A Very Smart Speaker

Your daily selection of the latest crowdfunding projects!

According to Yanko Design

Even at first glance it is clear to see why The Wave is an award-winning (red dot 2018) design; the striking design and presence that it holds within the room make for a highly desirable product. This Voice-Controlled Smart Speaker houses a wide variety of features that offer various services, these are all achieved through Clova, an AI platform.

The rather unique cone shape that has been used ensures for optimized sound performance, this means that the user can experience the best that the 360 degree, omnidirectional sound has to offer! This simple yet visually interesting form also makes the Wave fit a wide range of interior decors and thanks to the 5000mAh battery, it can be used wirelessly for five hours, therefore not limiting it to just the one room.

Due to it featuring voice control the physical interface can be extremely minimal; just six touch sensitive buttons are present on the top of the device, creating a simple and fuss-free addition to the home.

UPstage 360 is the smartest and the best-performing speaker that combines a 3-way system, 40Hz-40kHz ultra-wide frequency range, and ultimate Hi-Res sound quality in 360° enveloping soundstage.

Integrating smart home connect with audiophile-grade fidelity, UPstage 360 fills every corner with the most authentic, life-like sound. Walk around. Dance with it. Wherever you are, feel the room-filling sound.

UPstage 360 projects output evenly in 360° omni-directional soundstage, fills the space with premium Hi-Res audio, and creates a listening “sweet zone”, where the same exquisite sound will be heard at every position.

Unlike conventional speakers, which deliver directional output and chain listeners to a limited area for good sound, UPstage 360 creates revolutionary, consistent and uniform sound dispersion, and envelopes the whole space with utmost clear sound.

UPstage 360 utilizes a patented ball-cone reflection structure made of aluminum alloy to create optimized reflection curves that radiate consistent sound waves dispersion and avoid interference with different frequency ranges.

Spherical diffusers evenly transmit the high frequencies 360˚ and the cone-disc structure enhances the dispersion for mid and low frequencies.
Spherical diffusers evenly transmit the high frequencies 360˚ and the cone-disc structure enhances the dispersion for mid and low frequencies.

Frequency response measured from 4 different angles presents identical SPL responses, presenting listeners with the same sound quality everywhere.

Listening Location Comparison:

UPstage 360 is equipped with an exclusive 3-way integration of 8 drivers and tri-amplification. Covering the ultra-wide frequency range of 40Hz-40kHz, it fully reproduces every detailed note and brings you a dynamic, realistic audio experience.

To obtain the stunningly tight and authoritative bass of UPstage 360, we used patented piston wave passive radiators made of natural rubber to maximize the efficiency of air and space in the cabinet, pushing deep thumping bass of 40 Hz with two 3” woofers and four passive bass radiators.

Hear more. Feel more! Re-explore your favorite music with every detail accurately reproduced in Hi-Res Audio—UPstage 360 gives you the distortion-free sound experience with <0.02% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). Image music reproduction as if seeing a Hi-Res photo, and hear every note from delicate opera to a raucous live concert.

UPstage 360 enables internal docking with Echo Dot and ChromeCast, and it is compatible with various online streaming for Spotify, Apple Music, and more. You can also pair with Bluetooth, or wire-in with AUX-in to connect with other systems.

UPstage 360 has built-in ambiance sound therapy function that combines natural sounds with often cited frequencies. These specially blended mixes of a river, forest, crystal music, and mantra chanting will help listeners stay calm, focused, and relaxed for better sleep quality.

UPstage 360 is engineered by Soundmatters. With 30 years of experience in acoustic design and micro-audiophile speaker technology originally from NASA, Soundmatters designed popular acoustic products, including foxL, named a Top 10 Gadgets of the Year by Time Magazine, and the blockbuster selling Jawbone Jambox.

Additionally, we partnered with TB Speaker, the highly regarded speaker manufacturer, to ensure quality production. Working with these experienced and reliable partners enables UPstage 360 to deliver the latest in electroacoustic technology.

Connect UPstage 360 via Bluetooth and wireless streaming. You can stream for various platforms and adjust the volume from your device or from the speaker buttons.

Utilizing proprietary technologies, exclusive acoustic arrangement, and precise calibration, we balanced 8 drivers and 3-way audio range to deliver the most harmonic and authentic sound performance. Each driver is isolated in their own sealed chamber to enhance sound output, maintaining 40Hz-40kHz and loudness capabilities of 95dB SPL.

UPstage 360 extends out to 40 kHz to fully reproduce the details in Hi-Res recordings, which cover the frequency up to 40 kHz and include ultrasound frequencies that improve our perception of sound quality.

With rigid structure and patented dispersion architecture, we avoided frequency resonance, created <0.02% THD, and made the crossover at 150 Hz and 3 kHz to deliver an immaculate sound.

6 of the best iPhone speaker docks

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to TechRadar – All the latest technology news

Years have passed since iPhone speaker docks were in the spotlight. These days they’re barely even the equivalent of a Z-list celeb who might turn up on a reality TV show where contestants are forced to eat insects.

Not everyone likes to stream their music, though. And if that’s you, there are still several iPhone speaker units with wired Lightning dock ports to keep you happy.

Some are from big names like Bowers & Wilkins and Pure. Others are made by companies you may not have encountered before. But all are worth a look if you’re not ready to go “full wireless” just yet.

Note: we’ve ranked these from cheapest to most expensive according to prices at time of writing.

  • Need a new phone to go with your dock? Check out our iPhone 8 review and all the latest news on the iPhone 9

If you want a dock for your bedroom rather than one that needs to act as your main music player, the KitSound XDock 4 Plus is worth a look. It’ll sit happily on a small bedside table and charge your phone to stop you needing to find the Lightning cable that seems to disappear under your bed each evening.

The KitSound XDock 4 Plus has small 3W speakers so isn’t going to make the walls shake, but that’s not the point.

It has a big, clear clock display, acts as an alarm clock and doesn’t cost too much. There’s also Bluetooth for tunes while your iPhone is in your pocket. Bear in mind the radio side of this Lightning socket clock radio is limited, though, with just FM, no DAB.

Here’s one for the readers who live in the UK. The IWANTIT IBTLIA17 isn’t subtle or immensely refined, but it does get you a lot of speaker for not too much money.

Like the iPhone speaker docks of old, this is a large block of a unit with relatively big drivers. There are mid/treble drivers to each side and a dedicated subwoofer in the center with two bass ports. If you’re out for room-filling bass on a budget, the IBTLIA17 should be on your list.

There’s a remote control in the box, but the speaker also has direct control buttons on the top plate, by the Lighting dock. As you’d hope in a recent docking model, there’s also Bluetooth for wireless streaming from non-iPhone mobiles.

Pure Contour

Pure has tried to make sure the Contour D1 suits every iPhone owner. It even comes with a 30-pin adaptor as well as a Lightning one, to fit in the dock tray. This lets you attach your ancient iPhone or iPod Classic, if your house hasn’t upgraded to modern-age iPhones.

The dock pushes back into the main speaker unit when not in use – when you’re using the mini jack around the rear, or Bluetooth connectivity, for instance.

You can also wirelessly stream to the D1. But, like most Pure gear, radio is still a key draw. There’s DAB as well as “classic” FM. It’s just a shame the display is a bit dim and uninspired.

Still, the dock packs a remote, it’s a breeze to set up and ticks plenty of boxes, as well as sounding rich, crisp and clear, without lacking bass.

Add a little sunshine to your mornings with this brilliantly colored radio alarm dock. Its leatherette detailing surrounds a pair of classic retro cream white grilles, a clear OLED display and responsive function buttons, which include DAB, DAB+ and FM radio, dual alarms and snooze.

A closer look reveals a wooden inner chassis which does wonders for the audio reproduction and offers a wide, surprisingly expansive range – crisp and loud, without tinniness or boom.

Available in a wide range of colors all of which come with an auxiliary out to connect any other devices you have, the VQ looks ace on any bedside cabinet – whatever your wallpaper choice.

Bowers and Wilkins

The Bowers & Wilkins Z2 is one of the last audio-fan iPhone docks you can still buy. But you’d better be quick as nowadays you’ll only find it “recertified” or “refurbished”. These aren’t being made anymore.

The rounded glass-reinforced compact enclosure of this space-agey dock offers plenty of bass, a decent soundstage and good dispersion around any medium-sized room.

Once you’ve linked your device, the Z2 performs admirably, with DSP that keeps distortion to an absolute minimum regardless of how high you crank up the volume.

Let’s finish off with something a little mad. The Jarre AeroBull HD is one of the most recent, and probably one of the last, dedicated Lightning speaker docks. It’s shaped like a sunglasses-wearing French Bulldog and, at 10kg and over half a meter tall, it’s larger and heavier than the real thing too.

The Lightning port sits on top of the little guy’s head, making sense of the AeroBull HD’s height. And by his backside you get a 3.5mm aux socket.

This isn’t a high-tech multi-room Wi-Fi speaker, it just uses Bluetooth and the dock. However, that’s not really the idea. This is as much lounge furniture as an iPhone dock, and it has the price to match.

The Jarre AeroBull HD has a 2.1 driver array, with small units in the dog’s glasses and a subwoofer to the rear. Don’t expect sound to match the high price if you’re an unapologetic audiophile, but at this point this is one of the best-sounding Lightning docks you can get. Even if it is a bloody dog.

Amazon to control 70 percent of the voice-controlled speaker market this year

Amazon is dominating the voice-controlled speaker market, according to a new forecast from eMarketer out this morning. The maker of the Echo-branded speakers will have 70.6 percent of all voice-enabled speaker users in the U.S. this year – well ahead of Google Home’s 23.8 percent and other, smaller players like Lenovo, LG, Harmon Kardon, and Mattel, who combined only account for 5.6 percent of users.

The new report backs up another from VoiceLabs released in January, which also found that Amazon was leading the voice-first device market, thanks to Echo’s popularity.

While the market itself is not expected to be a winner-take-all scenario, competitors like Amazon and Google will win entire homes, as most consumers have said they wouldn’t consider buying a competing device once they already own one voice-controlled speaker.

Emarketer says Amazon’s share will fall somewhat as Google gets its Home devices into more consumers’ hands, but Amazon will lead the market for the “foreseeable future.”

This year, 35.6 million Americans will use a voice-activated device at least once per month, the firm estimates – a 128.9 percent over 2016. (The company is not counting voice assistants on smartphones in this part of its forecast – only those digital assistants on standalone voice-enabled speakers.)

However, the wider voice assistant market – which includes Siri, Alexa, Google Now and Microsoft’s Cortana operating on any device –  is expected to grow 23.1 percent this year, eMarketer says. In 2017, 60.5 million U.S. users will use one of these assistants at least once per month. That’s over a quarter (27.5%) of smartphone users, or nearly one in five Americans, the report notes.

Usage is heaviest among a younger demographic – those between 25 and 34, make up 26.3 percent of virtual assistant users. In addition, more than one-third of millennials (33.5%) will use virtual assistants in 2017.

“Older millennials are the core users of virtual assistants, mainly due to their demand for functionality over entertainment,”  eMarketer’s VP of Forecasting, Martín Utreras, says.

Amazon doesn’t disclose Echo sales figures, but said in February that Echo family sales are up over 9x compared to last season. VoiceLabs estimated in January there are over 7 million devices in customers’ homes; Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) around the same time put it higher at 8.2 million; and Morgan Stanley believes it was over 11 million before the 2017 holidays.

Amazon’s strategy with Alexa is to allow the assistant to extend beyond just voice-controlled speakers it manufacturers. The company has also included the assistant in its Amazon mobile shopping app, and has made it available to third-parties for use in their own hardware and software applications.

With its dominant market share, Amazon’s Alexa could bring in $10 billion in revenues by 2020, RBC Capital Markets had also estimated in March. This figure included Alexa device sales, voice shopping sales, and platform revenue. The firm forecasted there will be 60 million Alexa devices sold in 2020, bringing the install base to 128 million.

Make a PIR speaker system

I enjoy projects that can be made using items from around the home. Add a Raspberry Pi and a few lines of code, and great joy can be had from producing something smart, connected and/or just plain silly.

The concept of the IoT Smart Lobby Welcoming Music System fits into this category. Take a speaker, add a Raspberry Pi and a PIR sensor (both staples of any maker household, and worthwhile investments for the budding builder), and you can create a motion-sensor welcome system for your home or office.

by Naran

THE NARAN BUILD

IoT makers Naran have published their Smart Lobby build on Instructables, where you’ll find all the code and information you need to get making. You’ll also find their original walkthrough of how to use their free Prota OS for Raspberry Pi, which allows you to turn your Pi into a Smart Home hub.

Their build allows you to use Telegram Bot to control the music played through their speaker. The music begins when movement is sensed, and you can control what happens next.

It’s a great build for playing information for visitors or alerting you to an intrusion.

TIM PEAKE WELCOMING COMMITTEE

A few months back, I made something similar in the lobby at Pi Towers:  I hid a sensor under our cardboard cutout of ESA astronaut Tim Peake. Visitors walking into the lobby triggered the sensor, and were treated to the opening music from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Sadly, with the meeting rooms across the lobby in constant use, the prank didn’t last long.

If you’re curious, the Christmas tree should be a clue as to why Tim is dressed like a nativity angel.

THE HOMEBREW EDITION

If you’re like me, you learn best by doing. Our free resources allow you to develop new skills as you build. You can then blend the skills you have learned to create your own interesting projects. I was very new to digital making when I put together the music sensor in the lobby. The skills I had developed by following step-by-step project tutorials provided the foundations for something new and original.

Why not make your own welcoming system? The process could teach you new skills, and develop your understanding of the Raspberry Pi. If you’d like to have a go, I’d suggest trying out the Parent Detector. This will show you how to use a PIR sensor with your Raspberry Pi. Once you understand that process, try the Burping Jelly Baby project. This will teach you how to tell your Raspberry Pi when to play an MP3 based on a trigger, such as the poke of a finger or the detection of movement.

From there, you should have all the tools you need to make a speaker system that plays an MP3 when someone or something approaches. Why not have a go this weekend? If you do, tell us about your final build in the comments below.
