Picture a bulky, wired-up ultrasound machine, condensed to the size of an electric razor that can plug in to your phone, and fit into your pocket.

And better yet, it costs only $2,000.

The ultrasound-on-chip is the invention of Butterfly Network, founded by Jonathan Rothberg, who also had a hand in creating Next Generation DNA-sequencing, which made the then-exclusive DNA sequencing technology a standard part of most medical practices and clinics.

The new device, named Butterfly iQ, was inspired by Rothberg’s own personal experiences. His daughter was born with a disease called tubular sclerosis, which creates tiny tumors all over the body. The treatment procedure for this requires the use of a high-frequency ultrasound and MRI-imaging.

Indie app developer Moshen Chan has been an avid BMW enthusiast for ~20 years. Having a passion for high-speed driving, he has spent a lot of time experiencing the legacy automaker’s Ultimate Driving Machines firsthand. Moshen now drives a Tesla Model 3 Performance, after a test drive with the electric sedan proved that it was a powerful, feature-ridden, and compelling vehicle that could very well be beyond anything that the German veteran automaker currently has to offer.

The indie app developer shared his experience in a series of lengthy posts on a BMW forum, Bimmerfest.com. Chan notes that over the years, he has driven several BMWs, and today, he owns a modified E36 325i with track suspension setup, as well as an E82 135i with Performance Suspension and several other M3 suspension part upgrades. Being in the market for a new vehicle, he was looking at the BMW M2 Competition, the latest iteration of the BMW M3, and lastly, the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Tim Cook on iPhone Prices: ‘We Want to Serve Everyone’

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on MacRumors September 13, 2018 at 08:54AM.)

At an event in Cupertino yesterday, Apple announced three new iPhone models: the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. Prices for the iPhones start at $749 for the iPhone XR in 64GB, and increase to as much as $1,449 for the iPhone XS Max in 512GB, which represents Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date.

Commenting on this price range in an interview with Nikkei today, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We want to serve everyone.” Apple introduced the iPhone XR at a cheaper price point so that customers who wanted the advantages of the iPhone X line — Face ID, an edge-to-edge screen — could find them on a lower-cost iPhone.

iPhone XS: Ten S, Excess or Xtra Small? Welcome to iPhone’s 2018 naming problem – CNET

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on CNET September 2, 2018 at 07:47AM.)

When Apple announced the iPhone X last September, it painted itself into a corner. With two “8s” (the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus) and a “ten”, the iPhone 9 was passed over, and a whole new Roman numbering system was on the table. Now, with three rumored new 2018 iPhones on deck for its big September 12 unveiling — said to be three different screen sizes, but all using the iPhone X-style Face ID — how will Apple designate and delineate the trio of models?

Here are some possibilities.

Go for the ‘S’

Last year, Apple broke its own iPhone/iPhone S cycle, where iPhones in every even year sees a major upgrade — often accompanied by a physical redesign — while odd years get internal updates with the suffix “S.” The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus “should” have been the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, but Apple jumped a whole number. And with its radical redesign, the iPhone X — pronounced “iPhone Ten” — leaped two more numbers up the scale, leapfrogging 9 altogether.

Rumor has it that this year Apple returns to the S update. The iPhone X successor could actually be three phones, including a 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED-screen iPhone, both of which are called iPhone XS. That’s according to 9to5Mac, which claims exclusive images and intel. A third iPhone, said to have 6.1-inch LCD screen, would be the most affordable of the three, but that wasn’t shown or named by 9to5mac.

You can get 200GB of free iCloud storage for 2 months, just in time to upgrade your iPhone

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on BGR August 27, 2018 at 07:48AM.)

In a matter of weeks, Apple will unveil its 2018 generations of iPhones, and many iPhone users will soon upgrade their old devices to a brand new model. As always with upgrades, it’s recommended you back up your data before moving to a brand new iPhone, in order not to lose any precious information.

That’s why you should check out Apple’s brand new promotion. The iPhone maker partnered up with US carriers to offer two months of 200GB iCloud storage for free to new users.

The deal spotted on Apple by a Reddit user, is available on all US carriers. International iPhone owners, sadly won’t get the perk.

With 200GB of iCloud storage, you should be able to upgrade most iPhones before making the jump to a brand new device. Current models go up to 256GB of storage, but even those versions can be backed up on 200GB iCloud storage, as long as you’re using less than 200GB of data on your phone.

Even if you don’t plan on getting a new iOS smartphone or tablet, the free cloud storage deal might be an interesting one, especially if you were looking to upgrade your free iCloud plan. The 200GB tier costs $2.99 per month, so you’re saving $6 in this case.

The deal, however, is only valid for new iCloud purchases. So if you’re already paying for iCloud, then you won’t be able to take advantage of the promo.

However, the new iPhone models might go all the way up to 512GB of storage, just like the iPad Pros and the recently released Galaxy Note 9. More local storage means that short-term, you won’t have to worry about iCloud space. But backing up a 512GB device might be a daunting task going forward, and you’ll need to invest in more hard drives or extra iCloud storage down the road.

That said, the storage tiers for the next iPhone X versions hasn’t leaked, so there’s no guarantee 512GB will be an option.

Apple is likely to unveil the new iPhones on September 12th, with preorders starting two days later.

A Chinese electric car startup is trying to take on Tesla by making its cars more like an iPhone

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Business Insider (This article and its images were originally posted on Business Insider July 9, 2018 at 09:15AM.)

  • The Chinese electric vehicle startup Byton is developing three vehicles, the first of which will hit the market in 2019.
  • The company has prioritized interior features, like touchscreens and adjustable seats, over traditional performance metrics, like range and acceleration, in part because it assumes autonomous driving technology will become available to consumers in the next few years.
  • Byton president and co-founder Daniel Kirchert told Business Insider that Byton will sell a car with Level 4 autonomy — which means the car can handle all driving functions in certain scenarios — by the end of 2020.

When automakers promote electric cars, they tend to highlight two performance metrics — range and acceleration — in an effort to disprove the stereotype that electric vehicles are less powerful and more inconvenient to own than their gas-powered counterparts.

But for the Chinese electric vehicle startup Byton, performance metrics are secondary to interior features like cabin space, touchscreens, and adjustable seats, and their ability to make a ride more comfortable, Byton president and co-founder Daniel Kirchert told Business Insider.

Fast acceleration is “not meaningful for most consumers,” he said. “The area that we want to be number one is in terms of spending quality time in the car on the move, being able to do all of the things you would like to do in a very comfortable way.”

Byton thinks of electric cars as smart devices

byton k-byte

Byton, which was founded in 2016 as Future Mobility Corporation, has released concepts for two vehicles — the M-Byte SUV and K-Byte sedan — and plans to build a third, a seven-seat MPV. Kirchert said the company will release the M-Byte in 2019, the K-Byte in 2021, and the MPV in 2022. The M-Byte and K-Byte’s high-end trims will have 325 miles of range, while their entry-level models will have 250 miles of range.

Byton’s philosophy is to think of an electric vehicle as a “smart device,” Kirchert said, an idea that’s evident in the M-Byte and K-Byte concepts. In place of a traditional dashboard, the M-Byte concept — which Kirchert said represents around 80% of the production version — has a 49-inch touchscreen, as well as touchscreens on the steering wheel and the backs of the front seats. The M-Byte also has individually-adjustable seats, gesture control features, and onboard Wi-Fi. While Byton hasn’t released interior renderings for the K-Byte concept, Kirchert said its interior “will follow the logic” of the M-Byte’s.

“The driver should not be tempted being in the car to take out his smartphone again,” he said.

Level 4 autonomy is coming in 2020

byton suv

The company’s emphasis on interior comfort over performance derives, in part, from its assumption that autonomous driving technology will become available to consumers in the next few years. Kirchert said Byton will sell vehicles with Level 4 autonomy — which means the car can handle all driving functions in certain scenarios — by the end of 2020. That’s an ambitious timeline for a startup, as more experienced autonomous driving companies like Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise plan on introducing Level 4 ride-hailing services this year and next, respectively.

Level 4 autonomy could be more difficult to integrate into consumer vehicles, which will require the technology to function in a variety of locations, than for ride-hailing services, which can restrict autonomous vehicles to a single city. Byton has enlisted Aurora, an autonomous driving startup that is also working with Volkswagen and Hyundai, to help develop self-driving technology for its vehicles.

Byton wants to combine the auto industry and Silicon Valley

byton concept suv

But, in the coming years, autonomy will be a secondary challenge for Byton, behind turning its concepts into cars it can make and sell without running out of money. In June, the company closed a $500 million Series B funding round, bringing the company’s total raised capital to over $1 billion. But there’s been no shortage of well-funded electric vehicle startups that have introduced flashy concepts which never reached production. Kirchert said Byton has a few advantages that will help it avoid financial insolvency.

The company will use the same platform for each of its three upcoming vehicles to simplify the production process and make it easier to scale. And the company hopes to create a culture that mixes the manufacturing competence of major automakers with the tech industry’s innovative thinking. To do so, the company has built an executive team with experience at established auto companies like BMW and Ford and located its North American headquarters in Silicon Valley.

“We are not a traditional OEM, neither are we a pure internet company. We’re creating something completely new. We’re integrating these two worlds,” Kirchert said.

Leak Reveals Apple Is Eyeing Foldable iPhones in the Coming Years

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Inverse (This article and its images were originally posted on Inverse July 6, 2018 at 01:16PM.)

Big changes are coming to the iPhone range. A new report on Thursday claimed Apple is planning to release iPhones with enhanced features, as a stepping stone to foldable iPhones “which will come several years later.”

The industry source, speaking to Korea Times, claims Apple may soon use LG Display as a second supplier of OLED screens in a multi-million dollar deal, the advanced technology used in the iPhone X that enables a broader contrast range and truly deep blacks. The company is rumored to launch three new devices later this year, but the source also claimed that Apple is seeking to release a foldable phone further down the line.

This corroborates with a report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Wamsi Mohan, who claimed in March the company is working with Asian suppliers to release such a device by 2020.

Apple’s 6.1″ iPhone 2018 fleshed out in a new render with a large single camera

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to PhoneArena – News (This article and its images were originally posted on PhoneArena – News June 25, 2018 at 06:19AM.)

After a CAD-based render, a dummy, and a screen protector set, it’s time for a case-maker render of Apple‘s upcoming 6.1″ iPhone with an LCD display. This one will sit at the bottom of the 2018 totem pole when it is released, expected to be priced in line with the current iPhone 8 at launch. This particular case maker has leaked many a design in the past, and they have turned out to be accurate, so we keep our hopes high that this is what Apple will release with eventual delay.

What you see at the front is indeed a notch, and it looks a bit wider than the one on the iPhone X, plus the bezels look slightly thicker. Given the reported issues with adjusting the TrueDepth camera kit on an LCD display, it’s not completely out of the question that the 6.1″ iPhone 2018 may sport slightly cruder front than its more refined (and more expensive) OLED brethren, the iPhone X 2018, and the alleged 6.4″ X Plus.

Looking around at the back, we find a single camera, just as reported previously, but what seems to be a larger lens than what we have now on the iPhone 8, so there might be a brand new sensor and optics in there. A glass rear to facilitate wireless charging rounds up the rendered design suggestions, while a TouchID scanner is nowhere to be seen, reconfirming that Apple will be all Face ID and Memoji from now on. The dimensions of this new iPhone are expected to be 5.79 x 2.81″ (147.12 x 71.52 mm), which makes it slightly taller and wider than the iPhone X, in line with the move from a 5.8″ to a 6.1″ panel.

Apple's 6.1" iPhone 2018 fleshed out in a new render with a large single camera
If Apple indeed manages to pull off an improved single camera over the iPhone 8, the 2018 iPhone, with its larger display and true Memoji power, is shaping up to be a desirable upgrade, and maybe that’s why analysts are predicting a super-cycle for Apple this year, again.

Apple Confirms Plans to Disable Law Enforcement Access to iPhone via Tools Like GrayKey Box

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors (This article and its images were originally posted on MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors June 13, 2018 at 06:11PM.)

Apple has confirmed that it is closing a technological loophole that allows law enforcement officials to hack into iPhones through USB-based hardware solutions like the GrayKey box, reports The New York Times.

Apple said it was planning an iPhone software update that would effectively disable the phone’s charging and data port — the opening where users plug in headphones, power cables and adapters — an hour after the phone is locked. In order to transfer data to or from the iPhone using the port, a person would first need to enter the phone’s password.

As we shared last week, the feature that prevents USB accessories from connecting to an iPhone or iPad if it’s been more than an hour since the device was last unlocked is included in iOS 12. This setting is enabled by default and it will not allow USB-based accessories like the GrayKey box to connect to an iOS device until a passcode is entered. Charging, however, is still possible as it does not require a data connection.

Apple’s new setting effectively disables the techniques that law enforcement officials have been using to access locked iPhones over the past couple of years. A current popular iPhone unlocking option, for example, is the GrayKey box, which has been sold to hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the United States.

The GrayKey box is designed to plug into the Lightning port of an iPhone where it uses a data connection to brute force a passcode in as little as a few hours. With the change, the GrayKey box will not work on an iPhone unless it has been less than an hour since the device was last unlocked. The short time period available for access via USB essentially renders the GrayKey box useless.

Located under Touch ID & Passcode, the USB access setting can be disabled, but most users will have no reason to turn it off as there’s no real benefit to doing so. All iOS devices will have this setting turned on by default after upgrading to iOS 12, which means law enforcement officials will have a much more difficult time accessing devices running iOS 12 and beyond.

As The New York Times points out, law enforcement officials have become aware of the changes Apple is planning to implement in iOS 12 and they’re not happy. Chuck Cohen, who leads an Indiana State Police task force on internet crimes against children, told The New York Times that the Indiana State Police had unlocked 96 iPhones using the GrayKey box in 2017.

“If we go back to the situation where we again don’t have access, now we know directly all the evidence we’ve lost and all the kids we can’t put into a position of safety,” said Cohen.

iPhone unlocking devices like the GrayKey box, however, are often not only used by law enforcement officials and can be used by hackers and other nefarious individuals, making it crucial for Apple to patch the security flaw that allows the devices to work.

Apple is not aiming to thwart law enforcement efforts with its on-device security changes. The company regularly complies with requests for the data that it stores on its servers, and has a dedicated team of professionals to respond to these requests. Since 2013, Apple has responded to more than 55,000 U.S. government requests seeking information relating to over 208,000 devices, accounts, or financial identifiers.

Apple also has a team for responding to national security requests, and in 2017 alone, Apple received 29,250-29,748 National Security Requests from the U.S. government. Specific numbers are not available because of U.S. law.

An Apple spokesperson told MacRumors that Apple is always working on strengthening security protections and addressing iPhone vulnerabilities as quickly as possible to defend customers against hackers.

“At Apple, we put the customer at the center of everything we design. We’re constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data. We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don’t design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs.”

Apple blocked iPhone hacking via USB, so hackers found a way to beat it

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to BGR (This article and its images were originally posted on BGR June 15, 2018 at 06:50AM.)

Apple just confirmed that it’ll prevent iPhone hackers from bypassing encryption by brute-forcing passwords via machines designed expressly to obtain access to locked handsets. Machines like the GrayKey were featured prominently in reports this past year, hook up to an iPhone via Lightning, and then unlock the device by using all possible PIN combinations until the correct one is discovered.

iOS 12 already addresses the hack by turning the USB connection into a charging-only mode if the iPhone hasn’t been unlocked in more than an hour. But the final iOS 12 release is months away. And hackers say they found a way to deal with it.

As expected from Apple’s developer-focused showcase here at WWDC, here’s your first glimpse of iOS 12. Previewing what’s headed to your iPhone (and iPad) later this year, it might not look all that different. CEO Tim Cook teased that the customer at the center of everything — and perhaps nothing illustrates it better than its updated mobile OS. Craig Federighi noted that iOS 12 will be supported by all the same devices that iOS 11 ran on — it’s the biggest range of supported devices yet.

Samsung Ordered to Pay Apple $539 Million in iPhone Design Patent Retrial

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors

The latest Samsung v. Apple trial wrapped up this afternoon after the jury decided that Samsung must pay Apple a total of $539 million for violating Apple’s design patents with five android devices sold between 2010 and 2011, reports CNET.

A total of $533,316,606 was awarded to Apple for Samsung’s violation of three design patents, while the remaining $5,325,050 was for Samsung’s infringement on two of Apple’s utility patents.

Samsung and Apple were back in court to redetermined damages after Samsung appealed to the Supreme Court and said that the original damages award, which was set at $399 million after several appeals, was a “disproportionate” sum for the design violation.

The Supreme Court ordered the U.S. Court of Appeals to redetermine the damages amount, leading to today’s victory for Apple.

The core issue of the retrial was whether the damages should be based on the total value of the iPhone or if Samsung’s fee should be based on just the elements of the iPhone that it copied.

Apple argued that its payment should be based on the full value of the iPhone, while Samsung argued that it should pay a lesser amount. They’re seeking profits on the entire phone,” argued Samsung lawyer John Quinn. “Apple’s design patents do not cover the entire phone. They are entitled to profits only on [infringing] components, not the entire phone.”

Apple asked the jury to award $1 billion in damages, while Samsung asked jurors to limit the damages to $28 million. Unfortunately for Samsung, the jury sided with Apple, and the new award is more than Samsung would have had to pay had the retrial not happened.

In a statement, Apple had this to say: “It is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. We’re grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products.

Update: Samsung also gave a statement on the verdict: “Today’s decision flies in the face of a unanimous Supreme Court ruling in favor of Samsung on the scope of design patent damages. We will consider all options to obtain an outcome that does not hinder creativity.

What Causes an iPhone to Explode? Video Captures Incident in Las Vegas

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Inverse

A smartphone repairman was working at a desk when an iPhone at the opposite end of the table allegedly exploded without warning. The incident was captured on film inside of a Las Vegas phone repair shop on May 11. The employee of the unidentified store is seen quickly lunging away from the device after it bursts into flames and releases a plume of smoke.

According to ABC News affiliate KTNV, the device caught on camera was an iPhone 6 in the process of being repaired for screen cracking due to heat damage, which caused its lithium-ion battery to swell. This type of battery bulging is nothing new in Apple smartphones and has even been reported in models as early as the iPhone 5. While it’s unclear what the exact cause of this specific incident was, it begs the questions: What’s going under the hood that could make this happen? And is your phone in danger of catching fire?

iPhone’s weirdest glitch yet: Ask Siri to define “mother” twice, learn a bad word

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Ars Technica

On Saturday, iPhone users around the world began testing and confirming what is arguably Siri’s most bizarre response to a question yet. Before grabbing your own phone to test this out, however, be mindful of anybody else around.

The randy robo-response was apparently first reported on Reddit’s Apple community, where a user by the name “thatwasabaddecision” suggested that people ask Siri to “define the word mother,” wait for the assistant to ask for an additional definition, and say “yes.” What the Reddit user didn’t point out, which readers learned by doing the test themselves, was that the second definition Siri offers is succinct and seemingly inaccurate.

“As a noun,” the computer-generated voice said as of press time, “it means, short for ‘motherfucker.'”

We individually confirmed that Siri offers this as its second definition, though plenty of other iPhone users have posted their own tests over the past 16 hours. (Australian Siri says it, too.) The reason this second definition jumps straight from a nurturing matriarch to something less nurturing-sounding can be found in the Oxford Dictionary. There, the entry for “mother” includes the same verbiage for an alternate definition, which is used when “mother” is used as shorthand for the curse. In the dictionary, however, that alternate take is clearly listed as “vulgar slang.” Siri, for whatever reason, does not include that descriptor.

Apple’s Siri voice navigation service has been criticized for various content issues over the years, including lackluster language support and emergency comprehension. In terms of robo-voice services going weirdly awry, on the other hand, the only recent example we have is when when Amazon’s line of Echo products began creepily laughing for no reason. Surprising and inappropriate content has frequently been discovered inside games’ and apps’ code by clever users, of course, particularly the “Hot Coffee” mod that shipped in original versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This article has been updated with references to the Oxford Dictionary as a source for the definition.

Popular Sleep Cycle iPhone App Expands to Apple Watch With ‘Snore Stopper’ and Haptic Wake Up Features

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors

Sleep Cycle, a popular and highly downloaded alarm clock and sleep tracking app available for the iPhone, today announced a new Apple Watch app that introduces more features for an even better waking up experience. With the Sleep Cycle for Apple Watch, Sleep Cycle users can enable “snore stopper” and silent wake up options.

Sleep Cycle uses “sound analysis technology” to detect when someone is snoring, subtly alerting them with a silent vibration sent to the Apple Watch for a more restful night of sleep. The company says that this will “not cause you to wake up,” but instead simply encourage you to change position and stop snoring.

Additionally, the app has a silent wake up function that taps you with haptics to wake you from sleep and avoid disturbing anyone else nearby. Sleep Cycle will also continuously track your heart rate average, providing data that you can revisit when you wake up.

Available from today, Sleep Cycle’s Apple Watch app release features a snore stopper, a welcomed added feature. In addition to the snore tracker, already available in the existing Sleep Cycle alarm clock app using patented sound analysis technology. Snoring is more likely to occur in certain positions. For example, sleeping on your back can cause your tongue and soft palate to collapse to the back of your mouth.

The Sleep Cycle snore stopper uses the silent haptics function of the Apple Watch to gently nudge your wrist when it detects snoring. The alert will not cause you to wake up. But it will have you change position without knowing it and stop snoring. Much like the old trick of sewing tennis balls onto the back of your pajama shirt. No more snore means better quality sleep – for both the snorer and to the delight of potential roommates.

Sleep Cycle on iPhone also uses the same sound analysis technology that tracks snoring to detect movement in an effort to distinguish different sleep phases and provide information on sleep length and quality. This information, which can be viewed on either iPhone or Apple Watch, is used to determine the best time to wake a sleeping person up in the morning, with the aim of cutting down on grogginess by waking people up during the lightest sleep phase.

Sleep Cycle on Apple Watch follows a few sleep tracking apps that have been popular on the App Store, including Sleep++ (which updated recently with automatic sleep tracking), Pillow, and AutoSleep. For Sleep Cycle, the app is free to download and has a collection of features for free, while other features can be added on with a “premium” subscription at $29.99/year.

Beddit is another well-known sleep monitor app, which was acquired by Apple about a year ago. Beddit’s sleep tracking data is accumulated using a thin, flexible sensor — sold for $149.95 on Apple.com — that provides detailed sleep analysis in areas like respiration, temperature, movement, snoring, and more. Apple’s acquisition of Beddit hinted at potential implementation of similar sleep tracking technology in a future Apple Watch, but as of yet the company has not launched a wearable device with built-in sleep analysis features.

Sleep Cycle is available to download for free on the App Store [Direct Link].

iPhone X2 may heavily rely on Apple’s biggest competitor, Samsung

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to TechRadar – All the latest technology news

Apple is reportedly struggling to find a suitable OLED supplier – that isn’t Samsung –  for its new iPhone models rumored to launch later this year with 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch displays.

Its rival Samsung has supplied the screen tech for the iPhone X, but Apple’s effort to diversify its partnership with LG, which the company has purportedly invested $3 billion into, is said to not be working out too well.

While it’s not exactly clear what the problem is, LG’s production of OLED screens has hit a snag and may not to recover in time to meet the gargantuan demand for Apple’s 2018 phones.

Can LG prove itself?

Despite LG’s OLED technology cropping up in some big places last year, namely the Google Pixel 2 XL and the company’s own LG V30, opinions were mixed on their quality. Moreso on the former than the latter, many felt that they paled in comparison to what Samsung can produce.

Interestingly, Apple has ordered LG’s display division to work on a third round of OLED prototypes, something that most suppliers aren’t asked to do, according to sources who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. If it pans out for LG, a supply chain analyst stated that it could contribute as much as 20% of the OLED screens that go into Apple’s new iPhones, while Samsung would pick up the other 80%.

This report states that Samsung’s OLED display is the most costly component found in the iPhone X, costing $97 of the estimated $376 that Apple spends on each unit. But if it can move more of its business to LG, it could eventually drive down costs on future iPhones, resulting in a cheaper product on the shelf.

But of course, that relies on whether LG has what it takes to hang with Samsung’s apparent manufacturing prowess.

5 awesome new iPhone features in iOS 11.3 that no one is talking about

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to BGR

iOS 11 Features

It seems like it took forever, but Apple finally released its hotly anticipated iOS 11.3 update on Thursday afternoon. Why would a software update other than iOS 12 be hotly anticipated, you ask? Despite merely being a “dot” update, this iOS 11.3 release includes a feature that iPhone users have been dying for: a way to disable Apple’s automatic iPhone throttling on devices with older batteries.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, it was revealed earlier this year that Apple had been secretly limiting performance on older iPhone models with batteries that had degraded to a certain point. This mechanism had been added to iOS last year in an effort to prevent inadvertent shutdowns (remember the “30% bug”?), but the fact that Apple did it without telling customers played right into the planned obsolescence conspiracy theories. You know, the people who say Apple secretly slows down older devices to get people to buy new ones. We’ve all laughed at those theories for years… and then it actually happened — though according to statements from Apple, its goal was to stop phones from shutting down rather than force upgrades.

Whatever the case, new battery health features and the ability to disable throttling are definitely the most talked about additions to Apple’s mobile software in iOS 11.3. There are some other things that have Apple fans buzzing as well, such as four new Animoji characters — lion, bear, dragon, and skull — and notifications when iOS wants your personal data. There’s much more to the iOS 11.3 update, though, and in this post we’ll discuss five cool new features that you might not know about.

‘GrayKey’ iPhone Unlocking Box Used by Law Enforcement Shown Off in Photos

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors – Front Page

Last week, news of a previously-unknown iPhone unlocking device called GrayKey

surfaced, and today, MalwareBytes shared photos and additional information about the product, which is designed for law enforcement officials. Created by a company named Grayshift, GrayKey is a small, portable gray box equipped with dual Lightning cables.

Two iPhones can be connected to the GrayKey at once, and need to be connected for about two minutes to install proprietary software that’s designed to guess the passcode for an iPhone. Once the software is installed, it will work to crack the passcode, a process that can take as little as a few hours for a short passcode or several days for a longer six-digit passcode.

Once the GrayKey software has cracked the passcode, it’ll be displayed right on the screen of the iPhone. The iPhone can then be plugged back into the GrayKey to download all of the data on the iPhone, including the unencrypted contents of the Keychain, which can then be accessed using a computer.

Based on screenshots, the GrayKey can crack modern iPhones running modern versions of iOS. It works with the iPhone X and iOS 11.2.5, the version of iOS that was likely available when the screenshots were captured. It probably also works with iOS 11.2.6, unless Apple has managed to block it in the latest operating system update.

Grayshift presumably designed the GrayKey for law enforcement professionals, and it’s relatively expensive. A $15,000 option requires internet connectivity and is geofenced to a specific location once set up, while a $30,000 option requires no internet connection and can be used anywhere.

MalwareBytes worries that the portable version of the GrayKey could easily fall into the wrong hands. It uses two-factor authentication, but given that people “often write passwords on stickies and put them on their monitors,” it’s possible the token could be kept in the same location as the device.

What happens if the GrayKey becomes commonplace in law enforcement? The cheaper model isn’t much of a danger if stolen–unless it’s stolen prior to setup–but at 4″x 4″x 2″, the unlimited model could be pocketed fairly easily, along with its token, if stored nearby. Once off-site, it would continue to work. Such a device could fetch a high price on the black market, giving thieves the ability to unlock and resell stolen phones, as well as access to the high-value data on those phones.

How the GrayKey works is not known, but it’s believed to be using some sort of jailbreaking process that could damage iPhones in some way. It’s also not known how the GrayKey device itself is protecting data that’s stored on it, and whether or not the data could be remotely accessed by hackers.

It’s also unknown who Grayshift is selling the devices to. It’s possible that sales are limited to law enforcement officials in the United States, but it’s also possible that it’s being offered abroad. Other devices of this type have slipped out of the hands of law enforcement and have become widely available, so the same could happen with the GrayKey.

Apple is continually working to fix the kinds of exploits used by devices like the GrayKey, so it’s possible whatever mechanism the box uses will be fixed in a future update. The average iPhone owner likely doesn’t need to worry about the GrayKey, but as MalwareBytes points out, it is troublesome knowing such a device could fall into the hands of malicious entities.

A Toddler Accidentally Locked an iPhone for Nearly Half a Century

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Tech – TIME

Image result for iPhone locked

It’s a modern-day horror story: a 2-year-old child input an incorrect passcode on an iPhone so many times that the device became locked for 47 years, rendering it utterly useless to its formerly digitally-connected owner.

That’s the scenario now facing a Shanghai mother identified only as Ms. Lu by Chinese news reports, whose toddler unfortunately took the time allotted to watch “educational videos” on the phone and instead began the process of disabling the device for, basically, forever.

According to a news report, Ms. Lu waited for two months to see if the situation would improve — but the phone remained locked. “I couldn’t really wait for 47 years and tell my grandchild it was your father’s mistake,” she reportedly said. The alternative mode of accessing the phone is to wipe it with a factory reset. (This is why you should always backup all your data.)

iPhones can become locked with six failed attempts at inputting a passcode on the lock screen, and the amount of time for which the phone is locked can compound with ongoing attempts to break in. So for all the parents out there: maybe be careful letting your kid loose on your phone, assuming you want to still be able to use it when they’re done, of course.

Consumer Reports Says iPhone X Offers the Best Smartphone Camera

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors – Front Page

Apple’s newest flagship device, the iPhone X, has the best smartphone camera currently available according to new rankings published this week by Consumer Reports.

Furthermore, Apple devices took up most of the spots on Consumer Reports’ list of top 10 smartphone cameras, with the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus following the iPhone X. The iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and 6 Plus also earned top 10 spots.

  1. Apple iPhone X
  2. Apple iPhone 8
  3. Apple iPhone 8 Plus
  4. Samsung Galaxy S8+
  5. Apple iPhone 7
  6. Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  7. Samsung Galaxy S8
  8. Samsung Galaxy Note8
  9. Apple iPhone 7 Plus
  10. Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

Introduced in November, the iPhone X has two 12-megapixel rear lenses arranged in a vertical orientation, one that’s an f/1.8 aperture wide-angle lens and an f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens. These lenses are combined with features unique to Apple like an Apple-designed image signal processor with advanced pixel processing, improved color filters, a better sensor, faster autofocus, and optical image stabilization for both the telephoto and the wide-angle lenses, a first for an iPhone.

The iPhone X’s rear camera is combined with the front-facing TrueDepth camera system that enables neat features like a selfie Portrait Mode, which blurs the background of a selfie image and sets it apart from the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Apple has also done a lot of work on software to complement the camera offerings on the iPhone X, introducing features like Portrait Lighting for adding studio-quality lighting effects to your images. The result of all of these features is the best camera that’s been introduced in an iPhone to date, and it’s been highly praised in reviews and evaluations.

Photographer Austin Mann, for example, said the iPhone X camera was the “most exciting” upgrade he’d seen since he switched from a Blackberry 7230 to the original iPhone back in 2007. Photography site DxO gave the iPhone X’s camera a score of 97, higher than any other iPhone, while DPReview, another noted photography review site said it is capable of “extremely impressive” results.

Apple smartphones have long been some of the most widely used and popular cameras available, topping the list of Flickr’s most popular camera for multiple years running. The iPhone’s popularity as a photography device has spurred Apple to make continuous improvements to photo quality with each new iteration, and iPhone image quality is now at the point where it comes close to offering the kind of effects you can get with a DSLR camera.

Consumer Reports’ current list does not include the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+, and it will be interesting to see how Samsung’s newest devices measure up to the iPhone X. Both of Samsung’s latest smartphones feature Dual Aperture 12-megapixel lenses with f/1.5 and f/2.4 modes, with the lenses able to switch between these two apertures depending on the lighting conditions.

This kind of Dual Aperture functionality is useful for finding a balance between light and image quality. The f/1.5 lens is useful in low lighting conditions because it lets in more light, but with a wider aperture comes a compromise in image sharpness in certain areas of the photo. Therefore, in conditions where the lighting is better, the f/2.4 lens that’s also included will provide a crisper, higher-quality image.

It’s time to dump those old iPhones and iPads

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Latest blogs for ZDNet

If you’re running an older iPhone or iPad that’s stuck on iOS 9, then you need to plan some sort of escape strategy following this week’s leak of Apple’s iBoot source code to GitHub.

Apple was quick to downplay the effect of this leak:

“Old source code from three years ago appears to have been leaked, but by design the security of our products doesn’t depend on the secrecy of our source code. There are many layers of hardware and software protections built in to our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections.”

However, there are iPhone and iPad users who should be worried – people who are still using iOS 9. According to Apple’s own usage share figures, seven percent of active iOS devices are current running iOS 9 or below.

Doesn’t seem like a lot, but with over a billion active iOS devices in circulation, that small percentage expands out into around 70 million devices.

And now that the iBoot source code is in the hands of anyone who wants a copy, it’s likely to give hackers ideas, inspiration, and above all, vulnerabilities to allow them to crack open older devices.

Here are my recommendations:

  • Recognise that devices running iOS 9 are now on borrowed time
  • Consider phasing them out, especially if they are home to information that is valuable – emails, banking, health, and so on
  • If you insist on continuing to use them, consider removing important information off the device
  • The end to iOS updates means that built-in apps such as Safari and Mail will no longer receive updates, and running outdated web browsers and email apps is a bad idea (you might want to start shifting to third-party apps — yes, I know this is a hassle, but this is the work you have to put into keeping your device safe)
  • If your Wi-Fi router has a “guest network” feature, then consider setting this up and only connecting your obsolete device to this, because it will go some way to preventing any security vulnerabilities on your device and from giving hackers access to other devices on your networks (although this is far from perfect and can cause some features — such as streaming to another device — to stop working)
  • Since a common route for vulnerabilities is web browsing, it might also be worthwhile to install a VPN tool (such as Freedome) that offers the ability to filter out harmful websites

The bottom line is that anything still running iOS 9 is already vulnerable (there have been loads of iOS security fixes released since iOS 9 support ended) so you’re already skating on thin ice.

This iBoot code release just made the ice a bit thinner.

Apple might launch a new cheap iPhone this year — and it feels like the iPhone 5C fiasco all over again (AAPL)

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Business Insider

KGI Securities iPhone Lineup 2018

  • Financial analysts predict Apple will launch three new iPhone models this year.
  • One of the models will be a new lower-cost iPhone with facial recognition and an edge-to-edge screen.
  • It could cost between $700 and $800, predicts KGI Securities.

Apple customers who like the iPhone X’s facial recognition and edge-to-edge screen but were turned off by the $999 price tag may have additional options at lower prices this fall.

Apple is working on a lower-cost iPhone with some of the iPhone X’s best features for a launch later this year, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The lower-cost iPhone will have the same facial recognition sensor as the iPhone X, as well as an edge-to-edge 6.1-inch LCD screen and no home button. Kuo predicted in a January 23 note it could cost between $700 and $800 — significantly less than the iPhone X, but higher than the current iPhone 8 models.

However, KGI Securities says to expect some tradeoffs with the lower-cost iPhone, like the possible inclusion of a single-lens rear camera to save costs. KGI Securities believes it will have an LCD screen, which is an older technology than the OLED screen found in the iPhone X. And Kuo predicts it will have an aluminum casing, which is less premium than the stainless steel on the iPhone X.

But the lower price may end up making the new iPhone the best-selling model, with over half of new lineup shipments, KGI Securities predicts.

The low-cost device isn’t the only new iPhone KGI Securities predicts Apple will launch. Apple could be preparing a new version of the iPhone X with better components in the same 5.8-inch sized-body. And there could be a so-called “Plus” version of the iPhone X launched this fall with a massive 6.5-inch OLED screen.

Apple typically launches new iPhones in September.

It’s the 5C all over again

Apple iPhone 5c phones are pictured at the Apple retail store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York September 20, 2013. REUTERS/Adrees LatifThe KGI Securities research, which hasn’t been confirmed by Apple, suggests that the company may try to pull a trick that it last tried in 2013.

In 2013, Apple tried to introduce a new-lower cost iPhone, called the iPhone 5C, instead of selling the previous year’s model at a discounted price.

It was a sales disaster — Apple CEO Tim Cook even admitted that the device sold more poorly than the company expected. Demand for the colorful iPhone “turned out to be different than we thought,” Cook said in 2014.

It seems that Apple may try the iPhone 5C gambit again. KGI Securities predicts that Apple may discontinue the current iPhone X model, instead of selling it at a lower price after the new iPhones come out.

The new lower-cost iPhone could help Apple gain market share in China, according to the research, which was also the goal for the iPhone 5C.

“Lowering iPhone X’s price after the … new models launch would be a negative to product brand value given 3D sensing and OLED display are features of the new high-price model,” Kuo wrote in a January 22 note.

Nikkei reported over the weekend that Apple was slashing iPhone production earlier this week. KGI Securities earlier this month revised its estimate for total iPhone X shipments over its lifetime to 62 million, down from 80 million, in a January 18 research note and said that shipments were “lower-than-expected.”

If Apple were to discontinue the iPhone X this year, the lineup this Christmas could look a little bit like this:

  • iPhone “X2 Plus” — Price unknown
  • iPhone “X2” — $999 and up
  • iPhone X — discontinued
  • LCD iPhone with Face ID — $700 to $800
  • iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus — $599 or $699 (after expected annual $100 price cut)
  • iPhone SE (KGI Securities says updated model is unlikely) — $350

Winners in the supply chain

KGI Securities “Apple Insight” research, which often successfully predicts future Apple products, is targeted toward investors who might want to invest in companies that sell Apple computer parts and other components that go into iPhones and Macs.

The firm sees one major investment opportunity based on the forecasted iPhone lineup: Any companies that may be working on parts or assembly for the new, lower-cost iPhone.

KGI Securities also writes that companies that make 3D sensors could benefit from Apple’s iPhone plans, but the firm warns that “attractive beneficiaries” will be fewer than last year, considering that Apple already has suppliers for its Face ID camera.

The research also identifies a few companies that make printed circuit boards for Apple that stand to benefit, especially Unimicron.

“We expect the new 6.1” LCD iPhone to account for around 50% of new lineup shipments thanks to a more affordable price, with shipment momentum extending into [the first half of 2019], boosting the slow season outlook. We therefore believe the supply chain of this particular model will attract investors,” KGI Securities wrote in a January 23 note.

Some companies that could get a lot of business from the new low-cost iPhone include Pegatron and Wistron, which both currently assemble Apple products. Pegatron will get the “lion’s share,” or 60% of the assembly orders for the new low-cost iPhone, according to the research. Wistron will only manufacture 10%, but with a chance to raise that share, KGI Securities predicts.

The Power to Charge it All

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Yanko Design

nomad_wireless_charging_hub_03

If you’re one of those lucky individuals who own more than one high-tech device that you carry around all day – iPhone, GoPro, Airpods, iPad and so on – then Nomad has heard your prayers and answered them gracefully. Conveniently charge five devices at once with the Nomad Wireless Charging Hub. The Nomad Wireless Charging Hub has a wireless top that charges your phone, as well as four extra ports underneath.

Looking somewhat like a router, this wireless charger is the most efficient one of its kind. I never thought I would see a wireless charger and think it looks perfect with more wires coming out of it, but here I am. Thankfully, due to the LED network on the top of the device, one can check if their device is charging and/or fully charged (the LEDs are orange when charging and white when fully charged). But of course, these lights can be a pain during the night. Keeping that in mind, Nomad has included an inbuilt ambient light sensor that dims the lights in a dark room – how considerate.

SquareTrade Says iPhone X is ‘Most Breakable iPhone Ever’ as Glass Shatters in Series of Drop Tests

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors

Apple says the iPhone X has the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone, with a strengthening layer that is 50 percent deeper, but a series of drop tests show that glass and concrete still don’t play well together.

SquareTrade, a company that provides extended warranties for electronic devices, conducted several breakability tests on the iPhone X, and found that its glass back and lack of a home button make it “the most breakable iPhone ever.”

Not only did the iPhone X’s glass shatter when dropped on its front and back from a height of six feet, but the display also malfunctioned. Keep in mind that pocket height for most people is about three feet.

SquareTrade is naturally using the opportunity to push its two-year smartphone protection plan, which was recently reduced to $129 plus a $99 deductible for most claims, in the United States.

The plan covers cracked screens, liquid damage, battery failure, Lightning connector failure, and speaker failure. It doesn’t cover loss or theft.

SquareTrade customers now have an in-home repair option with a lower $25 deductible to fix cracked screens. The service is currently available in more than 700 cities across the United States, with new cities added monthly.

A few YouTube channels also tested the iPhone X in extreme conditions to determine how durable and water resistant the device is.

EverythingApplePro placed the iPhone X in a 20-foot tube of water for 35 minutes without any signs of liquid damage occurring. He also put the iPhone X into a running washing machine, and the device still remained functional.

JerryRigEverything scratched the iPhone X with a utility knife, including the cameras, stainless steel frame, and rear Apple logo. He also tried to bend the device, without much success, and burn the display with a lighter.

While breakability tests are generally unscientific, the videos reveal that even the most durable glass in a smartphone isn’t shatterproof.

Apple recently confirmed it will charge out-of-warranty rates of $279 for iPhone X screen repairs, and $549 for any other damage to the device, unless it is a manufacturing defect covered by Apple’s standard one-year limited warranty.

There’s also AppleCare+, an optional, premium warranty plan that extends an iPhone’s warranty coverage to two years from the original purchase date of the device, and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage.

With AppleCare+ for iPhone X, the price of a repair would be the $199 upfront cost of the plan plus a $29 or $99 incidental fee.

If you shatter your iPhone X’s screen once, for example, you would pay $279 out of warranty. With the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with the screen repair incidental fee, you would pay $228.

If you shatter your iPhone X’s back glass, having AppleCare+ is even more worthwhile. Apple’s flat rate is $549 for this type of damage, while the upfront cost of AppleCare+ coupled with a $99 incidental fee totals $298.

All prices above are listed in U.S. dollars. AppleCare+ and Apple’s out-of-warranty repair fees vary in other countries.

SquareTrade conducted breakability tests for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus a few months ago with similar results. Both of the glass-bodied models shattered on all sides in every single drop test, including front and back drops at a distance of six feet, a 22-foot shot drop test, and a tumble test.

How to Stop Your iPhone From Autocorrecting “i” to “A”

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to Gizmodo

If you updated your iPhone to iOS 11.1 you maybe have noticed a weird bug: your iPhone or iPad autocorrects the letter i to an A with a crazy symbol beside it.

It’s annoying, makes typing messages a pain, and is a known issue that Apple is working on a fix for. In the meantime, Apple put up a Support page for the issue with a quick workaround for fixing it using Text Replacement.

To set things up you need to first go into the Settings menu on your device followed by General, then Keyboard, then Text Replacement.

From there, press the + sign and then type an upper-case “I” as the phrase and a lower-case “i” as the shortcut.

Screenshot: E.Price

After you’re done, when you type an i your device will once again autocorrect it to I.

Apple plans to fix the problem in a future software update.

This Doctor Diagnosed His Own Cancer with an iPhone Ultrasound

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to New on MIT Technology Review

Every marketer wants the perfect story to tell. But if you’re in medicine, you don’t want it to be about yourself.

Earlier this year, vascular surgeon John Martin was testing a pocket-sized ultrasound device developed by Butterfly Network, a startup based in Guilford, Connecticut, that he’d just joined as chief medical officer. He’d been having an uncomfortable feeling of thickness on his throat. So he oozed out some gel and ran the probe, which is the size and shape of an electric razor, along his neck.

The Butterfly IQ is the first solid-state ultrasound machine to reach the market in the U.S.

On his smartphone, to which the device is connected, black-and gray images quickly appeared. Martin is not a cancer specialist. But he knew that the dark, three-centimeter mass he saw was something very bad. “I was enough of a doctor to know I was in trouble,” he says. It was squamous-cell cancer.

The device he used, called the Butterfly IQ, is the first solid-state ultrasound machine to reach the market in the U.S. Ultrasound works by shooting sound into the body and capturing the echoes. Usually, the sound waves are generated by a vibrating crystal. But Butterfly’s machine, which has been about eight years in development, instead uses 9,000 tiny drums etched onto a semiconductor chip.

Making ultrasound devices in a semiconductor manufacturing plant, the company hopes, will make the technology much cheaper, more versatile, and eventually something you could use at home.

The mass Dr. Martin discovered with his Butterfly IQ turned out to be cancer.

The company says it will start selling the machine this year for $1,999. “Now we think it’s an individual purchase,” says Martin. “This gives you the ability to do everything at the bedside: you can pull it out of your pocket and scan the whole body.”

How to Force Restart or Hard Reset the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Keep in mind that Apple now refers to the Sleep/Wake button as the Side button as of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors

Apple has changed the method to force restart or hard reset an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, as outlined in a recent support document.

While rebooting an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus requires pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears, restarting an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus takes three steps.

The change appears to have been made because, on iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, pressing and holding the Side aka Sleep/Wake button and one of the Volume buttons now activates the Emergency SOS feature.

Keep in mind that Apple now refers to the Sleep/Wake button as the Side button as of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

How to Force Restart or Hard Reset the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button (aka power) until you see the Apple logo.

Powering off regularly still requires holding down the Side button for a few seconds until the “slide to power off” prompt appears. In iOS 11, there’s also a “Shut Down” option in the Settings app at the bottom of the General menu.

Force restarting an iPhone is different than recovery using DFU mode, for which the steps remain the same as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Huawei takes a shot at iPhone X, says “real AI phone” is coming next month

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to Android Authority

Huawei took a not-so-subtle shot at Apple with its latest video posted on Facebook. It basically makes fun of the iPhone X’s facial recognition feature that failed twice during its first demo at Apple’s event last week. The video ends with a claim that we’ll see the “real AI smartphone” revealed next month, on October 16 to be exact.

The smartphones in question are likely the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, the phablets that will go head to head with the iPhone X as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30. Huawei hasn’t confirmed this, but the devices are scheduled to be unveiled on October 16, so it’s probably a safe bet. Both devices will be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset revealed at IFA 2017, which has built-in AI computing capabilities. The AI platform runs on a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which is basically a piece of hardware that is very good at running neural networks.

Apple set to unveil its new iPhone lineup on September 12th

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to BGR

iPhone 8 Release

Dow Jones is reporting that Apple will unveil its 2017 iPhone lineup at a special event scheduled for Tuesday, September 12. While Apple has yet to issue official invites for the event, the September 12th date does align with previous rumors that recently emerged over the past few days. Assuming that the September 12 date is in fact accurate, Apple in just about two weeks will introduce a brand new iPhone 7s and an iPhone 7s Plus. Of course, it goes without saying that the main attraction at Apple’s upcoming event will be the highly anticipated iPhone 8, a device which may very well usher in the largest iPhone refresh Apple has ever seen.

We’ve never seen anything like this latest iPhone 8 leak

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to BGR

iPhone 8 Release Date

Apple leaks have become shockingly predictable over the past few years. First, bits and pieces start to trickle out as inside sources chat with people who work for Apple suppliers. Based on the types of components Apple orders from these suppliers, various things can be inferred about next-generation iPhones. Then, once a new iPhone’s design is finalized, we start to see CAD drawings leak, and eventually we see full-scale physical mockups like this one make the rounds. Finally, once mass production begins, components from the actual next-gen iPhone leak and the big picture takes shape.

The iPhone 8 has followed the typical leak and rumor cycle, and we likely know almost everything there is to know about the new phone at this point. In an interesting turn of events, however, a new leak may give us a rare inside look at something we’ve never seen before.

iOS 11 beta 6 is available to download right now

iOS 11 is one of the biggest updates to Apple’s mobile operating system in years, and most of the big features are already showing up in the beta.

Your daily selection of the best tech news!

According to BGR

iOS 11 beta 6 released how to download

Just a week after the release of iOS 11 beta 5, Apple’s software developers have already pumped out another version. iOS 11 beta 6 is available for anyone on the developer beta profile to download and install right now.

We’re looking at the release notes to see what’s new right now, but the release of a new beta just a week after the previous version (it’s normally done in two-week cycles) is normally due to some kind of bug fix.

The first brand new iOS 11 app has already leaked

iOS 11 Features: Files App

Apple on Monday will unveil its latest software innovations alongside new hardware, but iOS 11 will probably be the main star of the show. iOS 11, one of the most important features of iPhone 8, is still largely a mystery. But, as careful as Apple may have been with iOS 11 leaks, the company just leaked a brand new application that will be available in iOS 11, and it’s a pretty exciting one: Files.

If there’s one thing missing in iOS, particularly on “Pro” devices, is a files browser. It seems that Apple might fix that in iOS 11 with an appropriate app for that.

A placeholder listing called Files went up in the App Store with just a few hours to go until WWDC 2017 kicks off, 9to5Mac reports.

Apple can make the iPhone easier to use with a simple fix in iOS 11

Apple iOS control centerApple is likely to unveil the next iteration of iOS soon. That means it’s “wish list” season, a time for iPhone owners to compile all the things they’d like to see on their devices. (And then whine about if they don’t arrive.)

For me, there’s one Android-esque bit I’ve wanted since iOS 8, but remains absent today: a customizable Control Center.

For the most part, the Control Center — the little settings menu you swipe up from the bottom of the display — is a good thing. It makes it very easy to access commonly used functions; three or four button presses become a swipe and a tap. This is something any OS that sells itself on “simplicity” should strive to do.

Apple made the whole thing better-looking and more functional with iOS 10, but also a bit more complicated. One panel became three: one to toggle quick settings like WiFi and Bluetooth, one for music and media playback controls, and one with controls for smart home devices that work with Apple’s HomeKit platform.

Apple also added 3D Touch tricks for a few quick settings. Holding down on the camera icon, for instance, lets you choose if you want to launch the camera app in selfie mode, video mode, or slow-motion video mode.

Those are useful enough (though they don’t apply to everything), but the decision to put media controls in a separate window slowed that process down, and the redesign gave some icons more space than they’re worth.

This ties into the Control Center’s big problem: its lack of user control.

As it stands now, the functions you can access are limited to the handful Apple chooses itself. Some of these are expendable. I’ll run through what’s there now to give you an idea:

  • Airplane mode: There’s only one instance in which I use Airplane mode, and that’s on an actual airplane. Otherwise, low-power mode would be useful more often.
  • WiFi: Essential.
  • Bluetooth: Ditto. Apple going all-in on wireless headphones only reinforces that.
  • Do Not Disturb: There are certain situations where it’s crucial for some. Personally, nobody is calling at 1AM, and vibrate is enough, so I typically pass.
  • Orientation lock: If anything, this is an annoyance if you watch videos regularly. I’ve read enough articles in bed to know it’s a pain when the whole screen flips, but that’s about it.
  • Flashlight: Sure, why not.img_2400
  • Timer: A shortcut to the alarm clock would make more sense.
  • Night Shift: It’s surprisingly effective — or at least it feels like it is — but it doesn’t need a spot.
  • Calculator: It’s good when your receipt doesn’t have suggested tip amounts already, but there are plenty of times when people aren’t in a rush to crunch numbers.
  • Camera: No complaints.
  • Brightness slider: Auto-brightness can make it a little redundant, but that can be finicky, so it’s fine. The problem is that trying to swipe at it now inadvertently brings you to the media controls panel half the time.
  • AirDrop: Not the best if you use a Windows laptop or Android tablet.
  • AirPlay: I prefer Roku. Plenty others prefer Amazon or Android.
  • Music playback controls: For sure. Nobody wants to go in and out of Spotify every three minutes. I don’t mind it having its own space, either; the iOS 10 overhaul made it much more robust and spaced out. I’d just like the option to make it the first window I see when music is playing.
  • Home controls: Great if you have a Apple-friendly smart home, thankfully stays out of the way if you don’t.

The point here is that everyone has their preferences. I try to keep my LTE data off when I don’t need it, for instance. But I also have friends who use iMessage. When I’m out, I usually wind up going against my inclinations, because I don’t want to go through the hassle of unlocking the phone and repeatedly tapping through settings menus to get a text. This is annoying, and it happens too often. With Android, it doesn’t.

iphone 7It’s a similar deal if you want to turn on VPN, location data, low-power mode, personal hotspot, and so on. Giving the option to swap these in, or at least to expand the number of toggles there now, or even just to rearrange the existing settings, would seem to be a simple fix.

Adding shortcuts to third-party apps would be even better, though that could open up issues in design (since Apple would need developers to make custom icons) and security (since you may be able to access personal data from the lock screen). Adding shortcuts to Apple’s own apps would at least be a halfway solution.

Is all of this a bit nitpicky? Sure. Would that make it any less useful? Nope. There are many other things it’d be good for Apple to address with the next iOS — multi-user support, a better Siri, the ability to make non-Apple apps your defaults, a dark mode (!) — but I’ll be happy so long as I don’t have to look at the timer icon again.

10 things the Samsung Galaxy S8 can do that the iPhone can’t

samsung president dj koh at galaxy s8 launch

Samsung’s latest phone, the Galaxy S8, is packed with a lot of thoughtful features that you won’t find on the iPhone.

While the iPhone still has a slight edge over the Galaxy S8, there are plenty of things that set it apart from its biggest rival.

Here are the most important Galaxy S8 features you won’t get from the iPhone.

SEE ALSO: The Galaxy S8 review

1. There’s an iris scanner that can be used to unlock the phone and access secure folders.

Samsung says it’s more secure than a fingerprint sensor. The iPhone only has a fingerprint sensor.

2. More screen. The S8 has a 5.8-inch screen. The S8+ has a 6.2-inch screen.

Compare that to the iPhone: The iPhone 7 has a 4.7-inch screen and the iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen.

3. You can charge the Galaxy S8 with a wireless charging pad. There’s also fast charging, which charges the S8 faster than normal.

The iPhone does not have wireless charging. There’s also no fast-charging option.

20+ iPhone tips you’ll use frequently

I write about Apple every day. I write opinions, news analysis, tips, features – all sorts of stuff. Today I thought you might enjoy this collection of 20 lesser-known iPhone tips, which I do hope are of use to you. Here we go:

Fickle fingers

Does Touch ID sometimes fail to recognize your finger as fast as you like? You can improve its accuracy by registering the same fingerprint two or more times in the system. You can improve it even more if you register the same fingerprint on a cold day, and when it is damp, as both can impact your print slightly. Add (and name) fingerprints in Settings>Touch ID & Passcode.

Don’t waste data

If you share images using Messages (and most of us do), and keep hitting your data allocation every month why not try to reduce the size of the attachments you share?

You can do this easily in Settings>Messages>Low Quality Image Mode, which you toggle to on (green). Now the images you send will be less high quality, but they’ll take a lot less space.

Silence and light

Camera mode is interesting because:

  • You can turn off the flashlight just by launching the Camera app when the light is on;
  • You can connect your iPhone silently to power if you launch the app on your device before plugging it in.

AirPlane Mode

Your iPhone will recharge much faster in AirPlane mode.

Cursors

Writing on your iPhone gets a lot easier once you realize that if you hard press the virtual keyboard it will become a touch sensitive cursor you can easily direct to a specific part of your email, Message, or anything else.

Selection

Like the cursor tip? Then don’t forget that you can select text by word, sentence, or paragraph in this mode. Press deeply once for a word, twice for a sentence and three times to select a paragraph. Don’t worry if this doesn’t work initially – it takes a little time to get the rhythm right.

Apple turnover

Silence Siri and Notifications while in a meeting the easy way: just turn you iPhone face down and the proximity sensor will keep them quiet.

Calculator

How to delete a mistyped character in calculator: When we accidentally type the wrong number when creating a calculation many of us delete the whole thing and start again, because it’s not obvious how to delete the mistyped number. All we really need to do is swipe a finger left or right in the input field to delete the last typed number.

Easy touch

Press your finger firmly on the far left of the display and swipe to the middle to get to App Switcher, or swipe all the way across the screen to get to the previously used app.

Where?

When someone gets in touch it’s frustrating when you don’t know which of the telephone numbers or email addresses to use to get back to them.

It’s easy to figure this out, just open up their page in your Contacts app and look for the word ‘Recent’, that will be the number or email they last used to make contact with you.

Call wrangling

When you get a call you can’t deal with don’t just ignore it – tap the Remind Me or Message icons to get back to people with an automatic response or to set a reminder to call someone back. You can change these automated message responses in Settings > Phone > Respond With Text.

Space extenders

You’re short of space and you know it, so visit the Movies/Films section of the iTunes Store, find a movie that is larger than your available capacity, and click rent. The rental should not be initiated as you lack the space, instead choose Settings in the dialog that appears. iPhone will automatically flush as much digital stuff as it can, creating you more space, which you can use until you get the chance to create more space manually.

Gimme my… RSS?

To subscribe to a site’s RSS feed in Safari just tap the Bookmarks button, then tap the @ button at the top. At the bottom of the page tap the Subscriptions item – then, at the bottom of the next page tap ‘Add Current Site’. The site will be added to Safari’s built-in RSS reader. You’ll be able to monitor newly published items in the @ field.

Apple Pay

If you use Apple Pay you may have missed this: When paying for items at checkout you do not need to wake up your iPhone and get to Wallet: Instead, just put your Touch ID-registered finger on the Home button and place your iPhone near the reader. Your phone will wake itself up automatically and deal with the rest.

Make a PDF almost anywhere

I recently wrote about this useful elsewhere, because it’s useful. To make a PDF from almost any iOS app, just tap Share and choose Print. In the Printer Options screen that appears you will see an image of the item you want to print. Use two fingers to expand the image and you’ll enter a preview mode that has its own Share button. Tap this new Share button and you can send it to apps, share it, and do all sorts of other things that may not have been possible using the original app.

Traditional stopwatch

I’m sure you know about the stopwatch feature in the Clock app, but did you know that when you use it you can access a more traditional stopwatch clock face just by swiping your finger left?

Tackle the Tabs

Safari’s ability to handle unlimited tabs is brilliant, but there are three things you may not have noticed:

  • Got a load of open tabs and can’t find the one you need? Turn your iPhone to landscape view and tap the Tabs button at the lower right. You’ll see a new view, at top left you’ll see a search bar. You can use this to search through the webpages and contents you have open in Safari.
  • Closure: Tap and hold the Tab button in any Safari page and you’ll be able to close all your open Tabs in the next item.
  • Reopen: Or tap the Tab button, then tap and hold the + icon to access your Recently Closed Tabs.

Low Power Mode

If you know you want to get more time out of your iPhone one day, don’t forget you can manually switch it to Low Power Mode in Settings>Battery>Low Power Mode. Doing so reduces power consumption by disabling Hey Siri, background app refresh, visual effects, and no longer automatically downloading email, but you’ll get better battery life.

Apple Music

You’ll get more using 3D Touch on Apple Music. When scanning any playlist view a long press on a song title lets you easily access a bunch of useful controls, including Create Station, Love, Dislike, Share and a variety of playback options.

Mail right

Threaded messages are useful, but you may not like the default order in which messages are placed. You can choose whether to show old or new messages first in Settings>Mail.

NB: Unfortunately some of these tips will only work on iPhones with 3D Touch.

Apple said it will stop using material from mines in its iPhones — but it can’t do it yet (AAPL)

tim cook

Apple has pledged to make iPhones out of entirely recycled materials in the future, although it’s not quite there yet.

Vice News reported on Wednesday that Apple has publicly announced that it wants to stop using materials sourced from mines.

The announcement was made in Apple’s 2017 environmental responsibility report, which tracks the company’s green credentials.

“We believe our goal should be a closed-loop supply chain, where products are built using only renewable resources or recycled material,” the report said.

Vice News interviewed Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives Lisa Jackson about the company’s new goal.

“We’re actually doing something we rarely do, which is announce a goal before we’ve completely figured out how to do it,” Jackson said.

Apple’s report says that “when there are materials for which recycling technologies don’t yet exist, we’ll need to invest in research and other technology solutions.”

Apple has often been criticised for using materials from mines in its products. The company was accused in 2014 of using tin from mines that use child labour, for example. And in 2016 an Amnesty International report accused Apple of sourcing cobalt that had been mined by children.

It’s been a long-running public relations nightmare for Apple, and now it says it wants to drop mines altogether and move towards recycled materials for iPhones. This won’t be happening in the next iPhone, though, but it’s a long-term goal for the company.

Jackson was also asked about the so-called “right to repair,” which would give customers the right to repair iPhones themselves using spare parts and proper manuals. “I think trying to pretend that we can sort of make it easy to repair the product, and that you get the product that you think you’re buying — that you want — isn’t the answer,” Jackson said.

Here’s the full segment from Vice News:

Apple just revealed how its iPhone-recycling robot ‘Liam’ works (AAPL)

One of Apple’s biggest launches last year wasn’t a new iPhone or
Mac: It was Liam, a robot that takes apart iPhones so their
components can be recycled.

On Wednesday, Apple revealed many new details about its
iPhone-destroying robot as part of
a newly-public white paper
published along with the company’s
annual environment
report
.

It turns out, “Liam” is actually 29 different robots organized in
an conveyor line with 21 stations, or “cells.” Every 11 seconds,
an iPhone can be taken apart into eight different pieces.

Apple estimates that each Liam can take apart 1.2 million iPhone
6 units in a year, and it currently has two of them up and
running — one in California, and one in the Netherlands.

At the end of the process, Apple is left with boxes comprised of
only a single component — like a screw, or a battery. It looks
like this:

Apple LiamApple

Apple also revealed how it designed Liam. One of the challenges
for the robot is that Liam only takes apart thoroughly busted
iPhones, which means that one broken iPhone can actually look
very different from another broken iPhone.

Here’s how Apple tackled that problem:

The system utilizes two main types of processes to remove
components: (1) end-of-arm-tooling (EOAT) such as a drill bit,
suction cup or fixed tip interacting with a stationary iPhone
unit; and (2) direct robot handling of the iPhone unit to
interact with external active tooling while performing complex
coordinated motions. The EOAT on the robotic arms and external
tool fixtures are all custom developed for the Liam line, as is
the conveyor system that transports the iPhone units between
robotic cells.

Some iPhone components can be tricky to remove, like the battery.
Because of the risk of a battery exploding, Apple puts the iPhone
into a steel compartment called the “sandbox” while it’s being
disconnected and unscrewed.

Then, Apple actually heats up the battery to loosen up the glue
that’s used to affix it to the iPhone, while a suction cup pulls
the battery out. Then, the battery needs to cool down before it’s
removed from its metal box.

If the battery seems like it’s too hot, Apple will literally pour
sand into the “sandbox” until it cools down.

Here’s how Apple illustrates it:

LiamApple

LiamApple

The reason Apple is investing in Liam is because it’s much easier
to recycle materials when the parts are already sorted. Apple
announced an audacious goal on Wednesday to make all iPhones out
of recycled materials — no raw materials necessary — although it
did not specify a timeframe.

“While still an R&D project, Liam is a critical step in the
journey toward establishing a closed-loop supply chain for
Apple,” according to the white paper.

However, the research that is going into Liam may portend more
automated manufacturing in Apple’s future. After all, if it can
take apart an iPhone using automation, perhaps the same tools and
processes will be able to assemble one as well.

Free App ‘Reverb’ Brings Amazon’s Alexa to Mac Desktops, iPhones, and iPads

Developers at U.S. digital consultancy Rain have created a little-known app called Reverbthat allows users to access Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant from their Mac desktop or iOS device.

Launching the free Mac app prompts users to sign in to their Amazon account, after which a window opens showing the familiar blue Alexa ring on the desktop. Click and hold on the ring with the mouse cursor, and provided an internet connection is active, the virtual assistant listens and responds to the sort of spoken questions and commands usually directed at Amazon’s Echo range of smart speakers.

2.png

The iOS app works similarly, and the latest version of Reverb uses Alexa v2, which adds support for news flashes, timers, alarms, long form audio, audiobooks, and more. It can also interact with smart devices that are compatible with Alexa, such as lights, switches, and thermostats compatible with Samsung SmartThings, WeMo, Philips Hue, and others. The only Alexa service Reverb does not support is playing music, due to restrictions Amazon has placed on using Amazon Music in apps.

In addition to the above, users can enable third-party skills through the app with a simple voice command – “Enable Bird Songs”, for example. In testing, the Mac app also responded to new skills enabled through Amazon’s Alexa iOS app, which officially supports and integrates with the Reverb app for iOS.

The apps provide a convenient solution for Echo owners wishing to make Alexa available in, say, their office room or study, without having to buy an additional supporting device. It also offers prospective Echo buyers an opportunity to test the service prior to making a purchase, and at the very least gives curious Mac users a chance to compare Alexa’s and Siri‘s smarts side by side on their desktop.

Reverb for Amazon Alexa is a free download available for Mac from the Mac App Store[Direct Link] and for iPhone and iPad on the iOS App Store [Direct Link].

How to use your iPhone as a magnifying glass

Apple included a nifty hidden camera mode in the latest version of its iPhone software, iOS 10.

“Magnifier” mode uses the iPhone’s camera to magnify text or other small things — handy, especially, for reading fine print, or zooming in on small details.

The hidden mode can also adjust brightness and color, which is useful for people who may have issues seeing specific colors.

Using Magnifier is easy after you turn it on.

First you have to turn it on. The setting is found in Settings > General > Accessibility. Turn “Magnifier” on.

Then it’s easy to access. Simply press the home button three times anywhere on the iPhone — either on the lock screen, the home screen, or in an app.

Here’s what it the screen looks like:

Mangify ModeScreenshot

You can change the magnification by with the slider as needed:

iPhone magnifyScreenshot

By tapping the Venn diagram in the lower right hand corner, you can change the colors if that will make the image easier to see. You can increase or decrease brightness, contrast, and even invert colors.

Apple orders an estimated 160 million iPhone 8 OLED panels, plans massive shipments

We’ve been discussing the expected features on Apple’s iPhone 8 for a few weeks now, including some specific features believed to be limited to the highest-end 10th anniversary model, such as a massive 5.8-inch end-to-end screen, integrated Touch ID functionality baked into the display, and an OLED panel instead of the LCDs all previous iPhones have relied on.

Samsung has signed an agreement with Apple to provide a full 160 million screens for the Apple iPhone 8, according to the Korean Herald (we’ve heard rumors it could also be titled as the iPhone X, though that’s scarcely confirmed). That’s surprising, for several reasons. First, Apple only shipped 211 million devices last year, and 231 million in 2015. If Apple is ordering OLEDs for a full 76% of its previous year in sales, it clearly expects the consumer response to be massive. But that’s surprising given that the iPhone 8/X’s flagship model is expected to cost $1m000. Even if the handset ships with a huge number of new and unusual features, how many people will be willing to pay four digits to get one? Apple’s average selling prices (ASPs) for the iPhone as a whole hit $695 this past quarter, in a new record for the company — but $1000 is a full 1.44x more than that.

This implies one of three things: Either early reports that the Apple iPhone 8/X would be the only model to ship with an OLED are wrong, or Apple believes it will move a truly extraordinary number of iPhones, regardless of the price tag it slaps on them. Granted, this has proven to be true before. In the run-up to the iPhone 5S/5C, most speculation focused on how the iPhone would expand itself into new markets by targeting lower price points. Instead, most sales focused on the iPhone 5S. While Apple still offers an affordable small-screen phone in the iPhone SE, it never went down the iPhone 5C path (with its colorful plastic body and lower-end feel) again.

iPhoneSales

The third possibility is the most prosaic but least exciting of the two. It’s possible that Apple’s larger display order from Samsung reflects the fact that the Cupertino-based company has decided to ship its first halo phone with OLED, but that $1,000 hardware will be a new price point that the company targets for at least two generations, and that OLEDs will be reserved for this flagship device. In this context, Apple’s decision to increase its OLED order simply means it intends to use the same panels in more than one phone generation. There’s nothing stopping companies from working out multi-year supply contracts at once, after all.

I’m genuinely uncertain which of these is the most likely outcome, mostly because there’s a case to make for all of them. Apple could also decide to take 1-2 halo features (OLED and wireless charging, for instance) and roll them out to the iPhone 8/X and the 7s Plus, while keeping the iPhone 7s on a traditional LCD.

iPhone 8 rumors: Wireless charging and glass casing, per KGI Securities

All three iPhones expected to launch later this year will have wireless charging, according to a new forecast by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple is expected to release three new iPhones next fall — one premium model with a better screen using “OLED” technology, and two more iterative improvements to the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

All three will have glass casing and wireless charging, according to Kuo’s note seen by Business Insider.

Apple may be concerned that the new iPhones may overheat more than older phones, according to the research. Glass casing and wireless charging are “unfavorable to thermal system operation,” says Kuo.

From the note:

Adoption of glass casing & wireless charging unfavorable to thermal system operation for three new 2017F iPhone models; bigger impact on OLED model. The thermal system becomes less efficient with glass casing, as compared to metal casing used previously. Furthermore, wireless charging increases handset temperature. While we don’t expect general users to notice any difference, lamination of an additional graphite sheet is needed for better thermal control and, thus, steady operation; this is because FPCB is replaced with film, which is more sensitive to temperature change of the 3D touch sensor in OLED iPhone.

Kuo notes that the new, premium phone will have more overheating issues than the other two. Apple might have to add an insulating graphite sheet to prevent it from malfunctioning. That sheet, and other tech changes, could raise the price that Apple pays for the 3D Touch module for the new OLED iPhone as much as 50%.

The research note distributed to clients focuses on some of the parts that Apple buys from suppliers to make its screens and features like 3D touch work.

“We believe OLED iPhone will provide a better 3D touch user experience on the back of the new design,” Kuo writes. Because of this, Kuo advises clients to expect shares of Apple suppliers General Interface Solution and TPK Holding Company to outperform.

The cost of cutting edge parts may be one reason why it’s rumored that the premium OLED iPhone could cost over $1000, according to a recent report.

Here’s what we’re expecting from the iPhone 8:

  • A 5.8-inch OLED screen.
  • Wireless charging.
  • Sides made of “forged stainless steel” and a back made of glass.
  • The home button and fingerprint sensor built into and under an edge-to-edge screen.
  • A double lens camera, like on the iPhone 7 Plus.
  • New 3D-sensing technology enabling “some form of facial/gesture recognition.”
  • A launch date in the fall — likely in September, as usual.

iPhone Vs Android: Performance tests show how dominant Apple is.

Remember a few short years ago when Android smartphone makers first began touting the specs of their smartphones as a big advantage of Apple’s iPhone line? Quad-core and octa-core processors — woo! 2GB of RAM… 3GB of RAM… so much RAM! Meanwhile Apple kept releasing new iPhones with dual-core processors and a measly 1GB of RAM. What on Earth was Apple thinking?! Of course, when people actually got around to testing these brawny Android phones and pitting them against Apple’s iPhone lineup, they quickly realized that Apple’s smartphones routinely obliterated the competition. Again, and again, and again, and again.

On paper and in real-world speed tests, Apple’s iPhones always seem to come out on top. It’s not terribly surprising to people who are paying attention, of course, because Apple devotes tremendous resources to developing its own key components, optimizing them, and streamlining its iOS software. Well, a new batch of tests have just been released, and they help illustrate once again just how dominant Apple’s latest iPhone 7 really is.

Gadget fans have been sharing the results of head to head performance tests ever since the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were released back in September. Apple’s latest iPhones have been pitted against the Galaxy S7, the OnePlus 3, the late Galaxy Note 7, the LG V20 and both new Google Pixel phones. Of course, the Pixel and Pixel XL are the cream of the crop this holiday season since Samsung’s Note 7 has been cancelled, so focus remains on how Google’s first “made by Google” phones stack up against Apple’s latest and greatest iPhones.

Well, to be frank, they don’t stack up very well.

We’ve seen the benchmarks and we’ve seen a handful of speed and performance tests, and now a new video published by YouTube user “Tech of Tomorrow” combines a number of performance related tests into a single video. We see how the Pixel stacks up against the iPhone 7 in a few key areas, and you might be surprised at how big the discrepancy is even with something as simple as Wi-Fi transfer speeds.

Then we get to the standard “real-world” performance test where the same series of apps is opened in order on both devices to see which phone opens them more quickly. A second “round” then tests how well each phone switches apps and holds them in memory. Long story short, the results are pretty embarassing — Apple’s iPhone 7 completed both rounds in about the same amount of time it took the Pixel to complete its first round. There are a number of reasons for the performance gap spanning things related to hardware, platform and third-party development, but the endgame is simple: The user experience on the iPhone 7 is dramatically faster than it is on the Google Pixel.

The full video is embedded below.

Apple Event October 2016: What to expect other than Macs | ESIST

Apple Event October 2016Image Source: Jose Sanchez/AP/REX/Shutterstock

Apple’s biggest event of the year has obviously come and gone at this point, and millions of people have new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus handsets in their pockets right now. The annual iPhone press conference is always the Apple event that fans look forward to most each year, and a new iOS unveiling at WWDC is a close second. But 2016 isn’t over yet and Apple has one more event planned before the year is through.

This event isn’t anticipated quite as eagerly as other recent Apple events, mainly because Apple’s Mac lineup is expected to be the focus. Apple makes some great computers and the company’s next-generation MacBook Pro is getting some very nifty new features, but desktop and laptop computers aren’t quite as sexy as smartphones these days. Of course, Apple has more in store for us than just new Macs, so let’s take a look at what we can expect from next week’s press conference.

The stars of the show next week at Apple’s big event on October 27th will be Macs. The new MacBook Pro with a special OLED touch bar in place of the function row key will likely be the biggest news from the show, and we can expect refreshed MacBook Airs and more as well. For those of you uninterested in Macs who are wondering what else we might see unveiled next Thursday, there are a few things you likely have to look forward to.

apple-iphone-7-airpods

First, Apple will almost certainly announce an on-sale date for its new AirPods. And that release date will almost certainly be the following day, October 28th. Apple said when it unveiled its new wireless headset that it would go on sale sometime in October, and “sometime in October” is quickly disappearing.

thunderbolt-display

Next up, Apple might finally unveil a next-generation Thunderbolt Display. The company’s most recent model was discontinued earlier this year, and an updated version with 5K resolution has been rumored to be in development for quite some time. If that new display is real, it will probably be announced at next week’s event and released soon after.

iphone-7-plus-silver

If Apple’s Mac computer and peripheral lineup is completely uninteresting to you, there’s still one likely announcement that you can look forward to. Apple’s iOS 10.1 betas have been coming hot and heavy lately, with iOS 10.1 beta 5 having been released earlier this week. Apple will most likely announce release timing during the event on Thursday, and it might even push the public build out that very same day. As a refresher, iOS 10.1 includes a number of bug fixes and refinements, but the main new feature is the addition of Portrait Mode to the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera.

apple-tv

Finally, and least likely, is an updated Apple TV of some kind. Here at BGR we give this about a 1% chance of happening, but a few rumors have suggested that Apple might replace the entry-level third-generation Apple TV that was discontinued earlier this month with a new model that’s updated but still cheaper than the current entry-level model, which costs $149. Compared to rival streaming devices with price points that start at just $39.99 like the Fire TV Stick, the Apple TV is a tall order.

Apple’s event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT on Thursday, October 27th, and BGR will be covering all the news as it breaks.

Apple Offers a Temporary Workaround if the Home Button Fails on an iPhone 7

With the introduction of the iPhone 7, Apple did away with the classic click-mechanism home button in favor of a “solid-state” pressure sensitive one that uses haptic feedback to mimic traditional button presses.

The programming that controls the Taptic Engine-powered feedback is deeply integrated into iOS 10, so much so that it appears Apple’s latest iPhone is able to automatically offer a temporary workaround when its diagnostic software senses that the technology is playing up.

iphone 7 broken home button
MacRumors forum member ‘iwayne’ shared the above picture of his iPhone 7 display after the device unexpectedly turned itself off while charging and the haptic feedback began malfunctioning after a restart. A dialog prompt warns that the home button is in need of repair, but presents an alternative onscreen home button for temporary use until the phone has been turned in to Apple for servicing.

MacRumors has previously noted that the Taptic Engine can become unresponsive if the OS freezes, which forced Apple to change the reset process for the iPhone 7 series. Apple has also apparently safeguarded against instances when the button’s haptic sensor system breaks completely, but whether or not its failure rate is any better than a physical button remains to be seen.

Rumors suggest Apple will ditch the iconic home button entirely for next year’s “iPhone 8” in favor of one built directly into an edge-to-edge display, but it’s unclear if Apple intends to implement the same button-based recovery methods for instances in which devices freeze or stop responding completely.

Verizon promises Google Pixel will get updates immediately just like iPhones | ESIST

1.jpg

Verizon Wireless is completely dismissing the idea that it will be slowing down future Android updates on Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Last week, Google revealed that although it’s handling software and security updates for the devices, Verizon must certify themfor carrier-sold Pixels before they can be rolled out to customers. That at least raised thepossibility that Verizon-sold Pixel phones might not get new Android features as soon as they’re available for the Pixels that Google sells directly.

But a very straightforward statement that Verizon gave to Ars Technica seems to eliminate any potential concern. (Emphasis added by The Verge.)

First and foremost, all operating system and security updates to the Pixel devices will happen in partnership with Google. In other words, when Google releases an update, Verizon phones will receive the same update at the same time (much like iOS updates). Verizon will not stand in the way of any major updates and users will get all updates at the same time as Google.

Also, the Verizon version of the Google Pixel is carrier unlocked, so you can use it where ever you like. Finally, we have three apps pre-installed on the phone Go90, My Verizon (which is your account management tool) and Verizon Messages (your messaging app). As you noted, all three can easily be uninstalled by the user.

There’s a lot of good stuff in that statement that should relieve people planning on buying a Pixel from Verizon next week. First, Verizon is stating directly that it will not “stand in the way” of Google’s updates. Somewhat remarkably, the carrier says the arrangement between both companies is similar to Apple’s complete control over iOS software releases. That’s not a comparison we’ve ever heard Verizon make about updates from Samsung, LG, Motorola, and other Android phone makers.

Second, the Pixel and Pixel XL will be unlocked for use on other networks — just like the other smartphones that Verizon sells. And third, it sounds as if the three — just three! — preloaded apps can be uninstalled by users. Hopefully that’s true and Verizon isn’t talking about merely disabling them, which isn’t quite the same as removing the apps entirely.

Either way, it’s hard to read this any other way: Verizon is pledging that Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL won’t fall behind when it comes to future Android updates. Does that make you more confident in purchasing from a Verizon store instead of Google come October 20th?

Teen Hacker Says He Jailbroke The iPhone 7 in Just 24 Hours | ESIST

The iPhone 7 is, in Apple’s own words, “the best, most advanced iPhone ever.” It is not, however, impossible to hack.

A teenage hacker has found a way to circumvent the phone’s security and restrictions, jailbreaking a brand new iPhone 7 running iOS 10, effectively taking full control of it and allowing him to install apps not approved by Apple. The 19-year-old hacker, who’s known online as qwertyoruiop but whose real name is Luca Todesco, took advantage of a series of bugs he found and exploited—and all it took him, he said, was just 24 hours.

“They definitely made my life harder,” Todesco, who has a well-established reputation for finding bugs and jailbreaking iPhones, told Motherboard in a message. “The iPhone 7 is a step in the right direction. Obviously it’s not 100 percent secure—like nothing else is.”

”[The iPhone 7] not 100 percent secure—like nothing else is.”

The jailbreak appears to be the very first one achieved on an iPhone 7. Todesco showed off his successful jailbreak on Twitter on Wednesday, just five days after the release of the iPhone 7, and barely a week after the release of iOS10.

“This is a jailbroken iPhone 7,” Todesco tweeted, accompanying the message with a screenshot that shows a terminal where he has “root,” the highest admin privileges on a computer system.

Todesco shared a video of his jailbroken iPhone 7 with Motherboard to prove his feat.

Todesco said that, at least for now, he’s keeping the details of how he jailbroke the phone to himself—at least until Apple releases a patch. That’s the only choice he has, he added, given that Apple won’t give bug hunters special devices that allow them to load custom firmware.

“Being able to have access to the hardest target among mobile targets is very useful,” he said, explaining that having a jailbroken phone is useful to do live debugging and find even more bugs.

He also said that he could definitely submit the vulnerabilities he found to Apple, since they fall under the newly launched bug bounty, but he hasn’t decided whether to do that yet. The hacker told me that he needs to polish the exploits a bit more to make the jailbreak “smoother,” and that he is also planning to make this jailbreak work through the Safari browser just like the famous “jailbreakme.com,” which allowed anyone to jailbreak their iPhone 4 just by clicking on a link.

“Jailbreaks are just too valuable to give away for free because they have been known to go for more than $500,000.”

While Todesco might not share his technique until Apple patches it, security experts believe he is just the first, but there will be others that will figure out how to jailbreak the new iPhone. In fact, others may already have achieved it without telling anyone.

“Jailbreaking likely hasn’t stopped at all,” Ryan Duff, a security researcher and former member of US Cyber Command, told Motherboard. “Jailbreaks are just too valuable to give away for free because they have been known to go for more than $500,000.”

Will Strafach, an iOS security researcher who developed jailbreaks in the past, said that Todesco seems to be the first “trusted” party to claim an iPhone 7 jailbreak, although he’s heard unconfirmed rumors of private Chinese teams who also have done it.

There could be secret jailbreaks out there. Last month, researchers caught government hackers using what was effectively a remote jailbreak for the iPhone 6s in the wild. It’s unclear how long those exploits were being used before someone noticed.

Apple declined to comment on Todesco’s jailbreak. A company spokesperson simply said that it “appears [Todesco’s jailbreak] isn’t out in the wild,” and pointed to Apple’spublic stance on jailbreaks.

“Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS,” the companystates in a page on jailbreaking.

When asked if Apple knows whether Todesco’s jailbreak is legit, the spokesperson simply answered: “I don’t but given his track record, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Todesco himself said that while Apple made it harder this time, there’s always, and there will always be someone that can find a way to jailbreak it.

“Kudos for the iPhone 7. They have again changed the rules of the game,” he told me. “I don’t think it will ever be enough. They can raise the effort required, but there will always be someone willing to invest enough time to do it.”

Intel’s Chips Finally Find Their Way Into the iPhone | ESIST

The smartphone years have not been kind to Intel. The company ignored the transition to mobile early on, allowing ARM-based processors to take an early, decisive lead. Intel’s presence in pocket computers hasn’t just been minimal, it’s been practically nonexistent. That is, until the iPhone7.

Bloomberg first reported that Intel had worked out a deal with Apple in June, but now that the iPhone 7 has shipped, we have actual confirmation, thanks to a teardown from Chipworks. Apple may make its own processors now, but Intel’s providing an entire mobile cellular platform to the Cupertino company, the transceivers and modem that help put the “phone” in smartphone. For the first time, a flagship mobile device has Intel inside. Better late than never.

Fashionably Late

Intel’s made it into a handful of smartphones before, but this really is the first component placement at anything that could be considered serious scale. “Intel has been working eight, nine years for something like this to happen,” says Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy. “You have the premiere smartphone brand in Apple, who has incredibly high quality and experience metrics.”

Being in the iPhone, in other words, isn’t important simply for sales. It gives Intel components Apple’s imprimatur, a potential signal to other companies that it’s ready to play in the big leagues Continue Reading…

Everybody 5G

When Intel’s Aicha Evans took the stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress in February, she spent an hour focused not on current smartphone ambitions, but about a future cellular network standard: 5G.

We could spend a few thousand words outlining 5G in detail, but the short version should work for now. Remember the transition from 3G to 4G, how the Internet on your phone was suddenly much, much faster? It was the difference between clacking up a roller coaster’s first incline and barreling down the other side. That’s what 5G will feel like next to 4G, with some smart home and wearables support thrown in as a bonus.

Warning: iOS 10 is reportedly screwing up people’s phones [Update]

1.jpg

After releasing iOS 10 earlier today, some users are reporting ‘bricked’ devices after attempting to update to the new operating system. Most of the issues seem to come from over-the-air (OTA) updates, meaning a device that attempts to download and install the update without plugging it in — something Apple used to require.

The issues seem fairly widespread. The OTA update begins and leaves users staring at a ‘Connect to iTunes’ screen that forces a complete firmware re-install. If you forego the wiping and re-installation of iOS from your iPhone or iPad, you’re left with a bricked and completely useless device.

Not all users are having the issue though. I updated from the last beta version of iOS 10 to the launch version this morning without incident.

Apple AirPods hands (and ears) on

The Apple’s new $159 AirPods, which are the company’s first truly wireless earbuds. They look… just like the old EarPods, with the wires cut off.

They sound fine, although it was hard to tell in the din of the event. Apple’s not making any big deal about redesigning the sound of them, so I would expect them to sound like the EarPods. The major thing is obviously that they’re wireless, which is interesting. Pairing was basically instant, although I heard one of the demo people tell another that it sometimes takes up to 10 seconds. You just flip the lid of the charging case up, and the iPhone slides up an AirPods screen that asks you to pair them (if it’s the first time you’ve used them) or if you want to connect (if you’ve already set them up). After the initial connection, it’s seamless — you just open the case, put them in, and go. The case has a Lightning port on the bottom for charging, with a built-in battery that can supply 25 hours of listening; the individual AirPods can run for up to five hours on a charge.

Apple Working on Special Version of iPhone for Japan, Will Include FeliCa Tap-to-Pay Chip – ESIST

Apple is developing a version of the iPhone for Japan that includes one of Sony’s FeliCa chips to enable contactless transit payments, reports Bloomberg.

FeliCa is a tap-to-pay format developed by Sony and built into cards that are used to access Japan’s railway and bus system. FeliCa is faster than Apple Pay, allowing transactions to occur in a fraction of a second, which makes it suitable for use in a fast-paced transit environment. It’s also able to store e-money that can be used at vending machines and cafes across the country.

Apple plans to work with several transit card providers to create virtual versions of FeliCa transit cards that can be stored in the Wallet app on the iPhone and used in place of a physical card.

1.jpg

The FeliCa chip will let customers in Japan store their public bus and train passes on their iPhones. Users would then be able to tap their phones against the entrance scanners instead of using physical cards. While the FeliCa chip is the standard technology underlying the service, there are several different providers of transit payment cards based on the type of transit and areas within Japan.

Siri Held Back by Lack of Advancements in Microphone Technology – ESIST

Services like Siri, Cortana, and Alexa are being held back by a lack of advancements in digital microphone technology, reports Bloomberg, citing the opinions of several analysts.

While processors, camera sensors, and other vital iPhone components have evolved rapidly over the course of the last several years, the same can’t be said for microphones. Digital microphones still have trouble focusing on filtering out background noise and clearly detecting faraway voices, impacting device listening capabilities.

With artificial intelligence growing in popularity, however, Bloomberg says manufacturers are scrambling to improve microphone tech.

“No doubt, there is an arms race,” says Peter Cooney, an analyst at SAR Insight & Consulting. The big tech companies are thinking a lot more about mics than they have for the past few years. Since the 2012 launch of the iPhone 5, “microphone performance has not really improved that much,” says Marwan Boustany, an analyst with research firm IHS Markit.

Apple and other companies who rely on microphones to deliver queries to smartphones and other devices are said to want technology improvements that will make them better able to distinguish voices from other sounds at longer distances.

Firefox for iOS just received a slew of new updates

Firefox has rolled out some brand new features for its iOS browser, including the ability to add website-specific search engines and tab recovery.

First off, the browser is now speedier than before, with a 40% reduction in CPU usage and 30% reduction in memory usage noted in the latest version of Firefox for iOS. You might appreciate that extra speed when it comes to the next feature, which sounds pretty darn useful: the ability to search any website within the address bar.

For instance, you could add in eBay or Wikipedia and search straight from the browser’s address bar without ever leaving the page you’re currently on. You can head to a website with its own search box, tap on the magnifying glass, and add it to your (growing) list of search engines.

iOS 9.3.3 Jailbreak: How to jailbreak iOS 9.3.3, iOS 9.2 on iPhone | ESIST

iOS 9.3.3 Jailbreak

Apple’s iOS software grows more and more capable with each new release, which in turn makes jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad far less appealing than it used to be. Years ago, third-party apps were so limited that jailbreaking was practically a necessity for anyone who wanted to get the most out of his or her iOS device. But in 2016 the story has changed, and it’ll change even more once iOS 10 is released this fall. Of course, there are still plenty of jailbreak apps and tweaks that hardcore users just can’t seem to live without, and they’ll be very happy to learn today’s news.

Apple just released iOS 9.3.3 to the public last week but the Chinese iOS hacking team Pangu has already managed to jailbreak it. There are a few caveats that make this particular jailbreak a bit tricky though, which is why you’ll find the how-to guide in the video below particularly useful.

Before we dive in, there are a few important things you should know. First, the obligatory jailbreak warning: you should only follow this guide if you’re an advanced user. Things can and do go wrong. You also may void your iPhone or iPad’s warranty by following the steps outlined in this guide.

Love it or hate it, no one can argue that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s are unattractive phones. Apple has always had an incredible collective sense of style and design, and that extended to the iPhone right out of the gate in 2007. Perhaps that’s why so many of Apple’s rivals have copied the company’s designs so shameless time and time again. As great as Apple’s designs are though, there are always people who wish something was a little different — no antenna lines, or a flat back instead of a camera bump.

One wish in particular has made the rounds quite frequently over the past two years: people want a gold iPhone with a black face. The bad news is that there’s no sign Apple has plans to offer this sought-after color combo anytime soon. And the worse news for people who want a black and gold iPhone is that it looks even better than you thought it would.

If you’ve been pining after a black and gold iPhone ever since Apple first launched the iPhone 6, Reddit user The_Gold_Gatsby is now your best friend (and your worst enemy, since you’re about to get a taste of something you’ll never have). He or she took two iPhone 6 Plus units and performed some serious surgery to build a Frankenstein that looks even better than you thought it would.

“I’ve seen a few posts on this subreddit of Black and Gold iPhone 6/ 6 plus’s but in those posts,” the user wrote in a post on Reddit. “They replace the screen, not the body, so they’re left with a sleek black screen, interrupted by a white button! There’s also been a few pictures of photoshopped versions oh the black face, with a gold body but renders don’t count!”

The Redditor continued, “Recently I took the risk of gutting my Space Grey iPhone 6 Plus and transferring it to a gold body. At first I was trying to think of a way to get the touch ID to have a gold ring, but after a few days I realized it looks much better without! Many people purchase the black iPhone for the black screen because when it’s off, it’s a clean black surface. I’m not saying a gold ring wouldn’t look cool but it’d distract from the sleek black surface. I’ve been very happy with the results over the past few days and I really wanted to share with other people that also might appreciate it and maybe try it out themselves! Cheers!”

Edward Snowden designed an iPhone case to prevent wireless snooping

Edward Snowden is still trying to combat smartphone radio surveillance three years after spilling the NSA’s secrets. With help from hacker Andrew“Bunnie” Huang, Snowden presented on Thursday designs at the MIT Media Lab for a case-like add-on device that monitors electrical signals sent to an iPhone’s internal antennas.

It looks like an external battery case with a small mono-color screen and is being described as an “introspection engine.” The device’s tiny probe wires have to attach to test points on the iPhone’s circuit board, which are accessible through the SIM card slot. The phone has two antennas that give off electrical signals and they’re used by its radios, including GPS and Bluetooth.

Apple fixes bug that takes over your iPhone or Mac – ESIST

Update your iPhone and Mac right now. This week, we learned that a nasty security vulnerability was discovered in Macs and iPhones that essentially lets someone take over your device simply by sending you a certain image in a text message or email. It’s very similar to the Stagefright vulnerability that plagued nearly a billion Android devices last year.

Apple fixed the flaw with software updates for Macs and iPhones that are available now. (Make sure you update to iOS 9.3.3 and Mac OS X 10.11.6. You should also update your Apple Watch or Apple TV.)

But there’s a deeper issue here than Apple patching a vulnerability. Such a quick fix could never happen on Android, and it’s one of the key reasons I always suggest choosing iPhone over Android.

When last year’s Stagefright vulnerability hit Android, far too many devices were unable to get the security update. Android partners like Samsung and HTC were able to push out an update for their newer devices, but most Android phones remained vulnerable for a long time.

AppAdvice.com: “Sherlock: Interactive Adventure is unlike anything else you’ve seen on iOS, or perhaps on any digital platform for that matter”.
148apps.com: “SHERLOCK: Interactive Adventure is first and foremost a well told story, but those interactive elements ensure it sticks in the mind a lot more so than a regular e-book”.
Wouter van Vugt, AppPicker.com: “SHERLOCK: Interactive Adventure is so much more than a book, even though you can treat it like a book if you want to. Everything about this book is perfect, and the extra options and interactivity are so well-developed, that it didn’t feel like I was reading a book anymore. It truly is the next level of reading and where I expect all the books to be in the future”.
‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧‧
SHERLOCK: Interactive Adventure is an app that will make you look at interactive books in a whole new light.
Allow us to introduce you to “The Red-Headed League”, the first book in this brand new interactive series about the famous detective.
Read, listen, embark on a journey, conduct an investigation, and discover the world of the great detective Sherlock Holmes for yourself. There is more to this story than just words and pictures. In place of simple illustrations, 3D animated images adorn its pages. You are no longer looking on from the outside: you are directly involved in the events taking place, and see the world through the eyes of Dr Watson.
Can you remember your favourite book? What was it that you loved so much about it? It might have been the gripping plot, the amazing characters, the incredible atmosphere… When we read a book, we picture everything taking place in colourful images. Sometimes illustrations help to get our imagination going. We enjoy looking at them, but sometimes this is simply not enough. After all, an illustration in a book is no more than a keyhole that we can peek through in order to catch a glimpse of the imaginary world created by the author.
But have you ever wanted to look further through the keyhole and open that secret door? We bet you have… wouldn’t it be interesting to find yourself standing right next to your favourite character, and to be able to explore their world? To touch all the objects in the room, and have a good look at them?
When we created SHERLOCK: Interactive Adventure, we threw open the doors to the world of Victorian England, and we are delighted to be able to invite you in with us. We have lovingly recreated the interiors and street scenes of nineteenth-century London.
We have created the perfect combination of a classic book, an audio book, a film, a historical study, and an illustrated encyclopaedia, incorporating elements of gameplay.

Dear Apple, please don’t make the best iPhone 7 features ‘Plus only’

The wait for the iPhone 7 is killing me. My bruised, worn and cracked iPhone 6 is barely hanging on and I’m not dumb enough to buy a new iPhone when I know the next model is right around the corner.

There have been many, many iPhone 7 rumors. The idealist me wants to be believe they’ll all be wrong and Apple will surprise us all with an iPhone 7 like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The realist in me, however, is pretty sure the iPhone 7 will be boring, and the real iPhone overhaul won’t come until next year.

This week’s rant isn’t going to focus on how similar the iPhone 7 will look to the iPhone 6S or how Apple will piss everyone off by removing the headphone jack, but how Apple might finally create a huge gulf between the “regular” 4.7-inch model and the 5.5-inch “Plus-sized” one.

The current differences

IMAGE: MY GIF HUNTS

For two generations (iPhone 6 and 6S), the only key differences between the 4.7- and 5.5-inch models has been screen size, battery life and optical image stabilization (OIS) for the camera.

Screen size isn’t a huge deal. Apple provides two options (three if you include the iPhone SE) — to please all hand and pocket sizes.

The Plus-sized iPhone 6 and 6S are physically larger and have room for a bigger battery. The Plus-sized phone lasts a day and a half, but charging every night on the 4.7-inch model isn’t really a deal-breaker, either. Plus, a battery case or battery pack easily makes up for the smaller battery.

Apple’s decision to make OIS exclusive to the Plus models, which helps reduce motion blur and generally makes photos and videos sharper, is also not the end of the world. Just learn to be a better human tripod instead.

IMAGE: REDBOUTIQ

Truthfully, after perfecting my human tripod stances, I can’t say I’ve ever thought “My iPhone photos would be better if only I had gotten the iPhone 6 Plus with OIS.”

Great photos are great not because of just the tech (though it certainly helps), but because of the photographer’s eye for composition and editing. And most of all: practice, practice, practice. Oh, and patience.

Bigger differences coming?

But when the iPhone 7 is announced in September and Apple’s keynote is over, fans are almost certainly going to have a very difficult decision to make.

Do you get the iPhone 7, which will likely come with a single camera and smaller screen, or do you get the iPhone 7 Plus, which will most likely come with a dual-camera setup on the back and a larger screen.

An artist’s concept rendering of the iPhone 7 and  7 Plus  based on rumors and reports.

IMAGE: MARTIN HAJEK

At this point, there are too many rumors and reports from purported Chinese factory leaks to well-sourced news publications for the iPhone 7 Plus to not come with two rear cameras.

The Plus model is going to have a superior camera to smaller iPhone just because of that extra camera lens, making “bigger is better” a reality.

Like LG and Huawei, Apple will make the case that two back cameras are better than one. How will the two rear cameras work? That’s still unknown.

Will they work like the LG G5’s dual cameras — one with a normal field of view and the other with an ultra-wide lens for capturing sweeping landscapes and groufies? That would be something I would pine for after loving it on the G5.

Or will Apple follow Huawei’s P9 and use one camera to capture a color image, the other to capture a monochrome image, and then use software to composite them into one really sharp photo?

Whatever Apple decides, the Plus model is going to have a superior camera to smaller iPhone just because of that extra camera lens, creating a scenario of: Bigger really is better.

If you’re like me, and you want the best smartphone camera but don’t want a phablet brick, you’re going to seriously miss out by not getting the Plus model.

And that’s not all. Apple could also make the new all-but-confirmed 256GB storage feature exclusive to the larger iPhone, too. Apple’s reasoning will probably be something like: “The iPhone 7 Plus takes higher-resolution photos. You’re going to need more storage to store them all.”

Buying an iPhone will get so much harder

As if picking an iPhone based on color (rose gold or not rose gold? Oh, the agony) wasn’t already the hardest part of the buying decision already (I kid), now we’re all going to have to decide if the camera is important enough for us to switch to a phablet? I feel you Darth Vader, I feel you:

//giphy.com/embed/xHwqspaBmfUMU?html5=true

via GIPHY

Of course the camera is going to be an important decision. It’s arguably the most important decision when buying a smartphone nowadays.

I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ll have to wait until Apple officially announces the iPhones to see if my life will be torn apart over a camera.

But that just means I’ll be tormenting myself this summer not knowing. FML. Dammit, Apple. Why do you gotta go and make this even harder?

Android full-disk encryption can be hacked | ESIST

We may have thought that Android is just as safe as the iPhone when it comes to encryption, but it looks like Google’s Android operating system has a critical flaw that can be exploited to decrypt a device. Even worse, while there are patches that can fix the issue, it seems that attackers can simply downgrade to a pre-patch state, and then decrypt a target device with ease.

Security researcher Gal Beniamini demonstrated this unexpected flaw in Android encryption, as Network World explains. Full-disk encryption is available on devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop or later, and the attack works on phones that are powered by Qualcomm processors.

Full-disk encryption (FDE) is supposed to encrypt the device with 128-bit device encryption. Decrypting should be impossible without knowing the PIN, password or gesture that protects the device.

The Device Encryption Key (DEK) found on the device is bound to that device through Android’s KeyMaster, which runs in the TrustZone. But Beniamini proved that he could brute-force his way into extracting the key off a locked phone, and he provided the tools necessary to do it on Github.

“The key derivation is not hardware bound,” Beniamini said. “Instead of using a real hardware key which cannot be extracted by software (for example, the SHK), the KeyMaster application uses a key derived from the SHK and directly available to TrustZone.”

He continued, “Since the key is available to TrustZone, OEMs could simply create and sign a TrustZone image which extracts the KeyMaster keys and flash it to the target device. This would allow law enforcement to easily brute-force the FDE password off the device using the leaked keys.”

It appears that millions of Android devices are still vulnerable. Qualcomm and Google have patched the issue with updates in May and January, but many users haven’t yet received the patch.

Even once the fix is installed, the patches will not offer full protection. “If an attacker can obtain the encrypted disk image (e.g. by using forensic tools), they can then ‘downgrade’ the device to a vulnerable version, extract the key by exploiting TrustZone, and use them to brute-force the encryption,” the researcher said. “Since the key is derived directly from the SHK, and the SHK cannot be modified, this renders all down-gradable devices directly vulnerable.”
