Assassin’s Creed Origins’ non-combat Discovery Tour is out now

All games with impressive worlds should have non-combat tourist modes. Slaughtering beasts and baddies is great fun, but I love clearing an area of enemies and then returning to their natural habitats with the luxury of peace and quiet.

Assassin’s Creed Origins adds its educational The Discovery Tour today with this in mind.

As outlined last year, the combat-free mode will allow players to “explore the rich world of Ancient Egypt” freely, or follow the 75 themed tours developer Ubisoft has installed around the game’s world.

“With the Discovery Tour by Assassin’s Creed: Ancient Egypt, we give everyone interested in Ancient Egypt the chance to enjoy its beauty and the realisation that video games can be a source of inspiring knowledge,” says the game’s creative director Jean Guesdon in a statement.

As you might expect, The Discovery Tour has a trailer. Look and learn:

“We’ve been in touch with teachers from the very first instalment of Assassin’s Creed games,” explains Maxime Durand, one of Ubisoft’s in-house historians. “Many of them already used the games during their History classes but soon came to realise that what they needed was an easily accessible educative tool based in our historical reconstructions.

“With the Discovery Tour by Assassin’s Creed: Ancient Egypt, you can visualise and understand thousands of things from Egyptian history in their actual context. As both a game and a learning tool, it is quite a unique asset for teachers to integrate as part of their history classes.”

Assuming you already own Assassin’s Creed Origins, The Discovery Tour is free as part of the game’s 1.3.0 patch and is out now. If you’d like to give it whirl sans Origins itself, it’s available for £15.99 standalone.

That’s right, Level 100 in Sora’s home islands. You know, the extended tutorial where you’re supposed to get the hang of Kingdom Hearts and not where you’re supposed to spend 210 hours reaching Level 100.

Congrats to AaroneousGaming for reaching this amazing feat.

Final Fantasy XV’s Next Comrades Update Adds New Characters, Costumes, And More Next Month

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to http://www.GameInformer.com

Square Enix has dropped a trailer showcasing an upcoming update for Final Fantasy XV’s Comrades multiplayer mode.

The update, which hits March 6, adds a number of new outfits for players to wear, including more hairstyles, suits, silly outfits, and plated suits of armor. New attacks, weapons, spells, and bosses are also included, as well as new playable characters like Aranea, Iris, and Ravus. It also looks like it lets Chocobos fight a dragon, which I’m all totally in favor of. They can do it! I believe in them!

You can watch a trailer for the update below. For a look at how Final Fantasy XV has evolved over the course of its life cycle, check out our retrospective.

Bardock And Broly Are The First DLC Characters For Dragon Ball FighterZ

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to http://www.GameInformer.com

Bandai Namco has stayed relatively silent regarding which fighters would make it into Dragon Ball FighterZ via DLC. The latest issue of V-Jump magazine, however, reveals the first two downloadable combatants: Broly and Bardock.

For those not in the know, Broly is the one of the legendary Super Saiyans, who used to only appear once every 1,000 years or so, but later appeared whenever it was convenient for someone to power up in Dragon Ball Z. As anyone who has seen Broly in action might expect, he is much larger than most of the characters in the current cast, and his three-meter Meteor Attack is called “Gigantic Meteor.”

Bardock is Goku’s dad and looks just like him, which means players now have more Gokus to choose from than they can fit on a team. Like Adult Gohan, Bardock does not maintain his Super Saiyan form during most of the fight, but goes Super Saiyan during his Meteor Attack.

V-Jump did not announce a price or date for these individual characters, though the season pass, which unlocks eight additional characters, is $34.99.

It’s also important to point out that neither of these characters are Arale or Kid Goku, which means I am slightly disappointed.

‘Call Of Duty: Online’ Players Are Testing Out A Battle Royale Mode

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Forbes – Games

Could a Battle Royale mode be coming to the next Call of Duty game?

Call of Duty: Online is a free-to-play version of the popular competitive shooter designed specifically for the Chinese market, where the franchise’s traditional $60 plus map packs business model isn’t viable.*

Now, players in China are testing out an 18-player ‘Battle Royale’ mode which is currently in beta. Battle Royale is an increasingly popular video game sub-genre thanks to the enormous success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite. In this type of game, players enter a map, look for equipment and weapons, and try to outsmart and outlast everyone else. The last player standing wins.

This differs from the long-time Call of Duty mode ‘Free For All.’ In that mode, players face off against each other (without teams) and try to get the highest kill count. In FFA, players start with all their gear and spawn after death.

In Battle Royale, players have no starting gear and move carefully across the map as it slowly shrinks in size. Death is final and the last player standing can win without firing a shot—though it’s rare to win outright without at least killing the second to last player. Still, the mode rewards smart, careful play just as much as it does accuracy and reflexes.

Call Of Duty: Online’s version of this mode looks quite a bit different from PUBG or Fortnite. For one thing, rather than 100 players dropping from a plane (or a flying bus) just 18 players compete and each gets to choose their starting point on the map before the match begins. There’s also an announcer and a crowd cheering when one player kills another. It’s really going for that Hunger Games spectator vibe that this genre already elicits so well.

Check out some beta gameplay below:

As you can see, there’s the same shrinking circle here as you’d find in other Battle Royale games, slowly pushing players into a tighter, deadlier proximity. I think it looks like a blast, honestly, though that announcer is way over the top.

There are ways for Western players to download and play Call Of Duty: Online, but I’m hoping that this is just a testing grounds for a Battle Royale mode in future Call of Duty games, like this year’s game from Treyarch (which may or may not be Black Ops 4.)

While playing with 100 players on a huge map is fun, I think the same basic adrenaline rush could be achieved on smaller maps with much lower player counts. If anything, even winning matches would likely be shorter with less downtime. There’s pros and cons to that, but I think it could work well for a Western Call of Duty audience. And given that the excellent War Mode has been so well-received in 2017’s Call Of Duty: WW2, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Activision pushing out new modes like this. (Hopefully we get War Mode in future games because it really is a blast.)

In any case, let me know what you think on Twitter or Facebook. Thanks for reading!

*Given that Call of Duty rarely does all that well on PC in the West, Activision should probably release a version of Call of Duty: Online here for PC players. I imagine it would do quite well, though it would probably need to be tweaked quite a bit for a Western audience.

Sea of Thieves Will Add Microtransactions Around 3 Months After Release

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to IGN Video Games

Share.

“Emotional value, not mechanical value.”

By Joe Skrebels

Sea of Thieves will launch without microtransactions, but will add them in its first major content update, planned for around three months after release – but they’ll be for cosmetic rewards only, and won’t feature loot boxes.

During a visit to Rare, executive producer Joe Neate told IGN:

“Our focus at launch [is] on a great game experience. When we deliver this first major update, that’s when we’ll turn on the ability for players to spend money optionally.

“We thought long and hard about what’s right for our game experience, and the key thing we think is that it has to add to the fun, social nature of the game. So anything in this area will not impact power or progression, and you’ll always know what you’re getting – so that means no loot crates.”

Neate explains that there will be opportunities to earn paid currency through normal play. While the plans for how this will happen aren’t yet final, he suggests you could find items in the game world, or receive it as a reward after high-level quests.

The first paid content for the game will come in the form of pets. “It’ll either be on a shoulder, like a monkey, or like a cat on the ship”, explains Neate. “But it’ll kind of benefit everyone socially and emotionally. So if I’ve got a cat, I can pick up it up and look at it, or you can pick it up and run off with it. Obviously when you put it down it’ll come back.

“I really, really want to allow us to fire cats and other animals out of cannons. It’ll land on its feet, it’s a cat, it’ll be fine!”

Beyond that, Rare’s looking to include potions that can alter you cosmetically – like a draught that turns your character model old for a certain amount of time. The mission statement is that microtransaction items have “emotional value, not mechanical value.”

As for why the game has microtransactions at all, Neate puts it down to the increased costs of running a game that will continuously add content beyond launch:

“It’s always an interesting topic, but ultimately I have to look at the reality of running a game-as-service as a business. My goal and everyone else’s goal here is to have as many people as possible working on this, and just keep giving people reasons to return, reasons to have fun. We have to run that like a business, you need revenue coming in.”

As we covered in our new preview of the game, Sea of Thieves is seemingly set to receive far more free extra content than paid – aside from timed events and smaller additions, the first major update is primed to turn the base game’s endgame into its “start-game”.

Joe Skrebels is IGN’s UK News Editor, and he wants a skeleton parrot that screams the names of dead men. You know, fun stuff like that. Follow him on Twitter.

Instead of a new Assassin’s Creed in 2018, you’re probably getting more Origins DLC

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PCGamesN

assassins creed origins launch trailer

Ubisoft seem pretty set on a two-year turnaround for Assassin’s Creed going forward. The company’s CEO said that development would continue to focus on Assassin’s Creed Origins during 2018, making it unlikely we’ll get a new game this year.

You’re stuck with it for a while yet, so here’s our Assassin’s Creed Origins review.

Rumours that Ubisoft would abandon the annual release schedule for the freerunning franchise began at the beginning of 2016. Sure enough, we had to wait two years after the release of 2015’s syndicate for the release of Origins back in October. In February 2016, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that “the goal is not to automatically come back to an annual cycle.”

That’s clearly been upheld; in an earnings call yesterday, Guillemot said that Ubisoft would be focusing on ongoing support for Origins, and that the team would be launching a few more DLCs during the year. While not explicitly stating that there would be no new game this year, the focus on their most recent game is a pretty clear indication that we won’t be seeing any new assassins this year.

The Assassin’s Creed Origins DLCs will include the Discovery Tour, which comes out next week, and The Curse of the Pharaohs, which releases on March 6. Ubisoft recently announced that they would be pushing development on Far Cry 5,The Crew 2, and another, unannounced project back. The latter is scheduled for release in the 2019/20 financial year, so could very easily be the next Assassin’s Creed game – which might have a Viking setting.

Why just look at the food in Monster Hunter when you can make it in real life? Just look at how the real deal compares to the in-game version.

Twitter user Ki-ki’s wife created this real-life version of “Hunter food.”

It looks way better than the official version being served up at the Capcom Cafe in Saitama, Japan.

But hey, that looks pretty good, too.

Rumor: Spyro the Dragon trilogy remaster coming to PS4 in Q3 2018

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Gematsu

Rumor: Spyro the Dragon trilogy remaster coming to PS4 in Q3 2018

Announcement reportedly set for March.

Spyro the Dragon

Activision is currently working on a remaster of the Spyro the Dragon trilogy (Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon), similar to its previously released Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which will be announced in March and released in Q3 2018 for PlayStation 4, according to a Kotaku UK report.

The trilogy will reportedly be a one-year timed exclusive for PlayStation 4, before being ported to other platforms in 2019. It is reported that the same exclusivity is tied to Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which will be ported to multiple platforms in 2018.

Vicarious Visions, the same studio that developed Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, is reportedly handling the Spyro the Dragon trilogy, which is said to feature new assets, lighting, animations, and cinematics, as well as a remastered soundtrack, updates to the save feature, and some content cut from the original releases of the games.

Get a free copy of Dead Space on PC

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Polygon

Grab one of the best horror games of the past decade

Dead Space for Windows PC is currently available for free through EA’s Origin service as part of the company’s “on the house” program. The game is 100 percent off for a limited time, so make sure you grab it before the promotion expires. Once it’s in your library you can play it for as long as you have access to the service.

Dead Space was released in 2008, so you won’t need a beefy gaming PC to run it, but it remains one of the best horror games released over the past decade. You play as Isaac Clarke (get it?), an engineer on the USG Ishimura who creates improvised weapons from scavenged mining equipment to fight off waves of enemies called Necromorphs. It’s not enough to shoot them in the head; instead you often have to tear them apart piece by piece to destroy them.

It’s one of the better takes on the “haunted house in space” genre, and this is a great excuse to get your own copy without having to pay for it.

Final Fantasy 14’s Eureka Content Detailed in Square Enix Live Stream

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to IGN Video Games

Your Eureka Moment is on the way

Final Fantasy 14’s latest DLC, Rise of a New Sun, rolled out in patch 4.2 last month, and is the second major expansion following 2017’s Stormblood. Matt “Bayohne” Hilton, from Square Enix’s community team, has confirmed that The Forbidden Land – Eureka Anemos will follow in patch 4.25. The content will be similar to Diadem, which wasn’t very well received at the time, but Final Fantasy 14’s director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, has elaborated on what’s in store, and the lessons they learned from Diadem’s realease.

“We tried a few different things with the Diadem,” he said in an interview with PSU back in November, via Silicon Era. “In the first iteration we focused on content where players farmed enemies without many clear objectives, and then toyed with the idea of having players complete objectives with a big surprise waiting for them (in the form of a monster). Eureka was developed based on our experiences from creating that content.

“The idea behind Eureka is to give players the opportunity to experience content that has a completely different set of battle rules from field or instanced content.”

Director and producer, Naoki Yoshida, shared further details on Eureka in a recent live stream, with Siliconera posting a lengthy summary of the upcoming features.

Up to 144 players will be able to occupy a single instance with an emphasis on teamwork, and they can drop in and out of parties as they choose. If you’re looking for a party to buddy up with, you can put up your “invite flag”.

Player progression in Eureka will be different to progression outside of it, with elemental levels forming the core, and a level cap of 20 being implemented. Enemies encountered will also fit into the elemental system, with specific strengths and weaknesses.

While elemental EXP won’t be lost between visits, getting KO’d in Eureka will result in a penalty of lost EXP – unless players get revived within 10 minutes of going down. On the plus side, if your elemental level is five or below, you won’t get penalised.

To nab Eureka gear, you’ll need Protean Crystals – found in Eureka – as well as an item from a “Notorious Monster,” of which there are a few, and you can expect them to be as difficult to defeat as their name suggests.

The Forbidden Land, Eureka will drop in patch 4.25, but a date has yet to be confirmed.

New Street Fighter 5 DLC Character Release Date Confirmed, See Blanka In Action

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameSpot

Capcom has announced that the next DLC character for Street Fighter 5 is Blanka and he’ll be available from February 20. A new trailer for the character provides us with a showcase of the latest iteration of the beast, whose visual design looks mostly the same, other than some longer arm and leg hair.

“In SFV: AE, Blanka is living peacefully with his mother, and has adapted well to being introduced back into society,” Capcom explains on its website. “One day, a suspicious salesman approaches him and offers a way to make Blanka famous by mass producing a doll made in Blanka’s likeness. Will it work? Find out in his character story mode.”

He’s also as savage as ever in battle, biting, head butting, clawing at enemies. His Coward Crouch ability is now his V-Skill and, according to Capcom, can be used to “avoid many attacks, including fireballs.” After the Coward Crouch, Blanka can execute either Wild Lift with a punch button or Raid Jump with a kick button. The former will move Blanka forward while attacking to launch the opponent into the air. The latter, meanwhile, allows Blanka to leap into the air “where he can use any mid-air attack to advance.”

His V-Trigger I is called Jungle Dynamo and is a roll attack that does more damage can then be followed up by additional attacks, including the Critical Art. Additionally, Jungle DynamoIt “powers up his Electric Thunder and changes the animation so Blanka steps forward while unleashing the electric current.” If it hits, the enemy is popped into the air and can be hit with a Blanka ball.

His V-Trigger II is Lightning Beast, which “unlocks a special move, Rolling Cannon (Direction + HP+HK), which can be performed after using Rolling Attack, Back Step Rolling, and Vertical Rolling.” This new move can extend combos or move Blanka into more advantageous positions. Finally, his Dynamic Rolling Critical Art combines electricity with rolling for devastating results. Check him out in the video above.

Blanka is available for $6/£6 or 100,000 Fight Money. For those who have the Season 3 Character Pass he’s available at no additional cost. The pass also includes Sakura (available now), Falke, Cody, G, and Sagat, who will become available at a later date. If you purchase Blanka is purchased as part of the Season 3 Character Pass or with real money, his Battle Costume with colors 3-10 and default costume colors 3-10 are also included.

In related news, Capcom is adding Monster Hunter World costumes for Ken, R. Mika, and Ibuki into Street Fighter V’s Extra Battle Mode over the next three months. Each fighter’s new costume is based on a particular monster’s armor set in Monster Hunter.

In the past year, graphics cards have gone from the reasonably priced computer part you pick up on Amazon or Newegg to something bordering on as precious as gold. If you happen to find one being sold at its MSRP, you can easily snatch it up and sell it on Amazon for twice the price. The market has gotten so cutthroat in the face of a GPU shortage that vendors like Microcenter have limited the number of GPUs you can buy and will only sell at the original MSRP if you can prove you’re buying it for personal use. And into this fierce market enters AMD with a new CPU with an integrated graphics card so good you can leave the other GPUs to the cryptominers.

Today, AMD is launching two new APUs, or accelerated processing units, that are way cheaper than their Intel rivals but with performance that’s far better. APU, if you’re unfamiliar, is the AMD-coined term for a CPU with integrated graphics. APUs, and CPUs with integrated graphics, don’t need an additional graphics card (or GPU) in order to function, and right now that is a very big deal.

These two new APUs are very good at what they do, and they easily rival their Intel competitors, while also being faster than even some low-end graphics cards available. If you’ve been thinking about building up a new PC for casual gaming, or looking to build your first PC on the cheap, then these APUs are intended for you.

The AMD Ryzen 5 2400G retails for $170 and is roughly comparable to Intel’s $255 i5-8600K. The AMD Ryzen 3 2200G goes for a crazy cheap $100 and is roughly comparable to Intel’s $170 i3 8350K. That $70 to $85 difference is nothing new for AMD. It sells a lot fewer CPUs than Intel and has always undercut its primary competitor, but now it’s selling processors that aren’t only cheaper, but far better choices for people who have no plans to buy a separate graphics card.

The reason these new CPUs are so good at graphics is that AMD makes really good graphics cards too. That’s a key difference between it and Intel. GPUs are built into AMD’s DNA, and thus it can, the theory goes, better implement integrated graphics than Intel. Intel gets that too—it’s why it partnered with AMD on a new series of chips earlier this year, and why it poached AMD’s lead GPU architect last year.

When it comes to integrated graphics the proof is in the benchmarks—particularly the gaming ones. Simply put, the AMD Ryzen APUs have the fastest integrated graphics you can buy right now. Even when compared to the integrated graphics in Intel’s top-of-the-line desktop processor, the $360 Intel i7-8700K AMD’s budget APUs are tremendous. The Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 have the same integrated graphics chip that’s based on AMD’s Vega microarchitecture, and consequently they pull nearly identical numbers. Both were twice as fast at rendering frames in the Civilization VI benchmark we use, and both rendered five times as many frames per second in the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark.

Below you can see the benchmark numbers speak for themselves. For comparisons sake, I also threw in the results for the AMD 550 GPU. That graphics card is one of the cheapest currently available right now, with an MSRP of $80 and a street value of more than $160.

Those numbers are great, but something like Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is a AAA game with extremely taxing graphics, isn’t exactly what integrated GPUs are meant for. If you want to play the fanciest games available than you’ll need a fancy graphics card. Integrated graphics are intended for the games you want to play a quick round of after dinner—hugely popular but not taxing titles like Gwent or Hearthstone or Overwatch. Because I really wanted to see how the graphics hold up with more popular games I also opted to test the popular shooter Overwatch. As with Civ VI and Rise of the Tomb Raider it was tested at a resolution of 4K. And again it trumped the best Intel integrated GPU you can get right now, with both the Ryzen 5 and 3 being twice as fast as the Intel Iris 630 that’s integrated with the i7-8700K.

Unfortunately none of the results were actually good at 4K. Even on the lowest settings the Vega GPU in AMD’s APUs only managed an average 20 frames per second, which is absolutely unplayable. But when I dropped the resolution to 1080 things improved significantly. On the lowest graphics setting the AMD APUs managed an average 66fps—which is more than enough for most players and almost twice as fast at the 33fps of the Intel CPU. And on the Ultra it still managed a perfectly acceptable 35 frames per second versus the Intel’s unplayable 17fps. That means you could build an Overwatch ready computer with something as cheap as the $100 Ryzen 3 2200G. No need for one of the sky-high priced graphics cards out there.

That’s a big deal. Intel has been promising gaming-worthy integrated graphics for the last few years, but it’s been unable to deliver. Trying to play Overwatch on a desktop sans discrete GPU, or trying to play on a laptop, is an exercise in frustration. AMD’s new Ryzen APUs actually make gaming without a graphics card possible—and pleasant! The experience is even similar to if you had a card plugged into the PCI slot sucking up power. You still have to install AMD drivers just as you would with discrete graphics you get the same tweaks to gaming performance as you would with a discrete card.

In fact the only issue I’ve run into so far with these APUs is that they currently do not play very nicely with discrete graphics cards from AMD’s rival Nvidia. Originally I’d hoped to give a detailed look at how the Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G performed against their competitors on benchmarks like Geekbench 4, WebXPRT 2015, and Gizmodo’s Photoshop test. However all CPUs we’ve previously tested were benchmarked with an Nvidia 1080 GPU installed. When I tried to get that same CPU working with the Ryzen APUs I ran into some pretty annoying errors related to the AMD and Nvidia drivers not playing well together. AMD is still investigating the issue, and I’ll update here should the situation be resolved.

But I find myself reluctant to ding these Ryzen APUs too much for this driver issue. Because these APUs aren’t necessarily the processors someone would, or should, buy when building your next big gaming rig. Instead these super cheaps CPUs are what you buy when you’re building your first PC or slowly building up a new PC out of spare parts. You spend $100 on a CPU one month. Then $50 on the motherboard the next. Before you know it you’re building a fast enough computer for a few hundred bucks and playing Overwatch with you friends. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to build a PC but have been put off by the potential price then the $170 Ryzen 5 2400G and $100 Ryzen 3 2200G are the processors for you. These things are so good you can put off worrying about what kind of graphics card to buy until the prices drop.

README

  • These processors are cheap and between $70 and $85 cheaper than their competitors.
  • If you’re looking to game at reasonable graphics settings in 1080p than these processors are perfect and give you nearly identical performance.
  • People looking for 4K gaming should not be idiots, and still plan to invest in a discrete graphics card.
  • We found driver issues occurred when trying to use a Nvidia card with the AMD APUs, but you own mileage may vary.

Eurogamer Confirms Bandai Namco Is Officially Working on Metroid Prime 4

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Nintendo Life | Latest Updates

Metroid Prime 4 is one of the next big games coming to Nintendo Switch, but all that lack of concrete detail has led to countless rumours. At one point we learned Retro Studios (which worked on the original Metroid Prime trilogy) wouldn’t be on development duties, then there were murmurs that id Software might be stepping in to work on the title. Then it was Bandai Namco’s turn to be centre of all MP4 rumours.

Well, Eurogamer has today confirmed (via multiple sources) that Bandai Namco is indeed working on Metroid Prime 4, specifically its Bandai Namco Singapore studio. Obviously, there are very few details on the ground – and no real certainty we’ll see it before 2019 – but at least we now know which studio is bringing Samus back to the FPS party.

Let us know your thoughts on this MP4 news and whether you think the studio is the right choice for the game…

Players Are Still Doing Amazing Stuff In Dark Souls III

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Kotaku

Image via YouTube

Released just shy of two years ago, people have committed no shortage of amazing feats in Dark Souls III. Recently though, two players have hit new heights showing just how far top-tier Souls play has come.

First there was Squillakilla’s zero damage, all bosses plus DLC run he accomplished this weekend. The streamer has been doing amazing stuff in Dark Souls III ever since the game released. Almost a year ago he did a no hits run of the game including DLC. He’s also done level 1 runs that take forever but during which he snatches victory from the jaws of every boss unscathed. This recent run is a world’s first for beating everything in the game without taking any damage at all. The quintessential “no-hit” run of Dark Souls III allows for environmental damage. It can even help since being hurt can activate certain abilities, like the Red Tearstone Ring buff which lets players deal more damage when their health is below a certain threshold.

Squillakilla’s most recent run, however, required beating the game flawlessly, meaning no attacks or staggers, or environmental damage. From there he had to rely solely on skill and muscle memory to complete the challenger, with everything from glitches to skips and savequits out of the question. By the time he gets to the Curse-Rotted Greatwood he said his heart was pounding painfully hard. “My chest hurts right now. Fucking story of my life,” he said toward the end of the stream. “That’s insane, I did not go in and just expect to get this.”

The whole thing took him close to four hours to accomplish, which you can watch in its entirety below.

Then there’s Nemz38 who just a few days ago became Dark Souls III’s unequivocally best speedrunner. How did he do that? Nemz38 has held the first place world records in the game’s three main speedrunning categories for some time now. His Any% time is 35:09 while his All Bosses run sits at 1:21:12, both of which have stood for over a month now. His Any5 No TearDrop run stands at 42:09, tied by fellow speedrunner Horstz. But then there are all of the less well known miscellaneous categories, including Any% Current Patch, All Bosses, No Major Skips, Boss Rush Mod, and All Achievements. The last of those, for instance, was also set a month ago and sits at just under 13 hours.

However, he made history this weekend for finally taking first-place in the game’s only other semi-major speedrunning category at the moment: SL1 All Bosses. This category involves beating all of the game’s bosses, including DLC, without leveling up at all. He managed to do that with a time of 1:36:46, beating the previous best by almost 30 seconds. “I don’t fucking care that that could have been a lot better,” he said afterwards. “I died and I still came back and did it.”

Of course, he has eight different world records to defend now. While he might have solidified his legendary status within the community, there are plenty of other amazing players who continue to push the limits of what’s possible in Dark Souls III day-in and day-out. At this point though it shows just how far the game’s best players have come and how they continue to find new challenges to help set them apart despite how optimized the game has already become.

You can watch Nemz38’s most recent world record below.

A Modern Gaming PC Inside An Old 386 Case

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Kotaku

The outside of this PC screams 1991. The inside, however, is very much from 2018.

A self-confessed “beige-aholic”, Tylinol wanted to try something different with his latest PC build, and so did what anyone with fond memories of Wolfenstein 3D would do: put a relatively modern gaming PC inside the yellowing old case.

There’s actually a nice story behind the old PC. Tylinol writes that he got it a few years back from an old man “hauling it to the end of his driveway”.

“Someone who wants this old computer walks by just as I’m throwing it out?”, he remembers the man saying. “That’s serendipity for you!”. Tylinol kept the old 386 around, playing old DOS games on it until the 2010 Nashville floods destroyed the components.

He couldn’t part with it, however, and recently moved a bunch of parts he bought in 2015 into it, calling the new PC “Serendipity”.

The specs included an i5-6500, GTX 970, 8GB DDR4 RAM and an SSD. To give you an idea of the advances in computing power since the release of the case and the parts inside it, and as Tylinol writes in this Reddit post, the LED on the front of the case now has more processing power inside it than the original 386 PC itself.

The rust was removed with Naval Jelly and sandpaper.

The story behind the PC is a nice one, but there’s a bit more to it than just cramming the new parts in: the old case had quite a bit of damage from the floods, so there was a restoration project involved in getting it presentable as well. He also put some work into removing the old, artificial processing speed LED and replacing it with an accurate CPU temp readout.

You can see more shots from the build here.

It’s Black History Month so let’s talk about our favorite black video game characters

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

Warning you now there are spoilers below

Leslie in accounting just added a Martin Luther King Jr. quote to her email signature template which can only mean one thing: it’s Black History Month. Yes, it’s that time of year where students in elementary school will spend a solid 30 minutes learning about Rosa Parks and then enjoy a peanut butter sandwich because of George Washington Carver. At least that’s what we did at my white-ass elementary school. And if you think that’s an ignorant way to look at black history in America, you should know that at my middle school, we had a “slave run day” where members of the eighth-grade class were divided up into two groups: runaway slaves and slave catchers. On this day, the “slaves” would get 15 minutes to find a hiding spot in the school, after which the catchers would go around looking for them for 15 minutes, only able to search if they had the permission of the teacher of the classroom or office worker. The process would repeat throughout the day and at the end of school, any “slaves” not caught would be considered to have reached freedom in the North. That’s right, our lesson in the Underground Railroad was a day of hide-and-seek.

What does that have to do with black video game characters? Absolutely nothing, but it’s a little bit of ridiculousness from my past that there is no better time of sharing then right now. Because just as my school clearly got teaching black history wrong, the video game developers don’t have the best history of creating black characters. From racist-ass NES games out of Japan to the white-nonsense that was slave ship Tetris, some developers just don’t get it. But others do and that’s who we’re here to talk about today.

Just as I did with female characters for Women’s History Month and male characters for International Men’s Day, I asked my fellow Destructoid editors to sound off on their favorite black video game characters.  While I’m sure those names listed below are all fine in their own standing, I’m going to go out on a limb and say whoever they write about can’t be as good as Shinobu from No More Heroes.

Suda51’s masterstroke on the Wii resonates still with its punk aesthetics, piss-in-the-wind attitude, and a cast of certified case studies. The series is a straight-up banger. I maintain Suda51 is the single best character creator coming out of Japan with this game as yet another reason in the long list of why. Every villain in No More Heroes is a brilliantly deranged but Shinobu is so broken I think I like her more than the protagonist.

Originally an opponent of Travis Touchdown, Shinobu is out for blood believing he is responsible for her father’s death. She’s heartless, as demonstrated — spoiler alert — when she kills all the witnesses to Travis’s challenge of her. You almost feel sorry for her, a teenager living a secret life as an assassin because some jackass with a laser sword killed her father so many years ago. She’s turned off her heart and cast out her soul, leaving her an empty vessel for vengeance. Yeah, she saves Travis near the end of the game, but she’s no hero otherwise the game would have been called Still One Hero.

Shinobu could have easily fallen into the trap writers use when they want to reform a former enemy. She could have started to grow, started to feel again. She could have tried to make amends for all the innocents she’s slaughtered. But that wouldn’t be punk. Instead, she grows even more insane. After killing her way across Asia, she returns to Santa Destroy completely infatuated with Travis. She transfers her crazy dedication from her father to him, trying to wrangle Travis into a sexual master/apprentice relationship that creeps even him out. And Travis is pretty much the type of person to make PornHub his homepage.

She’s cold, she’s crazy, and I absolutely love her. This assassin’s journey isn’t done yet, and while I don’t anticipate her showing up in Travis Strikes Again if No More Heroes 3 does get made, Shinobu damn well better make an appearance.

Chris Moyse

The Resident Evil series has a glut of lead characters, either controlled by A.I or a second player. For my money, Resident Evil 5’s Sheva Alomar remains one of the coolest cast members to date. An operative of the West Africa Bioterrorism Security Assesment Alliance (or BSAA), Agent Alomar is assigned to work with Chris Redfield in the city of Kijuju, ostensibly to track down felon Ricardo Irving, although matters would get fast out of hand.

Sheva is a great character, she’s resourceful, smart and a bonafide badass. Most importantly, she doesn’t exist to merely ask the male lead to explain the plot to the audience or be kidnapped with reckless abandon. Sheva is presented as skilled in both weapons and CQC, with a dedication not only to the job but also to those who rely on her skills for survival. I also thought, back in 2009, that Alomar was a technical marvel, with expressive eyes, hair and skin textures that really raised the bar for realistic looking characters at that time. Even today, almost a decade later, her model is still impressive.

Sheva Alomar is yet to make a comeback since she roundhouse kicked her way through Resident Evil 5, which would prove one of the series more… divisive entries. More’s the pity, as she has always stuck in my mind as one of the most memorable agents in the game’s storied history of zombie-fighting heroes.

Peter Glagowski

I had a bit of a tough time coming up with a character to write about for this entry. It isn’t because there aren’t any good black characters, but mostly that I tend to not even look at race when thinking of a “good” character. When I started to apply race to them, I realized I have a huge propensity for Asian characters, which makes sense since a lot of the games I like are Japanese.

That being said, I was going to initially go with CJ from San Andreas, but I kind of realized he isn’t that great. Franklin from GTA V is also not good, but that is more the point (his story is about coming to terms with your awfulness and moving on). Then I remembered Watch Dogs 2 and how all of the characters were written more like humans instead of races.

Marcus may not be the most memorable or even charming guy, but the writers at Ubisoft created him like any other person, first, before even applying a race to him. There is one joke about being a black guy in Silicon Valley, but most of the dialog that comes from Marcus is something any person would say and not some Hollywood version of a thug.

I also like that Marcus is the only black character in a GTA-style game that doesn’t drop an N-bomb every other sentence (or ever, if my memory serves me correctly). Just because you make a black character doesn’t mean you get to start using that word.

Charlotte Cutts

I didn’t really have to think very hard about this one, having just finished Season 3 of The Walking Dead during the Christmas break. Clementine is a character you follow throughout all three seasons, as she develops from a scared and dependent little girl, abandoned in her family home after her babysitter gets munched, into a fully self-sufficient zombie slayer and a crack-shot with a pistol.

The player is with her during the hardest times in her life, such as her choice over whether to kill her de facto guardian when he succumbs to his injuries and deciding whether to abandon a frightened young girl in the group as walkers swarm into a caravan. When we catch up with Clem as a teenager in Season 3, it’s great to see how resilient she has become and you have real hope that she will survive to see a better world.

But to be honest, Season 3 Clementine also scared me a little. She would shoot people without much remorse, and was way too cold and calculating for a 13-year-old – she came across as a seriously damaged individual. But then, right on cue, Telltale swooped in and set up a story about how first love can still blossom, even during the zombie apocalypse.

By the end of Season 3, I felt like older Clem wasn’t just the hard-as-nails survivor she was made out to be in the first couple of episodes. Like the rest of the cast, she was a flawed human who had done her best to adapt to her surroundings. I would go so far as to say she is one of my favourite video game characters of all time, so of course, I was going to make damn well sure she was on this list.

Wes Tacos

Final Fantasy XIII is an absolute travesty of a game. I’ve said it before. I’ve written about it. I make no apologies in expressing how much I despise the game. That said, Sazh is legit a great character, and I’ll always be mad he got stuck in such a bad game.

In any other game, Sazh could have — and should have — been the main character. He had clear motivations for his actions, legitimate character development, some really incredible plot arcs and scenes (his suicide scene is soooooo good), and a damn fine conclusion.

I think what I like best about Sazh is his pure paternal instinct. The whole while he’s chasing down redemption for Dajh turning into a Fal’L’Ciehtth’Cie he still finds time to be a father figure (not the sexy George Michael kind) to the hapless and completely fucking irritating Vanille, helping to guide her when she gets down. For fuck’s sake, the man had a backpack full of guns and didn’t shoot her within ten minutes of being stranded with her. That speaks to his character, because man, she’d have decorated the side of a truck stop restroom if I were in his shoes.

Also, he keeps a baby chocobo in his hair. That alone means he’s better than CJ’s pick.

Occams Electric Toothbrush

This is the kind of article where you want to dig deep and reflect. Find a character and a moment that exemplifies a minority representation in video games. That’s not always all that easy to do. I won’t lie, I scratched my head a bit. In trying to find a video game character that I found was intrinsically tied to the idea of what being black meant to me. The first few names that popped up were already taken and rightly so. So I thought and my brain danced through the games and the years and it hit me: I always had a lot of respect for Dudley from Street Fighter.

Dudley is a British boxer who dresses like he’s from the 1920’s. That’s awesome, right there. Fact: everyone from that time period dresses better than we do now. Everyone. Even the folks in Dorothea Lange’s dust bowl photos are dressed better than we are. Dudley not only had style but he carried himself with a certain impeccable class. He strives to be the perfect gentleman in all things. Even in his boxing, it’s not about the glory. It’s about the art and improving oneself. Know what Dudley’s favorite thing to do is beside boxing? Garden. In his boxing gloves. The man has a beautiful sense of self that doesn’t rely on glory or personal gain. That’s the kind of man I can respect and want to emulate as I go through life.

Jonathan Holmes

I don’t know who the greatest black characters in games are,  but I do know who the latest are. They also happen to be pretty great to boot. Frigg from Mercenary Kings Reloaded and Dandara from Dandara are both strong and dynamic, and neither fall into the same traps and tropes that many black women in games have slipped into in the past.

Also, shout out to Marina, who is about to become the first black woman amiibo!

Rich Meister

Barret Wallace may not seem like the deepest character on the surface, but the gun-toting leader of AVALANCHE is actually far more complex than people give him credit for.

Barret is determined to save the planet even if that means blowing up all of Midgar in the process. Barret was more than content to live a simple country life, but Shinra took all he had. Barret’s tale of revenge is one of the most compelling character arcs in one of the best RPGs ever made. Barret would also apply for dad of the year, despite letting his adopted daughter mix drinks in Tifa’s bar.

He also has a freaking gun for an arm. Still not sure how that reload mechanic works, presumably he eats bullets. As an added bonus his look in the Final Fantasy VII remake is pretty awesome.

*****

I will admit a baby chocobo in the hair is pretty badass and, perhaps making up the fact he played second fiddle to boring old Lightning in FFXIII, Sazh is one of the first characters you meet in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia where he’s pretty much the best.

Capcom Pro Tour 2018 Commences Without Mention Of Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to http://www.GameInformer.com

Capcom has announced commencement of their Capcom Pro Tour, their multi-tournament fighting game tour, but curiously does not mention the recently-released Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite at all.

“Street Fighter fans,” Capcom’s blog post reads, “the wait is almost over. Capcom Pro Tour (CPT) 2018 is nearly upon us and we’re proud to feature Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and Season 3 this year.”

Last year, despite Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite having not been released for the beginning of the Pro Tour, plans were still made to include it, and it culminated with the Battle for the Stones event at PSX in December. This year, there is nary a mention of the game within Capcom’s public facing esports initiative, with all support having been poured into the recent update to Street Fighter V.

This year’s two premier events are Final Round in Atlanta, GA on March 16, and NorCal Regionals in Sacramento, CA on March 30. If you’re looking for Street Fighter V tournaments to watch early on, those will be the two to look out for.

[Source: Capcom]

Our Take
It had been a given until relatively recently that Marvel would show up on the Capcom Pro Tour, even if it didn’t show up anywhere else. I doubt this is a complete refocus on Street Fighter V as much as it is a vote of no confidence that the investment in pushing MvCI is going to be worth it.

Hunt: Showdown’s ‘work-in-progress’ system requirements recommend a GTX 970

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

Screen Shot 2018-02-06 at 3.22.24 PM

The greatest challenge we faced in the Hunt: Showdown alpha—aside from the bees—was maintaining a consistent framerate. All of us who played encountered stuttering, with framerates dipping heavily, especially during scuffles with players and monsters, where freezing and hitching are deadly.

Hunt is in alpha, so problems like this are expected, but improving performance is going to be crucial if Hunt is going to be any fun for most people. In an email sent to PC Gamer this morning, Crytek laid out its working plan for optimization.

“For starters, we need to get a smooth average framerate on recommended specs,” writes the Hunt team. “After that, we will look to improve the average framerate on said specs, and for the longer-term roadmap, we will be looking to optimize the game for a wide range of hardware.”

The “final system requirements will likely be different,” but for now, the team’s ‘work-in-progress’ recommended specs are:

  • Processor: Intel i5 – 3.0 GHz (6th Generation)
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
  • OS: Windows 10 64 bit

In the alpha, we encountered problems while exceeding these specs, for example with a Core i7-6700k and GTX 980. By the time we reach Hunt’s Early Access release—there’s no firm release date set yet—expect some optimization improvements to have been made, though also expect Hunt to remain demanding.

“Optimization is an ongoing effort on both the game and the technology level,” writes the Hunt team. “We will have basic settings and graphic options available at Hunt’s Early Access release, but more will be on the way. Since we are most likely CPU-bound on most configurations, we’re providing these options more for comfort than for performance.”

We’ll update this article with new recommended specs and performance information as Hunt develops. Despite our performance struggles, we enjoyed the spider hunt a good bit. Check out our impressions from the alpha for more.

Viz Media enters games publishing with an anime-inspired debut

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Polygon

Viz Media, best known for publishing comic and animated adaptations of gaming franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon, is adding actual, original video games to its roster. The company announced that it has teamed up with Portland-based indie studio Rose City Games to release its debut project, the rad-looking The World Next Door.

The focus of Viz Media’s new gaming arm will be what it calls “original, narrative-driven games,” the first of which will be developed by Rose City Games. Viz Media said that it’s also “accepting publishing inquiries from developers with games at all stages of production.”

Rose City Games’ game sounds like an appropriate project for the pair. Drawing from games like Oxenfree and Night in the Woods, The World Next Door is a magic-infused, aesthetic-driven adventure game led by a teenage girl. Viz Media also cites anime as a clear inspiration on the title, whose star, Jun, travels to a world full of fantastical creatures and befriends mysterious figures along the way.

The first piece of key art also looks suitably inspired by Viz Media’s catalogue of Japanese imports; take a look below.

Rose City Games/Viz Media

The World Next Door also appears to mark Rose City Games’ first big foray into game design. The studio has previously worked on marketing campaigns for high-profile indie projects, notably Hiveswap, last year’s greatly anticipated game based on the Homestuck franchise.

There’s no release window yet for The World Next Door, says Viz Media.

March Cover Revealed – Metro Exodus

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameInformer

After two successful games sets in the post-apocalyptic Moscow underground, the Metro series is ready for its moment in the sun. Ever since we watched the impressive debut footage at Microsoft’s last E3 press conference, we were eager to learn more about Artyom’s journey through the irradiated Russian countryside and how developer 4A Games hopes to pair the traditional, linear Metro experience with some of the open spaces and focused exploration of its progenitor – S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. This past month, we journeyed to 4A Games’ headquarters on the gorgeous Mediterranean island of Malta to find these answers and more.

The 14-page cover story that emerged from our visit is packed with new details about Metro Exodus. We sat down with creative director Andriy “Prof” Prokhorov, executive producer Jon Bloch, and others to discuss 4A Games’ move from Kiev to Malta, chronicle the tricky task of evolving Metro from linear to open play spaces, and learn just how large these sandbox spaces get (we’re talking orders of magnitude larger than anything in Last Light). 4A Games also shared many smaller details series fans won’t want to miss. The feature touches on how weapon customization is changing in Exodus, the brand-new crafting system, and much more.

You can check out our cover by clicking the image below to open the full spread.

We also have a month of exclusive online coverage for Metro Exodus from me, Ben Hanson, and Javy Gwaltney that includes video interviews, close examinations of gameplay systems, exclusive screenshots, and more. Watch our coverage trailer for a tease of what’s to come.

In addition to our 14 pages of Metro Exodus coverage, the March issue is jam-packed with interesting features. Matt Miller goes hands-on with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, plundering the swashbuckling adventure for new details in anticipation of its pending release. Andrew Reiner peers into the twisted and tantalizing minds of Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and William Pugh (The Stanley Parable) by asking them to design sequels to beloved gaming franchises like Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Resident Evil. Elise Favis takes a closer examination of how the defeat of net neutrality could affect gamers in the coming years. We also have a four-page feature on Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, a two-page break down on the expanded content coming to Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and a GI Classic examining the Metro series precursor, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Print subscribers can expect their issues to begin arriving in the next few days. Can’t wait that long? The digital edition of the issue is available later today on PC/MaciOSAndroid, and Google Play. You can also get the latest issue through third-party apps on NookKindle, and Zinio starting tomorrow. To switch your print subscription to digital, click here, or to create a new subscription to the digital edition, click here.

Click on the banner below to visit our special Metro Exodus hub. We’ll regularly be adding new stories to it in the coming days and weeks, so if you want to know everything you can about 4A Games’ latest effort be sure to bookmark it and check back in throughout the month.

Switch Now Has Three Times As Many Games as Wii U Did At This Point In Its Lifecycle

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Nintendo Life | Latest Updates

This little milestone isn’t an official figure from Nintendo or anything, but it’s still a cool little comparison to make.  The stats come from Kotaku, who sampled data from 18,000 games and 250,000 reviews taken from Metacritic and compared the number of games released by the same point in Switch, Wii U and Wii’s respective lifecycles – namely the 279th day (this would have been the end of December 2017 for Switch) and how well these games were reviewed by critics.

The final results showed Switch has more than three times the games on its platform than Wii U did by the same point, and double those on Wii. Here’s a crazy fact – by its 279th day, Switch had 191 games available. It took Wii U almost 400 more days to reach that figure, proving just how shallow its developmental pool truly was. The data also shows that Switch has far more higher rated games, and accumulated them considerably faster, too. Not bad at all, eh?

What do you guys make of these little stats and figures? You can check out the full breakdown on Kotaku…

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Releasing This Year –

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameSpot

As always, Activision will release a new entry in the Call of Duty series this year. And, although details are scant on exactly what to expect, a new report states that it will be the latest entry in the Black Ops sub-series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Following a recent tweet from games writer Marcus Sellars saying as much, Eurogamer reports that multiple sources have confirmed Black Ops 4 is indeed this year’s Call of Duty title. The game is being developed by Treyarch, which has been responsible for previous Black Ops titles. It will also reportedly have fewer sci-fi elements following the reception to 2016’s futuristic Infinite Warfare.

That we’re seeing another Black Ops game is little surprise. The Black Ops series has proven to be the most popular of the various recurring Call of Duty brands and has represented the bulk of developer Treyarch’s output over the past eight years.

The timing also makes sense; Black Ops III was released in 2015, so the inevitable fall 2018 release would come after three years. Activision shifted to a three-year development cycle for Call of Duty games, rotating between releases from Treyarch, Sledgehammer, and Infinity Ward.

New Call of Duty games traditionally aren’t announced until well into spring, so it could easily be two or more months before we hear anything official from Activision. The company reports its earnings for the final quarter of 2017 later this week; we’ll report back with anything it has to share then.

PS4 System Software 5.50 beta out today, key features revealed

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PlayStation.Blog.Europe

The beta for the PlayStation 4 systems next major system software update 5.50 (codenamed KEIJI) starts today. If you signed up and were selected for the beta program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Whether you’re taking part in the beta programme or not, we wanted to give you a first look at some of the features you can expect in this update. In 5.50, we’re introducing Play Time Management, Library plus Quick Menu updates and much more.

Play Time Management

In system software update 5.00 we introduced a range of parental control enhancements. These allowed assigned Family Managers to easily control what each individual child plays, watches and views online.

Play Time Management builds on this, giving Family Managers (and adult family members who are set as guardian), the ability to set limits on when and for how long each individual child can play for. Managing Playtime is easy; go to Settings > Family Management on your PS4, or sign in to PlayStation Network account as a family manager or guardian on your web browser from your PC or smartphone, to check and manage your child’s playtime each day.

TITLE

Notifications will be sent to children during gameplay so that they know when they should save and quit. The family managers/guardians can also set the PS4 to log out once the playtime session is over, and increase or decrease game time on the go, via the web portal.

TITLE

Import custom wallpapers via USB

By popular demand, you can now import your own images via USB stick to use as custom wallpapers on PS4. Once imported, you can even zoom, crop and preview them in-situ to help get the perfect look on your dashboard. Note that the picture files on a USB stick need to be located in a folder named “IMAGES” for the PS4 to recognize them. Just go to Settings > Themes > Select Theme > Custom > Select Image > USB Storage Device.

Following the 5.50 update, you’ll also be able to customize your Tournaments team page with your own team logo or background that you can import from a USB stick. To set your logo and background, head over to Events > Teams > select your team > Edit Team Profile.

Library UI improvements

  • ‘This PS4’ and Name/Avatar tab

TITLE

Two new tabs are being added to Library to make it easier for you to see which apps you’ve installed and purchased. The ‘This PS4’ tab lists all the applications that are installed on the PS4 system, and the tab with your name/avatar lists all the apps that you purchased with your PSN ID. This feature also makes it easy to search and find games you’ve already purchased but have not yet installed.

  • PS Plus tab

TITLE

This update also adds a new PS Plus tab to the Library, which clarifies what games you own from PS Plus’ Monthly Free Games. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.

  • Hide apps

TITLE

As requested, we’re adding a function that will allow you to hide certain applications under the ‘Purchased’ tab in the Library. In ‘Options,’ you can hide content including betas, trials or demos of games that you may not be going back to.

Quick Menu enhancements

With the launch of 5.50, you’ll be able to access custom friends’ lists directly from the Quick Menu. This will make it easier to see who’s online, and then send them messages or invitations – especially when you’re in the middle of game.

TITLE

Whenever you’re listening to music on PS4, you’ll be able to access certain shortcuts from the Quick Menu. If you’re using Spotify on PlayStation Music, the ‘square’ button will serve as the shortcut for volume control. And when you’re on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, ‘triangle’ will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the ‘square’ button as the volume control.

Notifications update

Users will be able to permanently remove old notifications from their PS4 – for better organisation and management. Just go to Notifications and press the ‘triangle’ or “OPTIONS” button to open up a menu that will allow you to select a single or multiple notifications you’d like to delete.

TITLE

Background music on PlayStation Now

With Background Music on PS Now, you’ll be able to listen to your favorite tracks while streaming a game on PS Now. Just be aware, similar to when playing a game on disc or via digital download on PS4, background music may not always be available.

Supersampling mode on PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro users taking part in the beta will see a new ‘supersampling mode’ under Settings, which enables those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games.

With supersampling mode, some games will render at a higher resolution and then be downscaled to match the HDTV – allowing PS4 Pro owners to leverage the benefits of an image clarity boost even if their PS4 Pro is not connected to a 4K TV. Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro.

TITLE

Let us know which features you’re most excited about, and remember it’s not too late to join the beta. You can still sign up here for a chance to participate.

Stay tuned for further details about more features and improvements are coming with system software update 5.50.

Far Cry 5 season pass will take you to Vietnam and Mars

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Eurogamer.net

1

Ubisoft has announced a bizarre trio of DLC packs coming as part of Far Cry 5’s season pass.

The first DLC will be set in Vietnam and pit you against the Viet Cong. The second will be a B-movie-inspired zombies pack. The last will be set on Mars, where you fight alien arachnids.

As a reminder, Far Cry 5 is set in present day Montana, USA.

And that’s not all – the season pass also includes a downloadable copy of the series’ high point to date: Far Cry 3, AKA the one with Vaas.

Ubisoft will release Far Cry 3 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this summer, but Far Cry 5 owners get the game a month early as part of the season pass.

Today also brings a new story trailer for Far Cry 5. See it below:

Far Cry 5 is now less than two months away – it arrives on 27th March. This isn’t the first time Ubisoft has decided to go all-out with its DLC, either – Far Cry 3 fans will remember the deliciously loopy sci-fi expandalone Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

League of Legends’ latest cinematic reveals the fiery backstory behind Annie

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PCGamesN

Subscribe to PCGamesN on YouTube

Riot have release a new League of Legends video, giving a new backstory to one of its oldest champions. Annie: Origins takes a look at the development of League of Legends’ favourite fire mage (sorry, Brand mains).

Annie is one of our best League of Legends champions for beginners.

The video, which you can watch above, is, as with any League of Legends cinematic, beautifully produced. It features Annie and her new step-family, as The Dark Child starts to learn the extent of her powers. Unfortunately for more or less everyone involved, Annie and her new family live in a wooden hut on the outskirts of a forest, so given Annie’s role as a powerful pyromancer, you can imagine how well that goes.

Annie: Origins is accompanied by a brand-new biography on the League of Legends universe site. It’s a significant departure from what Annie’s lore used to be, but Riot has been switching over all of its lore for several years now. As ever, the short story is also nicely done, and is accompanied on the site by a load of concept art and behind the scenes videos for the new cinematic.

Halo’s Master Chief Is Now On Nintendo Switch, Thanks To Minecraft

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameSpot

In a crossover that might have seemed incredibly unlikely in the past, Xbox’s most well-known character, Master Chief, can now appear on your Nintendo system’s screen. Thanks to the arrival of a new DLC pack for the Switch and Wii U versions of Minecraft, skins from Xbox-exclusive game series like Halo, Gears of War, and Fable are now available.

Minecraft developer Mojang, which is owned by Microsoft, announced last year that it was “still working on” bringing custom skins to the console versions of Minecraft. It’s now made good on that promise, announcing that Skin Pack 1 and a new DLC skin pack themed around Moana release today for both the Switch and Wii U versions, as well as those available on Xbox One, Windows 10, and mobile. Notably, the PlayStation versions are absent from that list.

Skin Pack 1, which is priced at $2 on Xbox 360, consists of skins based on Halo (including Master Chief and the grunt), various Fable characters (such as Jack of Blades), Banjo, ‘Splosion Man, and Gears of War’s Cole Train. You can see these and the Moana skins in the gallery below.

This is obviously most notable for the presence of Xbox-exclusive IP on Nintendo’s systems, but it could also pave the way for the Better Together update to make its way to Switch. As it stands, the new cross-platform multiplayer support introduced to Minecraft last year is not yet available on Switch. The same is also true of PS4, PS3, and Vita, though Microsoft is still interested in making Xbox One/PS4 cross-play happen.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle will feature a simplified control system option

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

At the recent EVO Japan event, Arc System Works had a playable build of their upcoming fight-fest BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, with reports coming in that the game features a simplified control scheme option, tweaked from its namesake title.

As reported by Siliconera, the team-based fighter is being designed with a wider audience in mind, due to the inclusion of brands such as RWBY. As such, the game will feature “Smart Combos” for ground and air, which can be performed by mashing a single button. This mode will also remove certain D-pad commands, with Dragon Punch maneuvers being performed by simply hitting Square and Cross together. Ground Dashes will be performed by holding forward, though air dashes will still require a double-tap.

This isn’t the first time super combos and similarly cool looking attacks have been stripped down, both King of Fighters XIV and the recently-released Dragon Ball FighterZ include these features, designed around allowing new players to do cool shit with a minimum of fuss. In fact, BlazBlue itself has a “Stylish” mode, which reconfigures the controls, mapping special attacks onto an “SP” button.

Whenever “Easy Mode” mechanics show up in fighting titles there is always some grumbling, both from hardcore fighting game fans who work hard at their execution and see skillfully-performed combos as their reward, while some beginners complain that such a mentality is “elitist”– a baffling accusation which suggests the time a player pours into a game shouldn’t reflect how good their abilities might become.

I don’t really see the problem in having a simplified option. In my experience, the better player wins out regardless of whether they are using standard inputs or not. The controls might be different for both players, but the fight is generally won in the head, and not always in the hands. An experienced player with standard inputs is at no real disadvantage to a newer player with simplified inputs.

On the other hand, the inclusion of an easier option opens a game up to fans who may not be quite so dedicated to the genre. It also gives beginners a chance to develop an instinct for the flow of a fight, which may lead to them progressing from just mashing an auto-combo ad-infinitum to developing techniques of their own. Simplified controls open a door for new players, whilst not really allowing them an unfair advantage over experienced ones.

Whichever side of the debate you take, it looks like BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is one of at least three fighters launching this year with easier control mechanics, alongside Dragon Ball FighterZ and SNK Heroines: Tag-Team Frenzy. It seems that in developer efforts to revitalise the fighting game genre on a larger scale, mashing Square is as good an idea as they have got.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle launches June 5 on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Insurgency: Sandstorm trailer shows off door breaching, vehicle combat and lots of explosions

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

Insurgency: Sandstorm developer New World Interactive has just given us a first peek at the tactical options available in the objective-based multiplayer shooter, many of which never made it into 2014’s Insurgency, of which this is a direct follow-up. The new trailer, above, shows door breaching, close-quarters pistol finishers, and combatants shooting from moving vehicles.

It’s hard to tell whether the footage is actual gameplay or just for illustration, but it looks impressive all the same. The sound is especially great, with bullets thwacking into walls and explosive charges going off with a meaty boom. A forum post accompanying the video says that each weapon has “unique ballistic calculations that take into account things like bullet drop and penetration power” and that you can “choose to drop magazines for faster reloads in dangerous situations”, which is a nice touch.

The tone of the trailer is a little confusing, with some of the characters seemingly shocked by the horrors of war. There’s a lot to be said for incorporating that into more shooters, but getting that across in a competitive multiplayer game will be difficult. It’s the kind of thing that would’ve worked perfectly in the campaign that was initially announced for the game but that was later postponed, and we don’t know when it will be coming back.

However, the game is shipping with three co-op modes where you can team up with friends against the AI, so that might be an opportunity for some thematic touches. Insurgency: Sandstorm is due to release at some point later this year, and a closed alpha is coming soon.

Zelda Glitch Hunters Discover a GameCube Emulator That Could Run on the Switch

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to USgamer.net

Last year, it was announced that select Nintendo Wii games will be available in China for the first time in HD. The only difference is that rather than a Nintendo console, they would be released through a Chinese version of the Nvidia Shield, which shares some tech with the Nintendo Switch. After a little examination from a group of Zelda glitch hunters, it was discovered that the Shield is actually running a GameCube emulator, an emulator that could theoretically run on the Switch, paving the way for a possible GameCube Virtual Console

Link and Midna from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

The findings were posted on ResetEra by forum member “dragonbane” who revealed that the glitch hunting community on the site managed to import a $250 Nvidia Shield from China with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess installed. Another member of the group, “Pheenoh,” actually streamed the game on Twitch

The group found some interesting details while watching the stream. For example, the build was incredibly stable, not crashing and maintaining a locked 30 fps throughout the game. The loading times were also incredibly fast, similar to a fast load enabled Dolphin Emulator

Dragonbane also noted that two consistent game crashes common in the original GameCube version of Twilight Princess were non-existent on the Shield version. Two glitches that interestingly enough also didn’t affect the Dolphin Emulator version of the game either until very recently.

Thanks to these clues, the hunter group decided to dump the APK from the Shield. Instead of finding a native executable for the game that matched the GameCube counterpart, dragonbane instead found a GameCube emulator. One they say “runs one of the most demanding games on the [GameCube] very smoothly on the same hardware as the Switch.”

They also suggest that there’s no way Nintendo made an emulator just to sell two Nintendo games in China.

Twilight Princess in HD.

Obviously this offers up an interesting possibility. Since the Shield shares technology with the Switch, it’s possible this GameCube emulator could work for Nintendo’s latest console, paving the way for a possible GameCube Virtual Console.

However, this is by no means an official confirmation and we don’t know who developed the emulator itself. When the Shield was announced for China, Nintendo issued a statement to Bloomberg that seemed to imply that Nvidia was responsible for the high-resolution ports.

As the Switch enters its second year, we expect more details regarding Nintendo’s planned online and digital offerings for the console. A Virtual Console has been a mainstay in Nintendo’s digital library for the past several consoles, so we’ll have to wait and see if there are any news in that department, especially in regards to GameCube games coming to the Switch.

Square Enix Montreal cancels game led by Hyper Light Drifter’s Teddy Dief

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

He’s leaving the studio and returning to indie dev

Following his work on Hyper Light Drifter, Teddy Dief left Heart Machine in May 2016 to take on a creative director role at Square Enix Montreal, the studio known for Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go, and Deus Ex Go. For almost two years now, he’s been making an unannounced game with a team that includes Fez programmer Renaud Bédard. What’s it about? Well, we’ll just have to continue wondering.

Writing on his blog, Dief has revealed his decision to leave the creative director “dream role” at Square Enix Montreal and return to “full-time indie development” back in Los Angeles.

“My team were working on a game that I deeply wish we could have shared with you,” he said. “But the business strategy of the studio shifted, and our project was sadly no longer compatible. Thankfully, the talented team remain employed and valued, assigned to other projects. Because of this shift and the loss of our project, I no longer feel this is the place for me to pursue the type of work I aspire to make – the avenues of storytelling in game design I’ve been trying to explore in my career.”

“We’re certainly not the first team to lose a project,” he added. “I’m a thousand times more privileged than most, and grateful for every beat of this games life. I’m eager to move forward.”

Just knowing who was contributing to the game, I’m bummed it won’t see the light of day. That said, this change of plans could have turned out worse, and I am eager to see what Dief will get up to next.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero backers will receive a free Steam copy of Ultimate Edition

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

Thank you gifts are Ret-2-Go

A tweet posted by Shantae co-creator Matt Bozon announced that backers of cutesy-platformer Shantae: Half-Genie Hero are to receive a free Steam code for the upcoming GOTY-style Ultimate Edition.

Following the tweet through to the game’s Kickstarter page, developers WayForward confirm that the codes will be sent out to all backers as a thank-you for the support the game received throughout its development, with the colourful sequel ultimately launching in September of 2016.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Ultimate Edition will include the original game along with expansion adventures Pirate Queen’s Quest and Friends to the End. Also included are the games Hard Core Mode and a selection of the alternate colour palettes and character costumes, which were previously backer-exclusives.

My love of the Shantae series is no secret, and its very cool to see WayForward thank the fanbase with a free copy of the game. Sure, many backers will already have all the content that is available in the Ultimate Edition, but this will provide console players with access to the game on another format, or the code can be gifted to a good buddy. Either way, it’s a nice gesture.

This PUBG bullet-drop simulator lets you train your sniper skills

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PCGamesN

This PUBG bullet-drop simulator lets you train your sniper skills

PUBG Bullet Drop Simulator

If you play PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds anything like I do, you’ll know that snipers are important, but probably not how to actually use them. To help you out, a Chinese player has developed a simulator to help you calculate PUBG bullet drop.

If you need more help, check out our PUBG guide.

The simple program appears to use in-game assets, and gives players control of a Kar98K sniper rifle. You’ll be placed in one of a random selection of positions on one of PUBG’s maps, with another player somewhere in your eye-line. Right-clicking on the screen brings up either a 4x or 8x scope, and you have to try to hit the stationary player, accounting for the rate at which bullets drop when fired over long distances.

Only one gun is currently available, and the 2x and rare 15x scopes are also missing. Distance between the two characters seems to be randomised, but you can edit some aspects of terrain, allowing you to choose between open plains, and being on a hill either above or below your opponent. Once you’ve taken your shot, the game will tell you whether you’ve missed, hit the other player’s body, or scored a headshot, as well as how far away your target is.

The simulation is currently all in Chinese, but google will automatically offer to translate the simulation (which is entirely in-browser), making the whole process a lot easier to understand. While testing it out I did find some long load times, but everything seems to be running smoothly now. This isn’t the first time someone has made something like this – Battle Royale Trainer is a paid game on Steam that lets you practice PUBG without the inconvenience of other players.

Puzzle Shooter Cold Iron Launches Today for PlayStation VR

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PlayStation.Blog

Will you destroy it before it destroys you? That’s the central question of Cold Iron, a journey through the Weird West starring a tragic gunslinger and a demon-infested revolver. It’s an odyssey that takes you through the past, present, and future as you duel against a diverse cast of bosses. More than anything, it’s a puzzle shooter. That means raw speed won’t be enough: your eyes, ears, and mind will be put to the test!

Cold Iron for PS VRCold Iron for PS VR

The odds are against you, but you’ve got a secret weapon: Cold Iron. If that’s not enough, here are six tips that will turn any greenhorn into a real gunslinger.

The devil’s in the details

Keep an eye out for each enemy’s unique mechanics. A seasoned gamer may be able to overwhelm the first duelist or two with expert speed and accuracy, but you’ll soon find that no two challenges are alike. Be on the lookout for unusual colors, sounds, and patterns, and you’ll arm yourself with everything you need to overcome even the trickiest opponents.

Shoot from the hip

Your father was the fastest gun in the West. Make him proud by shooting like a real cowboy. Instead of staring down the sights, try shooting from the hip. With this technique, you’ll make a quick motion with your wrist and fire before your opponent can unholster. It takes practice, but the reward is worth it!

Don’t be intimidated

Playing Cold Iron is like defusing a bomb with a gun. A puzzle that might seem simple on paper becomes much more challenging when you have less than a second to solve it before you’re obliterated by a massive robot. That tension is the magic of Cold Iron, and it’s exactly what we mean when we say it challenges your mind, body, and soul.

Understand the X’s and O’s

All this talk of speed and puzzles might make Cold Iron sound like a game where aim is irrelevant and spray-and-pray goes unpunished. It’s not! Whenever you lose a round as a result of missing, watch for the white X’s that appear on screen. They show where you missed so you can correct your aim. Missing low every time? You’re probably firing too early.

On the other hand, the perfect shot will make a green circle appear on the results screen. Usually a headshot will do the trick, but you’ll have to be more creative with inhuman enemies. Bullseyes are worth tons of extra points, so practice perfect aiming if you’re trying to collect every golden statue and unlock… well, you’ll see!

Take a break!

Cold Iron is designed from the ground up to be playable for everyone: the controls are simple, the difficulty curve is smooth, and the visuals are tuned for maximum comfort in virtual reality… but the enemies and challenges you’ll face are anything but simple. It’s easy to doubt your abilities after a few losses, but instead of banging your head against a (virtual) wall, take a break and try again later. You’ll find that just a few minutes will help your mind and muscles relax.

Cold Iron for PS VRCold Iron for PS VR

I know what you’re thinking. “Did he give six tips or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I lost track myself. But being this is Cold Iron, the first virtual reality puzzle shooter, you’ll need a lot of luck or a lot of skill. So ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?

Panzer Dragoon Saga Creator’s Ideas for a Remake: More Player Choice and a Souls-Like Online Component

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to USgamer.net

Screen Shot 2018-01-30 at 3.25.19 PM.png

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Panzer Dragoon Saga, one of the best JRPGs you won’t be able to find anymore. To celebrate, The Ringer caught up with series creator Yukio Futatsugi to talk about the game decades after it first came and went like a shooting star. Futatsugi even divulged what a remake of the game could look like, though actual chances of a remake are close to zero.

Panzer Dragoon Saga didn’t generate a lot of confidence for sales outside of Japan. As a result, very little quantities of copies were ordered for the North American and European region. It’s why secondhand copies of the game go on sale for as high as a $1,000. To make matters worse, Sega says that the company lost the original source code for the game, making a remaster almost impossible without rebuilding the game from scratch. So redos and remakes are not something you should expect to see announced anytime soon.

That said, Futatsugi did share his ideas of what he would change if given the opportunity to remake Panzer Dragoon Saga to The Ringer. “Make it open-world and as much as possible allow the player to make their own choices,” said Futatsugi. “Make a strong correlation between the characters’ responses and behaviors and the player’s actions, so that the characters change depending on the player’s choices.”

Lastly, Futatsugi revealed that if given the opportunity he would have added an online component that sounds not that much different from the online system used in From Software’s Souls series of games. “I think there would be online communication. I have an image of each player’s game content like a different parallel world.”

Oh, and he says he’d love a chance to make Panzer Dragoon in VR.

Futatsugi’s desired features for a possible remake all sound very much in-line with how he originally envisioned the game. As the full story recounts, Panzer Dragoon Saga was unique in how it eschewed typical JRPG story tropes. There was no black and white morality in Saga, rather a gray world of moral ambiguity and if given the chance Futatsugi sounds like he’d like to further explore this through direct actions from the player.

Panzer Dragoon Saga, despite its beloved cult status, faced a series of uphill battles including a transitioning console market, Sega’s diminishing role in the hardware space, and high sales expectations that included targets to outsell Final Fantasy VII. A goal Saga fell well short of.

Here’s What’s In Today’s (Relatively) Big ‘Destiny 2’ Update

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Forbes – Games

Destiny 2

Today, Destiny 2 continues its slow march toward regaining the interest of players with a relatively big update focused on a few aspects of the game in particular.

If you’re someone who really likes raiding in Destiny well, I have some good news, this update is almost entirely for you. But otherwise, I’m not sure if this will be enough to lure the majority of the playerbase back. We’ll have to see. It’s a process, after all.

So, what’s going on?

Destiny 2

Masterwork Armor

If you like Masterwork weapons, you may be into their new, less-attractive brother, Masterwork armor.

  • The main perk of Masterwork armor is that each piece gives you 3% damage reduction during your super, for a total of 15% reduction for a full set
  • For a single Masterwork core, you can re-roll the stat package on your armor (Recovery, Mobility, Resilience) for something else

And that’s it. Right now, Masterwork armor is admittedly pretty dull, as the super damage reduction only seems like it will really matter in PvP, and even then, probably won’t be a huge deal. However, I still think it’s probably a good idea to start building out a Masterwork set, because Bungie says they’re going to keep working on it and it’s entirely possible your boring Masterworks might turn into something worthwhile down the road once more bonuses are added.

Destiny 2

Raids Rewards

There’s a lotttt going on here.

  • Raid armor now drops with perks that help during the raid itself, a new mod system allows you to swap in and out bonuses (mods are not consumed and can be changed with Calus tokens)
  • Prestige raid now gives you double drops like it used to
  • Encounters will now always drop a raid piece, and any encounter can drop anything from any part of the raid
  • Raid vendor now sells a rotating stock of raid gear to help complete your set
  • There’s a new exotic Ghost Shell that can drop in the raid that gives you a chance to get Bright Engrams and non-dupe exotics from raid encounters

Again, a lot of this is the old “this should have been how it was at the start” problem, but it’s hard to argue these changes are anything but good, no matter what previous mistakes may have been. The Ghost Shell is going to be the new, most sought-after item as it’s the only truly new thing being added (besides mods), so I think raiders are going to have a lot of fun with this update. Everyone else…may not be quite as excited.

Destiny 2

Random Stuff

  • Prometheus Lens is getting some kind of buff after being nerfed into non-existence a few weeks ago
  • Heroic Strikes will now drop exotics more often
  • Notifications that your Postmaster is full
  • Mercury challenges show up during Infinite Forrest adventures
  • It takes longer to dismantle Masterwork Cores

All good changes, though I’m most curious to try out the new Prometheus Lens to see if it’s actually worth using now. It was a lot of fun before, even if it totally ruined PvP (and by ruined I mean made it 10x more fun, actually).

Again, this is a very raid-heavy update so if that’s your bag, you should be excited. If not, well, I’m not sure how much there is to draw you back. Masterwork armor is probably not the most exciting of goals right now, so you may want to keep waiting until future updates or DLC to return. That’s probably what I’m going to do. After all, these monsters aren’t going to hunt themselves.

This update should be live this afternoon as Destiny

2 has just gone down for maintenance as we speak.

Follow them on Twitter and on Facebook. Pick up my sci-fi novel series, The Earthborn Trilogy, which is now in print, online and on audiobook.

Sea of Thieves is making me seasick

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Polygon

Why this beta is rough for some players

My time in virtual reality has taught me not to fight through feelings of nausea when playing a game. If you feel a little sick now, you’re either going to soon feel a lot sicker or you’re going to have to take a break. It can take hours to feel OK again once you tip over into full simulation sickness, so it’s wise to back off if you begin to feel sick.

Sea of Thieves isn’t a VR game, but it sure is making me feel sick.

How is that possible?

It’s a good question, and I was surprised to find that seasickness itself isn’t very well understood, much less why I’d experience it while playing a video game.

We know that first-person games can make some people feel ill in general, and we know that some people are sensitive to getting sick on actual boats. Virtual reality enthusiasts and developers also know that keeping a steady, high frame rate is very important for comfort. If you move your head and the virtual world doesn’t immediately catch up, even if it’s only lagging behind by a few frames, you can begin to feel very ill, very quickly.

Sea of Thieves is a challenging game if you sometimes get sick while playing first-person titles. When I played the game’s current closed beta, its performance wasn’t great, even through I’m running a GTX 970 in my gaming system.

There were moments where I focused on a stable object, especially when below deck. Other times, I was looking off into the horizon and seeing a few islands lost in a sea of roiling waves. Some parts of the game also involved watching a fixed object on the ship against a background of a constantly moving sea.

And I had to move from each of these situations rapidly once I got into battle or began to work with my crew to perform even the simplest acts of sailing. There’s no reticle in the middle of the screen, either, which means that there’s never a constant, fixed point to focus on.

Sea of Thieves doesn’t offer a third-person camera. The first-person perspective does this odd shifting effect while running, and I often found myself rushing from one area of the ship to another. I doubt I can blame any one of these factors for my gorge rising, as it’s likely they all work together to make the game a deeply uncomfortable experience.

An informal poll around the Polygon offices found that I wasn’t the only person who felt sick while playing Sea of Thieves. Our own Jeff Ramos, who is nervous on the open ocean in general, lost his cool completely while playing. I almost put him down to salvage the mission, but he managed to convince me that he could stay calm until I found a safe port. The vastness of the sea, combined with the movement from the waves, created a toxic brew of hardcore nope.

This isn’t to say that the game is broken or that everyone will feel this way. Plenty of players aren’t bothered by the effects of this virtual seasickness, and Sea of Thieves itself is almost ridiculously beautiful once you get out on the ocean. I wanted to see more of the world, because the game really does beautifully simulate sailing a boat with a few friends, but I didn’t want to keep playing until I became really ill in a physical way.

You may have issues, and you may not, but it could also be impossible to know until you try Sea of Thieves for yourself. There are a few changes that the team at Rare could make to help things be a bit more comfortable for people like me, including better optimization, a reticle in the middle of the screen and perhaps a third-person view. Let’s hope at least some of those options are added during, or even after, the closed beta is over.

Square Enix speak about possibilities for Secret of Mana on Switch

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

The usual story

Since the Secret of Mana remake was first announced last year, many fans have been asking whether the new version of the 1993 SNES classic would see a Switch port, given the game’s retro stylings and Nintendo origin.

Secret of Mana Producer Masaru Oyamada addressed the fan-request in a recent interview with US Gamer. Oyamada gave the often-heard story that when development began on the title, no-one even knew Nintendo Switch was a thing.

“To kind of give background in terms of when the project started… the Switch hadn’t been announced,” said Oyamada. “Once we had announced this title, we were very surprised to see the amount of demand and feedback we received for a potential Switch version.”

Oyamada would go on to state that Square Enix are definitely looking into the possibilities of a Switch release for the title down the line. In the same interview, Oyamada also touched upon fan callings for the localisation of Seiken Densetsu Collection, once again stating that the company was listening to the demand and looking into the possibilities.

Secret of Mana launches February 15 on PC, PS4 and PS Vita.

Epic Games is “Interested” in Bringing Fortnite to the Nintendo Switch

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to USgamer.net

We all carry around an internal list of games we want to see on the Nintendo Switch, right? How many of you have “Fortnite” on your list? If you’re one of them, good news: Your wish may come true sooner or later.

Fortnite, a co-op survival game, is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac. Yesterday, “ahyperteddybear” asked Epic Games’ creative director, Donald Mustard, if there’s any chance the game will come to Switch as well. Mustard said he’s “interested” in seeing that happen, and “Hopefully we do that at some point.”

Fortnite on the Switch would be nice, but I’m personally a bit more interested in its battle royale spin-off. Death, delivered fresh from a little console that makes cute snapping noises when you slide in its controller units. What a beautiful thought.

Q.U.B.E. 2 is shaping up to be a great sequel

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

No gods, no spheres, only cubes

The original Q.U.B.E.‘s narrative can be summed up as basically being stranded on board an alien ship with a crash course set for Earth. It was up to as the player to stop it, by solving the various puzzle challenges of the “Q.U.B.E.” The game itself began as a student project back in 2009, developed from the ground up and released in late 2011.

This original build of the game was just simply a puzzler without much narrative at all. However, during that time, the core development team of students would go on to form their own studio, now known as Toxic Games. In 2014, Toxic Games would follow up with Q.U.B.E: Director’s Cut, which was essentially the same game, just now with voice acting and an actual plot (briefly summarized above).

The game itself was an interesting experience, however it did feel distinctly low-budget. This isn’t something I can say about Q.U.B.E. 2. During my short time with a preview build of the sequel, I think it’s safe to say, in every aspect — from production values, to voice acting, to artistic design and mechanics — Q.U.B.E. 2 is a massive leap forward from its predecessor.

Q.U.B.E. 2 places the player in the shoes of Amelia Cross, an archaeologist seemingly stranded on what appears to be an alien planet. Soon after collapsing during a storm, you awake inside a strange cube-patterned structure to the voice of Commander Emma Cutcliffe (over some sort of communication system), asking if any other survivors are around after what she calls “mission success.”

Right away there is a sense of distrust between her and Ameila, as she informs Ameila she’s suffering from “cryogenic-induced amnesia” and seems to know little of her, with Ameila even accusing Emma of attempting to interrogate her. From there, you’ll continue down into the realm of puzzle solving and cube powers that awaits.

Much like that of Valve’s own Portal series (which the Q.U.B.E. games take obvious inspiration from), Q.U.B.E. 2 starts off slow and simple enough, teaching you the mechanics of how each of the cubes you’ll encounter works, by having various puzzles with pre-placed cubes in specific areas (just like the pre-placed portals you’ll encounter early on in the Portal games).

During my time with the preview build, it showcased three different types of cubes, with three different types of abilities. The blue cubes allow you to jump into the air and act like bounce pads, the orange cubes extend out and create a platform, while the green cubes act as dispensers and plop out cubes that you can use to jump on or potentially place in specific areas for puzzle solving.

Each of these cube mechanics are simple enough, but, once you stumble on machines that you’ll investigate by shoving your hand inside (like any good archaeologist should), you’ll gain the ability to place each of these types of cubes on designated white panels in the environment you’ll find in later puzzle areas.

The complexity and brilliance in these puzzle mechanics comes from how you’ll then utilize all these cube abilities when puzzle solving. The puzzle areas themselves also have a number of different environmental objects such as fans, various types of switches to activate, timed sequences, and plenty more judging by the recent gameplay trailer.

As for the overall presentation and story so far, the voice acting between Amelia and Emma is convincing enough. As good as it is though, I’ve seen the trope of the sketchy unknown person on the other end of a communication system guiding you along one too many times (including from the previous game) for me to be completely invested.

But there is a certain extraterrestrial element that still has me very curious, as well as a certain statue sequence, early on, that has me interested to see where they may go with it. It’s also a fine example of one thing Toxic Games has completely nailed — the environment and atmosphere of Q.U.B.E. 2.

The overall art direction is a huge step forward from the original; it’s so good that the voice acting could be non-existent again and I’d keep playing just to see each new area. That’s no knock on the sound design either, because the soundtrack in what I’ve listened to so far just adds to the lonely feeling of its atmosphere, chiming in at those perfect moments.

The original game may have been Toxic Games’ debut title, but I think what they’re doing with Q.U.B.E. 2 has the potential to be something special and a standout title within the puzzle genre. For now though, we’ll just have to wait and see how the full game shapes up (pun intended).

Q.U.B.E. 2 will be releasing later this year on Steam for PC and Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with no official release date as of yet.

[This piece is based on a preview build of the game provided by the publisher.]

Getaway Driver Simulator ‘Pako 2’ Coming to iOS Next Week

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to TouchArcade

I know I’ve mentioned this before but one of my all-time favorite mobile games is Pako – Car Chase Simulator [$1.99 / Free] from developer Tree Men Games. The basic idea in Pako is that you’d control one of a variety of cars as you try to outrun the police for as long as possible. The pedal is stuck to the metal so your only responsibility is to steer left or right and to try and avoid running into objects or the police. The longer you’d last the more aggressive the police would become until you’d inevitably succumb, and the time that you managed to survive would act as your score. Pako featured simple mechanics but extremely fun driving physics, and its great variety of different levels to play and unique vehicles to drive is a big reason why it’s remained on my iPhone for going on four years now.

So, when I started seeing that Tree Men were developing a sequel, but that it was destined for desktop, it felt like a punch to the ol’ gut. One of my favorite games getting a sequel with all sorts of new features, and it’s not coming to my favorite mobile platform??? Well, as we learned just last month Tree Men DID plan on bringing Pako 2 to mobile following its release on Steam last November, and today we’ve learned that the mobile release is scheduled for next week! I know you can’t see me but I’m totally doing The Dance of Joy right now.

So obviously if you’re familiar with the original Pako you can see what a big departure this sequel is. It’s a much less passive game as you’ll actively be picking up your crew members and escorting them to safety and you even have the ability to fight back against the police by shooting at them. The visuals in Pako 2 also get a huge upgrade in terms of lighting and effects compared to the minimalist, lower-poly look of the original. While I love the original for its simplicity (and I’d LOVE if it were updated for the iPhone X, hint hint Tree Men) I’m really looking forward to this more action-packed take on the Pako formula. The game has gotten great reviews on desktop, and I don’t see why that won’t translate just fine over to the mobile version, so look for Pako 2 when it releases as a full paid no IAP game on iOS next week.

Epic is closing Paragon in April and offering refunds (Goodbye Paragon)

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

It lasted longer than I thought it would

Citing the lack of a “clear path […] to grow Paragon into a MOBA that retains enough players to be sustainable,” Epic has decided to sunset the game. The servers are shutting down on April 26, 2018 and as players leave leading up to that date, “matchmaking times and quality will further degrade.”

It’s not terribly surprising to hear the game is winding down, but this part of the plan is: “Epic is offering a full refund to every Paragon player for every purchase on any platform.” The company will issue refunds itself (as opposed to your platform provider) and you can request one here.

I always had the impression that Paragon was doing well enough, but I suppose the stakes are just too high to keep something like this not only running but actively growing. (Also, Fortnite Battle Royale.)

“We truly appreciate everything you’ve put into Paragon,” said Epic. “We received many passionate ideas for where to take the game; the outpouring of thoughtful suggestions is another testament to this incredible community.”

Newcomer Shadow offers GTX 1080 gaming power via the cloud

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Eurogamer.net

Screen Shot 2018-01-26 at 5.48.22 PM.png

Is this the answer to the current graphics card shortage and the sky-high cost of RAM? Or perhaps a genuine alternative to the way we own and upgrade our gaming PC hardware? Today, after a successful rollout in its home territory, French company Blade revealed that its Shadow cloud gaming system is coming to the UK, offering what it says is the equivalent of a £1,500 PC at prices starting at £27 per month for unlimited usage.

If you’re a long-term Digital Foundry reader, perhaps you caught the phrase ‘cloud gaming system’ and conjured up images of laggy gaming and poor image quality. After all, historically, we didn’t care much for concept trailblazer OnLive, rubbished the claims made by its founders, but still appreciated the ambition and recognised scenarios where it did have something to offer. Subsequent systems based on the same concept – like Nvidia’s GeForce Now – were received a little more warmly as performance improved, but based on the demo we saw, Shadow could potentially move things on to the next level.

First up, this isn’t a new gaming platform being sold to you – you’re essentially hiring a PC in the cloud. Log in to Shadow and you get the standard Windows 10 PC desktop to do with as you will. From our perspective, that means installing Steam, Origin, uPlay and GOG in turn and downloading our games, but the truth is you can install any app you want on Shadow and interact with the system just as you would with a standard PC. And the specs of this cloud hardware? You get eight threads from a Xeon server equivalent to performance from a Core i7 processor, 12GB of memory, 256GB of solid-state storage and GPU power on par with GTX 1080 (indeed, the demo we saw IDed GTX 1080 in the device manager).

You can log in to Shadow via Windows, OSX, or Android, and can seamlessly swap between devices at will. Blade has also created its own small form-factor ‘Shadow Box’ based on an AMD APU and as long as your internet connection can handle the bit-rates required, the system can stream 1080p at 144fps or 4K at 60fps. 500 Shadow Box units will be given away to the first subscribers and after those have gone, the box can be hired per month at £7.95 or bought outright for £109.95. The service itself costs £26.95 per month for a year contract, £32.95 per month for a three month contract and £39.99 per month with no contract. There are no time-limits on usage or the kind of per-hour charges we’ve seen elsewhere on other cloud systems.

A look at Blade's Shadow Box - a small form-factor unit built around an AMD APU, designed for streaming 1080p up to 144Hz and 4K at 60fps. The Shadow service itself doesn't require bespoke hardware as such: we've seen it running on phones, tablets and smart TVs.

The Shadow website talks about zero latency, which is – of course – impossible. Latency in a cloud gaming system is essentially defined by the time taken for your inputs to be sent across to the server, for the game logic to parse them, and then for the output frame to be generated, encoded, transmitted back to the user and then decoded and presented on-screen. Blade acknowledges this and during our session even pulled out its own camera-based latency measurement tool – dubbed ‘Betty’ – that is pressed onto the screen. A USB button beams over input, and a bespoke tool installed on the cloud PC changes the colour of window on-screen from black to white and back again once input is received. The time taken from the button press to the colour changing is a more than acceptable method of measuring lag, reminiscent of similar systems used to measure display latency on flat panel screens.

On an entry-level 1080p 60Hz AOC screen with Shadow working over an internet shared with scores of staff in hired offices in Shoreditch, complete end-to-end latency (including the display lag and programming logic in the app) came in at 106ms using the Betty device. By my reckoning, a good proportion of that lag will be down to the display and the app code, but it’s still a strong result overall – one that I look forward to re-testing on my own connection and displays when review hardware arrives.

The real test here will be to use the Betty device on both a local system and then Shadow, connected to the same display, and to compare the difference in the respective latency measurements. Image quality is the next concern common to cloud gaming systems and while Shadow could only be tested at its lower quality levels owing to the limited networking in place at the media briefing, it still looked good – but it’s the 4K60 and higher-end 1080p streaming options I’m looking forward to checking out.

Assessing these kinds of gaming systems ‘on the spot’ is never ideal, but I came out of my briefing with the Blade staff optimistic about the performance and impressed by the staff. Even in a less than ideal networking environment, the system was more than playable – in fact, even mouse-pointer tests (a good way to test latency) worked really well. After dealing with cloud gaming systems where the providers weren’t happy to share latency metrics or talk in-depth about their technology, the transparency of the Blade staff was a breath of fresh air.

In particular, the way that CEO Emmanuel Freund was fully in command of the technical detail and actually delighted in the challenge of addressing every question I put to him gives me real reason for optimism. Blade believes it’s made the required breakthroughs to make a cloud system work, and while the jury’s still out for us until we can go hands-on and conduct our own cloud vs local comparisons, Freund says that its system has been tested successfully in double-blind ‘taste’ tests with pro players on key titles such as Overwatch, CS:GO and Street Fighter.

If the bar is indeed set this high, the system should be more than good enough for the vast majority of players and bearing in mind the high-end components included in the Blade servers (with the company telling me that next-gen Nvidia GPUs will be fitted in time), the pricing isn’t exhorbitant. Blade itself didn’t want its pricing structure compared with the current, massive skew in graphics and memory pricing, but clearly, the timing of the firm’s expansion to new territories and the current state of the component market can only help their cause.

Shadow pre-sales are available now and we’ll be carrying out extensive benchmarks, image quality and latency tests when the review package arrives.

PSN Servers Down For Many PS4 Users Right Now

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameSpot

Following an outage earlier this week, the PlayStation Network is again experiencing issues for users on PS4 and PS3. This affects a wide variety of areas of the service, including the ability to log in. That will impede your ability to play games online–including the newly released Monster Hunter World and Dragon Ball FighterZ–and any number of other things.

Sony’s PlayStation support account confirmed the sign-in issues on Twitter, saying only that it is investigating them. The PSN status page paints a grim picture, with all areas (except for PlayStation Vue) experiencing issues. Some aspects of the service are reportedly working–the ability to create an account is apparently unaffected, though you likely won’t be able to sign in or launch certain games and apps.

There’s not yet any word on how soon the problem will be fixed and PSN will be back online. Earlier this week, the problems extended for several hours, though that has no bearing on how long the latest batch of errors will take to resolve.

No Caption Provided

On the bright side, once things have returned to normal, you’ll be able to get online with the aforementioned new releases, both of which are quite good. You can read all about them in our Dragon Ball FighterZ review and Monster Hunter World review, but suffice it to say, they should delight fans–or serve as a great starting point for newcomers, in Monster Hunter’s case.

Check Out the First 20 Minutes of ‘Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery’

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to TouchArcade

Late last night we posted about Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery soft launching on Google Play. It’s made by Jam City, who are responsible for games like Cookie Jam [Free], Family Guy Freakin Mobile Game [Free] and more super popular mass market free to play mobile games. Unsurprisingly, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is also very free to play and features gameplay that seems to be in line with other free to play point and click games. If you watch the video you’ll see a stamina system, multiple currencies, and everything else that I’m sure will upset people around here:

That being said, I’m about 99.9999% sure this game will be an unbelievable success. The character creation, wand selection, and day to day Hogwarts activities are all going to appeal to casual gamer Potter fans to an extent that is just going to be unbelievable to behold. I was going to suggest that if you’re looking for a Harry Potter mobile game that plays a bit more like an traditional video game to check out Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7… Buuuuuut they’re not on the App Store anymore, so, that’s cool.

Watch the First Trailer for the Norse Open-World RPG Rune: Ragnarok

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to IGN Video Games

Take an early look at this long-awaited sequel.

We’ve got an early look at the first trailer for Rune: Ragnarok, an open-world RPG set in a dangerous Norse world. Watch the trailer above to see it in action.

Rune: Ragnarok is the long-awaited sequel to developer Human Head Studios’ original action RPG Rune, which released in 2000. The sequel pits you against Loki and an army of Norse Mythological gods and beasts in what looks like fairly brutal combat – The end of the trailer is particularly gory, with one character beating another with his own, severed arm. Ouch.

Rune: Ragnarok is planning to have an beta later this year, and is currently taking sign-ups on its website for a chance to get in early.

Tom Marks is an Associate Editor focusing on PC gaming at IGN. You can follow him on Twitter.

Sea Of Thieves Beta Now Available To Pre-Load On Xbox One And PC

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameSpot

The closed beta for Microsoft’s upcoming pirate game, Sea of Thieves, is set to begin tomorrow, January 24, and players can now start preparing for it ahead of time. The beta is available to pre-load on both Xbox One and PC, though only certain players will be able to participate in it.

Like the Sea of Thieves technical alpha back in December, tomorrow’s beta is restricted to those who either joined the Sea of Thieves Insider Program prior to December 1, 2017 or have pre-ordered the title. Xbox One players who reserved Sea of Thieves digitally from the Xbox Store will find the beta waiting in the My Games and Apps section of their console’s dashboard, while those who pre-ordered the game on PC via the Microsoft Store will find it in their Library. If you reserved the game at retail, you’ll need to redeem the code you received for the Black Dog cosmetic pack on the Microsoft Store (PC) or Xbox Store (Xbox One) before installing the beta. You can read more about how to install the beta on the official Sea of Thieves website.

The Sea of Thieves closed beta begins at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 12 PM GMT on January 24 and runs until 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET / 8 AM GMT on January 29. Developer Rare hasn’t detailed what players could expect from the beta, but the studio did confirm it won’t be a portion of the full game but rather a tailored experience “that offers a true taste of the pirate life.”

Sea of Thieves is slated to release for Xbox One and PC on March 20, and it will allow cross-play between the two platforms. It’s also the first Xbox One-exclusive that will be available on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on the same day it launches. Before then, Microsoft is releasing a beautiful Sea of Thieves-themed Xbox One controller that comes with a Ferryman Clothing DLC set, as well as 14-day trials for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass.

Beyond the game itself, a Sea of Thieves art book is being published by Dark Horse later this year. Titan Comics is also releasing a Sea of Thieves graphic novel series around the game’s launch in March.

Nvidia wants retailers to prioritize gamers over cryptocurrency miners

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

1.jpg

The cryptocurrency mining craze has created a crummy situation for gamers who just want to upgrade their graphics card. Prices have shot through the roof for nearly every high-end and mid-range option out there, and even some entry-level models. That’s not what Nvidia wants, and it’s sharing that sentiment with its retail partners.

“For Nvidia, gamers come first. All activities related to our GeForce product line are targeted at our main audience,” Nvidia spokesman Boris Böhles told ComputerBase. “To ensure that GeForce gamers continue to have good GeForce graphics card availability in the current situation, we recommend that our trading partners make the appropriate arrangements to meet gamers’ needs as usual,” Böhles added.

ComputerBase notes that some retailers limit graphics card orders to two of the same model per person, in an attempt to dissuade bulk orders by miners. Some sites have interpreted that to mean Nvidia is asking retailers to place a two-card limit on orders, leaving it up to each retailer to ultimately decide to do that or not. However, there’s nothing in Nvidia’s statement that suggests it’s actually recommending a specific limit.

Not that it really matters. Even if Nvidia considers “appropriate arrangements” to be a two-card limit per model, per customer, there is no official restriction in place. And even on sites that choose to implement one, an easy workaround would be to create multiple accounts, and to order different model cards.

Hopefully the situation improves soon. Not much has changed since we rounded up graphics card prices last week—GeForce GTX 1080 Ti cards are still selling for $1,300 and up, while the lowest price GeForce GTX 1060 on Newegg right now is listed at $400, and that’s for a 3GB model. Available stock is typically through a third-party resellers, one of which is selling a 6-pack of GeForce GTX 1060 6GB cards for $3,295. Meanwhile, even Nvidia’s own store shows all of the models other than the Titan Xp as out of stock.

Far Cry 5’s PC specs are a real bear for the highest settings

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

But a bull for average settings

PC players who are looking to systematically dismantle a cult in Far Cry 5 won’t need too much from their system to make it happen. But, those who want to look the best while doing it will need a rig that’s crazier than Eden’s Gate’s leader.

Ubisoft has revealed Far Cry 5‘s PC specs today and they’re all over the place. They range from pretty dang reasonable to nearly top of the line. Here’s what you’ll need just to get the game to run:

Minimum settings:

  • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 @ 3.1 GHz or AMD FX-6300 @ 3.5 GHz or equivalent
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 or AMD R9 270 (2GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0 or better)
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Resolution: 720p
  • Video Preset: Low

You have to bump up your hardware a bit to reach 1080/60, but it’s still not bad:

Recommended settings (60 FPS):

  • OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 @ 3.4 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.2 GHz or equivalent
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD R9 290X (4GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0 or better)
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Video Preset: High

Things take a turn when you’re looking to hit 4K (as with most every game):

4K Configuration (30 FPS):

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit version only)
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 @ 3.4 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X @ 3.6 GHz or equivalent
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD RX Vega 56 (8GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0 or better)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Resolution: 2160p
  • Video Preset: High

And you’ll need to pull out the big guns for 4K at 60FPS:

4K Configuration (60 FPS):

  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit version only)
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.0 GHz or AMD Ryzen 7 1700X @ 3.4 GHz or equivalent
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 SLI or AMD RX Vega 56 CFX (8GB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0 or better)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Resolution: 2160p
  • Video Preset: High/Ultra

That’s right — dual 1080s to get Far Cry 5 playing in the best possible condition. Not a lot of folks are going to hit that, and that’s perfectly fine. Anyone with that sort of SLI/Crossfire configuration has prioritized (and spent) for exactly this type of maximum quality scenario. The rest will be a-okay with reaching the more reasonable recommended settings.

Take a look at Nintendo’s HQ nearly 130 years ago

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Polygon

Nintendo in the Meiji period

Nearly a century before Nintendo became synonymous with video games, the comapny operated as a producer of Hanafuda, or “flower cards,” in a modest building in Kyoto. A rediscovered photo provides a clear look at this moment in the company’s history.

The photo was published online late last year as part of the Meiji150 project, a celebration of Kyoto history on the 150th anniversary of the Meiji era. That was a period from 1868 to 1912 in which Japan, under the reign of Emperor Meiji, emerged from an isolated, feudal society into modernity. The story accompanying the image recounts Fusajiro Yamauchi’s founding of Nintendo, alongside the works of civil engineering that created the infrastructure for the company’s first office.

The image was spotted by Omaké Books, a French publisher that has been tracking the early history of Nintendo for some time. Most recently, they published L’Histoire de Nintendo Vol.1.

After all these years, Nintendo still makes the Hanafuda cards on which it was founded.

God of War Out April 20 on PS4

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PlayStation.Blog

People of PlayStation the world over, God of War is launching April 20, 2018.

I would love to write a long blog post here but, apparently, I have a game to get done by 4/20 so I gotta get back to work as soon as possible.

God of War (PS4)

God of War (PS4)God of War (PS4)

First, let me say that this is my favorite release day of my entire career. If I live to be 100, I do not think I will be able to top this release day.

There has been a long journey just to reach this point, so it’s a little bittersweet to think that we are only a few months away from that journey finally coming to an end. While I am sad, I am also excited because it means everyone will get their hands on this crazy adventure we have been crafting for nearly five years!

Speaking of trailers. Yeah, I just lost interest finding an elegant way to get here from the last paragraph so I just went for it. That is just how I roll. I really am ecstatic that I can finally show you this beautiful trailer we have been cooking up in the creative kitchens of Santa Monica Studio headquarters. It will give you more insight on why Kratos and Atreus are going on their journey as well as provide a glimpse at some new bits of action.

I love this trailer. After I saw it, I pre-ordered the game.

So, April 20, 2018…mark the date on your calendar, people. Clear that schedule, tell your significant other they are wonderful, because that is always a nice thing to do, and then wonder what you will do with all that free time you have now that you don’t need to keep asking me when the release date is.

Thank you everyone for your continued support of our game-making addiction. I will do my best to keep sharing information as we head towards launch.

…But wait, there’s more! I’m proud to share our limited Collector’s Editions and Digital Deluxe Edition, whose every component is connected back to the Norse universe and story of our game.

Pre-Order Offer

ThatGameCompany’s Journey successor Sky looks lovely in 30 new minutes of footage

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Eurogamer.net

Ahead of its hopefully imminent release on iOS, 30 minutes of Journey developer ThatGameCompany’s gorgeous new project, Sky, has appeared online.

Sky, a “mobile social experience” designed to “move audiences emotionally with its theme and story”, according to the developer, was originally unveiled at Apple’s iPhone X event last year. It will launch first on iOS, but quell your mobile game prejudices – it looks and sounds absolutely wonderful in its opening 30 minutes uploaded by AllGamesDelta.

An in-game message at the start of the video describes the footage as being part of a “special preview” of Sky, and notes that the game is still “work-in-progress”. Even with that caveat, it still offers a spellbinding (and obviously spoiler-filled) glimpse at a world bought to life with the same skill and craftsmanship seen in the inimitable Journey.

Everything said and shown of Sky so far, reveals a game that takes Journey’s familiar third-person adventure template, and infuses it with a gently collaborative multiplayer spin.

While other players could occasionally be glimpsed (and vigorously whistled at) in Journey, Sky puts far greater prominence and importance on the existence of fellow humans. Up to eight people are instanced into the same world at once, and, through co-operation and creativity, must work together in order to explore islands and overcome puzzles.

The hope, says ThatGameCompany, is to create “a new experience that promotes compassion, altruism and teamwork within its audience base”. You can see some of those interactions in the video above.

“If you really think about the player-to-player interaction in Journey, it’s very minimal,” explained ThatGameCompany president and creative director Jenova Chen of Sky’s multiplayer focus recently, “It’s almost like playing one single tone across the whole melody. But now with many people we have all kinds of parameters.

“Like the number of people in a scene, the type of mechanics [in which] they engage with each other. Are they helping each other? Are they competing with each other? Are they potentially protecting each other? That interpersonal gameplay is now a new element that we could utilise to add a new feeling to the game.”

There’s currently no release date for Sky, but ThatGameCompany has said that it “would look to publish Sky as a multi-format title” once it’s taken its turn on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

Please look forward to his game.

Yuji Naka

Yuji Naka, the former head of the Sonic Team and lead programmer of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games for Sega Genesis, joined Square Enix in January, he announced on Twitter.

Report: John Cena In Talks To Play Duke Nukem

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to http://www.GameInformer.com

A Duke Nukem movie is being made and invisible WWE superstar John Cena is in talks to play the titular role, according to a story by Hollywood Reporter.

The movie is being produced by Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes. At this point, there is no director attached, or even a script. Hollywood Reporter speculates that, once Cena signs on to the vehicle designed for him, a scriptwriter will be tapped to bring the foul-mouthed hero to the silver screen.

Duke has had a rough go of it for the last decade or so, having most recently appeared as a guest character in the HD Remaster of Bulletstorm. His last full fledged game, however, was the maligned Duke Nukem Forever in 2011, a release of the development hell-burdened title was first announced in 1997.

Duke Nukem first appeared in the game of the same name on in 1991 and later joined the 3D realm with the shock-filled Duke Nukem 3D in 1996.

Eve Online war poised to conclude in $1 million battle

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PCGamesN

eve online moneybadger coalition the imperium

Eve Online’s cold war may turn hot later today with two of the game’s biggest alliances poised to send close to 250 titan class warships into battle against one another. We might be about to see Eve’s first $1 million battle.

Back in 2016, an army calling itself the Moneybadger Coalition, which was bank rolled by online casino-owner Lenny, swept through the Eve universe, driving The Imperium’s forces from their entrenched positions. The war ended ended in the last months of 2016 with The Imperium on the back foot – not wiped out but it had sustained major losses.

Recently, The Imperium has been making noises of a counter invasion. According a great write up by CSMprogodlegend, 2017 was spent in an arms race, with The Imperium and Moneybadger building up their forces. Today, that build up might come to a head. Both sides have mustered their titan fleets, which collectively are worth more than $1m, and are preparing them for battle.

Whether the two armies will actually engage is up for debate, but, if they do, then we could see the most expensive conflict in the game’s history.

The Fall Part 2: Unbound Is Set To Take Over The Switch This February

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Nintendo Life | Latest Updates

Canadian developer Over The Moon has announced that its latest project The Fall Part 2: Unbound will be launching on Nintendo Switch on February 13th.

As a sequel to The Fall, which was originally released on Wii U, this game combines haunting metroidvania exploration with brain teasing point-and-click adventure puzzles. As you can see from the trailer above, there is also a large amount of thoroughly chilling sci-fi present throughout.

The Fall Part 2: Unbound is said to pick up right where its predecessor left off, following the exploits of A.R.I.D., a rogue AI who’s rewritten its protocol to follow one rule: ‘save myself’. The new parameters of A.R.I.D.’s programming have given her the ability to possess new hosts, essentially appearing to control them at her own will by overriding their natural human instincts. Creepy stuff.

Are you considering giving this one a go when it launches next month? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

First footage of ‘Project X’, the game with a 400-player battle royale mode, will premiere at the PC Gamer Weekender

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

1.jpg

Last year, I wrote about developer Automaton’s bold plans to make a 1000-player online game with a 400-person battle royale-style PvP mode. At the PC Gamer Weekender in London on the Saturday (17 February) at midday, they’ll take to the stage to show off the first footage from inside the game, as well as discussing how they built its world. On top of that, there’ll be a few other surprises you won’t want to miss.

‘Project X’ is powered by Improbable’s SpatialOS technology, which allows for ‘meaningful persistence’ that can apparently enhance the level of simulation in games. In this case, that means wildlife, muddy tracks, spreading wildfire and dynamic water, among other environmental details.

“You’re all on an island and it’s set in the near future,” Automaton’s James Thompson told me about the game’s world in September. “There’s a reason you’re all there. There is a central capital which runs the area. You have four faction towns which have different agendas—they [either want] to live there and make the best of what they have, or they’re really trying to take over. And you’re part of this set of people who have come in and you are going to be here to overthrow the whole regime, effectively, and that will literally happen.”

Learn much more about that premise at the Weekender at the London Olympia, February 17-18, then. You can save 20% off tickets right now with the code PC-GAMER20, too. Get them here. Here are some environmental shots of ‘Project X’:

Here is everything that Monster Hunter: World’s day one update will do

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

Because why be online ready on disc?

I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this news, but Monster Hunter: World will be receiving a day one update. Buying the game and putting the disc in your console won’t be enough if you plan to play online. After acquiring the game, you’ll then need to download an 815 MB patch that will grant you access to the servers. How convenient…

The day one patch won’t only just enable online support, though. The other changes are relegated to language support, which is at least nice. I’m not sure why this wasn’t just included on the disc, but at least non-English speakers will have the opportunity to experience Monster Hunter.

Additional Systems

  • Unlocks online-use systems including multiplayer, event quests, and chat.
  • Adds function to receive additional content to the player’s My House room service.
  • Adds gallery function to the title menu to replay event scenes.
    • Adds a Gallery Mode that enables you to watch the event scenes you have previously seen. The appearance of the player character will change based on the save data.
  • Mascot character Poogie added to Research Commission HQ.
    • As you progress through the story, Poogie will appear in the distribution area of Research Commission HQ. You can deepen your friendship with him through skillful petting. If you pick him up and take him around, something good may happen.

Additional Display Languages

In addition to the Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish included in all versions of the game, the following display languages have been added for specific versions:

  • Japan: No additional languages
  • Asia: Traditional Chinese and Korean
  • North America: Brazilian Portuguese
  • Europe: Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, and Arabic

Additional voiced languages have not been added. All versions of the game will feature Monster Hunter language, Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish voiced language options.

The German game ratings board’s cleaning crew almost threw Nintendo Labo in the garbage

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

Oops

Nintendo Labo is basically a combination of cardboard and software designed to spur the creative spark in all of us. Unless you mistake it as literal cardboard and almost throw it out.

This story from the German ratings board (USK) is chuckle-worthy — according to a tweet from the board, their cleaning crew almost threw out the sample Nintendo had sent. Translated, the tweet states, “Finally we can tell the story, when we had the latest Nintendo hardware, it was almost dumped by the cleaning crew as waste paper. In the past no one would have believed this story, anyway.”

I’m not sure what to think about Nintendo Labo yet. I mean, I can dig the idea of marketing STEM concepts to kids. It’s been a pretty widespread trend the past year with a handful of startups, so it makes perfect sense why a major player would be getting in on the fun.

But! This is Nintendo we’re talking about here. The inventor of the Game Boy Printer, and the Wii Vitality Sensor. I had to read droves of articles about how the latter would “change the industry forever,” until it was silently canceled four years after it was announced. Labo seems like a more concerted effort, and pre-orders are even up right now, but if it doesn’t take off I can see Nintendo canning it.

Here’s the first trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on Switch

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to destructoid

1.jpg

And further proof of a March 22 release

As we learned last week, we’re getting a “No, really this is actually the final version, we promise” re-release of Hyrule Warriors on the Switch. Nintendo even went so far as to call it “The Ultimate Version of Hyrule Warriors.” Can’t get much more definitive than ultimate.

Now we have the first trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition courtesy of Koei Tecmo. It’s in Japanese, but it gets the point across. It cuts to a bunch of characters and features all the frantic sword-swinging we’d expect.

As for actual details, the Nintendo mini-Direct was the best place for that (here’s a time-stamped link). That’s where we found out that Definitive Edition has every map, character, and mission for both the Wii U and 3DS versions including all DLC; that it’s 1080p in TV mode; that it has two-player split-screen support; and that there are exclusive Link and Zelda Breath of the Wild outfits.

However, maybe the most important thing about this trailer is that it seemingly corroborates the supposed release date. Although Nintendo has only pinned this down to a Spring launch, a press release went out in Hong Kong that had a March 22 date attached to it. The end of this Japanese trailer also indicates March 22. So yeah, it’s probably coming out on March 22, at least in Asian territories.

If the trailer and all that info isn’t enough for you, check out this Definitive Edition game page on Game City’s site. It has that Hyrule Warriors aesthetic that you crave. If you’re curious how certain Dtoid editors feel about this, Jordan just told me “I feel like they own my soul and I’ll have to play this for 200 hours.” I know for a fact that he put about that much time into the Wii U version. I might have to break his Switch. It’s the only way to set him free.

No Man’s Sky’s Waking Titan ARG is back, and fans are trying to figure it all out again

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to Eurogamer.net

No Man’s Sky’s entertainingly convoluted Waking Titan ARG appears to be back, and fans are picking apart its mysterious messages in a bid to work out what might be next for Hello Games’ ever-expanding space game.

Waking Titan began meting out its carefully orchestrated parade of online and real-world enigmas soon after it was discovered in May last year. Before long, participants had linked it to No Man’s Sky, and it eventually culminated, some three months later, with the release of the game’s 1.3 update, also known as Atlas Rises. There’s a great summary video of the whole ARG so far by YouTuber CobraTV below.

Atlas Rises added an enormous number of features and improvements to No Man’s Sky, including a brand-new story, interstellar portals, a new alien race, improvements to exploration, flight, and trading, randomly generated quests, and even the beginnings of multiplayer co-op. It was a big ‘un, and managed to rekindle my initially short-lived enthusiasm for the game into a 200+ hour obsession.

When update 1.3 launched, Hello Games called it “an important first step into the world of synchronous co-op in No Man’s Sky”, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new update – hopefully featuring further improvements to multiplayer – ever since.

Now that the Waking Titan ARG appears to have spluttered back to life, many fans believe that the release of No Man’s Sky’s next big update is, if not exactly imminent, being teased and on the way.

At present, as chronicled by the invaluable Waking Titan Wiki, investigations are largely focussed on the Waking Titan website. As of late December last year, the tenth of 15 glyphs has been unlocked; clicking the glyph at the bottom of the site brings up a password entry screen and a link to a Google Drive folder featuring a number of images reflected in mirrors. There’s also the matter of Sean Murray’s suspiciously timely Black Mirror tweet below too.

Neither the password or the relevance of the mirrors (interestingly, the titles of the photos, when strung together, also produce an anagram for “mirror” in hexidecimal) is yet known.

Better progress has been made on the command entry portion of the site. Prior to the launch of update 1.3, inputting specific commands on the terminal screen elicited certain responses. Since December, fans have discovered a number of tantalising new responses to old commands. Typing in “WhoIs”, for instance, returns the value “#WhatIs1.5”.

That’s immediately intriguing, and slightly confounding, given that the next expected No Man’s Sky update is 1.4. Some fans are convinced that Hello Games may be poised to surprise-launch a 1.4 update any day now (it’s been roughly three months since 1.3 launched, and previous updates have released every three months or so, goes the thinking), while the ARG focusses on a major 1.5 update. Of course, “1.5” might refer to something else entirely.

1

One of the physical Atlas Passes currently in circulation (Source: Waking Titan Wiki).

As for what update 1.5 might include on its arrival, that’s anyone guess right now. One theory though (based on the fact that the command “WhoAmI” returns a “not yet unlocked” value, rather than a generic message) is that 1.5 might allow players to define an avatar-style presence for themselves in-game, ready for the expanded multiplayer – which might also explain the recurring “mirror” theme. Currently, other players are represented by generic orbs when together on the same planet.

The only other known puzzle piece at present is tied to the physical Atlas Passes that certain participants in the previous ARG phase have begun to receive. These include a series of hexidecimals which can be decoded to read “phoenix”. Some have speculated that this may be implying that No Man’s Sky’s universe is due for another reset come the next update.

With this latest phase of the Waking Titan ARG seemingly only just beginning, it could be a while before No Man’s Sky’s newest mysteries are solved. It’s exciting to watch unfold, though.
