PLANET ALPHA’s Launch Trailer Displays a Universe of Color and Danger

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on DualShockers September 4, 2018 at 03:01PM.)

The latest trailer for Team 17’s PLANET ALPHA shows an array of the beautiful settings available within the game and the dangers that lie in wait.

The ongoing “games-as-art” debate has been a long and jaded affair. More to the point, those pushing the no side of the argument have obviously never seen a game like PLANET ALPHA.

Long-standing indie outfit Team 17’s latest release is absolutely gorgeous to behold, as detailed in its latest trailer. Starting off on a harsh and jagged alien desert, the trailer begins to walk us through a number of the spectacular environments that the game has to offer. Along the way, we see beautiful scenery including vibrant purple plant-life that gives the area screen a subtle tint, enormous majestic beasts wandering the landscape, and great canyons that give the 2D platformer a real feeling of depth.

Destiny 2: Forsaken Gives Players Their Voice Back In Launch Trailer

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on GameSpot – All Content August 28, 2018 at 11:33AM.)

The release of Destiny 2‘s biggest DLC expansion yet, Forsaken, is right around the corner, and to get players pumped for the game’s next chapter, Bungie has released a new launch trailer. It features a funeral of sorts for one of Destiny’s most prominent characters, as well as the return of another–Uldren Sov–who serves as the primary antagonist in Forsaken.

Bungie’s new video starts out by capping off what we’ve seen previously, where Cayde-6 fights off countless foes before his Ghost is destroyed. That leads to Sov, whom you might remember as the Queen of the Reef’s brother, killing Cayde. From there, we see Ikora Rey holding a funeral for Cayde and swearing to avenge him, while Zavala is unwilling to risk anyone’s life.

It’s at that point we see what is maybe the most significant bit of the trailer, when a Titan vows to hunt down Sov himself. This would appear to be a character standing in for the Guardian that you play as; if that’s true, that marks the first time you actually speak in Destiny 2. Until this point, your Ghost did all the talking.

From there, we see your character and Petra Venj (a Queen loyalist) strike a deal with a portly Fallen to help track down Sov. He, meanwhile, burns down the throne room of the Reef and rambles about various things.

All in all, it’s an exciting look at the new expansion, if only because your motivation–hunting down Cayde’s killer–is as clear and impactful as can be.

Forsaken’s release date is set for September 4 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. We already know exactly when its accompanying update will launch, although we don’t yet have full patch notes. Ahead of release, you’ll be able to try out the DLC’s big new mode, Gambit, as part of a one-day trial on September 1. For more, check out our Forsaken pre-order guide.

Arcade-Style Co-Op Shooter RICO Scores New Trailer And Release Window

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Nintendo Life | Latest Updates August 22, 2018 at 06:31AM.)

Adding to the onslaught of Gamescom news and announcements, Rising Star Games has revealed a brand new trailer for RICO.

This arcade-style, first-person shooter was first revealed for Switch in March this year. Inspired by modern action cinema, RICO has you and a friend playing as a pair of loose-cannon police partners, trying to crack a case as part of an elite organised crime task force in just 24 hours.

Its in-game planning is described as being “tactical rather than strategic”, with players needing to react to shootouts as they unfurl right there in the moment, gaining additional time to assess the situation if they are able to surprise their adversaries. The emphasis seems to be on simply having a fun time with your buddy, however, with the game’s PR telling us to “just kick down doors, shoot bad guys, and exploit the element of surprise to gain the upper hand”.

Gameplay features:
•    Online co-op and offline split-screen play

•    “Daily play” with online leaderboards

•    Randomly generated cases, operations, and environments

•    Unlockable weapons, traits, and mission types

•    Compete against the clock to solve a case in 24 hours

Originally, RICO was destined to arrive on Switch this autumn, but the date has now been pushed back to “early 2019”.

Does this one pique your interest? Let us know if you’ll be joining up with a friend for this one in the comments.

Liminal Turns Gravity On Its Side Through Brain-Bending Spatial Puzzles

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on IndieGames August 22, 2018 at 01:55AM.)

lim.jpg

Gravitational orientation becomes your plaything in Liminal, a polished student project available on Steam that combines space-shifting doorways and a twisting sci-fi puzzle labyrinth.

Liminal‘s main method of gravity manipulation lies in the relationship between “Krobs”, robotic spiders that double as keys, and space-bending doorways that let you pass through them like portals. Walking through linked doors can suddenly shift you and gravity to be walking along what was a wall, or turn a hallway into a long drop, or connect separate rooms.

While the early puzzles are simply tests of connecting the right doors at the right time, the orientation-shifting effect of the doors add increasing complex, along with additional mechanics as you traverse around the weird interiors and exteriors of a crawling, legged facility.

Liminal can be downloaded for free on Steam. The game is currently in Early Access, with improvements and a new area with new mechanics to be added in the future.

New Metro Exodus trailer teases some of the horrors that await in the PS4 horror sequel

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on PlayStation.Blog.Europe August 20, 2018 at 02:10PM.)

Thousands of kilometres from the ruins of Moscow, Artyom and his Spartan companions discover what seems like paradise – a lush, green valley, teeming with life.

But if their years in the Metro have taught them one thing, it is this: The night brings terror. And here, terror has a new face…

Our new trailer from Gamescom gives you your first look at the Valley area in Metro Exodus, an area of the game that is playable at Gamescom this week. Here you’ll be introduced to a new faction (The Children Of The Forest) and you’ll get ‘up close’ with some of the local wildlife.

Wolves

Not all beasts roaming the surface are mutants, but unfortunately, as in this case, they can be equally vicious. Ravenous and territorial, wolves should be considered incredibly dangerous.

A lone wolf can cause problems if not dealt with quickly. However, they are pack animals by nature and if you come across a group you’ll need to have keen wits and good aim to get away unscathed.

TITLE

Mutated Bear

It is said that when encountering a bear in the wild you should remain calm and never run. It goes without saying this does not apply here. The Mutated Bear is a lethal threat to anything that gets close.

Thick bones and tough gristled muscles make it extremely resistant to any kind of firearm save for the heaviest ones, but its thick fur is rather susceptible to incendiary weapons.

TITLE

Shrimp

It was not only creatures above the ground that were shaped by the radiation that plagued the surface. Known as Shrimp, these mysterious aquatic life forms seemed to evolve from some form of crustacean. The male of the species will use its huge shelled arms as a shield, and do quite a lot of damage if it takes a swipe at you.

TITLE

Join us on our hands-on tour to meet these creatures in game. We’re at Gamescom this week, but this is just the beginning. We’ll be at PAX West, EGX, Paris Games Week, Igromir and more in the coming months. You can find a list of events on the official site.

Metro Exodus is also now available to pre-order on PlayStation Store now.

The Standard Edition includes an exclusive Metro Exodus ‘Winter’ Dynamic Theme. Pre-order the Gold Edition to get the Winter Dynamic Theme, an additional ‘Spring’ Dynamic Theme, official soundtrack and the Expansion Pass granting access to all new adventures. Want to get a sneak preview of the Dynamic Themes? Here’s what they look like…

Metro Exodus arrives on PlayStation 4 on 22nd February 2019.

See you in the wastelands, Spartan!

One Piece: World Seeker Gets Its First Gameplay Trailer

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to GameInformer.com

World Seeker is an open world One Piece game, and it looks like it may be taking cues from the Batman: Arkham games.

Along with being able to swing and leap through the game’s open city world, the gameplay trailer also shows Luffy activating a detective vision-like ability to look through walls and see enemies. The trailer also shows off a healthy collection of Luffy’s combat abilities, many taken directly from the manga/anime.

One Piece: World Seeker is coming later this year.

Rage 2 gets a gameplay trailer, due in 2019

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

Screen Shot 2018-05-15 at 1.47.25 PM.png

Walmart leaked it, Twitter teased it, and Bethesda confirmed it, all within the space of a week. Rage 2 is happening, we learned for certain yesterday, with Doom masterminds id Software and Just Cause and Max Max developer Avalanche Studios at its helm.

Monday’s live-action announcement trailer echoes the latter, with a cast of excitable road warrior types punching, kicking and dousing themselves in lager. Now, we know Rage 2 is out next year, we know the premise of its story, and we’ve got a glimpse at how it’ll look in practice.

First, an explosive gameplay trailer:

Second, story details. Rage 2’s post-apocalypse comes courtesy of an asteroid that’s wiped out 80 percent of the world’s population. Filling the dusty boots of Walker—”the last Ranger of the wasteland”—you’ve lost your home to The Authority, an autocratic gang who rule with an iron fist.

“Now you’ll have to rage for justice and freedom,” says Bethesda in a statement. “With ludicrous vehicle combat, super-powered first-person mayhem, and an open world full of emergent madness, you will tear across an unforgiving wasteland battling sadistic gangs to find the tools and tech needed to crush the oppressive rule of The Authority once and for all.”

With that, players are given a “vast and varied” landscape to explore, filled with jungles, swamps and desert plains. You’ll do so on foot or at the wheel of everything from monster trucks to gyrocopters as you pursue your adversaries. You’ll leverage an arsenal of upgradable weapons, ‘Nanotrite’ powers, and ‘Overdrive’—”the ability to push your guns beyond their mechanical limits”—in order to succeed. And you’ll fight an ensemble of hostile natives, mutants, and monsters, lest you succumb to the badlands.

More information on all of that can be gleaned from this blog post. No concrete launch date as yet, but Rage 2 is expected at some point in spring 2019. Expect more from Bethesda’s #BE3 showcase on June 10 at 6.30pm PST/June 11 at 2.30am BST.

Watch the First Trailer for the Norse Open-World RPG Rune: Ragnarok

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to IGN Video Games

Take an early look at this long-awaited sequel.

We’ve got an early look at the first trailer for Rune: Ragnarok, an open-world RPG set in a dangerous Norse world. Watch the trailer above to see it in action.

Rune: Ragnarok is the long-awaited sequel to developer Human Head Studios’ original action RPG Rune, which released in 2000. The sequel pits you against Loki and an army of Norse Mythological gods and beasts in what looks like fairly brutal combat – The end of the trailer is particularly gory, with one character beating another with his own, severed arm. Ouch.

Rune: Ragnarok is planning to have an beta later this year, and is currently taking sign-ups on its website for a chance to get in early.

Epic is making a free-to-play tactical RPG called Battle Breakers

Epic Games announced earlier today that it had around six games in development. It looks like one of them is Battle Breakers, a free-to-play tactical RPG inspired by Saturday morning cartoons from the ’80s. The game will feature all manner of characters from the likes of ninjas, dinosaurs, robots, and knights along with having cross-platform play between mobile devices and PC.

In Epic’s own words, “Master the elements and defeat your enemies with strategy, smash crystals to unlock hidden treasures, and power up your hero squads to take back the Kingdom, one break at a time!” The game will feature turn-based combat and the ability to harness the power of tsunamis, earthquakes, and firestorms as well as some base building stuff.

Video via BattleBreakers

No release date has been given, but you can pre-register for the game on the Google Play store and from Epic’s website. Signing up will net you the “Dark Beastman” character. Below are from quick screencaps from the game, though they don’t show much of what Battle Breakers is even about.

GreedFall is a Fantasy RPG with Combat, Diplomacy, and Deception

Hi everyone! My name is Jehanne Rousseau and I’m the CEO at Spiders. We’ve been hard at work on the PS4 version of GreedFall, our latest RPG. Here’s our first teaser trailer!

Video via PlayStation

GreedFall is set in a fantasy world with magic, adventure, and 17th century weaponry. We’re looking for a very unique visual aesthetic inspired by Baroque art from 17th Century Europe, complete with grandiose sceneries and environments in warm, muted colors, and dark undertones.

Explore a new world as you set foot alongside other settlers, mercenaries, and treasure hunters on a remote island seeping with magic, rumored to be filled with riches and lost secrets. A grand journey awaits as you find yourself in the middle of ever-increasing tensions between the invading settlers and the locals protected by supernatural beings and manifestations of the island’s earthly magic.

GreedFall is an RPG at its core: it follows our experience in building intricate worlds filled with mysteries to discover. By weaving deep character interactions, and offering players multiple options and paths to accomplish quests and objectives (you can explore combat, diplomacy, deception, or stealth), this is going to be our biggest game yet! The island of GreedFall is a living, ever-evolving world. Your actions, from seemingly trivial choices to the most important political decisions, will influence and affect its course as well as the relationship between the different factions established on the island.

GreedFall is planned for launch in 2018. We will reveal more about the game in the weeks and months to come. Stay tuned!

Here’s everything that’s new and noteworthy in the leaked Project Cars 2 trailer

Project Cars 2, Slightly Mad Studios’ not-so-secret follow-up to 2015’s well-received driving game, has broken cover ahead of its proper unveiling with a leaked trailer revealing a tonne of new details. Let’s have a look at the trailer then figure out what it all means, shall we?

Video via RaceDriver

1

First up, as you may well have gathered from the name and the subject matter, Project Cars 2 will have cars. And plenty of them (I promise the analysis will get a bit deeper as we go on). First up there’s a look at the McLaren P1 GTR, of which only 45 were ever made. Project Cars 2 is probably your best bet at actually having a go behind the wheel of this ludicrous bastard of a car.

2

Next up, we have weather! The headline addition, it seems, is snow, with what looks like an icy lake being pounded around by a brave soul in a Merc. New conditions such as this seem to be a key part of what Project Cars 2 is all about.

3

And look, more weather! Slighty Mad Studios has perfectly modelled the chill wind that rolls across Kent on a cold autumnal Sunday at Brands Hatch, and changing wind conditions look like they’ll also be playing a part. It’s a key part of motorsport that has never really found its way into a video game – there’s obviously a clear benefit to be had from a tail-wind when pummelling down a straight, just as you might find slipstreaming might be more effective when two cars are confronted with a head-wind. Exciting stuff. Well, exciting if you’re me, anyway.

4

Oh hey, there’s even more weather! The pooling puddles at the edges of a track suggest that Slightly Mad Studios is doubling down on variable weather, which is a welcome focus. In recent years developers of racing games seem to have got it into their heads that variable weather is a last-gen feature – Forza Motorsport 6 introduced wet weather that was baked into tracks, while Gran Turismo Sport is also doing away with the variable conditions that were a staple of the PS3 iterations of Polyphony’s series. As a fan of endurance racing – and someone who spent a large part of the past weekend watching the rain showers batter the competitors through the night at the Daytona 24 hours – it’s a massive shame to see games take this turn, so I’m heartened that Project Cars 2 is making headway in this area.

5

And here’s another puddle. What, you expect me to write another 100 words just on some water?

6

Druids hairpin at Brands Hatch, seen through a quick succession of seasons. From this we can guess that more extreme weather conditions will be available at most locations. It doesn’t actually snow all that often in that part of Kent – the open surrounds of Silverstone are more conducive to such extremes, as we saw during the practice days of last year’s WEC opening round – but cars have certainly raced there in such conditions. Who could forget Tom Pryce’s win in the non-championship F1 race in 1975 Race of Champions as he led home John Watson and Ronnie Peterson in miserable rain and snow? Don’t tell me you forgot.

7

Here’s an interesting look at a GT3 Huracan. What’s interesting about it, you ask? Well, it’s the decals that fascinate me. The car’s plastered with fake sponsors – something of a bugbear of mine about the original Project Cars, as I’m all about the authenticity – but the number carries Blancpain branding. Could Slightly Mad Studios have picked up the Blancpain licence? I sincerely hope so, as it’s got the track list and car list to do justice to the GT series, and it’s been so, so long since we’ve had a decent and authentic racing simulator that echoes the real thing.

8

This looks very much to me like a Porsche 935, the 911 designed by Norbert Singer to comply with the FIA’s Group 5 rules that gave birth to a generation of outlandish and spectacular racing cars. The Porsche licence is no longer under lock and key by EA, so perhaps it’s our first look at a whole raft of Porkers from Project Cars 2. Just give me a 917 and a classic Le Mans and you’re looking at Essential material straight off the bat.

9

Rallycross! Codemasters has the official licence for the FIA world series, and it’ll be using it to prop up Dirt 4, but that doesn’t stop Slightly Mad Studios from having some fun with the off-road racing discipline.

10

And finally here’s a race-spec XJ220. The XJ220 always felt to me like a precursor to the hypercars such as the P1 that we see today, though for some reason I always had a softer spot for the XJR-15 which was produced around the same time and prepped by Tom Walkinshaw for a series that accompanied the F1 circus for a short while. And while we’re talking prime Jaguars of the 90s, if Slightly Mad Studios wants to have a crack at the XJR-14 that dominated the World Sportscar Championship in 1991 I’d be very happy indeed.

11

And last but not least, here’s a logo!

We’re expecting Project Cars 2 at some point before the year’s end, and there should be some more official information on its way from Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Bandai Namco shortly.

Akuma is coming to Street Fighter V

1.PNG

Playable at PSX in December

Right during the Red Bull Battlegrounds North American Regional Finals, Capcom teased the appearance of Akuma in Street Fighter V. He’s not too far off either, as he’ll be playable on December 3 at the PlayStation Experience event — though no hard date was given.

Fans have been speculating about the kanji on his back in the trailer, which roughly translates to “god above man,” leading to the expectation that he’ll either morph into or be playable in his Shin form. Either way Akuma has been one of my go-tos for over a decade so I’m jazzed to be able to give him a go in both this and Tekken 7.

Sony picks up samurai action-RPG Nioh for North America and Europe

While Koei Tecmo is still publishing Nioh for PlayStation 4 in Japan, Sony has stepped in to rep Team Ninja’s oni-slaying samurai game in North America, Europe, and Asia (outside of Japan).

Considering this is the game many of us hungry Souls fans are anticipating in a post-Dark Souls III world, that’s a fairly big move. Infamously, Sony decided against publishing From Software’s 2009 dark-fantasy action-RPG Demon’s Souls in North America, instead leaving that job to Atlus.

I’m not quite sure what this means for Nioh‘s future on other platforms (I would hope it doesn’t remain an exclusive forever), but Sony should at least be in a good position to promote this game hard. There aren’t too many companies making these sorts of titles, and I’d hate to see it bomb.

If you tried one of the early versions of Nioh but didn’t read up on it further, you might be surprised by this story-focused extended TGS trailer. Which is to say there actually is a narrative here, one that weaves legends and folklore around the real-world Western samurai William Adams.

Video via PlayStation EU

Sony has also covered the various visual options we’ll get to choose between in the final version of the game, whether we’re playing on a standard PS4 or a PS4 Pro. This is the good stuff right here:

  • PS4, Option 1: “Movie Mode”
This mode focuses on resolution over frame rate, offering beautiful high resolution graphics with stable 30fps
  • PS4, Option 2: “Action Mode”
Here the emphasis is on frame rate, providing a stable 60fps
  • PS4, Option 3: “Movie Mode (Variable frame rate)”
Finally, this option provides high resolution graphics with a variable frame rate that may go over 30fps.
  • PS4 Pro, HD display. Option 1: “Movie Mode”
Stable 1920×1080 resolution with high quality anti-aliasing at 30fps
  • PS4 Pro, HD display. Option 2: “Action Mode”
    Stable 1920×1080 resolution at 60fps
  • PS4 Pro, 4K display. Option 1: “Movie Mode”
    Stable 3840×2160 resolution at 30fps
  • PS4 Pro, 4K display. Option 2: “Action Mode”
    Stable 1920×1080 resolution at 60fps

Early 2017 is positively stacked for games, but I’ll be sure to set aside time for Nioh in February (unless something goes horribly, tragically awry leading up to release; I loved the public alpha).

Owlboy released today and you probably want in on that

Video via D-Pad Studio

“Revered. Exalted. Wise. These are the traits of your fellow owls.” That’s how the launch trailer for Owlboy begins. It’s especially cutting because Otus, the titular owlboy, is considered none of these by his peers. He’s a dunce, a mistake, a loser.

Early on, Otus sets out on a mission to save his village. But, it feels like that’s a secondary priority. Proving himself to the community and to the teacher who inexplicably hates him feels more important. Whether or not that happens is anyone’s guess. However, this trailer would have you believe that his journey is grand regardless of the outcome.

Admittedly, I’m not that far into Owlboy — maybe three of nine hours or so. I can see the underpinnings of greatness, though. In our official review, Patrick gave Owlboy a perfect 10 that was brimming with praise like “I could spend forever talking about moments, both little and big, that occur in Owlboy that are just so smart, but it’s better just to experience them for yourself.” So far, I’m inclined to agree. But, like Patrick said, you should maybe just experience it for yourself.

PC Gaming Review: GoNNER | ESIST

DiscoverPlayer CharacterGunLadder TournamentFinal Boss

GoNNER (PC)
Developer: Art in Heart
Publisher: Raw Fury
Released: October 12, 2016
MSRP: $9.99

I gushed about GoNNER when I played it at PAX East this year, calling it “hands-down my favorite game” of the show. Now, it’s one of my favorite games of the year.

This spooky yet cute platformer has you collecting various heads, guns, and backpacks on every run as you develop the skills required to reach the final boss. Once an item is found you’ll be able to use it at the start of any run without having to find it again. Heads change the way your movement work as well as how much health you start with, and backpacks grant you special abilities that can be used infinitely on a cooldown, such as reloading your gun, firing a ton of shots rapidly in succession, or causing a ring of explosions to surround you momentarily.

Levels are drawn around your character as you go, which makes for one of the more interesting art styles I’ve seen in a while. I always will appreciate when a game goes for style over realism, because it typically makes the game timeless whereas today’s “best graphics ever” look like shit in a few years’ time. The player character and enemies are all so adorable, including Sally, a giant beached whale who is your best friend that you’ll run across from time to time. I friggin’ love Sally. She always happily smiles upon seeing the player character and gives you health to show appreciation for your friendship. Dawwwww.

The gunplay and movement are very reminiscent of the critically acclaimed Downwell in that each gun has a different feel and kickback, plus you can slide down walls, wall jump, and jump on enemies to damage them. Even though I only came across six guns (there are supposedly tons of secrets in this game with more being added in updates), each felt equally powerful and useful, depending on which one of the four levels I was currently in. Just before the bosses of each level, you’ll come across a shop where you can purchase the different items if you’ve got enough glyphs to do so, as well as refill your ammo and health. Glyphs are earned by quickly killing enemies in a row and are also used to continue should you die.

You’ll die, a lot, but it never feels unfair. Generally, upon getting hit, all your items fall off and you’ve got to scramble around headless to quickly grab them before you get hit a second time and die, regardless of the amount of health your skull has. When swarmed by a ton of enemies in later stages, this can prove quite challenging, which is probably why the online leaderboards heavily favor the skull that keeps all your parts together upon getting hit. It is a strange mechanic, but it works aside from a few cheap deaths where your body will fall down a hole after getting hit, or you lose your skull or weapons meaning you’ll have to find new ones or hope you can survive till the shop.

GoNNER is not a long game. Itt can be completed in under 20 minutes, that is if you’re the shining golden god of gaming. It took me a total of six hours to finally have a successful run and kill the final boss, which feels about right considering the $10 price tag. My final run lasted exactly 17 minutes, which was on the lower end considering most on the leaderboards were around 25 minutes or so. While there doesn’t seem to be much to do after completing the game aside from attempting to string together lengthy combos to achieve high scores (which while admittedly is a blast, won’t keep me playing), that’s fine. I’m more than happy with the time I put in with the game already.

It is unfortunate that GoNNER is seemingly flying under the radar. It is a damned good game by all measures with addictive gameplay, catchy music, a great art style, and just the right amount of challenge. If you’re looking for your next favorite roguelike platformer, look no further.

SUPERB

A hallmark of excellence. It may have some flaws, but they are negligible to what is otherwise a supreme title.

How the team behind Titanfall 2 built a titan you’ll actually care about.

Titanfall takes place in a war-torn future, a place where human pilots ride around in giant mech suits called titans to do battle. It’s a grim place, and the titans are seen as powerful weapons, ones that can change the tide of a skirmish almost instantly. The original Titanfallused this setup as the basis for a multiplayer action game, and the sequel is hoping to build on that by adding a proper single-player story. The new campaign puts you in the role of a militia rifleman named Jack Cooper, but what really differentiates Titanfall 2 from its predecessor is his partner, a titan named BT-7274 (BT for short).

Instead of a blank automaton, BT is an actual character who can act on his own and has a distinct personality — sort of a cross between the Iron Giant and the Pixar lamp, only armed with a machine gun and missiles. At the same time, BT’s also a titan, a mech that players can ride around in during battle. This unique duality of the character means that he behaves differently depending on the situation. “His own personality gets sublimated when he’s following the pilot’s will,” explains Joel Emslie, art director at Respawn Entertainment. “And then he returns to his own natural personality.”

Work on BT started out much the same as it does on every other titan in the game. (Titanfall 2’s multiplayer mode will introduce six new titans, compared to the original game’s roster of three.) First comes the R&D phase: artists and animators play around with both 3D models and practical models made of plastic, while trying to find the basic look for the character. From the very beginning they knew that BT had to be different from the other titans in order to work with the new story mode.

“We took the titans from the first game, and we wanted to make one that emoted well for the player, so you could see what [BT] was feeling,” explains Kevin Andersen, a concept artist and modeler at Respawn. “But not be so cutesy like Short Circuit or a Wall-E. It still had to live in this war-torn, futuristic world. That’s where the design process for the main character forTitanfall 2 started for us.”

“IT STILL HAD TO LIVE IN THIS WAR-TORN, FUTURISTIC WORLD.”

To create BT’s personality, the team looked to some surprising places for inspiration. In Titanfall’s fiction, human pilots and robotic titans become partners and form deep, lasting connections. At the outset of Titanfall 2, BT has just lost his human partner, and you’re the new guy taking his spot. To create this dynamic, the team at Respawn looked at a number of buddy cop movies from the 1980s; think Lethal Weapon or Beverly Hills Cop. But it was tough to find the right balance between making BT a lovable partner and 20-foot-tall war machine. “Early on he was either like a little puppy dog that would follow you around, or he came off like a dick,” explains Emslie. “When we got to this point where people started not liking him we knew we went too far.”

All told, it took around seven months of work by a team of five to get the balance right. Elements were added to BT that allowed him to seem more human. He has a large emotive eye that lets you know exactly where he’s looking, as well as an additional pair of smaller robotic arms on his back that make it easier to interact with people. When he hears something, he’ll turn his head quizzically like a dog in the direction the sound came from. “As soon as you disembark, you get to see all of these little gestures and mannerisms,” says animator Shawn Wilson. For instance, when you’re piloting BT he’s right-handed, but when he’s acting of his own will he switches back to his left hand.

Film was a big inspiration for other aspects of the character as well. BT not only had to act differently from the other, more static titans, he also had to look different. When you’re in the midst of a hectic battle filled with other soldiers, mechs, and explosions, you need to be able to spot your partner right away. Creating a defined silhouette was a key priority. For this the team looked at Akira Kurosawa samurai films and old spaghetti Westerns. In those movies, when a Clint Eastwood-type gunslinger strolled into town, you could tell who he was just from his silhouette. Respawn wanted that for BT.

“It was very important to ensure that even if you put BT up against a frosted glass window and could just see his silhouette like a shadow puppet, that his silhouette had to completely stand out against all of the other titans,” explains Emslie. “That way when you’re in a really bad situation as a player and you’re not with him, you can easily tell where he is and find him in a crowd.” In addition to having a defined silhouette, BT was also designed so that his back is a brighter color than the front, so you can easily tell if he’s facing you — a useful feature if you need to get in the cockpit in a hurry.

From this base the team continued to build on the BT concept with more details. A giant talking robot could easily turn into something silly and out of place in a game about war, and so BT’s design is grounded in more realistic elements to make the character more believable. Like the rest of the Titanfall universe, his look pulls heavily from modern-day military technology. BT’s angular body, for instance, was inspired by the Apache helicopter. Meanwhile, many of the other smaller details were put in place to give a better sense of scale. BT’s body is dotted with handles and ladders, so that no matter what angle you’re looking at, you can tell he’s a massive machine.

Titanfall 2

“YOU CAN KIND OF TELL THAT THIS DUDE IS PRETTY BIG.”

“When you have a 20-foot-tall titan, depending on your view things can get toned down, and change the effect of the scale,” says Emslie. “So putting some contemporary military details into the design also serves a purpose, in helping to visually tell the story of its scale. You can see there’s a ladder on his leg, so you can kind of tell that this dude is pretty big.” (In order to ensure that those small details were where they should be and accessible to an actual human character, the team tested things out by dragging a disembodied human hand around a virtual 3D model of the character.)

Elements of the design were changed based on the needs of the game — for example, BT has multiple battery packs because of a particular story moment — while others were added for more personal reasons. The tiny arms on BT’s back were originally put in place because of one of Anderson’s hobbies. “I’m a real enthusiast for model kits, and I thought that if somebody pays a lot of money for the toy of this, he should hold all of the parts,” he says of the reasoning behind the extra arms. “When you’re a kid, you lose the extra parts if you don’t have them on there.” The arms ended up being a key part of the character, and were so useful that they were later added to other titans as well.

But even with all of this attention to detail, it wasn’t until months into the design process that BT really felt like a proper character. He had a defined look, and he could emote in a believable way, but something was missing. “We were working on BT, but we didn’t have a voice actor at the time,” explains Wilson. “We were just spitballing it. I think when we did get [the voice] in-game, that’s when it all came together. Then the personality started to shine.”

BT is just one part of a much larger experience, but he’s also the prime example of howTitanfall 2 is trying to be different than its predecessor. Whereas the original was a multiplayer shooter where you could pilot mechs, the sequel is looking to build on that, fleshing out the sci-fi universe with a real story and turning titans from disposable machines into integral parts of the universe. And for Emslie, the art and design of a character like BT are key to getting those points across.

“It’s our job in the art department — not only with the characters, but with everything — to ensure that every pixel and polygon explains and legitimizes what’s happening on-screen.”

New Resident Evil 7 demo announced with terrifying trailer | ESIST

An update for the Resident Evil 7‘s Beginning Hour demo will has been released on PS4. The “Twilight” demo, as Capcom is calling it, will allow players to explore “more of the mysterious, derelict mansion” featured in the original.

“Now is your chance to investigate on your own if you haven’t had the chance to before, as both newcomers and veterans of Beginning Hour will be able to see what’s changed in the run-down rooms and decrepit corridors,” Resident Evil community manager, Morgane Toulemonde, explains on the PlayStation Blog.

Along with the new version of the demo, the publisher has also a trailer for the full game. It shows a little more of the Baker Mansion, where much of the game seems to be set. The Baker family also make an appearance, and they’ve got some rather gruesome dinner plans. It’s worth noting that this content is completely separate from the demo and unique to the main game.

The PSVR Sessions: Battlezone| ESIST

With the launch of PlayStation VR in North America, we’re entering a new era of gaming, one that places players directly into the worlds that developers so lovingly create. To prepare for this amazing next chapter in PlayStation history, we all donned that PlayStation VR headset and sampled a bevy of upcoming PlayStation VR titles.

One of our absolute favorites was Battlezone, a PlayStation VR launch game from Rebellion. With a full-featured campaign, incredible visuals, and intense combat, Battlezone is sure to dazzle new PlayStation VR owners this October. Here’s what we thought (and felt) when we climbed into the cockpit!

Holy mackerel does Rebellion know how to design a cockpit. The moment I strapped into Battlezone on PlayStation VR, I felt the comfort of thick steel between me and the enemy troops, the green of the weapons interface glowing up at me from the console. Also, I’m an absolute sucker for a theatrical launch sequence (Thanks, Evangelion). So rocketing through an underground tunnel before doing a systems check lends tremendous weight to the immersion.

Once I hit the battlefield (Zone?), the smooth combat shines like neon. Aiming is tight, the movement is buttery, and the pace makes Battlezone one of my favorite VR experiences to date.
–Ryan Clements

It might sound silly, but some of my favorite moments in virtual reality are the ones where you’re not actively doing anything. The beginning moments of Battlezone are a perfect example: the scene opens in a dark cockpit, but as the shields around you retract, the inside of your tank is bathed in bright, colorful light — an effect that’s impossible to convey via words or simple screenshots.

After initial combat preparations, you roll toward an inclined tunnel leading to your battlefield. The swell of music that accompanies this ascent invokes the same feeling of giddy anticipation that Disneyland fanatics might associate with the beginning moments of Space Mountain. Or maybe that’s just me. Either way, I can’t get enough of it.

Hunted Devs Investigating The Signal From Tölva | ESIST

Where Are They Now? we revisit Jim Rossignol. You might remember Rosso co-founded RPS in 1873 but couldn’t resist the bright lights of Game Development City. Packing his bindle and hitting the road, he co-founded Big Robot, the studio we last saw with survive-o-shooter Sir, You Are Being Hunted. But where has Rossignol been since then? What happened to Big Robot? Did the bright lights lure another innocent soul to ruin on the technorocks?

Nah mate, they’ve been quietly working on The Signal From Tölva [official site], a first-person explore-o-shooter about robots on an alien planet.

Big Robot today announced the shooter. It’s set on an alien planet which has been emitting a mysterious signal. Handily the surface is crawling with robots, which you can handily hijack from your cosy remote spot. If you die, hey, you’ll simply connect to a new robot.
