How Razer forged the Blade 15, the slim gaming laptop nobody else could build

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Digital Trends September 24, 2018 at 06:24AM.)

Take a walk down the shopping hub of downtown San Francisco, and it’s hard to miss Razer’s street-level storefront. People off the sidewalk are invited in to be dazzled by the spectacle of the live DJ’s thumping music and flashing lights. That’s certainly represents one aspect of Razer’s ethos.

But just a few blocks away is a non-descript, mid-level high-rise where the magic behind Razer’s designs are crafted. Secured doors conceal prototypes, sketches, and mockups for products that have yet to be launched — and like other tech companies in the Valley, employees treat the space as their own garage. Strip away the thumpa-thumpa music and the club-like decadence, and you’ll find the simpler aspect of Razer’s approaches design – methodical, purposeful, and devoid of unnecessary excesses. That was the space Razer invited us into to hear the story of how the Blade 15 came to be. It’s a gaming laptop that fully embodies that design philosophy both in terms of how it looks and how it performs.

Razer is expected to unveil its second phone on October 10th

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Engadget September 14, 2018 at 07:24PM.)

Razer sent out invitations today for an October 10th event where it’s expected to unveil its Razer Phone 2. The invite doesn’t say as much, but the company noted in a financial report last month that it was working on a follow up to its Razer Phone and some reported images of the new phone leaked earlier this week. If it is launching its latest gaming-geared smartphone, it’s doing so just one day after Google reveals its newest Pixel phones and a day before Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy event. That’s a lot of phones in one week. But don’t forget, there’s also a Microsoft Surface event, a Huawei launch and likely a OnePlus debut in October as well. Hope you’re ready for a lot of new gadgets.

Razer announces a cheaper external GPU enclosure and support for macOS

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to The Verge

Razer is updating its Core line of external GPU enclosures today, introducing a new Core X model and adding support for Apple’s MacBook Pro laptops with Thunderbolt 3 ports.

The Core X is designed as a new, entry level model for Razer’s external GPU line, costing just $299 (as opposed to the Core V2’s $499 price tag), although it loses out on some of the Core V2’s more advanced features like USB and Ethernet ports and Razer’s Chroma lighting. That said, the Core X does offer some improvements over the Core V2, with 100W pass-through charging over Thunderbolt, an integrated 650W power supply (versus the V2’s 500W), and support for larger 3-slot GPUs (compared to the 2.2-GPU size on the V2.)

The Core X (and the Core V2) also works with Apple’s macOS laptops, in addition to the previously offered Windows 10 support, although Razer says that you’ll need to be running High Sierra 10.13.4 or higher and be using a Mac-compatible AMD Radeon card. It’s worth noting that Nvidia does make official drivers for many of its cards for Macs which might work even without OS-level support like AMD, but your mileage may vary and Razer — at least on paper — only recommends AMD GPUs for Mac use with its enclosures.

The Core X is available today from Razer’s website for $299, although like the Core and Core V2 before it, you’ll need to supply your own graphics card.

Razer Wants To Turn Its Gaming Phone Into A Laptop

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Kotaku

The Razer Phone is a very powerful piece of Android hardware. The Project Linda concept, revealed today at CES 2018, is a dock for the Razer Phone that turns it into a 13.3 inch Android gaming laptop. Why not?

It’s essentially a Razer Blade laptop, only instead of PC internals it’s powered by a Razer Phone inserted in the base of the unit below the keyboard. Once plugged in, the phone’s display transfers to the laptop’s 4K 120 Mhz touchscreen display, with the smaller screen acting as either a touchpad or a secondary display. The dock features its own internal battery, as well as an additional 200 GB of storage.

It’s a very neat concept. Having spent many trade shows with my laptop tethered to my my phone’s cellular connection due to shoddy Wi-Fi, I can certainly see the appeal.

Project Linda is only in the conceptual stage at the moment, something for Razer to show off at CES 2018 in hopes of scoring another Best Of award. But it’s a concept that makes a lot of sense, not just for the Razer Phone, but for all sorts of mobile phones. Hit up the project’s official web page for more information.

Razer launches water-resistant Cynosa Chroma and Cynosa Chroma Pro keyboards

Starting at $60, Razer states that the “Cynosa is the most full-featured entry-level keyboard for gamers” available.

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to KitGuru

Last month, SteelSeries unveiled its splash-proof Apex 150 keyboard, built to protect the electronic internals from water damage. Razer isn’t too far behind, launching its new water resistant Cynosa Chroma and Cynosa Chroma Pro starting at $60.

Just like the SteelSeries Apex 150, Razer has opted to use membrane switches with its Cynosa Chroma and Cynosa Chroma Pro, instead of the now oversaturated mechanical market, however the company states that its own “soft cushioned” keys are actually better than other rubber dome peripherals.

Razer claims that this is possible through custom tuning responsiveness and actuation distance, and while it is not impossible for a membrane keyboard to rival the performance of that shown by a mechanical variant, it’s best to wait until reviewers get a hands on to put that to the test.

Review: Razer Ornata Chroma Keyboard

MECHA-MEMBRANE

In the year 2016, mechanical keyboards and membrane keyboards are currently embroiled in an ongoing war. Those in love with the former contend that having actual mechanical switches under their buttons gives typing and gaming a higher amount of precision, and that once you feel that tactile ka-chunk it’s hard to go back to stock keyboards. Supporters of the latter say there’s no need to spend the extra money, and that PC hardware companies are just trying to milk gamers for their cash.

With Razer’s Ornata Chroma keyboard, a new challenger has entered the fray, hoping to unite people who think way too damn much about keyboards, like I do.

Razer Ornata Chroma Keyboard
Manufacturer: Razer
Input: USB 2.0
MSRP: $99.99

The Ornata Chroma uses a technology called mecha-membrane (actually not Godzilla’s arch-nemesis, in case you’re wondering). There’s a membrane under the keys that allows for longer life duration and low-profile typing, but there are still mechanical parts that give that chunky click that feels so good. Which could all be a buncha bullcrap that doesn’t end up pleasing everyone, of course.

But from my time with this keyboard, I find it to be a satisfying compromise. It has mid-sized keys between the shape of bulky keyboards and Mac chiclets that feel like you don’t have to press down quite as far. There’s still a textured clack to each press, providing feedback and letting you know that you did indeed press the key in time, and that you died because that other dude is just better at sniping than you are. Especially appreciated is the included detachable cushioned wrist rest that prevents fatigue. I use it for both gaming and typing, and I’ve found this to be the most comfortable keyboard I’ve used since I began reviewing hardware. The magnets that hold the rest to the keyboard are bit weak, but that only matters if you’re particularly violent with your keypresses.

There aren’t dedicated media keys, so the function key is necessary for that as well as changing backlight brightness, turning on game mode (to prevent accidentally hitting the Windows key), and the like. This is a smaller keyboard, so it’s nice and compact for both gaming and typing.

It’s also attractive: clean, crisp lines and angles mean that it doesn’t have the garish Transformer look that is strongly associated with PC hardware. Razer’s Chroma technology allows for 16.8 million color combinations through the included Synapse program, which also can be used to create macros or see the heat map of your keyboard use. I generally have it on a setting where waves of color ripple out from the keys I press, which is probably annoying as hell to passers-by, but I’m just happy it looks like I’m weaving purple lightmagic.

There aren’t a ton of extra features here, like USB pass-throughs and media keys, but it doesn’t feel lacking. It’s too satisfying to use. Though I’m generally an ardent supporter of Cherry Blue mechanical switches, this mecha-membrane combination is my favorite keyboard to use right now due to its low-profile keys and enticing clicks. This is all largely subjective, so if possible, I’d go to a store and try to test one out to see if you like it first. I was expecting a mushiness to it that simply isn’t there, but your mileage my vary. If you’re uninterested in the pretty colors, there’s a $20 cheaper version that functions identically minus the RGB lights. Either way, it’s a solid outing by Razer, and my wrists thank the company.

Razer unveils Project Ariana, a 4K projector that blurs the line between your screen and living room

Razer’s crazy new triple-display laptop might take center stage this year, but the company also trotted out a more realistic concept during CES, too—a 4K projector. Yes, Razer is making a projector.

Okay, not just a projector. In fact, Project Ariana is suspiciously similar to Microsoft’s maybe-abandoned IllumiRoom concept from a few years back. IllumiRoom used the Kinect’s depth-sensing capabilities to map the area around your TV, and then took that data and “extended” your screen out into the room itself. Here’s a demo from 2013:

IllumiRoom could also enhance games in subtler ways. The famous example was snow falling around the edges of the room while racing on a snowy track, and thus adding a bit more atmosphere to the room you were in.

Project Ariana does the same, albeit without the all-in-one convenience of the Kinect. Instead Razer uses a pair of 3D depth-sensing cameras—perhaps similar to the RealSense cameras used in its Stargazer webcam—to map out a room and any furniture in it.

Project ArianaRazer

Ariana can then project a variety of information, depending on what game developers choose to implement. Razer tossed a few examples at me during our discussion: elements of the game’s interface (like a map of the area), countdown timers for skills, the extension of the screen’s edges onto the room’s walls (just like IllumiRoom).

Powering all of this is Razer’s Chroma lighting API, albeit a more advanced version than the one used to customize the company’s RGB peripherals (keyboards, headsets, mice, mousepads). Project Ariana is really a proof-of-concept for where Razer wants to go in the future.

“Video projection, multi-color lighting, and the responsive intelligence of our Razer Chroma engine are changing the way we game today,” said CEO Min-Liang Tan in a press release. “Project Ariana is a concept design that showcases the power and potential of the Razer Chroma platform in the pre-VR world in bridging the gap between gamers and games.”

Project ArianaRazer

That future includes third-parties, too—a licensing program was also announced at CES today. Razer stated in its press release that “a growing number of hardware partners are queued to leverage the Razer Chroma platform”—partners that include Lenovo, NZXT, Antec, Lian Li, Wicked Lasers, and Nanoleaf.

No hard announcements yet on what those third-party companies have planned, but it’s an important step. Until now, all of these lighting solutions—be it Logitech’s, Corsair’s, Razer’s, et al—have functioned primarily as first-party value-adds. Razer’s move might see the market increasingly divided by the APIs used to power decorative LED elements. Of all things.

Project ArianaRazer

For now, though, Chroma’s big plans involve just the projector. And even that might not make it out of the concept phase, given “Project” is the designation Razer tags on to all its in-flux ideas. However, I was told that Ariana is slated to launch by the end of 2017, should it get enough positive feedback.

That’s right: By this time next year, you could have a Razer-branded 4K projector in your home. Weird.

Razer’s gaming laptop prototype has three huge fold-out screens

Is a laptop three times as good if it’s got three times the screens? That’s what Razer may be hoping with Project Valerie, a prototype multi-monitor gaming laptop that it’s announcing at CES. From certain angles, Valerie looks a lot like the sleek Razer Blade Pro, which was announced in the fall of 2016. Instead of one 17.3-inch 4K IGZO display, though, Valerie has a stack of screens that slide into a three-display setup under their own power. The result may not be the most practical gaming PC you’ll see this year, but it’s probably one of the most unusual.

Multiple displays are a significant perk of desktop computers, letting people multitask or play games with a super-wide field of view. The Blade Pro, with its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card and mechanical keyboard, is effectively a desktop PC replacement. But if you want more than one screen, you still have to rely on external peripherals. Project Valerie changes that, at the cost of some added weight and thickness. Where the Blade Pro is 7.8 pounds and 0.88 inches thick, Valerie weighs around 12 pounds and is 1.5 inches thick. Both laptops are VR-ready, exceeding the recommended specs of the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

While Project Valerie has the same graphics card and keyboard as the Pro, we don’t know the exact specs, since it’s a concept design. In addition to a backlit keyboard, it has lighting strips under the two side monitors, which project an ambient glow onto the surface beneath them. Its extra screens will take a toll on the battery life, which is already only around four hours on the Blade Pro, but Razer doesn’t say exactly how long it lasts. (Hypothetically, you could save power by leaving the extra screens folded and off, although that somewhat defeats the purpose.)

Razer isn’t the first company to hit on this idea. Mashable noted a dual-screen laptop trend in 2009, and similar designs have cropped up in the years since, including an aftermarket product called Slidenjoy, which is supposed to start shipping this month. The fact that they’ve never really caught on may be a good indicator of how Project Valerie will end up — or maybe people have just been waiting for the right one to come along.

Razer Blade Pro Gaming Laptop: It’s a Portable Supercomputer That Vapes | ESIST

Video via R Λ Z Ξ R

Sweet Vape

Vapor-chamber cooling in a laptop isn’t unique: Razer is calling it the world’s thinnest such system rather than the first. Last year’s G752 gaming laptop from Asus had a similar system, but that laptop was nowhere near this svelte. And a vapor-based system also doesn’t mean you’ll see vapor wafting out of the back of the laptop: The vapor chamber is an enclosed system in which coolant fluid inside reaches a boiling point, then vaporizes. All of that action moves heat away from the components and into the laptop’s exhaust system.

A pair of internal fans help route heat out of the back of the laptop and away from places like the wrist rest. There’s a third fan on the underside of the motherboard that doesn’t feed hot air into the vent system; it’s just there to keep things circulating and eliminate wrist-singing hot spots.

While the Razer Blade Pro is crazy-thin, it certainly isn’t a featherweight laptop. It clocks in at nearly 8 pounds, but it’s powerful enough to be VR-ready for both the Oculus and HTC Vive. Razer says that’s important, as VR game developers are looking for a single portable powerhouse they can develop and play games on. The company also hopes the laptop appeals to more than gamers, as it has the horsepower and screen resolution to appeal to hard-core video and photo editors.

This kind of power doesn’t come cheap. The Razer Blade Pro starts at $3,700, and that’s for the piddly 512GB SSD configuration. Ramping up to 1TB will run you $4,000, and the top-of-the-line 2TB model sets you back $4,500. Other than the storage space, all those other bad-ass components are the same, and they’ll all be available in November.

Razer Brings Ultra Low Profile Mechanical Key Action To Apple’s iPad Pro

by Paul Lilly

Razer has gone and built itself a new mechanical key switch, but you won’t find it implemented in any gaming keyboards for the PC, at least not right off the bat. Instead, Razer’s new “Ultra-Low-Profile Mechancial Switch” will initially be outfitted into a keyboard case for Apple’s iPad Pro tablet. Who would’ve guessed, right?

“We’re commonly thought of as a company that makes phenomenal products for gamers, but to design the very best products, we’ve had to innovate from the ground up – even from each individual component such as mechanical switches,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We’re excited about the potential of our Ultra-Low-Profile Mechanical Switch and look forward to exploring other applications in addition to the mechanical keyboard we’ve designed for the iPad Pro.”

Razer’s open source HDK 2 is a $399 VR headset that’s not just for devs

There’s a new Razer OSVR headset at E3 2016 and it’s not just for developers and hackers. OK, OK, it’s called the Hacker Dev Kit 2 but bear with us.

The new headgear from Razer and Sensics’ VR platform hopes to rival the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with a 2160 x 1200 dual OLED display and a very tempting $399 price. That’s the price of the upcoming PlayStation VR headset and much lower than the Rift ($599) and Vive ($799).

The upgraded headset will ship in July as Oculus and HTC continue to fight over exclusives. The HDK 2’s display has a respectable 90 Hz refresh rate, a 110 degree field of view and Razer is also promising that its ‘Image Quality Enhancer’ tech will reduce the screen door effect. There’s also individual eye focal tuning to get the clearest picture, though no glasses allowed.

What’s also promising, as well as the potential picture, is the talk of an IR camera and IR tracking technology on the faceplate of the headset to allow for positional tracking in an 8 x 9 feet area.

Previously, the first OSVR dev kit listed Leap Motion as a partner for gesture tracking. This time round at E3, Razer’s booth will show off the Gloveone motion tracking gloves from Neurodigital.

As ever, the question is what will you be able to do on a Hacker Dev Kit? It’s showing off a couple of new apps and games, none of which are very big or flashy: racing game RedOut by 34Big Things, self-explanatory Theme Park Studio by Pantera Entertainment, first person horror game The Hum: Abductions from Totwise Studios, the episodic Infinite by Project Gateway and sci-fi gallery shooter A-19 by Futuretown.

“The HDK 2 allows us to meet the needs of VR fans and gamers and provide developers with affordable open-source hardware to innovate with,” said Christopher Mitchell, OSVR lead at Razer. “With the HDK 2 being able to deliver a visual experience on par with industry leaders, we will now be able to represent hardware agnostic VR media and games in all their glory for future headsets to adopt through the open source ecosystem.
