There’s a Dark Souls Trilogy collection coming to PS4 and Xbox One

Bandai Namco has unveiled a new collection of all three Dark Souls games, creatively titled the Dark Souls Trilogy, and it’s coming to Xbox One and PC on October 19th.

Specifically, the Dark Souls Trilogy bundles together the spruced-up Dark Souls Remastered that released in May, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin – which makes some smart but subtle tweaks to the series’ much-maligned but still excellent-despite-what-anyone-else-says second outing – plus Dark Souls 3: The Fire Fades Edition.

Better yet, the new collection also includes all DLC released for the series; that’s Dark Souls 1’s stellar Artorias of the Abyss, Dark Souls 2’s excellent DLC offerings – Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King, and Crown of the Ivory King – and Dark Souls 3’s admittedly rather variable expansions, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City.

According to Bandai Namco, the Dark Souls Trilogy will be a physical release, and squeezes all three games into one shiny steelbook case for $79.99 USD (around £62). Regrettably, this western offering is considerably less fancy than the Japanese Dark Souls Trilogy box set that released at the start of the year, featuring an encyclopaedia, art prints, soundtrack CDs, and even a tasteful set of bookends. Admittedly, that version did cost around £330.

Still Japan-only, sadly.

Of course, October 19th is also the same day that the original Dark Souls arrives on Switch in the form of the console’s long-delayed Dark Souls Remastered release. So while Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners are slowing working their way through From Software’s complete fantasy RPG opus, Switch owners get to be thankful that they’re finally allowed to play the first game five months after everybody else.

After a delay, Dark Souls Remastered will be launching in October on Switch alongside of its amiibo

Solaire returns

Dark Souls: Remastered was supposed to see a simultaneous worldwide release on May 24 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

It would have been a monumental feat especially since the announcement of the Switch version came out of nowhere initially, but unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be, and Bandai Namco delayed the Switch edition until an undetermined date. Well it’s been determined: October 19. It’ll arrive on the system with the also delayed Solaire amiibo, which has been particularly hard to get in some regions, with some stores even canceling pre-orders en masse.

Something tells me they’re actually ready this time, because while fans asked every week “when’s Souls,” they didn’t announce it by way of a special occasion or a event, but on a random Tuesday. A network test will happen at some point before release, so we can see their progress for ourselves at that point.

As a recap, Bandai Namco reconfirmed to Destructoid in a statement that the Switch version will sport 1080p visuals in TV mode, 720p in portable mode, and 30FPS for both. It’ll still support the same six player count for other Remastered editions and will have dedicated servers.

Dark Souls: Remastered is half-price for owners of the original PC game after all

Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to PC Gamer

In January, despite some confusion, Bandai Namco assured us existing owners of the original Dark Souls would not receive money off its incoming Remastered edition. Now, the publisher has confirmed that they will.

Billed as a “loyalty discount”, owners of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition can pick up Dark Souls: Remastered at half-price when it hits Steam on May 25, 2018.

Moreover, the Prepare to Die Edition—which costs £20/$20 at present and comes with the base game’s DLC—will be removed from Valve’s digital storefront entirely as of May 9. It will however remain playable for existing owners.

I hardly need an excuse to return to Lordran, but with the Switch variation delayed till later this year, 50 percent off the remake on PC appeals to me. I hear the console version looks good, but will, or even can, the remaster outdo the standard set by PC mods? That remains to be seen. Let us know your thoughts on the Remastered discount in the comments below.
