The latest technology achieves stunning processing speed

The 35-mm full-frame CMOS image sensor with back-illuminated structure enhances light collection efficiency, expands circuitry scale, and, with the help of a copper wiring layer that contributes to quicker data transfer, outputs data at very high speed, while minimizing noise to reveal fine details in every picture.

Color reproduction performance is dramatically enhanced, giving subjects that you capture more natural color that is faithful to how the colors look in real life. Skin tones in portraits, blue skies in landscapes, and vivid hues in still life images look very realistic as a result.
The latest high-precision stabilization uses stabilization unit and gyro sensors and algorithms to achieve a 5.0-step* shutter speed advantage in a system that compensates five types of camera shake with a wide range of lenses, and delivers excellent performance.

Enhanced AF tracking for swiftly moving subjects
The AF performance inherited from the α9 accounts for AF tracking with enhanced precision for continuous shooting of quick action. With faster image sensor readout, even complex subject motion can be tracked and sudden movements can be predicted with great precision, letting you capture decisive moments.
Advanced AF algorithms contribute to high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-3*, for more reliable autofocus in dark scenes.

693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF not only covers a wide area and responds instantly—it offers the benefits of high tracking performance even with an A-mount lens mounted via mount adaptor LA-EA3.*

The α7 III has Touch Focus function, and a Touch Pad function for you to fingertip-drag the focus frame intuitively while using the viewfinder
Use autofocus for stills while the focus area is magnified in the viewfinder/monitor, and magnify the view after autofocusing. This is ideal for focusing on a small area and other precision-focus photography.
AF tracking sensitivity for stills is adjustable in five steps. AF areas/points are changeable as you switch between horizontal and vertical orientation. Focus point settings can be assigned to custom buttons.
The α7 III can shoot in a continuous burst at up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking1 and up to 8fps burst shooting when shooting with live-view mode. The camera also supports silent shooting* at up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking at maximum resolution.

Fast, simple, intuitive AF: With the Touch Focus function. Simply touch the LCD screen at the point in the image where you want to focus when you’re shooting stills or movies. When you’re monitoring with the viewfinder, the Touch Pad function lets you slide a finger on the LCD screen to shift focus. You can also set preferences according to which eye and hand you want to use and how far to reach your finger.
For the first time in the RX series, the LCD monitor now incorporates the Touch Shutter, which allows you to intuitively activate the shutter simply by touching a point on the monitor. This makes it easier to shoot a scene when it might otherwise be difficult to press the shutter button, such as when shooting from high or low angles.
The tilt angle of the monitor has also been expanded, so you can tilt the monitor roughly 180° upwards and 90° downwards, to enable monitoring of the subject for selfies or even when you’re holding the camera high overhead above a crowd.
The new RX100 VI maintains the convenient pocket-sized design of the RX100 family and is equipped with a high-contrast 2.35 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. The RX100 VI includes professional movie functions such as; Picture Profile, S S-Log3/S-Gamut3, TC/UB (time code / user bit), Rec Control, Dual Video Recording, marker display function, etc. that have typically been available only in professional video cameras. You also have the choice of region setting between NTSC and PAL movie frame rates.
The RX100 VI features 4K HDR10 thanks to its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile which supports an instant HDR workflow. Movies recorded in HDR (HLG) played back on a compatible TV will appear true-to-life, with fewer blocked shadows or blown highlights, without the need for color grading. The BT.2020 color space is supported, providing a wider color gamut. Four gamma settings are provided (HLG, HLG1, HLG2, HLG3). The HLG setting conforms to ITU-R BT.2100. The HLG1, HLG2, and HLG3 gamma settings provide wider dynamic range while retaining the overall appearance of current cameras. The balance of dynamic range and noise produced by each setting is different, allowing selection to best match the scene being recorded.

Today, Sony has announced its brand new member of the RX series: the RX100 VI compact camera that’s sure to be new addition to your travel photography kit thanks to its impressive 8.3x optical zoom.
The camera’s most prominent feature is its stabilized 24-200mm, f/2.8-f/4.5 8.3X large aperture high magnification zoom lens that comes with a speedy 1.0-type 20.1MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a DRAM chip.

The RX100 VI features a new high magnification 24-200mm* F2.8 – F4.5 ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T lens that packs the power of both 24-70mm and 70-200mm1 lens into a singular compact design. This is achieved thanks to its unique design featuring two ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical glass elements and eight aspherical lens elements including four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses that work together seamlessly to deliver outstanding sharpness and image quality, from corner-to-corner at all focal lengths. The wide aperture throughout the zoom range delivers beautiful background defocus while the Optical SteadyShotTM image stabilization significantly reduces blurring.

The RX100 VI brings a new level of AF performance and speed to compact cameras. It’s equipped with the world’s fastest2 hybrid autofocus system that combines the respective advantages of focal-plane phase detection AF and contrast detection AF – ultimately enabling the camera to lock focus in as fast as 0.03 seconds**.

High speed focusing is a perfect complement to the dedicated 315 phase-detection AF points that covers approx. 65% of the image area of the sensor. With such wide-area high-density autofocus coverage, you can accurately focus on and capture your intended subject at high speed, even if it’s moving rapidly in unpredictable directions.
The RX100 VI employs Sony’s high-density tracking AF technology to ensure accurate, stable tracking performance throughout the 24-200mm1 range of the lens. This advanced technology leverages the benefits of focal-plane phase-detection sensors to concentrate AF points in a dense pattern around the subject location as its moving to keep subjects in continuous clear focus – even at high speeds.
Designed to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates the RX100 VI features a 1″ Exmor RS® stacked back illuminated CMOS sensor w/ DRAM and front-end LSI that works with the BIONZ X® image processing engine to enable continuous shooting speed at impressive 24fps* with AF/AE tracking at full 20.12MP resolution. Thanks to a large buffer, the RX100 VI can capture up to 233 images** at this high speed which can be viewed immediately after shooting. Viewfinder blackout between shots has been minimized in this high-speed shooting mode, which greatly improves the ability to follow fast action and capture the decisive moment.

This large 1” (1.0-type) stacked back illuminated Exmor RS® image sensor with DRAM chip not only enhances efficiency and speed of A/D conversion through its stacked structure and more circuit sections; it also realizes super-fast readout speed. Together with the new BIONZ X™ image processing engine, it allows for stunning 20.1-megapixels at up to 24fps3 continuous shooting, blazingly fast shutter speed of up to 1/32000 sec., breathtaking 4k movie and super slow-motion HFR (High Frame Rate) movie clip recording of up to 960fps (40x), not to mention remarkable low-light capability with a wide sensitivity range (ISO 80-12,800)6 with reduced noise.
The pocket-size RX100 VI features Clip 4K for short – up to 5 minute – 4K (QFHD:3840×2160) movie recording directly to SD memory card7 – ideal for everyday casual use. High quality 4k is achieved by the 1” Exmor RS® CMOS sensor with full pixel readout and no pixel binning – resulting in images that exhibit higher resolution and less moire and jaggies than typical 4K movies. Moreover, the XAVC S™ format is incorporated to maximize high-bitrate shooting up to 100 Mbps for professional quality video. The focal plane phase detection AF system allows for fast hybrid AF during video and ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4K movie shooting. AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system providing flexibility for focusing preferences.
*4K continuous recording is available for approx. 5 minutes. The duration available for the shooting may change according to shooting conditions. SDHC/SDXC memory card of Class 10 or higher is required for movie recording in XAVC S format. UHS-I (U3) SDHC/SDXC card is required for 100Mbps recording.
Built-in Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization technology – developed exclusively by Sony – pre-vents image blurring that can occur from hand-held still and movie shooting, especially in low light or at the far telephoto end of the zoom range. Image stabilization is equivalent to a faster shutter speed of 4.0 stops* at 200mm** telephoto, and ensures smooth, stable framing and excellent image quality.

Fast, simple, intuitive AF: With the Touch Focus function. Simply touch the LCD screen at the point in the image where you want to focus when you’re shooting stills or movies. When you’re monitoring with the viewfinder, the Touch Pad function lets you slide a finger on the LCD screen to shift focus. You can also set preferences according to which eye and hand you want to use and how far to reach your finger.
For the first time in the RX series, the LCD monitor now incorporates the Touch Shutter, which allows you to intuitively activate the shutter simply by touching a point on the monitor. This makes it easier to shoot a scene when it might otherwise be difficult to press the shutter button, such as when shooting from high or low angles.
The tilt angle of the monitor has also been expanded, so you can tilt the monitor roughly 180° upwards and 90° downwards, to enable monitoring of the subject for selfies or even when you’re holding the camera high overhead above a crowd.
The new RX100 VI maintains the convenient pocket-sized design of the RX100 family and is equipped with a high-contrast 2.35 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. With a single push, the EVF conveniently pops-up and automatically extends the eye-piece. It features optics with ZEISS® T* coating that greatly reduces reflections. It has the ability to deliver continuous live shooting at up to 8fps – making it easy to track fast moving subjects. This offers photographers a shooting experience with the immediacy of an optical viewfinder, while still offering all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder including a live preview of exposure, white balance and several other camera settings.
The Eye AF function has excellent tracking performance and a high degree of accuracy and stability as it automatically focuses on a subject’s eyes, even when the subject is looking down or away from the camera, or is in backlit scenes when the face of the subject is in partial darkness
The high speed – up to 1/32,000 sec. – Anti-Distortion Shutter, minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This blazingly fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels. Shooting at wide aperture with fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.
The RX100 VI includes professional movie functions such as; Picture Profile, S S-Log3/S-Gamut3, TC/UB (time code / user bit), Rec Control, Dual Video Recording, marker display function, etc. that have typically been available only in professional video cameras. You also have the choice of region setting between NTSC and PAL movie frame rates.
The RX100 VI features 4K HDR10 thanks to its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile which supports an instant HDR workflow. Movies recorded in HDR (HLG) played back on a compatible TV will appear true-to-life, with fewer blocked shadows or blown highlights, without the need for color grading. The BT.2020 color space is supported, providing a wider color gamut. Four gamma settings are provided (HLG, HLG1, HLG2, HLG3). The HLG setting conforms to ITU-R BT.2100. The HLG1, HLG2, and HLG3 gamma settings provide wider dynamic range while retaining the overall appearance of current cameras. The balance of dynamic range and noise produced by each setting is different, allowing selection to best match the scene being recorded.
Easily connect with NFC or QR code (for non-NFC devices) to smartphones or tablets with the built-in Wi-Fi® and Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile™ application available for Android™ and iOS platforms. Control your camera or transfer files to your device for fast and easy sharing without the need of a computer. When you’re done, you can use the free software to sort and manage your stills and video with PlayMemories Home™ or view and edit your RAW file with either Sony’s Imaging Edge software or Capture One Express (for Sony).

Ideal for vlogging, travel photography and video shooting, self-portraits and much more, the new VCT-SGR is a vertically-oriented shooting grip that attaches to Sony’s RX0 and RX100 series of cameras via Multi/Micro USB Terminal. It is extremely compact and lightweight, and can adjust angles up 70 degrees or down to 100 degrees to capture different perspectives including high-angle shots, low-angle shots and self-portraits. The grip features several buttons at the top of the grip including shutter release, REC stop/start and zoom functionality, allowing for easy fingertip control for both right and left-handed usage. Additionally, the bottom of the grip can be spread-out and used as a tripod, making it an ideal accessory for group photos or low-light shooting conditions to avoid camera shake when shooting at slower shutter speeds.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K uses the same MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount as the original Pocket Cinema Camera so you can use the lenses you already have! The MFT lens mount was designed specifically for smaller camera bodies with shorter flange focal distance. This means you can get high quality professional lenses that are much smaller than ever before! The MFT mount is extremely flexible and allows for different lens adapters. You can get adapters for PL, C, EF and more, so you can use lenses from manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica and even Panavision!

When it comes to recording, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K gives you 3 kinds of media to choose from. Images can be recorded on to standard SD cards, faster UHS-II cards or CFast 2.0 cards. High definition video can be recorded using regular inexpensive SD cards. Higher performance UHS-II cards can be used for recording Ultra HD in ProRes at up to 60 frames per second and RAW at up to 30 frames per second. CFast cards can record 12-bit RAW at all supported frame rates. For longer recording times, you can also record directly to an external SSD or flash disk using the built in USB-C Expansion Port! Best of all, there’s nothing proprietary. The files will work with all professional post production software. You can even mount the media cards on your computer and start editing directly from them using the included DaVinci Resolve Studio software!

The Rode Microphones VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a DSLR camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera’s shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode’s boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances.
The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticized suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticized suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.
An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8″ (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9 Volt batteries (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

California is preparing to join several other states with a new Right to Repair bill, which will require smartphone manufacturers to provide repair information, replacement parts, and diagnostic tools to product owners and independent repair shops.
California Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman this afternoon announced plans to introduce the new California Right to Repair Act. Eggman says the bill will provide consumers with the freedom to choose a repair shop of their choice.

“The Right to Repair Act will provide consumers with the freedom to have their electronic products and appliances fixed by a repair shop or service provider of their choice, a practice that was taken for granted a generation ago but is now becoming increasingly rare in a world of planned obsolescence,” Eggman said.
Mark Murray, Executive Director of Californians Against Waste said smartphone manufacturers and home appliance makers are “profiting at the expense of our environment and our pocketbooks” while Kit Walsh, Senior Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said the new bill is “critical to protect independent repair shops and a competitive market for repair,” which will lead to “better service and lower prices.”
In addition to California, 17 other states have already introduced similar Right to Repair legislation, including Washington, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Several states began introducing Right to Repair legislation early last year, and the Right to Repair movement has continued on since then, spurred by Apple’s iPhone throttling controversy.
Since last year, Apple has been lobbying against Right to Repair bills in various states, as have several other technology companies. In Nebraska, for example, Apple said approving Right to Repair would turn the state into a “mecca for bad actors” making it “easy for hackers to relocate to Nebraska.” Other arguments from tech companies and appliance manufacturers have suggested Right to Repair bills would compromise device security and safety.
Right to Repair bills are heavily endorsed by repair outlets like iFixit, independent repair shops, and consumer advocacy groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
In California specifically, the Right to Repair bill is particularly interesting because as Motherboard points out, there are strong repairability laws already in place. California Civil Code Section 1793.03 states that companies must offer parts for repair for at least seven years after a product is released, which is why on Apple’s vintage and obsolete products list, it lists California as the sole state where consumers can continue to get repairs on vintage products.
Apple currently requires customers who have Apple products in need of repair to visit an Apple retail store, mail a product to an Apple repair facility, or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to receive support for their devices. Repairs from third-party repair shops that are not Apple Authorized Service Providers can void a device’s warranty.
Apple’s current flagship iPhone, the iPhone X, earned a repairability score of 6 from repair site iFixit. Repairs on the device require a special Apple-specific screw driver, delicate cables are often in the way and are difficult to replace, and Apple’s waterproofing makes repairs complicated. Other Apple products, like MacBooks, have much lower repairability scores.

Chimera experiment

ESA’s next mission, the miniature GomX-4B, includes a piggyback experiment to test how well everyday commercial computer memories perform in the radiation-soaked environment of space.
Ready to be launched from China this Friday, GomX-4B was built from six standard 10 cm CubeSat units by GomSpace in Denmark.
Its main goal is to test radio links between satellites and micropropulsion, but GomX-4B also carryies a small, cheap but important secondary experiment: a single 10x10cm electronics board with 12 computer flash memories, made up of three examples of four different types, each purchased for a few euros.
Known as Chimera, this experiment will test how such ‘commercial-off-the-shelf’ parts cope with bombardments of high-energy electrically charged atomic particles from the Sun and deep space. A specially space-qualified monitoring chip will record the performance of the dozen memories.

“Interaction with charged particles can induce ‘bit flips’ in computer memory, introducing errors,” explains Chimera team member Tomasz Szewczyk.
“We perform ground testing and software modelling to understand how different components are affected by radiation, but nothing beats real testing in space.
“There’s an increasing push to use more off-the-shelf parts in orbit because they are theoretically cheaper and more capable than space-designed parts, but there are question marks over their reliability.
Space radiation
“For instance, different batches of the same part may have radically different reactions to charged particles, based on small variations in the raw materials or the manufacturing process. That’s why we are flying three versions of each memory.”
Once it became clear there was a chance to fly on GomX-4B, Chimera was built and tested in a year, with ESA’s data engineers working together with quality assurance experts. The board was assembled by certified ESA engineers, with environmental testing for launch and space conditions using shaker tables and thermal–vacuum chambers.
“ESA missions have already been using a lot of different off-the-shelf parts, certainly across the last two decades,” comments computer scientist Gianluca Furano. “All the mass memory of currently flying missions is made up of purely commercial flash devices, for instance.
“And right now there are some component areas where we simply don’t have any space-qualified alternative. The problem is that off-the-shelf parts need to undergo a lot of testing in order to be sure they’ll meet the necessary performance and reliability, and this can mean their per-unit cost actually ends up much higher.”

In addition, the capabilities of space-qualified parts typically lag several generations behind off-the-shelf parts, which benefit from the doubling of transistors per chip every two years or less.
One approach is to take commercial devices and devise methods to best use them for space applications, often with the help of manufacturers. For instance, programmable chips known as called ‘field programmable gate arrays’ can have error detection and correction mechanisms added.
“The more knowledge we have of how these parts behave in space operations, then the more we can develop effective countermeasures,” adds Gianluca.
“Terrestrial industry is becoming interested in such solutions as well. For large data centres using massive amount of memory, cosmic rays already set reliability limits. Such effects will also become a factor within chips for safety-critical applications, such as self-driving cars.”
“Flying technology experiments on CubeSats is opening up a plethora of opportunities to access space faster, and more cost effectively,” adds ESA’s Ali Zadeh. “The multidisciplinary nature of such experiments result in exciting collaborations across our Agency.”
