None of us have been to a galaxy far, far away. But all of us can relate to the discomfort experienced when you say say something awkward on the job — even if none of us work for someone who can send us to the icy planet Hoth.
Epic Games on Wednesday, in collaboration with ILMxLAB and NVIDIA, offered a sneak peek at gaming’s cinematic future with a stunning, witty demo featuring a pair of bungling stormtroopers who wind up out in the cold, literally.
The brief demo, titled “Reflections,” was shown during an Epic event held across the street from the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, stunning gamers, press and industry insiders.
Running on our just announced NVIDIA RTX ray-tracing technology and NVIDIA GPUs, the demo offered a glimpse at gaming graphics that, to the untrained eye, are indistinguishable from movies. NVIDIA RTX brings real-time, cinematic-quality rendering to content creators and game developers.
“Now is a really exciting time for gamers and game developers,” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said in advance of the demo.
The demo showcased the graphics technique called ray tracing. Long used to generate cinematic special effects for Hollywood blockbusters, the technique relies on tracing the path of rays of light as they bounce off surfaces inside a scene. (See “What’s the Difference Between Ray Tracing and Rasterization?”)
The result is incredibly realistic graphics rendering that has been, until now, traditionally too computationally intensive for real-time use. That’s changing, though.
“There’s no other way to achieve the realism we need,” Mohen Leo, director of content and platform strategy at ILMxLAB, said of ray tracing just before launching the “Reflections” demo.
Epic’s team along with ILMxLAB and NVIDIA began work on the demo in early December using our NVIDIA DGX Station, equipped with four Tesla V100 GPUs, Epic’s Unreal Engine and our NVIDIA RTX ray-tracing technology.
NVIDIA has also announced that the GameWorks SDK will add a ray-tracing denoiser module, helping game developers take advantage of new capabilities. This updated SDK, which is coming soon, includes support for ray-traced area light shadows, glossy reflections and ambient occlusion.
The GDC demonstration — which showcases techniques such as ray-traced reflections, ray-traced area light shadows and ray-traced ambient occlusion for characters — is just one piece of the technology story around ray tracing that will be unfolding this week at the conference.

“Look, Kratos needed to change.”
Creative director Cory Barlog has a deep history with God of War. He served as art director on the original 2005 game, then as creative director for its acclaimed sequel. He even wrote Ghost of Sparta, the well-regarded PSP game developed by Ready At Dawn.
Living with Kratos for so many years gave Barlog a deep perspective on the character and his motivations. “We intentionally made him loathed, an antihero. Now we’re trying to make him a character you care about.”
But how? Barlog knew fans wouldn’t buy into a sudden tonal shift for the character. “It’s hard to believe somebody who’s a bad guy suddenly wants to change. You need a reason.”
That reason, Balrog reckoned, was family. By tasking Kratos with responsibility for another life, a more nuanced, sympathetic character could gradually emerge — thus multiplying the dramatic potential.
Enter Atreus, Kratos’s son and in-game companion. “Atreus is the mirror that shines on Kratos that makes him realize that he needs to change…. Atreus will pull the humanity out. Kratos will be shown his own humanity, and he’ll figure out how to embrace it.”
Barlog was adamant that Atreus always be a benefit to the player, never a detriment. “It is not an escort mission. You never have to take care of him.”
“It is not an escort mission. You never have to take care of him.”
Crafting an effective companion took an enormous group effort, and plenty of research. “We looked at everything,” Gameplay Engineering Lead Jeet Shroff explained. “For me personally, Elizabeth [Bioshock Infinite] and Ellie [The Last of Us] stood out as areas of inspiration.”
“We were cautious about what it would mean to introduce a companion character to a game of this scale,” Shroff elaborated. “Atreus will never steal a kill from you… he will always complement what you are doing.”
Barlog is fully aware that some players may view Atreus with skepticism. “There are times when [kids] can be a little annoying. Then they start to endear themselves to you.”
“Players in the playtests… they come in saying they hate children, this kid is such an annoyance, I don’t want him.”
“Halfway through, they say ‘he’s alright.’ All the way at end, they say ‘I really wanted to hate this kid, but he’s my favorite character in the game.’”
“I really wanted to hate this kid, but he’s my favorite character in the game.”
Indeed, based on my recent hands-on time with the game, Kratos’s son Atreus stood out as one of the game’s best new elements. His quips and arrows land with equal impact, and he never comes off as a burden or a chore. He points out secrets, proactively disables enemies, and remarks on the changing battlefield conditions.
And, tellingly, he seems to have the same anger management issues as dear old dad.
“There’s this fantastic arc that they go on that’s paralleling so many of our own lives,” Barlog teased. “Our own relationships with our children, or our parents. It’s so universal.”
I expect the relationship between Kratos and Atreus to be a key highlight when the final game finally lands on PS4 April 20.

League of Legends now has voice chat
Voice chat has finally come to League of Legends, and my worst fears have been realised. The feature is official ready to use on the live server as of today.
It’s taken Riot nearly ten years to implement voice chat, which is a blessing in itself, but the road towards it has been a rocky one. Originally, in keeping with feedback from the community, Riot stated that they would not be bringing voice chat to the game in an attempt to alleviate toxicity, a stance they maintained for several years.
Last year however, Riot performed an abrupt u-turn on the issue, announcing that voice chat would eventually come to the game, and suggesting that its previous stance on the feature was wrong. Over the course of the past year, various plans for League of Legends voice chat were rolled out, culminating in the launch of the current version.
League of Legends voice chat can be accessed via UI menus both in-game and in-client. There’ll be a small microphone in the bottom-right corner (by the camera lock item next to the mini-map if you’re in-game). The menu will allow you to control the volume of everyone in the chat, or opt out entirely. It’s worth noting that it’s currently only available for premade groups (who have never heard of Skype or Discord), and Riot are unlikely to roll it out to other groups for the forseeable future.

In the process of rebooting the franchise with bold, new concepts, the multimedia developer Helios Interactive pitched a more mature game called Spyro’s Kingdom: an MMORPG where players could assume their own dragon and take on quests from Spyro himself, who ruled over the land as the king. Playable alpha builds and proofs of concept were developed, but those ideas eventually gave way to the toys-to-life Skylanders series. Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick approved the general concept, which was passed along to Toys For Bob. Activision later encouraged the studio to remove online multiplayer and make the figures necessary to play the game, meaning that custom dragons had to go with the Skylanders we know today.
A more “realistic” MMO emulating Middle-earth life, MMO for Stargate, and more are addressed in the video, which you can check out below.

Brilliant! There’s a pub in Huddersfield which offers a £30 bar tab to anyone who can get a Victory Royale in Fortnite, there and then. Reckon you could do it on a projected screen with everybody watching?
The place is a student pub called Warehouse, and the person who dreamt up the idea is manager Alex Coe, who I spoke to on the phone this afternoon. He’s been running the Fortnite challenge for three weeks now and it’s bringing in the punters. “It’s been more popular than I thought,” he said.
How many winners do you think he’s had?
“We’ve had about 300 games played but only two wins,” he said. Two! Two! Come on, you can do better than that!
“We do it on the projector you see,” he added, “so it makes it a little bit more difficult.” Pfft! It’s no excuse.
Coe explained it’s actually £30 for the first person to win each week, although he’s thinking about upping this to anyone who wins, if his budget allows.
It’s not the only game Warehouse offers, there’s Rocket League and FIFA as well, but Fortnite is the only game with a prize attached to it. And as far as Alex Coe is aware, no other pubs are doing similar. A couple of other sites in the Stonegate Pub empire, which Warehouse belongs to, have tried doing it but apparently without much success.
So, if you’re in the Huddersfield area, what are you waiting for? And have a lovely weekend!

World of Tanks developers plan to continue for “another 20 or 30 years”
Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube
With the 1.0 launch of World of Tanks, any doubts about the success of Wargaming’s free-to-play combat title have long since been erased. But don’t expect development to end any time soon. In fact, the developers have plans to continue supporting the game for the next three decades.
Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi tells us that early in development, the team thought the game might be around for two or three years, or maybe a bit longer. “Five is the magic number, after five we would have to do something different. It would die off, people would stop liking tanks, et cetera.”
Now we’re coming up on the eighth year since World of Tanks sprung onto the scene, so those early estimates were obviously a little to conservative. Kislyi says “It’s gonna be another 20 or 30 years. That’s what, now, we realized.”
It’s a base of loyal players that have given Wargaming confidence that they can continue expanding World of Tanks in the years (and decades) to come. “We have a so-called ‘core’ – these people who never leave. They like the game after ten weeks and then they stay forever. It’s like watching the Simpsons, right? 30 years now. Or South Park. For us, it’s a very clear signal: keep going.”
It’s an ambitious plan for the game, but if any title is successful enough to justify that confidence, it’s World of Tanks. For your reference, current thirty year old games are titles like Mega Man 2, Pool of Radiance, and Phantasy Star. A living game like EverQuest has already lasted close to twenty – though it’s certainly winding down – but can a game truly last three decades? I guess we’ll find out, assuming we live that long.

Nintendo in Nindies Showcase today announced 16 games from indie developers are coming to the Switch throughout 2018. Seven of the titles are either launching first on Switch or are platform exclusive.
The following is a list of the games:
Mark of the Ninja Remastered (fall 2018)
Fantasy Strike (summer 2018)
Just Shapes and Beats (launching first on Switch, summer 2018)
Garage (launching first on Switch, spring 2018)
Pool Panic (launching as Switch exclusive, 2018)
Bomb Chicken (launching first on Switch, summer 2018)
Lumines Remastered (spring 2018)
Reigns and Reigns: Her Majesty (spring 2018)
Light Fall (launching first on Switch, spring 2018)
West of Loathing (launching as Switch exclusive, spring 2018)
Pode (spring 2018)
The Messenger (summer 2018)
Bad North (launching first on Switch, summer 2018)
Our Take Banner Saga and Mark of the Ninja coming to the portable platform are highlights from a decent Nindies Showcase. Light Fall, with its aesthetics and platformer difficulty that are akin to Ori and the Blind Forest, is perhaps the most interesting of the newer games. It’s also great that Switch owners can look forward to these games this year.

Visit source to view media: Dragon Ball Legends Gameplay Super Saiyan Battles On The Go
A new Dragon Ball fighting game has been announced for mobile devices. It’s called Dragon Ball Legends, and it’s coming to iOS and Android this year.
Legends features a combination of 3D fighting and card game systems. It also offers PvP; you can play against other players around the world in real-time, each bringing three characters to the fight.
Bandai Namco says the game’s controls have been customized for mobile, so rather than lengthy, complex combinations you see in console fighting games, Legends sees you tapping various cards at the bottom of the screen to execute attacks and string together combos. Tapping a yellow card, for example, will trigger a ranged attack, while red will activate a melee attack, and blue a special move.
Series stalwarts such as Goku, Piccolo, Frieza, and Nappa have been confirmed for Dragon Ball Legends, with more details expected very soon. For more on the game, check out Bandai Namco’s presentation from GDC above.
Let’s hope Legends is as good as the most recent Dragon Ball game. FighterZ came to PS4, Xbox One, and PC last year to critical acclaim. In our Dragon Ball FighterZ review, critic Peter Brown wrote: “FighterZ is complex and distinct enough to be enjoyed by fighting game competitors, but there’s no question that it’s been designed to tap into the hearts of Dragon Ball’s most dedicated fans, and no doubt those same qualities will win people over who’ve never given the series a chance. Where past games attempted to get there through huge character rosters and deliberately predictable trips down memory lane, FighterZ has bottled the essence of what makes the series’ characters, animation, and sense of humor so beloved and reconfigured it into something new: a Dragon Ball fighting game that can go toe-to-toe with the best of the genre.”

Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot can finally relax
The French video game company signed an agreement on Tuesday with Vivendi for that company to sell all 30,489,300 shares of Ubisoft. The move seems to bring to a conclusion Vivendi’s years long interest in wresting control away from Ubisoft through a possible hostile takeover.
At stake was, on the one hand, Vivendi’s desire to gain some control over the operations and direction of Ubisoft starting in 2016, and on the other, the publisher’s long-standing desire to remain independent.
In 2016, Guillemot told the Wall Street Journal that he wouldn’t relax while Vivendi still had any shares in the company. At the time Vivendi owned 23 percent of the company. Under French law, the amount of stock a person or company can hold is capped at 30 percent. If that amount passes the 30 percent mark, they are obliged to launch a public offer on the company.
The agreement announced Tuesday has a number of groups purchasing up the more than 30 million shares including two investor groups, a share buy-back by Ubisoft and China’s Tencent, which also owns part of Epic Games and all of League of Legends developer Riot Games.Following the deal, Vivendi will no longer hold any shares in Ubisoft, and has committed not to acquire any shares in Ubisoft for 5 years, according to a press release.
Interestingly, part of the deal also has Ubisoft and Tencent forming a strategic partnership that will “significantly accelerate the reach of Ubisoft franchises in China in the coming years.”
CEO and founder Guillemot calls the deal great news in a prepared statement.
“The investment from new long-term shareholders in Ubisoft demonstrates their trust in our future value creation potential, and Ubisoft’s share buy-back will be accretive to all shareholders,” he said. “Finally, the new strategic partnership agreement we signed will enable Ubisoft to accelerate its development in China in the coming years and fully leverage a market with great potential.”

Shiver me timbers! Sea of Thieves only set sail this morning but already the legendary Kraken has been found, and killed.
Various crews have lived to tell the tale and share their videos – the best bit in all of them being the moment the tentacled beast of legend appears. Cue darkened seas and dramatic music and then let the wails be heard. There be some soiled breeches I tell ye!
The way to kill the Kraken is to shoot and slash at the tentacles with your handguns, cannon and swords. But beware the mouths of the tentacles for they can snatch you up and try to consume you, unless you slash your way free first.
The Kraken also wraps tentacles around your ship and punches holes in it, so you will need to repair constantly if you want to stay afloat.
Should you live to tell the tale and send the beast packing your reward appears to be only an Achievement: “Kraken Good Job [15G] – A number of tentacles appeared from the ocean, you quelled the beast without showing emotion.”
How long will it take you? We have a Sea of Thieves guide to help you as you set sail from today.

PUBG Corp. and Tencent surprised everyone when they decided to suddenly release PUBG Mobile in the US and other regions this week. After being beaten to consoles by the free-to-play Fortnite: Battle Royale, it looked as if Fortnite would again be the first of the two big-name games to hit mobile in the West when an iOS test began recently. Instead, PUBG has beaten Fortnite to the punch, as the former is now available free on iOS and Android. If you’ve already been playing, however, you might want to temper your excitement over any wins you picked up in the early going.
When you first open the game, you’re presented with the option to take part in a tutorial, or you can just jump straight into a match (in Squad mode, by default). From there, things basically play out like PUBG on PC and Xbox One: you wait in the lobby, parachute out of a plane onto the island, and try to survive. What’s seemingly different is everyone’s success rate–the game’s subreddit has been flooded with posts from people who have never won on other platforms yet managed to rack up a chicken dinner in their first game on mobile.
The quick assumption is that these are players who understand PUBG’s mechanics and have a leg up on new players, or that the less precise touch controls have flattened the skill curve, giving everyone a better chance to take out other players. Yet it appears what’s causing this is instead the presence of bots, which apparently fill in matches and serve to ease players into the experience. It’s a clever way to ease people into what can be a difficult game, but it also means the bloated egos of those who claimed victory in their first match are looking a little silly now (ahem).
Whatever the competition might be, PUBG works surprisingly well on mobile, although the controls can be a challenge. The game scales its visuals to one of several settings depending on what device you’re using to play, and some changes have been made. For instance, there is an auto pick-up option that eases the amount of inventory management you have to do. There are also daily login bonuses to keep players coming back, as is typical for a mobile game. If you haven’t already downloaded it, you can grab it from the iOS App Store or Google Play.

Soon, ’80s kids, a childhood dream will come true. Ghostbusters World is an upcoming augmented reality game for Android and iOS that lets you hunt and trap ghosts in the real world, similiarly to Niantic’s popular mobile game Pokémon Go. It was created with Google Maps API technology and was featured on stage during the Google Keynote yesterday at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. You can watch a gameplay clip above.
The 2-minute video shows the game in action as Ghost Corps’ Eric Reich attempts to catch a zombie taxi driver. You can spot the infamous librarian ghost in-game as well. Catching ghosts looks harder than flinging a Poḱe Ball, however. Players need to use their proton packs or proton shotgun (cool!) to get a ghost’s health down to at least 50 percent before firing a trap. They’ll need to counter attacks from the irate spirits too. And, of course, there’s plenty of slime.
Ghostbusters World comes out later this year and it looks like it has the potential to be as addictive as raiding gyms in Pokémon Go. Get your best Venkman cosplay ready.
Last month, Bandai Namco teased that Broly and Bardock were coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ, but now we have an actual for the DLC duo. What are you doing next week?
More precisely, the characters are coming to the fighting game on March 28. They’re the first of eight planned premium characters for the game, and are included in the game’s $34.99 season pass.
Take a look at the new trailer below to get an extended look at how Goku’s pop fares in combat. Spoiler: He is a strong guy.

Nvidia is introducing a graphics technology this year that video game developers have been hoping to see for a long time: the ability to render and illuminate a scene in real time with cinematic quality, the company announced today at the 2018 Game Developers Conference.
Known as “real-time ray tracing,” the technology has long been considered the holy grail of graphics rendering. Now Nvidia is bringing it to game makers as Nvidia RTX, which companies like 4A Games (Metro), Epic Games (Unreal Engine) and Remedy Entertainment (Quantum Break) have already been experimenting with. That doesn’t mean you’ll start to see this in games immediately — RTX requires Nvidia’s new Volta line of GPUs, and the company hasn’t even unveiled any consumer-level Volta graphics cards yet.
As always, though, bringing this kind of technology to market is a long process that starts with getting game makers and other stakeholders on board. Nvidia has partnered closely with Microsoft on RTX, and the technology is fully supported in Microsoft’s new DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API, integrating the forward-looking feature directly into Windows.
In case you’re unfamiliar with ray tracing, here’s a brief primer. In the real world, everything that we see is essentially the result of light bouncing off of the objects in our vision. The varying degrees to which that light is absorbed, reflected and/or refracted — and fluorescence is the fourth possibility — determines how it looks to us. “Ray tracing” is essentially the reverse process, and the name is very literal: It refers to a method of generating an image with a computer by “tracing” the path of light from an imaginary eye or camera to the objects in that image. A ray tracing algorithm will account for elements such as the light sources in the scene and the materials that the objects consist of.
Ray tracing solves a lot of difficult graphics problems, like replicating transparency and refraction. But the major downside is that it requires an incredible amount of computational power, which has made it impossible to use in real-time graphics rendering. For many years, ray tracing has been standard technology in the film industry, where visual effects artists can take hours and hours to render a single frame of, say, a TIE fighter blowing up in a Star Wars movie. But until now, that’s been impractical for real-time use in video games, which instead rely on a technique called rasterization to generate 3D scenes.
“Some of the demonstrations you’re going to see, they literally look like movies,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology, during a conference call with the media last week. Tamasi was talking about GDC 2018, where companies like Remedy will unveil their work with Nvidia RTX.
You can see an example above of RTX in Remedy’s Northlight engine, which was the basis for the studio’s most recent game, 2016’s Quantum Break.
“Integrating Nvidia RTX into our Northlight engine was a relatively straightforward exercise,” said Mikko Orrenmaa, technology team manager at Remedy, in a news release. “We were surprised just how quickly we were able to prototype new lighting, reflection and ambient occlusion techniques, with significantly better visual fidelity than traditional rasterization techniques. We are really excited about what we can achieve in the future with the Nvidia RTX technology.”
And that’s the thing: It’s going to take a while to see this technology in actual games. There’s no word on when Nvidia will begin shipping Volta GPUs, though Tamasi said, “We expect to see games shipping with [RTX] this year.” He added that RTX will be “a ‘turn it up to 11’ kind of feature” initially, with developers “layering in some ray tracing effects on top of rasterization-based techniques.” (Which makes sense, since only a tiny portion of players will have Volta graphics cards.) But it’s clear that this is the future of video game graphics, and it’s looking promising.
Update: We’ve added a video demonstrating DirectX Raytracing in Remedy’s Northlight engine to the top of this article.
Update 2: Following Nvidia’s announcement, a spokesperson for the company’s chief competitor, AMD, reached out to Polygon to note that the firm is also working with Microsoft on this kind of technology, although AMD’s statement did not explicitly mention the DirectX Raytracing API. One of AMD’s sessions at GDC 2018 focuses on real-time ray tracing techniques that can deliver “high performance on any combination of CPU and GPUs.”
“AMD is collaborating with Microsoft to help define, refine and support the future of DirectX12 and ray tracing,” the statement reads. AMD added, “We’re looking forward to discussing with game developers their ideas and feedback related to PC-based ray tracing techniques for image quality, effects opportunities, and performance.”

Fortnite streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins currently makes around $500,000 a month.
The 26-year-old former professional Halo player told CNBC his astonishing monthly revenue comes from a combination of factors that includes his mammoth 3.7m Twitch followers, 5m YouTube subscribers and millions of social media followers.
The bulk of the revenue comes from Amazon and Twitch Prime subscribers, however. It costs $4.99 a month to subscribe to a streamer’s channel. In the interview, Ninja said he had benefited from a promotion between Twitch and Fortnite maker Epic that lets Amazon and Twitch Prime subscribers obtain loot in the free-to-download Battle Royale game. This is “one of the main reasons for the influx of subscribers currently to my stream” he said.
Ninja will also have benefited greatly from a recent high-profile Fortnite gaming session with rapper Drake, which he said during the stream had added 10,000 subscribers to his Twitch channel alone. Ninja has become the biggest streamer on Twitch since switching to playing Fortnite, which is pretty much the hottest game on earth right now.
“I think I offer high-tier gameplay they can’t get with a lot of other content creators,” Ninja said when asked about his appeal. “It’s very difficult to be one of the best at a video game – or anything at all in the world.
“I’m very goofy. I do impressions, and just crazy shenanigans. The combination of that – it’s a hybrid. It’s just really fun to watch and a pretty positive environment as well.”
While Ninja’s Fortnite-fuelled rise on Twitch has been meteoric, he has worked hard to get to this point – and he’s certainly come a long way since his professional Halo-playing days a decade ago.
“I maintained my job I was working at Noodles and Company and I stayed in college while I was doing all these things,” he said. “I continued to do well in school and focus on the future of my life as well as working on streaming and competing in Halo.
“It was one of those things where, if I was doing well in school, putting in the time and effort there, in soccer as well, that I would be rewarded with playing as many games as I wanted.
“Honestly, I encourage everyone to do that. All the kids out there: you can’t just drop everything to focus on playing video games for a living. It’s also becoming a very competitive career choice. You want to make sure you’re securing your future while putting the extra time to make this happen as well.”
With a whopping half a million dollars coming in every month, Ninja has plenty of money to play with. So what’s he doing with it? Investing and saving, as well as making charitable donations, he said.
“Definitely investing and saving it as much as possible. I don’t plan on doing anything crazy with it right now. Me and my wife are sponsoring an animal every month.”

‘Video Computer System’
From being at the forefront of the industry, to publishing games on other platforms, and even making speaker hats — Atari has been places. But it seems they’re going back to basics and taking another stab at the hardware market, with the newly announced Atari VCS.
Prior to this announcement, when the company was still teasing this new system last year as the “Ataribox,” there was quite a bit of confusion regarding what this system would actually entail. Whether it was from the proposed idea to crowd fund the system on Indiegogo — that went nowhere — or what the actual system was even supposed to be. From another retro all-in-one system, to even a streaming box of some kind, or potentially an attempt at a new console to enter the console marketplace.
Well, with this new announcement, Atari has shed some light on this, and it seems to be all of the above…again? With more information coming at this week’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, what has been revealed so far (outside of the new branding), is basically the console’s aesthetic once again, the new controllers that accompany it, and the possibility of retro games.
With no word yet on if the hardware or architecture of the system has changed, judging by the images that have been showcased, the system will include two controllers, one based around a modern design (similar to that of the Xbox One controller), and one retro-inspired joystick taking clear inspiration from the Atari 2600 joystick.
The system will also include retro games, but, according to Atari will also “change the way you interact with your TV, just as the original Atari 2600 Video Computer System first did more than 40 years ago.”
The press release sent to DualShockers also contained a statement from COO of Connected Devices’ Michael Arzt:
“Every person at Atari and every partner involved with the new platform is just as fanatical about the brand and its heritage as our biggest fans are. With the Atari VCS name, we know how important it is to get everything completely right and that’s why we briefly paused an imminent launch late last year. It was a difficult decision with the countdown underway, but we weren’t willing to go forward with even one thing out of alignment. We hope that Atari’s fans appreciate our extreme attention to detail and are as excited about the Atari VCS as we are.”
The pre-order date will be announced this April, but, outside of the fairly generic statement, new name, controllers, and promises to change the way we interact with our TVs, I can’t help but feel like we’re still at square one.

Robocraft Royale allows players to battle it out, and explore the vast 64km2 map, using the craziest character-bots sourced from the Robocraft community, including chain gun wielding chickens, and Abraham Lincoln in a go-kart.
Much like Fortnite, and PUBG, you begin each match by being ejected from a spaceship alongside 99 other players. Upon landing, you must quickly loot the landscape for the best character types. Each robot has its own variety of weapons, movements, and abilities, with some much stronger than others. You’ll need to adapt to various character types to succeed, and be the last player standing.
Robocraft Royale’s cube destruction system means you can render your enemies weaponless, take them out limb-by-limb, or just annihilate them.
The transformer-like battle royale also offers an ever-changing roster of new character bots, while events, map updates, contests, and team modes are on the way.
“Robocraft Royale offers completely new intense battle scenarios and carnage for players to spontaneously encounter,” game director Ric Turner says in a press release. “I just saw a chicken running backwards, unloading two chain guns into the front of a monster truck which was trying to run it over. Another player just did a gun run in a WWII plane, but got his wings blown off by a Dino Mech. Using his only remaining propeller, he reverse tumbles into a skylight of a building to discover a vacant über mech.”

Enlarge/This headset will give you a much sharper image and a much lighter wallet than the original Vive.
Sam Machkovech
HTC’s higher-resolution Vive Pro, first announced back in January, is setting new records for the price of a mass-market virtual reality headset. In pre-orders starting today ahead of planned April 5 shipments, customers will have to shell out $799 for the improved Vive Pro headset, a price that does not include any controllers or Lighthouse tracking base stations.
While the original Vive also cost $799 when it launched nearly two years ago, that package included two controllers and the two tracking stations necessary for un-occluded, room-scale VR. Existing HTC Vive owners will be able to reuse those accessories if and when they upgrade to the Vive Pro headset. New users, however, will currently have to purchase them à la carte (an HTC representative tells Ars that pricing for a separate “full kit” Vive Pro package will be announced soon).
While the Vive and Vive Pro both technically work with other controllers (including some competing motion-tracked options), the vast majority of Vive-compatible VR software is designed to work with the hand-tracking “wand” controllers that have been a standard part of the Vive package since launch. At least one tracking base station is required to follow the Vive headset as a user moves their head, though two are recommended for more “room-scale” applications.
Oddly enough, new Vive Pro customers would actually seem to be better off spending $499 on a classic Vive package (with its included set of two controllers and two tracking stations) rather than buying those accessories separately for about $530. In addition to saving about $30, they’d get a bonus, original Vive headset for their trouble.
The Vive Pro includes two 1440 x 1600 resolution displays—a 78-percent increase in pixel count over the 1080×1200 screens in the original Vive—as well as an improved, adjustable headstrap with integrated over-ear headphones. In recent hands-on testing, Ars’ Sam Machkovech said the new hardware placed us “officially in new VR fidelity territory.” We’ll have a more detailed review shortly before the headset’s April 5 launch.

According to PlayStation.Blog
Hello! We’re awfully excited about virtual reality here at PlayStation headquarters, especially with recent releases like The Inpatient, Moss, and Sprint Vector proving that VR can deliver a wide range of immersive experiences across various genres.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of more than 30 games that are currently targeting a PlayStation VR release during spring 2018.
Of course, it’s always possible that some of these titles could shift forward or back and end up launching outside of this timeframe, but the list below is what we’ve got on deck as of today.
We’ve plucked out a few of our most anticipated ones and highlighted them in the list, but we’d love to hear which ones you’re looking forward to… chime in below!
Anamorphine
Apocalypse Rider
Ark Park
Snail Games
In a spinoff from the popular action game, ARK: Survival Evolved, Ark Park enables you to engage in various adventures in a dinosaur theme park. Traverse the facility and interact with the various species there; hunt rogue dinos that have managed to get free of the effects of their “taming” devices; and engage in dinosaur breeding by collecting eggs.
The good news: You’re an ape with above-average smarts. The bad news: You’re held captive in a guarded facility while humans seek a cure for the “Simian Flu” that’s ravaged the planet and which threatens mankind’s existence. Can you find your way to freedom and escape the coming catastrophe with the others of your kind?
Virtual Rick-ality gives you the opportunity to bring Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty into your living room for a PS VR adventure that involves puzzle solving, intergalactic travel, button pushing, alien fisticuffs, smashing things and Rick occasionally… er, frequently yelling at you.
When a game’s title has “smash” in it and the gamemakers describe the game as a “a PlayStation VR tear-it-up,” you’re in for a fun time. Fresh out of magic school and back at the family castle, it’s up to you to use your new skills to find treasure that’ll you need to pay off your family’s debts.
Torn, a mystery inspired by classics like The Twilight Zone, is set in the Vermont forest where you discover a house full of secrets. What you find there are numerous experiments, inventions, gear and documentation that reveal a lot about the doctor who lived there — however, they’re also remnants of a man who’s been missing for 64 years.
Right out of the gate, this first-person puzzle-adventure title tells you that you’re dead. Not a great start. From there, you’ll explore at your own pace in an entertaining trek through the afterlife, with the story revealed mostly through poetry. It promises to be a unique game suitable for new and veteran VR adventurers alike.

Star Wars Battlefront II is getting a complete redesign of its progression system which removes Star Cards for purchase, paid loot boxes and adds a new linear progression system, Electronic Arts announced today.
The changes hit on March 21, with more content rolling out in the following weeks and plans for paid appearance items coming in April, according to the company.
“Since release, we’ve been hard at work making changes based on your feedback to create a better game for all our players,” EA officials wrote in a blog post this morning. “Today, we’re happy to announce that the Star Wars Battlefront II Progression update, which includes a complete re-design of the in-game progression system, will begin rolling out on March 21st.”
Here are the keypoints:
With this update, progression is now linear. Star Cards, or any other item impacting gameplay, will only be earned through gameplay and will not be available for purchase. Instead, you’ll earn experience points for the classes, hero characters, and ships that you choose to play in multiplayer. If you earn enough experience points to gain a level for that unit, you’ll receive one Skill Point that can be used to unlock or upgrade the eligible Star Card you’d like to equip.
You’ll keep everything you’ve already earned and unlocked. You will keep all of the Star Cards, heroes, weapons, or anything else you have already earned. What you have earned will still be available to use with this update regardless of how much or little progress you have already made.
Crates no longer include Star Cards and cannot be purchased. Crates are earned by logging in daily, completing Milestones, and through timed challenges. Inside of these crates, you’ll find Credits or cosmetic items, such as emotes or victory poses, but nothing that impacts gameplay.
Starting in April, you’ll be able to get appearances directly through in-game Credits or Crystals. The first new appearances are coming soon, meaning you’ll be able to grab new looks for your heroes and troopers directly by using either Credits (earned in-game) or Crystals (available to purchase in-game and through first-party stores). If you’ve ever dreamed of being a part of the Resistance as a Rodian, your chance is right around the corner.
The progression update hits on March 21, with more content promised in the following weeks.
“These changes are a major step as we continue to improve the core of the game and add new content,” according to the post. “And there’s a lot more to come. In addition to continued balance patches, we will also add a number of modes to Star Wars Battlefront II in the coming months, offering several standout, brand-new ways to play. Some of these, like the recently released limited-time Jetpack Cargo, are radically different than anything you’ve experienced in the game before, and we’re excited to surprise you with what we have planned.”
The complete overhaul of the game’s progression and monetization systems comes nearly six months after the company received historic backlash from players about its hero unlock systems.
EA halted microtransactions on the eve of Battlefront 2’s launch after beta participants complained the loot boxes were overly aggressive and gave an unfair advantage to those who spent the money. The public outcry led to EA receiving the most downvoted comment in Reddit history. The publisher reportedly also lost an estimated $3.1 billion in stock value following the controversy, and Hawaii state legislators are now considering a ban on the game and investigating what they call “predatory practices.”
The reaction to the game’s use of loot boxes, called crates in the Star Wars, led to a heightened awareness of loot boxes and more attention from politicians.

I love my Switch, but you know what was also great? The GameCube. If only there were a way to combine the two…Oh wait, there is! At least if you’re as clever as this DIY modder.
On his YouTube channel this week, Dorison Hugo took a replica Switch dock and put it inside an old silver GameCube to make one of the best Frankenstein Switch accessories ever. In addition to looking way cooler than the normal black dock, it also has functional GameCube controller ports. It’s kind of like when they added that third nacelle to the Enterprise D in the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Here’s how he did it.
First he made a 3D model of the official Switch dock. The point of this was to make a dock that was customized to fit better inside the Gamecube but was still as close to the original measurements as possible.
Then he 3D printed his own dock, tested it, and re-tuned his 3D model for the final version.
Next he cut into the GameCube shell (after removing the guts). This is both the coolest and most harrowing part, because it involves needing to be precise with the use of a dremel buzzsaw. I mean, you want this thing to look nice after all.
Then he hollowed out the case, glued in the switch dock, and reinstalled the electronics from his real Switch docck to make the 3D printed one work.
Finally, and this is the part that makes this particular mod so special, he took apart a four-port GameCube controller adapter built for the Wii U, connected the USB to the Switch dock, and secured it inside the front of the Gamecube shell so the controllers would be exactly where you’d normally see them.
These, of course, are the abbreviated steps. Hugo was very methodical in trimming out excess plastic and gluing stuff inside the dock and Gamecube shell so everything fit nicely and wouldn’t move around. “Soldering would have made it all easy,” Hugo said in an email. “But using the original cables required some planning. Other than that the hard part was not scratching the case.”
It’s unclear whether the extra plastic on either side of the dock will create heating problems in the long term, but so far he says he hasn’t experienced any in his limited testing. While the project takes a lot of work and requires a lot of extra tools (not all of us have 3D printers lying around) this contraption sure would come in handy once the next Super Smash Bros. hits later this year.
You can everything that went into making the Gamecube Switch dock in more detail in Hugo’s video below.

With Far Cry 5‘s much-anticipated release coming up soon, we’ve now learned a little bit more about the game and some of its features. Publisher Ubisoft confirmed to GameSpot today two key particulars about the game regarding microtransactions and whether or not you will need an internet connection to play the campaign.
As with many other games, including previous Ubisoft games, Far Cry 5 will offer microtransactions. Executive producer Dan Hay stressed that the game will be generous in what it offers, though if you want to speed up your progress by spending money, you’ll have that option. “We’ve set the game up to be generous,” Hay said. “We’ve set the game up so…nothing is locked [away]. You can go out and explore, and the game will reward you for your exploration.”
Ubisoft PR followed up to offer a full statement on Far Cry 5’s microtransactions, saying they will allow players to speed up their progress. It remains to be seen exactly how this will work, but looking at another recent Ubisoft game, Assassin’s Creed Origins, may give us some clues. That game offers “Time Saver Packs” that include items or packs of in-game currency that you can then spend to speed up your progress. They are totally optional, and can be unlocked through normal gameplay. It is possible that Far Cry 5 will offer something similar.
Far Cry 5’s microtransactions will be available for single-player and co-op, and apparently head-to-head multiplayer as well. It’ll probably make gamers happy to learn that all of Far Cry 5’s microtransaction items are cosmetic only; they do not affect gameplay.
Also in our interview, Ubisoft confirmed that Far Cry 5’s full campaign will be playable offline. Of course, if you want to play in co-op or are interested in checking out the game’s online components, you will need an internet connection. You would expect to be able to play a campaign offline, but not all games allow you to. For example, Bungie’s Destiny 2 requires a constant internet connection, even when playing solo.
We will have lots more from our interview with Dan Hay in the days ahead, covering many other topics, but notably the conception and creepy charisma of the game’s main cult leader antagonist, Joseph Seed. We also asked Hay about Far Cry 5’s impressive- and deep-looking map-editing tools. Far Cry 5 launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 27.

Here’s a recap of what’s been confirmed for Kingdom Hearts III so far in terms of worlds: Tangled, Toy Story, Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc., Hercules, Twilight Town, and Yen Sid’s Tower. We also know that “no Final Fantasy worlds” are in. For a nebulous “2018” release that’s not too bad in terms of info, but a new leak might have given us more insight if it’s correct.
Spoilers, obviously.
According to the reddit thread that features a source who correctly leaked Monsters Inc., the 100 Acre Wood and a Frozen world (Arendelle) are in. The latter was blindingly obvious given the massive financial success of the film, and honestly, could have even delayed the game further.
We’ll likely see more leading into E3, where we’ll potentially get a release date. I know what a lot of you are thinking — “why Frozen?” Well let me blow your minds: it made over a billion dollars. I could really go for an ice world for a little variety, and I hope Elsa’s ice monster Marshmallow ends up being a summon (it’ll probably be Olaf who will heal you will warm hugs).

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red recently teased that series protagonist Geralt would make an appearance in a new game coming out this year. Fans instantly began speculating that he would be playable in the new SoulCalibur–a franchise known for its guest characters–and sure enough, Geralt is a SoulCalibur VI character. And it turns out that Bandai Namco isn’t wasting the opportunity to let people know he’s included.
Amazon listings for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of SoulCalibur VI have gone live, revealing the game’s box art. It turns out that it’s the same keyart we saw alongside the recent announcement, meaning that Geralt–along with Mitsurugi–is featured prominently right on the front of the box.
This isn’t unusual for the series, but it’s first confirmation that the tradition will continue. Bandai Namco likes to prominently display the franchise’s guest characters on box art, whether it’s Link in SoulCalibur II on Gamecube, Yoda or Darth Vader in the Xbox 360/PS3 versions (respectively) of SoulCalibur IV, Ezio in SoulCalibur V, and so on.
“We’ve collaborated with Bandai Namco artists to faithfully recreate Geralt, and shared original Witcher 3: Wild Hunt assets like Geralt’s model, animations, and weapons,” said CD Projekt Red community lead Marcin Momot. “I think Bandai Namco did an outstanding job of capturing all the details and introducing The Witcher to SoulCalibur in a way fans of both series will enjoy.”
Among the other characters confirmed for SoulCalibur VI are Ivy, Zasalamel, Kilik, Xianghua, Nightmare, and new addition Groh. The game does not yet have an exact release date, but it’s due out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this year.

A 24-year-old professional StarCraft player was arrested for fixing matches in Busan, South Korea, Yonhap News reports. Additionally, police have arrested a 26-year-old accomplice that was running an illegal gambling site. Police did not reveal the names of either party.
The 26-year-old suggested the 24-year-old should manipulate the outcome of the quarterfinal match at the 2017 G-STAR Starcraft tournament last November in Busan. Doing so, the latter of the two “lost 2-0 after receiving 4.5 million won [$4,225 USD], and the operator raked in 15 million won via his two gambling sites,” the outlet reports. Additionally, the two attempted a similar scheme during this month’s ASL5 Starcraft tournament.
As well as these two arrests, police have booked a total of 116 people who used the unnamed gambling site, as well as seven other accomplices of the website runner that helped fix matches.

Warriors Orochi 4 announced
Due out 2018 in Japan. Platform(s) not announced.
Koei Tecmo and Omega Force have announced Warriors Orochi 4, the first brand new numbered entry in the series since Warriors Orochi 3 in 2011. It will launch in Japan in 2018. Platform(s) were not announced.
Like the Dynasty Warriors series, the numbering of the Warriors Orochi series is one digit higher in the west than it is in Japan. This is because the second Warriors Orochi game, which is titled Musou Orochi: Rebrith of the Demon Lord in Japan, was released as Warriors Orochi 2 in the west. The actual Musou Orochi 2 was released as Warriors Orochi 3 in the west. The new entry announced today is titled Musou Orochi 3 in Japan.

“If people want to play a run ‘n’ gun game, they should play Gears of War or whatever. This is not that. This is better.”
Most games make a point of selling you on one core mechanical concept, the interactions you’ll hopefully be enjoying for 10, 50, 100 hours. Halo’s ‘gunfeel’, Bayonetta’s Witch Time, Mount Your Friends’, er, physics. Each one should feel good enough to keep you playing, no matter how repetitious it might actually be. A Way Out is almost stubbornly trying to do the exact opposite.
Every time Josef Fares, the game’s director, and I finish playing a section of his co-op narrative adventure game, he turns round, smiles and tells me that the game will never do that again. In half an hour of skipping between various scenes I’ve crept through a stealth section, gone spear fishing, taken part in a police chase, balanced on wheelchairs, button-mashed through 2D brawler combat, and played Connect Four. A single run-through’s aimed for 6-8 hours. There’s going to be a lot to do.
Fares has a neat term for how he created the interactive elements in his prison escape narrative: “finding gameplay”. Rather than creating a mechanic to build a story around, Fares and his team created a story, and then searched for the right ways to inject gampley into it. The result, he promises, is a game with truly cinematic pacing – peaks and troughs of action alongside dramatic storytelling – that constantly offers new ways to interact.
The game’s much talked-about visual approach – remaining almost constantly in a shifting split-screen view, even when playing with a friend online – is a gorgeous delivery method for that idea. An early section sees one player trying to calmly drive a car through a police barricade, while the other hides from view – so the game shrinks the hiding player’s view to a third of the screen, letting the driver see where they’re going, while communicating something of the claustrophobia of the situation to the other player.
The best scene I’ve played so far sees both lead characters escaping from a hospital. Here, the split-screen disappears entirely while a single shot follows Vincent and Leo in turn, the camera flying through air vents or down stairwells to keep up. By switching character, the game’s switching player too, each putting on a chase scene show for the other. It culminates (at least in the demo I played) in Leo fighting his way out of a corridor in a scene that directly references Oldboy’s famous single-shot fight. It’s a truly brilliant way to keep the tension of the scene flowing, all while giving both players something interesting to do.
While that moment’s critical to the story (and there are game over states for failing your actions), Fares promises many more one-off gameplay touches that you’ll only come across by exploring. Fares runs through a list of extra little experiences for those who want to spend the time looking: darts, arm wrestling, baseball and an arcade machine – “they’re all spread out,” he says “if you want to take a break and have a bit of fun.”
That wealth of different elements might have taken its toll a little in the animation department. Fares says the game has over 20,000 animations – more than some major AAA games, apparently. That’s partly down to Fares’ exacting approach to depicting both lead characters as distinctly different people.
While they’re definably different in their approach to escape – broadly, Vincent’s thoughtful and quiet, Leo’s impulsive and violent – the differences between them are more subtle, too. Both characters were mo-capped by different actors (in a strange touch, Leo’s appearance is based on Josef Fares’ brother, but Josef himself performed the mo-cap, making the character some weird Fares brother chimera), and each character can perform almost every action in the game, effectively doubling the number of animations.
“You can see why my animators love me,” says Fares sarcastically, with a look on his face that’s either joking smile or actual grimace. While it’s impressive as a commitment, parts of our demo see both characters’ movements looking fairly jerky and basic in the most freely playable moments, which detracts from the game’s usual cinematic quality somewhat.
But I feel almost churlish having a problem with that, when it’s clear how much A Way Out wants to offer. If that’s the price to pay for a game that actually offers you something new in every single scene, then I think I’ll end up happy to pay it.
Fares himself is bullish about his vision for the game. When I ask if he ever felt the need to include repeated action sequences to keep the archetypical gamer invested, he was… uncompromising: “If people want to play a run ‘n’ gun game, they should play Gears of War or whatever. This is not that. This is better.”

Fortnite Battle Royale – the free-to-play last-man-standing phenomenon – is due to launch imminently for iPhone and iPad, and this is how it looks on the smaller screen:
Fans expect Fortnite Battle Royale’s iOS launch to take place any moment now, although developer Epic is keeping schtum as to exactly when this will be.
Android users will get their version of the game “in the next few months”.
Fortnite’s smartphone versions are designed to be as close to their PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bigger brothers as possible. Gameplay takes place on the same map with the same events and regular content additions.
The main difference? We’ll have to see how those touchscreen controls feel.
Last week, Epic confirmed PC, smartphone and console owners would be able to play together – although PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will not be matched with each other. Both Epic and Xbox boss Phil Spencer have expressed dismay at this – and pointed the finger firmly at Sony for not allowing full cross-platform play to be possible.

According to Eurogamer.net
In an instant, it became my most anticipated game of 2018. Kunos Simulazioni, developers of the brilliant Assetto Corsa, had bagged the rights to the Blancpain GT series – perhaps motorsport’s healthiest championship, and certainly one that boasts the most diverse manufacturer participation with Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, Audi and McLaren all taking part. Not a bad list, really, and the racing’s more than half decent too.
What is it that makes the prospect of Assetto Corsa Competizione, as the officially licensed game is to be called when it hits Early Access this summer, so exciting? It’s a long overdue appearance of a game that represents real motorsport outside beyond the world of F1, and one that promises the kind of authenticity you just can’t find anywhere else. I don’t need detailed career modes, loot boxes full of car mods or pages of fictional emails to scroll through; just give me a season of real races against real teams and drivers run to real rules, governed by a simple points table, and you’ve got everything I need.
And in Assetto Corsa Competizione it looks like we’re finally getting the successor to GTR 2 that I’ve pined for for years. Indeed, you’ve got to feel a little sorry for Simbin’s UK studio that’s quietly working on GTR 3 – a large part of the appeal of GTR 2 was how it co-opted the FIA GT Championship, starring the Spa 24 Hours as its centrepiece, and now Assetto Corsa Competizione is taking on that series’ spiritual successor and getting Belgium’s endurance classic to boot. The licence is a large part of the appeal, so there must have been some competition over it.
“It was a very delicate negotiation, so it was necessary to keep the utmost secrecy until all the pieces fell in place, and it was not easy because the management of many aspects related to licensing is now different from the past,” Marco Massarutto told our friends over at Eurogamer Italy. “The SRO company that holds the rights for the Blancpain GT Series was more than happy to receive our proposal – they already knew Assetto Corsa and the idea to jointly produce an official video game based on their league intrigued them right away, but we weren’t the only players in the negotiations.”
The new licence – and the expectations that it brings – means an all-new Assetto Corsa, now built on Unreal Engine 4 which will help facilitate dynamic day/night transitions and weather; as you’d want for a game that looks to replicate the Spa 24 Hours, which despite its summer timing is always partial to a downpour or two.
“The UE4 particle system allows to efficiently simulate a large number of effects: from drops to rain spray, sparks, and more,” Massarutto says of the upgrade. “Trees, vegetation and public will be animated and in 3D, which will make the racing environments much more alive and immersive. It is one of the features where we have changed our approach compared to the past, opting for the kind of “staging” that the public thinks can be found in a circuit and that derives mainly from what it’s seen on TV during F1 and MotoGP races.”
A lot of it’s still up in the air – it’s uncertain what size fields will be supported, with the engine still being optimised, and features such as VR and triple-screen support are still under evaluation. “Let’s not forget that it is a constantly evolving engine and Epic is always very interested in keeping their software/hardware compatibility level the highest possible.”
Likewise, console versions, while very much being factored into the designs, sound like they could be someway off – indeed, reading between the lines of Massarutto’s answers, you might even have to wait until PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox to see them. The one thing you need to know right now, though, is that PC versions are very much the priority for the time being.
“We’re developing the game with UE4, and that allows to port the game on different formats and also in terms of gameplay and user interface, we are developing AC Competizione meeting all requirements to be able to publish on consoles,” Massarutto says. “With this in mind, the choice of which platforms will be supported and when is first of all a question of performance: once we will have reached the best optimisation we will be able to attain on PC, we will check if the current generation of consoles can guarantee the quality level we want to achieve for the console versions of Assetto Corsa Competizione.”
Assetto Corsa Competizione is also, with any luck, going to benefit from a focus on more thoroughbred machinery – I still think the original Assetto Corsa’s handling is best in class when it comes to road cars, though I’m not entirely convinced that’s the case with its race cars (though it’s not as if I have that much experience of driving the latter to make a fair assessment). The Blancpain field makes up their lap times in very different ways, too, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Kunos brings each car’s characteristics to the fore. Beyond that, there’s a general overhaul of the handling that should benefit every car in the game.
“If you look at our development history, you will see that Ferrari Virtual Academy was an evolution of his predecessor netKar PRO, while there is a big generational gap between these two games and Assetto Corsa. With AC Competizione there will be another jump, in all respects. The physics will benefit from our past experience and a new approach on tire models and deformations, on transmission, suspension and aerodynamics that are all more in-depth and specific related to the sports series we are reproducing.”
There’s more that entails, too – driver swapping is in for the endurance races in both single-player and multiplayer – while the full calendar and team line-up is also going to make the cut (which means Zolder and Paul Ricard are to be added to Assetto Corsa’s existing line-up – all of which are getting an overhaul in their move over to a new engine). It’s nothing less than the official game of the Blancpain series – a simple prospect, but if all the pieces fall in place, it’ll be nothing less than one of the most exciting racing game for years.

‘It’s classic Steven Spielberg’
Ready Player One may not be the disaster many people assumed it would be.
It only took minutes after the film screened at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas this weekend for positive reactions to start rolling in. Film critics who managed to get into the screening lauded Spielberg’s technical skills, calling it one of his most accomplished films to date. Even director Robert Rodriguez came out of the film with nothing but astonishment for Spielberg’s achievement.
That sound you’re hearing is the release of bated breath that Ready Player One fans have been holding since the film was first announced. There were concerns that even with Spielberg at the helm, Ready Player One would be ruined — and that was just one sect of the internet. Other critics were concerned that Ready Player One would be nothing more than nostalgia-bait; a sea of cute references without purpose.
Although there were some concerns from a few audience members, Ready Player One seems to be a crowning achievement for Spielberg. Here are some of the best reactions from the premiere:
Positive reactions
Ready Player One is a pop culture extravaganza. A truly one of a kind film that combines video games, tv, movies, music, & action figures into one huge crowd pleasing film. Prepare to be wowed & see this on the biggest screen with the best sound system possible. #ReadyPlayerOnepic.twitter.com/Tj6QuqI9oF
#ReadyPlayerOne is classic Steven Spielberg. It’s got the references, the ferocious effects and the great ‘80s soundtrack, sure, but also the charm, the heart, the humor and a fantastic Alan Silvestri score. I loved it & so did this #SXSW crowd. Be excited for it! pic.twitter.com/xwPOGwXDxd
Went into READY PLAYER ONE skeptical as hell. Came out largely as a joyous convert. I have a handful of issues with the structure and characters, but it improves on the book in important ways, the action is riveting, and I really bought the humor. #readyplayerone
What a fantastic love letter to games and pop culture from Mr. Spielberg! An awesome book is now an awesome film! Every gamer should see Ready Player One. Super fun, extremely satisfying and offers a ton of new things even for book readers! #AJsBadAssSealOfApproval
TOTALLY engrossed in every second of @readyplayerone. It is one of the most technically brilliant things I have EVER seen. Spielberg is one of the few directors who could orchestrate this kind of visual symphony that SO many people will enjoy. Pretty amazing.🎮
#ReadyPlayerOne posits a corporate big wig who exploits fan culture for profit as its villain. The irony of that is giving me a headache. This is no love letter to pop culture. It’s a crass play to nostalgia; it offers nothing new or exciting.
Genuinely still shifting through my #ReadyPlayerOne feelings but it’s telling that some fanboys have already yelled at me for not coming out of the gate singing its praises. That’s exactly the culture way RP1 attempts to grapple with.
…the bad narration (a narrative crutch) in intro doesn’t work. Might’ve been in better hands with an indie director who focused on human story & class disparity which is better explored in the book. But there are a ton of references. Overall feels dated. 2/2 #ReadyPlayerOne
It sounds like the good qualities mostly outweigh the bad, but you’ll be able to see for yourself in a couple of weeks. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29.

Sony still not up for multi-format Battle Royale
Microsoft’s Phil Spencer made an appearance on twitter this weekend to briefly show his support of Epic Games’ juggernaut Fortnite going cross-play on all formats.
After a Fortnite fan posted a tweet telling Spencer that they were hoping for cross-play to be implemented between PS4 and Xbox One players, the Xbox head simply and succinctly replied “Me 2”. This was then amusingly followed up by the Fortnite twitter themselves, who replied to Spencer with “We 3”.
But, currently, all of this is merely wishful thinking, as Sony are notoriously against the concept of PS4 players cross-fraternizing with Xbox owners. While both companies are willing to cross-play with the PC format, in games such as Street Fighter V, Minecraft and Killer Instinct. Sony still seem dead-set against Team Green and Team Blue meeting on the battlefield.
The Fortnite party is set to get even bigger, with recent news that not only is a mobile port of the game on the way, but that too will feature cross-play with all other formats. The Battle Royale player base is set to grow and grow.

Weapon Traits can seriously change the way you play Vermintide 2, and there’s quite a few of them. Here’s how they all work.
A major part of the character progression and build process in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is the concept of weapon traits. These special bonus stats can improve your abilities quite a bit, and crucially they can help to determine and shape your entire approach to combat. Each trait is unique and will play into certain types of play – so it’s important to understand them all as you plan out your strategy for dealing with the enemy hordes.
Weapon traits are a major reason why you might want to go grinding for loot or attempt to game Vermintide 2’s loot system, in fact, since grinding to get a weapon with the trait you want to drop might be very tempting. On this page, we’re going to run down the weapon and item gear traits, listing each and explaining what they do – ideal for you planning how to best approach things with your character class of choice.
Melee Weapon Traits
These traits can be found on any melee weapon. Remember, each melee weapon type in the game is unique to a specific character, so these can’t be transferred between characters.
Heroic Intervention – Assisting an ally under attack grants both players a damage absorption shield for a short time
Off Balance – Blocking an attack increases the damage the attacker takes by 50% for 3.0 seconds
Opportunist – Increases push strength by 50% when used against an attacking enemy
Parry – Timed blocks reduce stamina cost by 100%
Resourceful Combatant – Melee critical hits reduces the remaining cooldown of your career skill by 2.0%
Swift Slaying – Critical hits increases attack speed by 20% for 5.0 seconds
Ranged Weapon Traits
As with the above, these ranged weapon traits can appear on any ranged weapon, but remember that each ranged weapon is unique to a specific hero.
Barrage – Consecutive attacks against the same targets boosts attack power by 5.0% for 5.0 seconds
Conservative Shooter – Headshots replenish 1.0 ammo
Heat Sink – Critical hits remove 4.0 overcharge
Hunter – Critical hits increase attack power by 25% against targets with the same armor class for a short time
Inspirational Shot – Headshots restores stamina to nearby allies
Resourceful Sharpshooter – Ranged critical hits reduces the remaining cooldown of your career skill by 2.0%
Scrounger – Critical hits restore 2.0 ammo
Thermal Equalizer – Weapon generates 20.0% less overheat
Charm Traits
In Vermintide 2 charms all relate to the use of potions, something you’ll be doing a lot in order to stay alive. As such their item traits are related to potion consumption…
Concoction – Drinking a potion grants the effect of all other potions. Duration reduced by 50%
Decanter – Increased duration of potions by 50%
Home Brewer – 25% chance to not consume potion on use
Proxy – Consuming a potion spread the effect to the nearest ally
Necklace Traits
Necklaces are an extra form of protection, and while they’re not much in the armor their traits do allow you to heal naturally in some interesting ways, providing vital life-saving buffs.
Barkskin – Reduces damage taken by 50% for 10.0 seconds after using healing supplies
Boon of Shallya – Increases effectiveness of healing on you by 30%
Hand of Shallya – Healing an ally with a medpack also heals you for 35.0% of your missing health
Healer’s Touch – 25% chance not to consume healing item on use
Natural Bond – Grants passive health regeneration but can no longer heal yourself
Trinket Traits
Trinkets refer to the gadgets you can pick up and use throughout the world of Vermintide 2, though for the most part this refers to explosives and grenades that are used to blast enemies to shreds. The gear traits match that…
Explosive Ordnance – Increases grenade explosion radius by 50%
Grenadier – 25% chance to not consume grenade on use
Shrapnel – Increases damage taken by bombed targets by 20% for 10 seconds.

According to Nintendo Life | Latest Updates
Our good chums over at Digital Foundry certainly do like to look to the future when it comes to gaming tech.
Having debated the benefits of the PS4 Pro and the more recently released Xbox One X, both of which offer substantial benefits to gameplay performance on existing games, industry veteran Richard Leadbetter turns his attention to the Nintendo Switch.
Could a future Nintendo Switch hardware revision realistically use NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor to extend the lifespan of Nintendo’s portable powerhouse?
Of course the answer is a resounding yes, but there is so much more to unpack on the subject and it’s fascinating to hear Richard’s thoughts, either in the video above or the written article over on Eurogamer.
We’ve already seen hardware revisions such as the Nintendo DSi and New Nintendo 3DS in the past of course, so Nintendo is no stranger to adding more power to their portable gaming devices. While there were a small number of exclusive games for the DSi and the New Nintendo 3DS, existing games also featured benefits in loading more quicker and improved frame rates.
However, would a more powerful Switch upset the apple cart? Would developers want to risk splintering the market by making their games run better on the newer hardware? This is an issue which faces many PS4 and Xbox One developers at the moment, but it would seem that gamers are now more accepting of having to upgrade their systems during a single console cycle.
Let us know your thoughts on a future revision of the Switch hardware. Would you pay a bit extra for a Nintendo Switch Pro Edition?

It’s been a hard few years for Halfbrick.
Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick Studios reportedly laid off over 30 people on Monday.
A report from CNET citing multiple sources claims Halfbrick cut its workforce by over half. Known best for free-to-play games like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, the Australian studio was touted as one of mobile gaming’s earliest success stories but things have not been going so well over the last few years.
After large artist lay-offs in 2015 and the closing of its Sydney office in 2016, recent reports indicate that the company’s plan to create new IP is being scaled back. Instead the remaining staff will apparently focus on “maximising opportunities” for the company’s two most famous games.
We wish the best to all those affected, and if for some reason you haven’t heard of the brilliantly addictive Fruit Ninja, check out our review here.

Goat Simulator is an unusual game, not just because it’s really bad but because the Steam description warns that it’s really bad and actually suggests that people should spend their money on something else, like a hula hoop or a pile of bricks. But now Coffee Stain Studios has a mysterious new project in the works called Satisfactory, and it said that this time it’s actually trying really hard to make a decent game.
The teaser doesn’t actually reveal anything about the game (sorry), nor does the threadbare press release that brought it my way. There are hints of something maybe a wee little bit sinister to it, however. The cute little lizard-pupper who’s trying to enjoy his lunch appears to have been interrupted by some kind of construction happening behind the camera; there’s industrial noise and a spot of what I assume is welding, and then a large-sounding vehicle, like a dump truck, starts up and takes off, close enough to cast a visible shadow on the little guy.
The game logo suggests something along the same lines, with flora and fauna along the bottom half, smokestacks and power lines across the top. And let us not forget the name: Satisfactory.
It’s not much to go on, but it’s all we’re getting for now. “If I told you more it wouldn’t be a teaser now, would it?” Coffee Stain CEO Anton Westbergh said.
Goat Simulator jokes aside, this will hopefully be—and could be—a good game, or at least a proper one: Goat Sim was a goat rodeo but before that Coffee Stain made the Sanctum FPS/tower defense crossovers, and they were quite decent. More about Satisfactory will be revealed over the coming months, and Coffee Stain is taking signups for an alpha test that may or may not begin in May at satisfactorygame.com.

Team17 have sent word of the next game to be published under their label. It’s Planet Alpha from Denmark based independent developer Adrian Lazar.
PLANET ALPHA is an atmospheric side-scrolling platform adventure game. Combining fast platforming, creative puzzles, stealth mechanics and a unique art style to create an unforgettable experience.
Lazer previously worked at IO, working on Hitman (2017) and Hitman: Absolution. Since leaving in 2015 he’s been working on this game with a small team to support him along the way.
PLANET ALPHA is the work of passion of a small but very ambitious team. We are building something special and we’re putting everything we have into it. Developing the game for over 4 years has been a roller coaster, so when we looked for a publisher we were very selective.
The game will be released on the Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2018.
The Owner and Creator of this fair website. I also do news, reviews, programming, art and social media here. It is named after me after all. Please understand.

If you’re looking forward to the Final Fantasy VII remake, it’s not a bad idea to go over everything your kindergarten teacher taught you about patience. A recent job listing from Square-Enix indicates the studio’s on a hiring spree for the game (translation via Gematsu), and it needs a whole lot of warm bodies to help get this thing done.
“We’re not moving another step forward on this project until someone gets me a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chocobo. Extra-crispy.””[W]hile we are reaching a satisfactory level in terms of reproducing the original title in high-quality graphics, we have come to the conclusion that we should aim for even higher quality in order to meet the expectations of fans,” the latest job listing states. It then puts out a call for “[C]ore members of various positions such as level planner, battle planner, designer, engineer, etc. including existing members of the development team.” In other words, Square-Enix is looking to hire the kinds of people who actually turn games from wishes and ideas into tangible things.
This latest push might be Square-Enix adding onto its established remake staff in hopes of getting the game out the door before the Four Horsemen take their last ride. After all, the original game came together in under a year once the staff count ballooned past 150 people. Maybe it’s wishful thinking. Modern game development is a foreign beast compared to the late ’90s, and Square-Enix will be Square-Enix, i.e. slow with its major releases.
Moreover, there’s an unspoken worry in the recruitment notice, an understandable desire to live up to people’s expectations for the project, and a fear of potentially letting them down. Square-Enix has seemingly planned itself into a corner. It needs to either give us a good game that won’t please everyone, or it should call the whole thing off. For now, those of us who long for this phantom game will have to wait.

If there’s one thing that gets my motor running, it’s a rad looking platforming game. And when that platforming features combat and the open-ended nature of a Metroidvania, then yeah, you can just sign me right up. So I was pretty stoked to come across a game called JackQuest – The Tale of the Sword in our forums the other day, as it looks to embody all those things I love so much. The game comes from Jose Neto aka NetoX, whose previous iOS releases include Orbital [Free] and MadRobot X [Free]. In the developer’s own words, “If you enjoy challenging bosses, jumping on walls, discovering secret passages, and collecting items to explore new areas, JackQuest is your game!” Here are a couple of quick animated gifs so you can see what it’s like in motion.
Currently there is a demo build of JackQuest that people in our forums are testing, and so far the feedback has been very positive, with the only criticisms being in regards to difficulty and some virtual control issues. Exactly the types of things that can be tweaked and fixed during a testing period! The other complaint is that the demo build is too short, so that also bodes well for the full game if people are already wanting more of it. While it’s unclear how many more testers are needed, feel free to stop by the forum thread to inquire about testing as more builds are already underway and future builds will have additional content. When JackQuest is finished, the current demo portion will be free to download and play with a one-time IAP to unlock the rest of the game.

Since its recent PlayStation Plus release, the streets of Yharnam have seen a sizable income of new Hunters, making it the perfect time to hunt together! Want a Hunter to help you with a particular boss or clear out a tough area? Here’s a quick guide on how to play online in Bloodborne.
Insight
The Insight system is the Lovecraftian mechanic at the very core of Bloodborne. This stat represents the amount of inhuman knowledge you have acquired by exploring the world and defeating bosses. Accumulating Insight points will lead you on your path towards the eldritch truth, seeing the unspeakable, and a lot more.
When it comes to playing online, Insight is also the main currency you’ll need. For the cost of one insight, you can summon players to your world to assist you in the hunt, and you won’t be able to play online until you get your first bit of Insight.
For this, however, you have a few options. The easiest way to get Insight early on in the game is to encounter a boss for the first time or consume Madman’s Knowledge, which you’ll find scattered across Yharnam or as a drop from certain enemies.
Getting help from others (the Beckoning Bell)
Once you have you have some Insight, you’re (almost) good to go. The item you need to summon help in Bloodborne is the Beckoning Bell.
After you’ve obtained your first point of Insight, you’ll buy the Beckoning Bell from the Messengers in the Hunter’s Dream.
Ringing this Beckoning Bell while playing online will grant you the ability to summon helpful players to your world.
Once rung, the bell will open your world and connect you to players who have offered to assist and that are within range of your in-game level and position. A good tip to find helpful players is to use the bell either at the beginning of a level or just before a boss room.
You can have two guests summoned in your world at once. When you play online, enemy health bars will adjust to reflect the extra Hunters in the mix, but co-op has a lot of benefits – for example, other players might distract the boss’s attention, letting you get in behind for some easy attacks.
Online, be wary that opening your world to friendly hunters might also attract unwanted attention from blood-starved Hunters. You will be notified in game if an adversary has invaded your world, so you have a little bit of time to prepare to fight (or to hide).
Helping other players (the Small Resonant Bell)
To be able to help other players, you will need the Small Resonant Bell. This item can be purchased in the Hunter’s Dream from the upper Messenger shop, which will appear once you’ve collected your first Insight.
All you need to do to help other players is ring the Small Resonant Bell and your game will connect to players who are ringing the Beckoning Bell in their world. Once again, a good tip is to use the item before bosses’ rooms or at the beginning of a level. Helping other players and helping them defeat bosses is a great way to gain Insights so you can summon players to your world later on!
Playing with friends
If you want to play with a friend, both the person using the Beckoning bell and the person using the Small Resonant Bell will need to put the same password in the settings under Network. Make sure you are both in the same area and try to stand as close as possible to each other in your respective worlds.
Ending a session (the Silencing Blank)
If for one reason or another you need to put an end to the co-op hunting session, you will need to use the Silencing Blank. You’ll get this item from the same Messenger that gives you the Beckoning Bell. When firing it up, you will end the online session and either return to your world or send the players helping you back to theirs.
Summoning The Old Hunters
After gaining your first point of Insight you’ll find an item known as the ‘Old Hunter Bell’ sitting on the steps of the Hunter’s Workshop, inside the Hunter’s Dream. This special bell can be used to summon the spirits of legendary hunters all around Yharnam and even within the Chalice Dungeons.
The summoning points will appear as small, glowing wells that resonate with a high-pitched chime. Stand over them and press ‘X’ to ring the Old Hunter Bell. Doing this will consume one Insight and summon to your world a friendly NPC hunter who will follow you around that area of the game, helping you to dispatch enemies and – in particular – tough bosses.
Share Play
If Beckoning Bells, Insight and cooperative play are not quite what you had in mind – if you just need to pass the controller to a friend for a moment so they can show you a cool hidden secret or a smart boss strategy, then why not fire-up Share Play?
This unique PlayStation 4 feature allows you to hand to control to a friend via the PlayStation Network and wherever they are in the world, they can take control of the game using their own PS4 as though they were sitting right beside you.
You can continue to chat via parties while you’re using Share Play, meaning you’re free swap strategies or point things out as you go. If, on the other hand, you’d really rather tackle things yourself, you can even simply invite someone to simply spectate and offer hints and tips rather than taking direct control.
#BuddyUpForBloodborne
So now you know how co-op works, what next? Well, you can put a call out to your fellow Hunters across social media, using the hashtag #BuddyUpForBloodborne. You a veteran wanting to guide newcomers through those tougher areas of Yharnam? Offer up your services using the hashtag. Fresh to the game and need help on a boss? Do a social shout out including the hashtag and see if an experienced Hunter’s in the area to lend you their expertise.

We can’t stop smiling
Watching a Nintendo Direct presentation is like going to see your favorite band in concert. You have a basic idea of what this is going to sound like, but you’re still hoping to hear your favorite song. And many Nintendo fans got to hear their favorite song last night.
Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct had a lot of news, but very little of it was truly surprising or worthy of an extended reaction. Nintendo spent a lot of time filling out the library of the Switch and talking about 3DS games that will probably do well without lighting the world on fire; it’s not like Captain Toad has wide appeal outside of Nintendo diehards. Things were slowing down a bit, which was a relief for those of us covering the rapid-fire announcements and reveals.
But there was one last announcement at the end, and it was everything we had been hoping for.
It was Smash. And the crowd went wild.
That was the scene from the Nintendo World Store in New York City during the live announcement, and the sense of joy and excitement from the crowd feels like a ray of sunlight in world that often feels dark right now.
Here’s another angle of the same moment:
These videos created moments that look like art. Hum some tense music as you watch the first few moments of this gif, it’s a great effect:
The Super Smash Bros. announcement for the Nintendo Switch was the highlight of the evening, judging by videos like these and the reactions we saw from readers on our own site. It looks like Nintendo is playing the song everyone wanted to hear.

Sony’s upcoming PS4 zombie game Days Gone has been delayed. Having originally been scheduled for this year, the survival game will now launch in 2019. “We can confirm that Days Gone will now be releasing in 2019 and we will keep you updated on the launch date,” Sony told GameSpot. The company did not mention why the game has been delayed.
Sony Worldwide Studio president Shuhei Yoshida had previously stated the game would launch at some point in 2018, though it was not clear–and still isn’t–at what point in the year that would be. Not much of the game has been shown off so far; audiences have simply seen a glimpse of the same section played during the day and at night.

Battle of the iconic icons
Although Far Cry 5 will see its brand of gun-toting carnage relocated to a disquieting county in Montana, the game’s post-release DLC is a toybox of scenarios. Not only will FC5’s add-on campaigns feature war-torn Vietnam, zombie mayhem and even outer space, but Ubisoft has announced the game’s map editor will revisit the publisher’s back catalogue.
Renamed Far Cry Arcade, the editor will allow players to build their own single and multiplayer maps out of assets from previous Far Cry titles as well as other Ubisoft games, such as Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs, allowing players to make their own adventures featuring items and settings from the aforementioned games. Maybe we’ll get an Ezio vs that-guy-from-Watch-Dogs death match (but probably not.)
The Far Cry Arcade is part of Far Cry 5′s Season Pass, which also includes single-player campaigns Lost on Mars, Hours of Darkness and Dead Living Zombies.
Far Cry 5 launches on PS4, PC and Xbox One March 27.

The price is nice. The zombies you’ll encounter? Not so much.
Microsoft has confirmed that State of Decay 2, the zombie-survival RPG from Undead Labs, will release on May 22 for the Xbox One family of consoles as well as Windows PC as a Play Anywhere title. It will also be available that day on Xbox Game Pass. Furthermore, Microsoft also confirmed a price point of $29.99 for the standard edition and $49.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
On the subject of the lower-than-expected price, Microsoft GM of Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg said, “Our goal is to build a long-term relationship with the State of Decay community and to foster deeper experiences with the franchise. We believe State of Decay 2 accomplishes this goal by immersing fans in the ultimate zombie survival fantasy, and we want to give more players the opportunity to join in and experience this unique game.”

In September, Nintendo crushed hearts across the world by declaring that Mario was no longer a plumber. This week, the publisher has remedied that horrible mistake, changing Mario’s bio to note that he is, in fact, a plumber.
Previously, as translated by Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft, the official Japanese Mario bio had read: “All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago.”
This week, though, fans on the Nintendo subreddit noticed that the bio has changed. Now, as translated by Kotaku’s Tim Rogers (brackets his), it reads:
Has a sunny disposition; is popular with everyone. He gets along super-well with his younger twin brother Luigi. They’re a famous combo. Has a universal knack for sports—from tennis to baseball, from soccer to car racing, he can do it all and look cool doing it.
His occupation is plumber. However, his activities don’t stop there. He loves Princess Peach. If she is ever in trouble, he will go to help her no matter what [he will drop whatever he is doing if she needs help; literally “no matter what time it is, he will go to help her”].
With his specialty jump and various power-ups, he opposes the mischief-making Koopa [Bowser].
Finally, our long international nightmare is over. Mario is a plumber again. May the Year of Luigi continue forever.

According to PlayStation.Blog.Europe
From Software’s brutal but brilliant action horror is an essential play for PS4 owners, but it doesn’t make life easy for newcomers. Bloodborne refuses to ease you in gently – it comes straight out of the block with its fangs bared and claws out. Not to worry though: we’ve got your back. For those experiencing the game for the first time courtesy of its inclusion in PS Plus this month, here’s what you need to know to survive your first few grueling hours exploring Yharnam’s deadly streets.
1. Don’t worry about dying – you’re supposed to
Your first steps into Yharnam are brutal. This is for a reason.
Almost immediately upon starting the game you’ll be trapped in a tiny room with a hulking werewolf. Armed with just your fists and the tiniest of health bars, odds seems stacked against you. Embrace death; the game uses it to introduce you to the Hunter’s Dream, the one safe spot in the game that you’ll return to to upgrade weapons and buy items over the course of your journey.
2. Look for shortcuts and Lanterns
Yharnam is huge, but fully exploring every area will reveal:
Shortcuts
Tight passageways, ladders and doorways that once found and opened, will allow you to quickly travel between areas.
Lanterns
The glow of a Lantern will become a welcome sight, letting you save and upgrade.
Stationed in every area, these allow you to return the Hunter’s Dream voluntarily to stock up on essential supplies, fortify weapons and replenish your health (and on exiting, let you return to any Lantern you’ve unlocked).
3. Choose your beginning weapons
You’ll have to choose one of three melee weapons, and one of two long-range weapons. Each melee weapon has two forms, giving you options for single encounters or crowd control
The unchosen weapons will be added to the Hunter’s Dream store later, but you’ll be stuck with your first choice for a while. Here’s what they do.
Melee weapons
Each weapon has two forms. The whip version of the Threaded Cane is great for crowd control.
Hunter Axe is slow, but powerful (and will quickly drain your stamina). Its second form makes it a two-handed monster.
Threaded Cane is the reverse, a fast weapon that doesn’t deal much damage. As a cane you can stab or wield it like a rapier. In its second, whip-like form, it can strike multiple, close by enemies.
Saw Cleaver sits in the middle with average speed and damage. Its extends for its second form – like a giant flick knife -making it great for crowd control.
Long-range weapons
Long-ranged weapons can attract or parry enemies (when timed right).
The Hunter Blunderbuss is powerful at close-quarters
The Hunter Pistol isn’t as strong, but better for long range (mainly to attract enemies).
4. Learn to dodge, rally and parry
Unlike Dark Souls, where you can cower behind your shield and play defensively, Bloodborne demands that you get on the front foot and take the fight to your enemies. Here’s what’s important to know about combat:
Respect your stamina
As you attack, dodge or run, you’ll eat into your on-screen stamina bar (the green one). Run out of stamina and you’re exposed to attack. Make sure your hits count, create distance when you need to recover and don’t get too greedy.
Parrying and the powerful visceral riposte
You can also parry enemies using your long range weapon, but it’s tricky as it has to be timed perfectly. Wait for the enemies to initiate an attack – draw back an arm or raise a weapon above their head for example – and then, just as they’re about to strike, shoot them with your pistol.Get it right and you’ll interrupt their attack and leave them open to a ‘visceral’ riposte. It’s a little bit trickier to pull off, but if you do, it’ll deal massive damage to the opponent – best off all, many bosses can be parried as well.
Recover lost HP with rallying
One unique mechanic to be aware of is ‘rallying’: whenever you take a hit in Bloodborne, you have a short window wherein, if you attack back quick enough, you’ll regain some – or even most – of your lost HP. It can save on healing items, so make sure you give as good as you get.
5. Use pebbles to lure enemies and pick them off separately
Mobs can easily overwhelm you. Pick off stragglers to shift things in your favour.
There are huge mobs of enemies roaming Yharnam’s streets. Wade in and you’ll quickly die.
You can pick up pebbles from downed enemies, or purchase them from the Bath Messengers in the Hunter’s Dream. Toss them at straggling enemies to draw them away from the group and deal with them one-on-one.
Divide and conquer is key: you can also use pistol shots, molotovs or even a cheeky slash in the back to lure off single enemies and break up groups.
6. Buy, loot and equip new weapons and gear
You’ll start the game empty-handed, wearing only frayed clothing. You’re exposed; your first objective should be to hunt down better gear.
You’ll be given a starting set of weapons on your first visit to the Hunter’s Dream, but make sure you search for proper hunter’s armour (either in the sewers below Yharnam or by speaking to the Bath Messengers in the Hunter’s Dream) and pick up additional gear like firepaper and molotovs to even the odds against tougher opponents.
Without these, the going will be much tougher, so if you feel like you’re really struggling, check your equipment and clothing to see if you can upgrade.
7. Retrieving Blood Echoes (don’t be afraid to run)
Each beast you slay in Bloodborne will reward you with a unique currency called ‘Blood Echoes’ which will accumulate as you fight through the game. You’ll use them for everything, from buying new gear and upgrading weapons to leveling your character. There’s one catch, though: if you die, those Blood Echoes will drop right where you fall and the only way to retrieve them is to return to that location without dying again (they’ll be gone for good if so).
If you’ve had a particularly gruelling run and were carrying a huge number of Blood Echoes, this can be truly heartbreaking. Sometimes the best course of action is to simply run. Keep one eye on your stamina and sprint past enemies to get back to where you were. Once you’ve collected your Blood Echoes, you can fight your way to the next shortcut or Lantern and cash-in your rewards.
8. Don’t fight Father Gascoigne first
Father Gascoigne can frustrate. Avoid this encounter until you’re more comfortable with combat.
Yharnam’s labyrinth paths mean your journey’s not linear. As a a result, your first ‘boss’ encounter may be in a gravestone-filled cemetery against the insanely fast Father Gascoigne. Back track for now. Instead, make the hulking Cleric Beast your first boss. It’s still a tough fight, but the giant is slightly slower, telegraphs its attacks earlier and, as the battle is on an empty bridge, the area layout isn’t going to cause you problems.
The Cleric Beast is tough, but it’s the easier first boss encounter.
9. Invest in your character: leveling and fortification
If you’re finding your weapons really aren’t dealing enough damage or enemies are hitting back way too hard, it might mean you need to power up a little. Blood Stone Shards found scattered throughout Yharnam can be used, along with Blood Echoes, to increase the power of – or fortify – your weapons.
Blood Echoes can also be used to increase the power of your character. After stumbling upon your first boss (whether or not you beat them) you’ll be rewarded with a single point of ‘Insight’. This currency has many effects and uses in the game, but it’s first is to awaken the Plain Doll in the Hunter’s Dream. Once awake, she can ‘channel’ your Blood Echoes, allowing you to invest points in your character, increasing health, dexterity, strength and other attributes.
10. Use the summoning bells for multiplayer
Enemy health bars will adjust to reflect extra Hunters in the mix, but co-op has benefits.
A hunter is never alone… If you really struggle with a particular level or a boss, or if you’re simply the kind of person to think “the more the merrier” you can use your Beckoning Bell – picked up early into the game – to summon helpful hunters for the cost of one Insight.
Doing so will open your world and connect you to players who have offered to assist in the same area. Getting Insights to summon other players can be a little tricky early on, but you will get your first Insights by encountering bosses for the first time or consuming the item Madman’s Knowledge. If you prefer to play with a friend rather than a stranger, you can both decide on a common password in the settings under Network.
Of course, the bosses’ health will be slightly adjusted but cooperation is always a lot of fun in Bloodborne. Be wary however, opening your world to friendly hunters might also attract unwanted attention from blood-starved Hunters… If you get a notification that an adversary has invaded your world, prepare to fight it out (or hide).
11. Other players have left notes for you
Keep an eye out for these little guys.
If you play online, you will come across messages scattered on the floor and held by tiny skeletons. They are called the Messengers, and the notes they’re holding are messages left there for you by other players. These can often warn you of a trap or even give you tips on how to defeat a particular enemy, but always exercise caution. Some players might purposely lead you to traps just for the fun of it!
These messages can be rated Fine or Foul by using the DualShock 4’s touchpad. If you want to leave a message to other players, you can use the Notebook to do so. Other players will see your note in their world and if they rate it as Fine, you’ll instantly recover a bit of health no matter where you are.
On top of the Messengers, you will sometimes come across the ghosts of other players. These Sceptres can give you insight on how other players have met their cruel fate around where you’re currently standing. This can help you figure out the position of a trap or a hidden enemy, so checking them often can prove insightful.
12. Stick with it!
Bloodborne goes against gaming convention by making your initial forays on Yharnam’s streets one horrific death after another. Sometimes you’ll maybe only make a few more steps than in your previous attempt. This is part of the Bloodborne experience. The game’s built to hammer home that you can never be complacent, to always respect every enemy encounter and always be aware of your surroundings. The game doesn’t get any easier; but importantly, you get better. Before too long you’ll look back and laugh at your early struggles!

Infected now available on consoles
Developer Treyarch just released an update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, the studio’s 2015 entry in the series, adding a new game mode and a new map.
The new game mode is Infected, which first appeared in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and later appeared in Ghosts, Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. Here’s Treyarch’s official description of the mode as it appears in Black Ops 3:
At the start of a match, one player is randomly chosen as the first infected whose goal is to infect the other players. Once downed, players respawn as infected, slowly increasing the size of the horde. Infect all players, or survive until time runs out to win.
Black Ops 3’s new map is Redwood Snow, a snow-covered version of the existing map Redwood. “Enter the snowcapped landscape of Redwood Snow to experience something colder from the map you know and love,” Treyarch said in a set of patchnotes released today. The update also includes new themes for Black Ops 3’s specialists.
The update is intriguing, and not only because it’s a content update for a two-and-a-half-year-old Call of Duty game. Treyarch has a history of dropping teases about upcoming Call of Duty games in older titles. The studio teased Infinite Warfare in Black Ops 3’s version of the Nuketown map in 2016. Players haven’t discovered a comparable teaser in today’s update yet, but they’re already looking for hints in little details like in-game license plates.
Treyarch is confirmed to be behind this year’s Call of Duty game, which is reportedly Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. According to a report from Charlie Intel, Black Ops 4 merchandise has already started to appear in GameStop’s product database.
Call of Duty games are traditionally revealed in late April or early May, so if Activision and Treyarch stay true to their plans, it won’t be long before we see what the next Black Ops game looks like.

Most notably, Overwatch players will be happy to know Widowmaker is getting a Kerrigan skin (not to be confused for the currently available Nova skin, based on StarCraft’s other infamous sniper). Other bonuses in Blizzard’s games include:
Diablo III: A Battelcruiser pet.
Hearthstone: A StarCraft-themed Tavern Brawl sometime during the month.
Heroes of the Storm: StarCraft-themed Portraits and Brawls.
StarCraft Remastered: A new console skin and a sale from March 6-20.
StarCraft II: Console skins, portraits, an achievement and decals.
Blizzard also teased another StarCraft-themed hero will be joining Heroes of the Storm soon, though they did not announce who.
Additionally, fans can catch documentary-style feature called StarCraft is Life: A 20th Anniversary Celebration, as well as a commemorative livestream on March 31.

After a leak last week claimed the new Battlefield will be set in World War II, a new report has now seemingly brought more details to light on the upcoming shooter. GamesBeat originally leaked Battlefield V–as the game is rumored to be titled–and it has now followed up with more information about the game’s campaign and mechanics.
Firstly, the site claims Battlefield V’s single-player mode will include a number of different stories packed into one overarching campaign. Battlefield 1 had a similar system of having you control a number of different protagonists to gain different perspectives on the war, and this is something DICE apparently wants to do again with the second World War. It’s also important to note that GamesBeat says the title “Battlefield V” may simply be a placeholder, and that it was also used for Battlefield 1 when that game was in development.
If EA does return to WWII, it will be the first in the series set during that era for a while: the last game set during the conflict was 2009’s Battlefield 1943. The publisher is yet to comment on the recent rumors, but it has confirmed a new Battlefield game is coming this year and that it will be playable at EA Play in June. Given that’s the case, we’ll likely find out more about the game soon.

Last week, Diablo fans got excited when the game’s publisher, Blizzard, appeared to hint that a version of the game would be coming to Nintendo Switch. The company later quashed the rumors by saying, “We can assure you we’re not that clever.” Now, a new report claims the long-running action-RPG series is coming to Nintendo’s hybrid console after all.
Eurogamer says its sources have informed the site that yes, Diablo is coming to Switch–specifically, it will be a port of Diablo III that makes its way to the device. The report does not state whether Diablo III’s Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer expansions would be included in the port and does not mention a release date. An official announcement is still months away, the site says.
The news comes as something of a surprise after Blizzard said last week that the tweet–which showed a Diablo-themed light being switched on and off–was “meant to be a fun community engagement piece” and that the company has “nothing to announce” regarding the series coming to Switch.

Right here you’ll find our selection of the best Minecraft mods. Mods are how you get the most out of Minecraft, no matter what you download. It could be simple things like improving the lighting or getting a few extra frames, all the way to entirely new worlds and different ways to play. But be warned, not all mods are compatible with the latest version of Minecraft, and some require the installation of legacy versions of Forge to run. Thankfully, installing older mods isn’t all that hard. Most mods come with instructions, but if they don’t, we’ve got a mini-guide to get you up and running.
These mods are all brilliant on their own, of course, but it’s worth noting that they might conflict with each other a bit if you try and install several at once. If you do struggle with that or other issues, consider trying a preconfigured modpack out instead—the launchers provided by Feed the Beast and the Technic Platform are one of the easiest ways to quickly and cleanly get playing modded Minecraft.
Here are our picks:
Millénaire
[1.7.10]
How many times have you explored a new area only to be met with nothing but vast emptiness? The Millénaire mod fixes that by introducing a wealth of new content into spaces where there’d usually be nothing. Villagers are replaced by human men, women, and children, instead of the bog-standard villager. Even villages have had a makeover to incorporate 11th-century Norman, North Indian and Mayan themes. Grab it here.
Fossil and Archaeology revival mod
[1.17.10]
If there’s one thing missing from Minecraft it’s dinosaurs. Who doesn’t want to ditch creepers in favour of riding around on a T-Rex? Not only is there a massive amount of dinosaurs to spawn in creative, but in survival, the player can hunt down fossils and bring these forgotten beasts back to life. As well as a texture overhaul, there’s also a new mob boss in the Anu for those looking to put their prehistoric skills to the test. Grab it here.
Instant Massive Structures
[1.8.8, 1.8, 1.8.1, 1.9, 1.7.10]
Okay, okay, so this one may be cheating. We’ve all seen monstrous builds online which make our 5×5 dirt house pail in comparison. But what happens if you want to turn the tables? What happens if you want an enormous city in a matter of seconds? That’s where the Instant Structures mod comes in. Simply cycle through the creative menu, drop a block, right click it, and a building will magically spawn. Structures range from castles, to houses, all the way to tram stations. Yeah, sure, it’s technically cheating, but we won’t tell anyone. Grab it here.
The Lost Cities
[1.10, 1.11, 1.12]
Something has ended life as we know it. Buildings are in disrepair, and everyone has vanished, or so it seems. The Lost Cities, as the foreboding name suggests, spawns you into a city forgotten by time. The goal? See how long you can survive this post-apocalyptic wasteland without succumbing to death. If you fancy taking the survival one step further, this mod also interlinks with the Biomes O Plenty mod, meaning you’ll have a lot of stunning new areas to explore alongside the empty cities. Grab it here.
Biosphere
[1.7.10, 1.7.2]
Creating a biosphere, of decent size, takes around eight-hours, give or take. I know this because I spent eight-painstaking-hours making one. By the end, I wanted to chuck Minecraft into a nearby volcano. Making something spherical rather than a jagged diamond isn’t easy. Thankfully, the Biospheres mod removes all the annoying obstacles and spawns you into a world where the sky is overrun with various floating biomes. Just don’t fall off, yeah? Grab it here.
The Aether
[1.7.3]
The Aether (pronounced “ee-ther”) is the opposite of the Nether. While the Nether is seen as Minecraft’s equivalent of hell, the Aether is a sort of heavenly realm. Once transported via a portal, you’ll find yourself above the clouds surrounded by gorgeous, newly-designed floating islands. There’s also new mobs, including flying cows and flying pigs, some new boss enemies, as well as new block types to play with and new-fangled loot to find. Grab it here.
Optifine
[1.8.1]
Minecraft doesn’t scale too well to the power of fast or slow machines. It runs surprisingly poorly on low-end laptops, and a high-end rig can’t do much with its extra oomph. Enter Optifine—a mod that not only makes Minecraft run faster but also look far better. It supports HD textures, smooth lighting, and more, and framerate doubling is not uncommon. It’s one of the first things I usually add when installing Minecraft. Grab it here.
Twilight Forest
[1.7.10]
Love adventuring? This mod adds a new, densely-forested dimension shrouded in perpetual twilight that hides both valuable treasures and dangerous monsters. Throw a diamond into a pool of water surrounded by flowers to create a portal there, then spend a while roaming around. You’ll find hedge mazes, hollow hills, enchanted groves, glaciers, lich towers and more with rich rewards for those that delve the deepest. Grab it here.
Biomes O’Plenty
[1.7.10]
Since the ‘Update That Changed The World‘ in late 2013, there’s been a bit more diversity in Minecraft worlds. But Biomes O’Plenty adds vastly more—75 to be exact—from brushland and coral reefs, through lavender fields and ominous woods, to tundra and wasteland. You’ll need to create a new world to use it (make sure to select the ‘Biomes O’Plenty’ world generation option), but it’s worth it to see corners of Minecraft that you’ve never seen before.
Botania
[1.7.10]
Some mods add powerful magical items. Others add intricate machinery. Botania just adds flowers—but wow, what flowers. Flowers that heal you. Flowers that feed animals. Flowers that turn hostile mobs against each other. Flowers that eat cake. Oh, and did I mention that you’ve can also use flowers to create a magical portal to a world of elves? If you want to try something wildly different from most other mods, Botania is it. Grab it here.
Inventory Tweaks, NotEnoughItems & Waila
[1.7.10]
This trio of mods are essential quality-of-life improvements, especially when you’ve got loads of mods installed at the same time. Inventory Tweaks allows you to sort your chests with a single click and automatically replace tools when they break. NotEnoughItems provides you with a searchable list of all the blocks available in the game, and the recipes for crafting them, and Waila lets you point your cursor at an unfamiliar blocks to find out what it is. Grab them here, here and here respectively.

Square Enix has released a “preview” trailer for Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth dubbed “First Teaser Trailer 2018.”
It is not clear what exactly the teaser trailer is for. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a 2006-released PSP port of the 1999-released PlayStation title Valkyrie Profile.
The description of the video reads, “In 2018, the goddess descends.” The Japanese text in the trailer reads, “You have the right to live. I am a selector of souls. I choose human souls like I’m picking flowers!? What is a Valkyrie!? Am I a god of death?”
A Twitter account was also launched. The first tweet simply reads, “Starting today, we will share information on Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth #FirstTweet #ValkyrieProfile #VPLenneth.”
It is possible Square Enix is planning a re-release of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for current generation platforms, PC, and / or mobile. However, that is only speculation as the company did not release any information.

The ESRB has announced that it will soon affix a new label on physical games that feature a variety of paid in-game purchases, including loot boxes, season passes, and DLC. In addition, the game-ratings organization has launched a new site designed to inform parents about in-game purchases and how to enable parental tools to prevent their kids from racking up in-game charges without their permission.
The announcement follows high-profile blowbacks on loot crates, which have included calls from politicians for the organization to more closely monitor those kinds of in-game purchases.
The ESRB isn’t flagging loot crates in particular, but they’re included in a blanket label, which includes “bonus levels, skins, surprise items (such as item packs, loot boxes, mystery awards), music, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency, subscriptions, season passes, upgrades (e.g., to disable ads) and more.”
GameInformer‘s Take Considering that virtually every contemporary game features at least one of these types of in-game purchases, it seems like a way for the group to seemingly address parental and political concerns without diving headfirst into the loot-crate controversy.

Hello everyone! I am Ryozo Tsujimoto, producer on Monster Hunter: World.
At the launch of Monster Hunter: World, we released a free collaboration event quest where hunters were able to make their Palico companions look like a machine from Horizon Zero Dawn. Starting February 28th at 0:00 UTC, a new free Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration event quest will be available. This time, you’ll be able to play as Aloy herself once you collect the materials to forge the unique themed gear! The quest will be live until March 15th at 23:59 UTC. If you missed the first event quest period to get the Watcher-themed Palico gear, we have good news for you today. Event quests are on a rotating schedule so you will have an opportunity to try out the quest at a later date. Please stay tuned for more information on when it will return.
In this brand new collaboration event quest, you receive a request from the Nora Tribe chief to hunt down a giant Anjanath in the Ancient Forest. Many captivating machines appear in Horizon Zero Dawn, but the one that made the biggest impression on the Monster Hunter: World development team was the Thunderjaw. Anjanath has a very similar skeletal structure to the Thunderjaw, so we felt it was the best fit to be the main adversary in the quest, but not just any Anjanath would do. This Anjanath is at a scale that many players will have never before encountered, and your typical attacks may not reach its height. We hope hunters will take on this challenge and enjoy a fresh new experience.
If you complete this event quest, you’ll obtain the Nora Brave Trophy item that gives you access to crafting the Aloy α armor set and Aloy’s Bow weapon. You cannot mix and match the full armor set with other pieces of gear, but unlike cosmetic armor sets, there are skills tied to the set that can also be upgraded. For example, the Aloy α set has the Marathon Runner skill which fits the character Aloy’s image perfectly. This is a very effective and useful armor set. It’s important to note that this set is not exclusive to female hunters! If you’re playing as a male hunter, equipping the Aloy α set will also change your appearance to Aloy.
To participate in this free event quest, you must be Hunter Rank 11 or higher. You may need to complete the quest multiple times to obtain enough materials to craft all the Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration gear, so jump on in with friends and take down that giant Anjanath! Then swing on by the Smithy in Astera and start crafting all the gear.
Many of our staff are fans of Horizon Zero Dawn and have great respect for it. Discussions on the collaboration first began when Capcom pitched the idea to Sony. From there, we spoke with Guerrilla Games and received a wholehearted approval from them. We shared some of our original design concepts with Guerrilla Games and received some ideas from them as well. It was a really smooth collaboration between each of our teams. It felt like such a natural fit to collaborate with Guerilla Games to allow hunters in Monster Hunter: World to experience the game through the eyes of the powerful hunter Aloy. We hope you all enjoy this great collaboration content!

“Cyberpunk is our new Witcher 3, but even more ambitious,” CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said. “Our goal is to establish a new blockbuster franchise from the beginning. We work [in a] new universe, futuristic universe. We believe it’s very appealing to players, not only RPG players — but this is [a] true RPG, like Witcher, like Witcher 3, for mature audiences. It’s handcrafted, detailed, of course open-world, with open-ended gameplay.”
“Great game, more ambitious than Witcher 3, and we believe that we can aim [at] more ambitious business goals as well — of course, still having gamer-centric focus and quality focus as a main priority,” he explained.
At the seminar, he also shot down any hopes for a Witcher 4, a sentiment CD Projekt has expressed before.
“We can’t create Witcher 4, because that was a trilogy from the beginning,” he said. “No one said that one day we won’t decide to develop something in the Witcher universe. But now we’re focusing on Cyberpunk and Gwent.”
Speaking of Gwent, Kicinski touched on the success of the Witcher 3 digital card game spinoff Gwent and sales on the GOG platform.
“Recently, in the first half of 2017, we enjoyed a really huge increase of our own internal sales via GOG distribution channel,” Kicinski said. “A big part of that was coming from the Gwent project.”

A Way Out, the co-op game from the creator of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, is almost here. The game recently crossed a major milestone, as Josef Fares announced on Twitter that it went “gold.” That means development on the title has finished.
“I can’t even describe my excitement,” Fares said on Twitter.
#awayout has gone golden. I can't even describe my excitement. Get ready on March 23.
A Way Out launches on March 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game is only playable in co-op, but there will be a way to pretty much ensure you have someone to play with. At The Game Awards back in December, publisher EA announced a “friends pass free trial” for the game that lets you play the full title if your friend owns it.
There are a few caveats: You need a constant internet connection and an EA account to use this trial. Also, your friend must be on the same platform, and you’ll need PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold if you’re playing on console.
Set in the ’70s, A Way Out focuses on the story of two convicts who are on the run after a prison escape. You can see the latest gameplay trailer in the embed above.
Fares, who is also a film director, made headlines during The Game Awards when he went off-script during a live segment and proclaimed, “F**k the Oscars.” He also gave the middle finger to the camera in an awkward interview with host Geoff Keighley.
At the awards show, spoke passionately about A Way Out. “I live, breathe, s*** this game. It is everything for me,” he told GameSpot. “Even if the whole word told me this is s***, I still know in my heart it’s not, it’s great. I know when people play it, they will understand what I mean, what’s it doing.”
Since A Way Out is published by EA, it stands to reason that a trial for the game will be playable ahead of time for EA/Origin Access subscribers. Typically, subscribers can play a portion of upcoming EA games around 5 days before their public release, though it’s not immediately clear if this will be the case for A Way Out.

Recent years have seen Square Enix release more and more of its classic catalog on PC. The results have in some cases been mixed, with players taking issue with the visual overhauls that some games have seen. Out of nowhere, the company has surprise-launched one of its most acclaimed games of all-time, Chrono Trigger, which is now available on Steam.
Square Enix describes this as the “definitive version” of the RPG. “[N]ot only have the controls been updated, the graphics and sound have also been revamped to make your adventure even more fun and enjoyable to play,” the Steam description states. And before you worry about the visual makeovers that have plagued some other RPG re-releases, this one mostly maintains the original look. Alongside higher-resolution graphics, composer Yasunori Mitsuda has supervised updates to “all songs” to make for an “even more immersive gameplay experience.”
Also included are the Dimension Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons from the DS release, which is widely considered to be the best version of the game available. This Steam edition also features support for keyboard or gamepad controls, as well as an autosave function that activates as you roam the map. Despite all of this, it appears this version is based on the mobile release, much to the chagrin of fans.
As you’d expect for a game originally released on SNES in 1995, the system requirements are quite modest. It’s Windows-only, at least for now, and requires only an Intel Core i3, 4 GB of RAM, an Intel HD Graphics 530, and 2 GB of space. Resolutions range from 800×600 up to 1080p.
This version is available on Steam now for $15/£12. A limited edition is available from now until April 2. Those who purchase it will be entitled to some bonus content, including downloadable music, Mitsuda’s digital liner notes, and six PC wallpapers.
Chrono Trigger is still heralded as one of the great RPGs of all time, thanks to its excellent combat system, time-travel mechanics, and great soundtrack, among other things. Its development was led by Dragon Quest’s Yuji Horii and Final Fantasy’s Hironobu Sakaguchi, who at the time worked for the competing RPG developers Square and Enix (before the two companies joined to form Square Enix). The game has now been enhanced and re-released on a number of platforms, though it’s still never received a full remake.

Yesterday, Sega announced it had launched the demo version of Yakuza 6 for PlayStation 4.
Unfortunately, in North America at least, Sega accidentally released the full version of Yakuza 6 instead.
While labelled as a demo, this trial version is deliberately the entire game – a 30GB download – so if you go on to purchase the full thing you can continue playing where you left off.
In Europe and Australia, players are instructed their trial has ended after reaching a certain point in the demo.
In North America, this did not happen.
Several hours later, Sega realised the error and pulled the demo from the US PlayStation Store.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Sega admitted that “some were able to use the demo to unlock the full game”:

Metal Gear Survive is a strange game in and of itself, but the context surrounding Metal Gear as a whole makes it even stranger. We’re stuck in this messy transitional period between the Kojima-led games of old and whatever direction Konami eventually settles on for the future of the series.
For now, though, we have Survive. Attentive fans have noticed something peculiar in the game’s opening moments. During an early cutscene, you’re shown a list of code-named soldiers alongside your own custom-named character and, as laid out by Michael Yurko on Twitter, there’s a hidden message.
Just take the first letter from each of the the underlined words and put ’em all together.
The end result? “KJP Forever.” Or, Kojima Productions forever.
It’s worth noting that these specifically-named characters are the wandering Mother Base soldiers from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. So while the “KJP forever” Easter egg is a holdover, to some extent, the folks working on Survive went to the trouble of listing the names in the correct order.
Another fun one: the AWOL soldiers at the bottom of the list are named Bastard Yota and Cunning Yuji. That’s surely a nod to Metal Gear Survive director Yota Tsutsumizaki and producer Yuji Korekado.

Oh, unholy day. Overwatch’s floating monk Zenyatta has found his feet and it is entirely unsettling to watch.
So far, we’ve only seen Zenyatta hover cross-legged a few feet above the ground. Yesterday, Blizzard’s Twitter account noticed an Overwatch League sign demanding “Let Zen Walk.” Well, be careful what you ask for. Blizzard came back with this:
Somewhere between a Russian squat dancer and a bad two-legged frog, Zenyatta finally walks. It looks ridiculous and will be imprinted in my mind forever.

As announced in the latest patch notes, the latest update for Siege is supposed to make Blitz faster – but not this much faster. Since hitting test servers, players have noted that the operator has been moving at blazing speeds, and Ubisoft have confirmed that the change wasn’t supposed to be so extreme.
Community developer Justin Kruger says on Reddit that following player reports they “have found a data error that made him faster than initially intended. There is a mobility modifier for all shields that reduces the operator speed, and this was not active for Blitz at the launch of the Test Server. This will be fixed.”

Lost Wage Rampage is a new riot grrl driving game about stealing what you’re owed and destroying everything else.
Out today, Lost Wage Rampage is as punk as games get. It’s about two angry mall clerks who plunder their local mall after discovering their male colleagues’ paychecks are larger than theirs. They roll their orange convertible over whatever they want—shirts, computer hardware—and scoop up cash. If cop cars catch up to them three times, the game is over. A round lasts anywhere from thirty seconds to several minutes.
“Punk” isn’t just a hand-wavey way to say “mad.” Lost Wage Rampage is free on Itch.io, with the brevity and energy of a punk song and a vintage ‘00s Flash game vibe. It’s for the people, easy to pick up. It plays like Katamari Damacy, with obvious controls but labored steering. It’s unpolished, but artfully unpolished, like a patch-studded jacket. Its killer punk rock soundtrack helps make its case.

Lost Wage Rampage spits its message in your face. But it’s having fun while flipping off the gender pay gap. It’s a gut-punch of girl pwr that goes to show that fighting the system or whatever can bring people together.
Disclosure: I’ve met the game’s developer and designer several times.

The second season of Fornite: Battle Royale is nearly over, which means it’s time to prepare for season three. With that in mind, Epic have revealed details for the next season, and it looks like you’ll be heading to the stars.
Each season’s battle pass is themed, and based on Epic’s announcement, it looks as though season three will be space-themed. The image above shows a space-bound battle bus, with two space-suit clad characters diving towards the island.
If you’ve not yet experienced the battle pass, it’s a way to get exclusive loot just by playing Battle Royale. When you buy, you’ll instantly unlock a bunch of rewards, and as you play you’ll unlock more through a series of different reward tiers. The medieval-themed season two pass contained 70 reward tiers, but Epic have upped their game for season three, capping your rewards at 100 tiers. That’ll include six new outfits, three pickaxes, three new gliders, and more, as detailed below.
Despite the extra tiers, Epic say you’ll be able to unlock everything the pass has to offer in roughly the same amount of time, which they reckon is somewhere between 75-150 hours. If you want a head-start, however, you can buy the new Battle Bundle, which includes the pass but instantly unlocks the first 25 reward tiers, all for a discount of 40%.
You can get a better look at the breakdown of all the rewards on offer here, as well as more information about weekly challenges, and an FAQ.

Kai’Sa’s passive has two parts – Caustic Wounds adds stacks of Plasma, which deals bonus damage at a certain value. Living Weapon is similar to Kha’Zix’s ability to evolve his abilities.
Caustic Wounds:
Kai’Sa’s basic attacks mark enemies with Plasma, dealing increasing bonus magic damage. After a few successive attacks, the Plasma ruptures for a burst of damage based on the target’s missing health. Nearby allies’ immobilizing effects add stacks of Plasma.
Living Weapon:
Kai’Sa’s symbiote-suit adapts to her chosen attack style, evolving her abilities based on permanent stats gained from shop items and experience level.
Ithacan Rain (Q):
Kai’Sa releases a swarm of missiles evenly distributed among nearby enemies, with additional hits on the same target dealing slightly reduced damage.
Living Weapon: With enough bonus Attack Damage, Icathian Rain fires significantly more missiles.
Void Seeker (W):
Kai’Sa fires off a beam of Void energy, revealing the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage, and applying stacks of Plasma.
Living Weapon: With enough bonus Ability Power, Void Seeker deals more damage and partially refunds the cooldown on champion hit.
Supercharger (E):
Kai’Sa charges up, briefly increasing her movement speed but losing the ability to attack. After charging up, Kai’Sa whips out the big guns to increase her attack speed for a few seconds. Basic attacks reduce Supercharger’s cooldown.
Living Weapon: With enough bonus Attack Speed, Supercharger briefly grants true invisibility while charging up.
Killer Instinct (R):
Kai’Sa dashes at extremely high speed with long range to a location near an enemy champion marked with Plasma and briefly gains a damage-absorbing shield.
Kai’Sa works well on her own, stalking marked allies through the jungle, but also alongside her teammates – allied CC gives her the opportunity to use her ultimate to close gaps at high speed. Her Living Weapon passive means that you get massive power spikes on certain items, and while her abilities are powerful, Kai’Sa’s at her best when they’re threaded in between her auto-attacks. It’s early days yet, but she sounds a lot like a cross between the speed and mobility of Lucian with the assassin-potential of Kha’Zix or Rengar.

EA has announced that its much-rumoured remaster of developer Criterion’s classic Burnout Paradise is real and coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on March 16th.
Burnout Paradise Remastered, as it’s imaginatively titled, includes the original base game and the eight add-on packs released back in 2009 – Cops and Robbers, Legendary Cars, Burnout Bikes, Burnout Paradise Toys, Burnout Paradise Party, Boost Specials, and Cagney. It also includes the Big Surf Island expansion, which brought the titular landmass to the core map.
EA says that Burnout Paradise Remastered will feature a variety of technical enhancements on console, including high resolution textures and the option to experience Paradise City in 4K at 60FPS on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
Burnout Paradise Remastered will be available in both digital and physical forms and will cost £34.99 when it launches on console this March. It’s also due to arrive on PC via Origin “later this year”. Unlike the Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box which is currently on Steam, however, the new PC remaster will include the previously console-only Big Surf Island expansion.
If you’ve yet to experience Criterion’s classic Burnout Paradise, you might find Christian Donlan’s effusive words from a few years back to be a handy primer.

New details about Experiment 101’s open-world RPG BioMutant have been revealed – most prominently about the game’s bionic unlocks.
Speaking at PC Gamer Weekender, head of studio Stefan Ljungqvist hosted a presentation of the game, revealing new details in the process.
You can see much of what we’re about to discuss in the new BioMutant gameplay trailer, below:
He went into particular detail about the game’s bionics, unlockable items earned by helping certain characters in the world.
The presentation shows brief clips of gliding wings, a jetpack (which allows for ground pound area-of-effect attacks), a power fist that can be used for dashing attacks and, most inventively, a bow that fires arrows the user can grab onto, flying into cliff faces and creating climbing points.
There’s also mention of a mech that allows the player to survive in the Dead Zone, an area with no oxygen, as well as psychic powers such as telekinesis, levitation, and a bullet-deflecting bubble shield.
We’ve previously said that has the potential to be a fantasy Just Cause, and Ljungqvist’s talk helps build on that idea – not least when he mentions that the weapon customisation we previously saw can result in over 500,000 combinations.
He consistently mentions player freedom, the ability to combine powers and bionics to create ability combos, and even about leaving open the option for players to leverage mechanics to do things the developers didn’t think possible.
We’re sure to learn more about how deep that freedom goes before Biomutant is released this year.

According to Glixel Latest and Reviews and Interviews News
One day after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the governor of Kentucky is pointing a finger at violent video games.
During an interview with Leland Conway on WHAS Thursday morning, Republican Governor Matt Bevin said he’s heartbroken for the people of Florida, and blamed a “culture of death that is being celebrated” via violent video games, TV shows, and music.
“There are video games that, yes, are listed for mature audiences, but kids play them and everybody knows it, and there’s nothing to prevent the child from playing them,” Bevin said. “They celebrate the slaughtering of people. There are games that literally replicate and give people the ability to score points for doing the very same thing that these students are doing inside of schools, where you get extra points for finishing someone off who’s lying there begging for their life.”
“These are quote-unquote video games, and they’re forced down our throats under the guise of protected speech. It’s garbage. It’s the same as pornography. They have desensitized people to the value of human life, to the dignity of women, to the dignity of human decency.”
While Bevin didn’t call for an outright ban on video games when pressed, he said he thinks people need to question what value such things have in our society. “Why do we need a video game, for example, that encourages people to kill people?” he said. “Whether it’s lyrics, whether it’s TV shows, whether it’s movies, I’m asking the producers of these products, these video games and these movies, ask yourselves what redemptive value, other than shock value, other than the hope you’ll make a couple of bucks off it. At what price? At what price?”
Bevin made similar statements back in January after a shooting in his own state left two students dead and 18 injured at Marshall County High School. “We are desensitizing young people to the actual tragic reality and permanency of death,” he said in statement posted on Facebook. “This is a cultural problem.”
Following the Marshall shooting, controversial anti-gaming activist and disbarred Florida attorney Jack Thompson also suggested video games were to blame. He wrote letters to Gov. Bevin and Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rick Sanders accusing state police of stonewalling the investigation. Thompson also claimed he was told by Marshall County attorney Jeff Edwards the 15-year-old suspect in that case played violent video games and his grandmother had recently taken them away, according to the Paducah Sun. Thompson, who was disbarred for life from practicing law by the Supreme Court of Florida in 2009, made a name for himself in the 90s and 2000s through a series of failed lawsuits that attempted to connect violence in video games with real-world violence.
Fox & Friends also blamed video games – along with drugs and virtual reality – for the shooting.
Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce claimed that talking about firearms doesn’t get to the “core issue” of “the human condition.” She and the hosts of Fox & Friendsalso blamed drugs, virtual reality, and video games for the shooting.

The planet-conquering PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will get its third in-game map within the first half of this year – AKA, before the end of June.
A roadmap of game updates will be shared in March, developer Bluehole promised via a new Steam update today. Chief among these updates will be details of PUBG’s third map, following the Russia-set Erangel and the recent Central American-set Miramar.
Despite PUBG’s popularity, new features have been slow to trickle out in recent weeks and months – something especially notable when you compare the game to its big battle royale rival Fortnite, which has made a point of having a new feature or update every few weeks.
The long wait for fresh PUBG content is in part due to Bluehole’s recent focus on banning cheaters. More than a million accounts were banned in January alone.
“Early this year, development of some of the major features and systems was [sic] delayed as our focus shifted towards tightening our anti-cheat effort,” Bluehole wrote. “Also, due to other reasons, we have not been able to show you the team’s development roadmap for 2018.
“We would like to ask for our players’ generous understanding that despite the team’s eagerness to share what we have been planning and working on, the timing had to be changed. We do have a lot of exciting things that we want to share with you, including new content to provide more extensive battle royale experiences as well as improvements and modifications to create a deeper and more realistic gameplay.
“In March, the team will reveal what you can expect from us in the first half of 2018 in terms of our development and new content plans which, by the way, include a new map.”
It’s not the first we’ve heard of PUBG’s third map. Last year, Bluehole teased its location as being around the Adriatic Sea, with both a sandy coastline and snowy mountains.
Today’s blog post accompanies a new game update which fixes some bugs and makes a few other, minor changes. You’ll no longer be able to see the inside of the aeroplane at the start of a match, for example, but can check the number of remaining passengers via a new counter on the UI.
