and dropping them off in front of the school. Though the goal is to eventually allow on-demand, door-to-door pickup through an app.

Using the upcoming, faster 5G wireless technology, a combined T-Mobile and Sprint could offer an alternative home Internet service to cable by 2024 in 68% of the territory of Comcast(cmcsa), the largest cable provider, and 64% of the area serviced by Charter Communications(chtr), the number two cable player, according to T-Mobile chief operating officer Mike Sievert. Nationwide, the service would cover 52% of all zip codes and could have nearly 10 million subscribers in 2024, he said.

The Mirage Solo is capable of six degrees of freedom tracking (6DoF), meaning Daydream accounts for your motion up, down, left, right, forwards, and backward. To take advantage of all that tracking, Google’s created new 6DoF controllers.

NextVR provides access to immersive sports and entertainment broadcasts for a number of virtual reality headsets, but it had a huge Oculus-shaped gap in its compatibility list. Now, the platform has finally rolled out support for the Oculus Rift and even for its standalone sibling, the Oculus Go. NextVR chief David Cole said the VR community has been asking for the feature for a long time, and the company is merely answering the call.

Update for iOS 12
With iOS 12 and iPhones that have Touch ID, you can still bypass the iPhone lock screen and trick Siri into getting into a person’s phone. The bypass is the same as it was in earlier versions of the operating system:
Press the home button using a finger not associated with your fingerprint authentication, prompting Siri to wake up.
Say to Siri: Cellular data.
Siri then opens the cellular data settings where you can turn off cellular data.

Want to upgrade your Android experience? Try upgrading your launcher.
The way we arrange, organize, and interact with our apps on Android is called the launcher. Launchers usually consist of a series of home screens, where we can arrange app shortcuts and widgets and an app drawer. Every phone comes with a launcher, but when they drop the ball, there are endless third-party launchers that not only pick it up again but knock it clear out of the park.
Some variants of this article have tried to claim that there is one launcher to rule them all, that there truly is a best launcher out there. I don’t believe that’s possible, even though I have a launcher I value over all others. You use your phone differently than I do, and I use my phone differently than my co-workers do or my friends or my family do. Everyone has their perfect launcher, but if you haven’t found your favorite yet, then here are a few launchers we think will satisfy users of every type.
