Fortnite Battle Royale – the free-to-play last-man-standing phenomenon – is due to launch imminently for iPhone and iPad, and this is how it looks on the smaller screen:
Fans expect Fortnite Battle Royale’s iOS launch to take place any moment now, although developer Epic is keeping schtum as to exactly when this will be.
Android users will get their version of the game “in the next few months”.
Fortnite’s smartphone versions are designed to be as close to their PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bigger brothers as possible. Gameplay takes place on the same map with the same events and regular content additions.
The main difference? We’ll have to see how those touchscreen controls feel.
Last week, Epic confirmed PC, smartphone and console owners would be able to play together – although PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will not be matched with each other. Both Epic and Xbox boss Phil Spencer have expressed dismay at this – and pointed the finger firmly at Sony for not allowing full cross-platform play to be possible.

According to Eurogamer.net
In an instant, it became my most anticipated game of 2018. Kunos Simulazioni, developers of the brilliant Assetto Corsa, had bagged the rights to the Blancpain GT series – perhaps motorsport’s healthiest championship, and certainly one that boasts the most diverse manufacturer participation with Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, Audi and McLaren all taking part. Not a bad list, really, and the racing’s more than half decent too.
What is it that makes the prospect of Assetto Corsa Competizione, as the officially licensed game is to be called when it hits Early Access this summer, so exciting? It’s a long overdue appearance of a game that represents real motorsport outside beyond the world of F1, and one that promises the kind of authenticity you just can’t find anywhere else. I don’t need detailed career modes, loot boxes full of car mods or pages of fictional emails to scroll through; just give me a season of real races against real teams and drivers run to real rules, governed by a simple points table, and you’ve got everything I need.
And in Assetto Corsa Competizione it looks like we’re finally getting the successor to GTR 2 that I’ve pined for for years. Indeed, you’ve got to feel a little sorry for Simbin’s UK studio that’s quietly working on GTR 3 – a large part of the appeal of GTR 2 was how it co-opted the FIA GT Championship, starring the Spa 24 Hours as its centrepiece, and now Assetto Corsa Competizione is taking on that series’ spiritual successor and getting Belgium’s endurance classic to boot. The licence is a large part of the appeal, so there must have been some competition over it.
“It was a very delicate negotiation, so it was necessary to keep the utmost secrecy until all the pieces fell in place, and it was not easy because the management of many aspects related to licensing is now different from the past,” Marco Massarutto told our friends over at Eurogamer Italy. “The SRO company that holds the rights for the Blancpain GT Series was more than happy to receive our proposal – they already knew Assetto Corsa and the idea to jointly produce an official video game based on their league intrigued them right away, but we weren’t the only players in the negotiations.”
The new licence – and the expectations that it brings – means an all-new Assetto Corsa, now built on Unreal Engine 4 which will help facilitate dynamic day/night transitions and weather; as you’d want for a game that looks to replicate the Spa 24 Hours, which despite its summer timing is always partial to a downpour or two.
“The UE4 particle system allows to efficiently simulate a large number of effects: from drops to rain spray, sparks, and more,” Massarutto says of the upgrade. “Trees, vegetation and public will be animated and in 3D, which will make the racing environments much more alive and immersive. It is one of the features where we have changed our approach compared to the past, opting for the kind of “staging” that the public thinks can be found in a circuit and that derives mainly from what it’s seen on TV during F1 and MotoGP races.”
A lot of it’s still up in the air – it’s uncertain what size fields will be supported, with the engine still being optimised, and features such as VR and triple-screen support are still under evaluation. “Let’s not forget that it is a constantly evolving engine and Epic is always very interested in keeping their software/hardware compatibility level the highest possible.”
Likewise, console versions, while very much being factored into the designs, sound like they could be someway off – indeed, reading between the lines of Massarutto’s answers, you might even have to wait until PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox to see them. The one thing you need to know right now, though, is that PC versions are very much the priority for the time being.
“We’re developing the game with UE4, and that allows to port the game on different formats and also in terms of gameplay and user interface, we are developing AC Competizione meeting all requirements to be able to publish on consoles,” Massarutto says. “With this in mind, the choice of which platforms will be supported and when is first of all a question of performance: once we will have reached the best optimisation we will be able to attain on PC, we will check if the current generation of consoles can guarantee the quality level we want to achieve for the console versions of Assetto Corsa Competizione.”
Assetto Corsa Competizione is also, with any luck, going to benefit from a focus on more thoroughbred machinery – I still think the original Assetto Corsa’s handling is best in class when it comes to road cars, though I’m not entirely convinced that’s the case with its race cars (though it’s not as if I have that much experience of driving the latter to make a fair assessment). The Blancpain field makes up their lap times in very different ways, too, so it’s going to be interesting to see how Kunos brings each car’s characteristics to the fore. Beyond that, there’s a general overhaul of the handling that should benefit every car in the game.
“If you look at our development history, you will see that Ferrari Virtual Academy was an evolution of his predecessor netKar PRO, while there is a big generational gap between these two games and Assetto Corsa. With AC Competizione there will be another jump, in all respects. The physics will benefit from our past experience and a new approach on tire models and deformations, on transmission, suspension and aerodynamics that are all more in-depth and specific related to the sports series we are reproducing.”
There’s more that entails, too – driver swapping is in for the endurance races in both single-player and multiplayer – while the full calendar and team line-up is also going to make the cut (which means Zolder and Paul Ricard are to be added to Assetto Corsa’s existing line-up – all of which are getting an overhaul in their move over to a new engine). It’s nothing less than the official game of the Blancpain series – a simple prospect, but if all the pieces fall in place, it’ll be nothing less than one of the most exciting racing game for years.

‘It’s classic Steven Spielberg’
Ready Player One may not be the disaster many people assumed it would be.
It only took minutes after the film screened at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas this weekend for positive reactions to start rolling in. Film critics who managed to get into the screening lauded Spielberg’s technical skills, calling it one of his most accomplished films to date. Even director Robert Rodriguez came out of the film with nothing but astonishment for Spielberg’s achievement.
That sound you’re hearing is the release of bated breath that Ready Player One fans have been holding since the film was first announced. There were concerns that even with Spielberg at the helm, Ready Player One would be ruined — and that was just one sect of the internet. Other critics were concerned that Ready Player One would be nothing more than nostalgia-bait; a sea of cute references without purpose.
Although there were some concerns from a few audience members, Ready Player One seems to be a crowning achievement for Spielberg. Here are some of the best reactions from the premiere:
Positive reactions
Ready Player One is a pop culture extravaganza. A truly one of a kind film that combines video games, tv, movies, music, & action figures into one huge crowd pleasing film. Prepare to be wowed & see this on the biggest screen with the best sound system possible. #ReadyPlayerOnepic.twitter.com/Tj6QuqI9oF
#ReadyPlayerOne is classic Steven Spielberg. It’s got the references, the ferocious effects and the great ‘80s soundtrack, sure, but also the charm, the heart, the humor and a fantastic Alan Silvestri score. I loved it & so did this #SXSW crowd. Be excited for it! pic.twitter.com/xwPOGwXDxd
Went into READY PLAYER ONE skeptical as hell. Came out largely as a joyous convert. I have a handful of issues with the structure and characters, but it improves on the book in important ways, the action is riveting, and I really bought the humor. #readyplayerone
What a fantastic love letter to games and pop culture from Mr. Spielberg! An awesome book is now an awesome film! Every gamer should see Ready Player One. Super fun, extremely satisfying and offers a ton of new things even for book readers! #AJsBadAssSealOfApproval
TOTALLY engrossed in every second of @readyplayerone. It is one of the most technically brilliant things I have EVER seen. Spielberg is one of the few directors who could orchestrate this kind of visual symphony that SO many people will enjoy. Pretty amazing.🎮
#ReadyPlayerOne posits a corporate big wig who exploits fan culture for profit as its villain. The irony of that is giving me a headache. This is no love letter to pop culture. It’s a crass play to nostalgia; it offers nothing new or exciting.
Genuinely still shifting through my #ReadyPlayerOne feelings but it’s telling that some fanboys have already yelled at me for not coming out of the gate singing its praises. That’s exactly the culture way RP1 attempts to grapple with.
…the bad narration (a narrative crutch) in intro doesn’t work. Might’ve been in better hands with an indie director who focused on human story & class disparity which is better explored in the book. But there are a ton of references. Overall feels dated. 2/2 #ReadyPlayerOne
It sounds like the good qualities mostly outweigh the bad, but you’ll be able to see for yourself in a couple of weeks. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29.

Sony still not up for multi-format Battle Royale
Microsoft’s Phil Spencer made an appearance on twitter this weekend to briefly show his support of Epic Games’ juggernaut Fortnite going cross-play on all formats.
After a Fortnite fan posted a tweet telling Spencer that they were hoping for cross-play to be implemented between PS4 and Xbox One players, the Xbox head simply and succinctly replied “Me 2”. This was then amusingly followed up by the Fortnite twitter themselves, who replied to Spencer with “We 3”.
But, currently, all of this is merely wishful thinking, as Sony are notoriously against the concept of PS4 players cross-fraternizing with Xbox owners. While both companies are willing to cross-play with the PC format, in games such as Street Fighter V, Minecraft and Killer Instinct. Sony still seem dead-set against Team Green and Team Blue meeting on the battlefield.
The Fortnite party is set to get even bigger, with recent news that not only is a mobile port of the game on the way, but that too will feature cross-play with all other formats. The Battle Royale player base is set to grow and grow.

Weapon Traits can seriously change the way you play Vermintide 2, and there’s quite a few of them. Here’s how they all work.
A major part of the character progression and build process in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is the concept of weapon traits. These special bonus stats can improve your abilities quite a bit, and crucially they can help to determine and shape your entire approach to combat. Each trait is unique and will play into certain types of play – so it’s important to understand them all as you plan out your strategy for dealing with the enemy hordes.
Weapon traits are a major reason why you might want to go grinding for loot or attempt to game Vermintide 2’s loot system, in fact, since grinding to get a weapon with the trait you want to drop might be very tempting. On this page, we’re going to run down the weapon and item gear traits, listing each and explaining what they do – ideal for you planning how to best approach things with your character class of choice.
Melee Weapon Traits
These traits can be found on any melee weapon. Remember, each melee weapon type in the game is unique to a specific character, so these can’t be transferred between characters.
Heroic Intervention – Assisting an ally under attack grants both players a damage absorption shield for a short time
Off Balance – Blocking an attack increases the damage the attacker takes by 50% for 3.0 seconds
Opportunist – Increases push strength by 50% when used against an attacking enemy
Parry – Timed blocks reduce stamina cost by 100%
Resourceful Combatant – Melee critical hits reduces the remaining cooldown of your career skill by 2.0%
Swift Slaying – Critical hits increases attack speed by 20% for 5.0 seconds
Ranged Weapon Traits
As with the above, these ranged weapon traits can appear on any ranged weapon, but remember that each ranged weapon is unique to a specific hero.
Barrage – Consecutive attacks against the same targets boosts attack power by 5.0% for 5.0 seconds
Conservative Shooter – Headshots replenish 1.0 ammo
Heat Sink – Critical hits remove 4.0 overcharge
Hunter – Critical hits increase attack power by 25% against targets with the same armor class for a short time
Inspirational Shot – Headshots restores stamina to nearby allies
Resourceful Sharpshooter – Ranged critical hits reduces the remaining cooldown of your career skill by 2.0%
Scrounger – Critical hits restore 2.0 ammo
Thermal Equalizer – Weapon generates 20.0% less overheat
Charm Traits
In Vermintide 2 charms all relate to the use of potions, something you’ll be doing a lot in order to stay alive. As such their item traits are related to potion consumption…
Concoction – Drinking a potion grants the effect of all other potions. Duration reduced by 50%
Decanter – Increased duration of potions by 50%
Home Brewer – 25% chance to not consume potion on use
Proxy – Consuming a potion spread the effect to the nearest ally
Necklace Traits
Necklaces are an extra form of protection, and while they’re not much in the armor their traits do allow you to heal naturally in some interesting ways, providing vital life-saving buffs.
Barkskin – Reduces damage taken by 50% for 10.0 seconds after using healing supplies
Boon of Shallya – Increases effectiveness of healing on you by 30%
Hand of Shallya – Healing an ally with a medpack also heals you for 35.0% of your missing health
Healer’s Touch – 25% chance not to consume healing item on use
Natural Bond – Grants passive health regeneration but can no longer heal yourself
Trinket Traits
Trinkets refer to the gadgets you can pick up and use throughout the world of Vermintide 2, though for the most part this refers to explosives and grenades that are used to blast enemies to shreds. The gear traits match that…
Explosive Ordnance – Increases grenade explosion radius by 50%
Grenadier – 25% chance to not consume grenade on use
Shrapnel – Increases damage taken by bombed targets by 20% for 10 seconds.

According to Nintendo Life | Latest Updates
Our good chums over at Digital Foundry certainly do like to look to the future when it comes to gaming tech.
Having debated the benefits of the PS4 Pro and the more recently released Xbox One X, both of which offer substantial benefits to gameplay performance on existing games, industry veteran Richard Leadbetter turns his attention to the Nintendo Switch.
Could a future Nintendo Switch hardware revision realistically use NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor to extend the lifespan of Nintendo’s portable powerhouse?
Of course the answer is a resounding yes, but there is so much more to unpack on the subject and it’s fascinating to hear Richard’s thoughts, either in the video above or the written article over on Eurogamer.
We’ve already seen hardware revisions such as the Nintendo DSi and New Nintendo 3DS in the past of course, so Nintendo is no stranger to adding more power to their portable gaming devices. While there were a small number of exclusive games for the DSi and the New Nintendo 3DS, existing games also featured benefits in loading more quicker and improved frame rates.
However, would a more powerful Switch upset the apple cart? Would developers want to risk splintering the market by making their games run better on the newer hardware? This is an issue which faces many PS4 and Xbox One developers at the moment, but it would seem that gamers are now more accepting of having to upgrade their systems during a single console cycle.
Let us know your thoughts on a future revision of the Switch hardware. Would you pay a bit extra for a Nintendo Switch Pro Edition?

It’s been a hard few years for Halfbrick.
Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick Studios reportedly laid off over 30 people on Monday.
A report from CNET citing multiple sources claims Halfbrick cut its workforce by over half. Known best for free-to-play games like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, the Australian studio was touted as one of mobile gaming’s earliest success stories but things have not been going so well over the last few years.
After large artist lay-offs in 2015 and the closing of its Sydney office in 2016, recent reports indicate that the company’s plan to create new IP is being scaled back. Instead the remaining staff will apparently focus on “maximising opportunities” for the company’s two most famous games.
We wish the best to all those affected, and if for some reason you haven’t heard of the brilliantly addictive Fruit Ninja, check out our review here.

According to PC Gamer
Goat Simulator is an unusual game, not just because it’s really bad but because the Steam description warns that it’s really bad and actually suggests that people should spend their money on something else, like a hula hoop or a pile of bricks. But now Coffee Stain Studios has a mysterious new project in the works called Satisfactory, and it said that this time it’s actually trying really hard to make a decent game.
The teaser doesn’t actually reveal anything about the game (sorry), nor does the threadbare press release that brought it my way. There are hints of something maybe a wee little bit sinister to it, however. The cute little lizard-pupper who’s trying to enjoy his lunch appears to have been interrupted by some kind of construction happening behind the camera; there’s industrial noise and a spot of what I assume is welding, and then a large-sounding vehicle, like a dump truck, starts up and takes off, close enough to cast a visible shadow on the little guy.
The game logo suggests something along the same lines, with flora and fauna along the bottom half, smokestacks and power lines across the top. And let us not forget the name: Satisfactory.
It’s not much to go on, but it’s all we’re getting for now. “If I told you more it wouldn’t be a teaser now, would it?” Coffee Stain CEO Anton Westbergh said.
Goat Simulator jokes aside, this will hopefully be—and could be—a good game, or at least a proper one: Goat Sim was a goat rodeo but before that Coffee Stain made the Sanctum FPS/tower defense crossovers, and they were quite decent. More about Satisfactory will be revealed over the coming months, and Coffee Stain is taking signups for an alpha test that may or may not begin in May at satisfactorygame.com.

Team17 have sent word of the next game to be published under their label. It’s Planet Alpha from Denmark based independent developer Adrian Lazar.
PLANET ALPHA is an atmospheric side-scrolling platform adventure game. Combining fast platforming, creative puzzles, stealth mechanics and a unique art style to create an unforgettable experience.
Lazer previously worked at IO, working on Hitman (2017) and Hitman: Absolution. Since leaving in 2015 he’s been working on this game with a small team to support him along the way.
PLANET ALPHA is the work of passion of a small but very ambitious team. We are building something special and we’re putting everything we have into it. Developing the game for over 4 years has been a roller coaster, so when we looked for a publisher we were very selective.
The game will be released on the Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2018.

If you’re looking forward to the Final Fantasy VII remake, it’s not a bad idea to go over everything your kindergarten teacher taught you about patience. A recent job listing from Square-Enix indicates the studio’s on a hiring spree for the game (translation via Gematsu), and it needs a whole lot of warm bodies to help get this thing done.
“We’re not moving another step forward on this project until someone gets me a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chocobo. Extra-crispy.””[W]hile we are reaching a satisfactory level in terms of reproducing the original title in high-quality graphics, we have come to the conclusion that we should aim for even higher quality in order to meet the expectations of fans,” the latest job listing states. It then puts out a call for “[C]ore members of various positions such as level planner, battle planner, designer, engineer, etc. including existing members of the development team.” In other words, Square-Enix is looking to hire the kinds of people who actually turn games from wishes and ideas into tangible things.
This latest push might be Square-Enix adding onto its established remake staff in hopes of getting the game out the door before the Four Horsemen take their last ride. After all, the original game came together in under a year once the staff count ballooned past 150 people. Maybe it’s wishful thinking. Modern game development is a foreign beast compared to the late ’90s, and Square-Enix will be Square-Enix, i.e. slow with its major releases.
Moreover, there’s an unspoken worry in the recruitment notice, an understandable desire to live up to people’s expectations for the project, and a fear of potentially letting them down. Square-Enix has seemingly planned itself into a corner. It needs to either give us a good game that won’t please everyone, or it should call the whole thing off. For now, those of us who long for this phantom game will have to wait.

If there’s one thing that gets my motor running, it’s a rad looking platforming game. And when that platforming features combat and the open-ended nature of a Metroidvania, then yeah, you can just sign me right up. So I was pretty stoked to come across a game called JackQuest – The Tale of the Sword in our forums the other day, as it looks to embody all those things I love so much. The game comes from Jose Neto aka NetoX, whose previous iOS releases include Orbital [Free] and MadRobot X [Free]. In the developer’s own words, “If you enjoy challenging bosses, jumping on walls, discovering secret passages, and collecting items to explore new areas, JackQuest is your game!” Here are a couple of quick animated gifs so you can see what it’s like in motion.
Currently there is a demo build of JackQuest that people in our forums are testing, and so far the feedback has been very positive, with the only criticisms being in regards to difficulty and some virtual control issues. Exactly the types of things that can be tweaked and fixed during a testing period! The other complaint is that the demo build is too short, so that also bodes well for the full game if people are already wanting more of it. While it’s unclear how many more testers are needed, feel free to stop by the forum thread to inquire about testing as more builds are already underway and future builds will have additional content. When JackQuest is finished, the current demo portion will be free to download and play with a one-time IAP to unlock the rest of the game.
