Your daily selection of the hottest trending gaming news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on PlayStation.Blog.Europe August 29, 2018 at 11:11AM.)

Hey everyone! Today we are happy to announce our official release date for The Forest: 6th November 2018.

The Forest casts you as a father looking for his missing son after you both survive a passenger plane crash. You’ll have to find food and water, and as night approaches build a fire and shelter to keep warm. Although tranquil at first, you soon find there is something sinister lurking in the trees.

Complete freedom

Our game encourages creativity. The game doesn’t tell you what to do, so everyone will experience their own version of the story. We try to give players as many options as possible and it’s been surprising for us how different individual playthroughs can be. Some players will focus on combat and exploration, whilst others will focus on building the most insane base possible.

Users have discovered two methods for getting Nvidia GPUs to work with FreeSync

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on KitGuru August 30, 2018 at 06:12AM.) – Cover Image via xtremegaminerd

After Nvidia first unveiled G-Sync to the world, work on an open standard was well under way. Today, we know that standard as ‘FreeSync’, which enables variable refresh rates through DisplayPort and HDMI. Over the years, Nvidia users have been locked down to G-Sync and have been unable to take advantage of cheaper FreeSync monitors, but this week, two work arounds have come to light for the first time.

Recently on Reddit, two users have come forward with different methods of tricking an Nvidia GPU to work with FreeSync. The key thing to remember is that in both cases, you will need some AMD hardware. The first method comes from Reddit user ‘bryf50’ and involves having two graphics cards in your system, an AMD one and an Nvidia one. The AMD card would need to be your display driver but in some games, you can switch between the rendering GPU. In these cases, you can load up a game on a FreeSync monitor with a Radeon GPU first and then switch to the Nvidia GPU in-game, which will leave FreeSync active. So for instance, you could pick up a cheap Radeon RX 500 series graphics card for your system and bypass Nvidia’s roadblock.

Forget 4K TVs — 8K televisions are already here

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Yahoo Tech September 1, 2018 at 04:12PM.)

BERLIN—Despite the fact that 4K TVs remain short on Ultra High Definition 4K content outside of some streaming services and Blu-ray discs, three of the biggest television manufacturers are pushing the limits of screen resolution even higher by introducing their own 8K sets.

“The time has come for us to champion the next era in screen resolution,” Samsung U.K. TV marketing director Guy Kinnell said at that firm’s press conference Thursday morning at the IFA tech trade show here. “Viewers can see what they’ve never seen on a TV before.”

But the 8K sets introduced by Samsung, LG and TCL—each offering 33,177,600 pixels instead of the 8,294,400 pixels found on 4K TVs—don’t deserve your dollars. They offer exponentially less stuff to watch in their native resolutions, the extra pixels are noticeable by the human eye at most viewing distances and they use more power.

“8K is overkill,” said Mark Vena, senior analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. In this case, more is not better. It only equals more money gone from your bank account.

Some users facing 2 month wait times before they can unlock the bootloader on their Xiaomi device

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on xda-developers September 1, 2018 at 01:41AM.) – Cover Image via Onphones

While unlocking the bootloader of a Xiaomi phone running MIUI is possible, it’s not as easy as it is on phones like the Google Pixel 2 or OnePlus 6. Excluding the Android One smartphones (Mi A2, Mi A2 Lite, Mi A1), you can’t unlock the bootloader of Xiaomi devices with the standard fastboot commands out of the box. Instead, you need to use their Mi Unlock tool. To combat resellers that try to sell devices with modified software, Xiaomi added checks to the bootloader unlocking process which include a waiting time after the initial request is made. Initially, the waiting time was 3 days, but earlier this year the waiting time increased to 15 days. Now, some users are seeing waiting times as long as 2 months.

Several users on the XDA forums, on Reddit, and on the MIUI forums report seeing messages telling them to wait 2 months after their initial bootloader unlock request. People could live with a 3 day or even a 15 day waiting time, but having to wait 2 months before you can tinker with your phone is off-putting. The long wait time is concerning considering that Poco announced they would support the development community on the Poco F1.

Europe officially has more than one million electric cars

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Inhabitat August 28, 2018 at 07:07PM.)

More than a million electric cars can now be seen on the streets of Europe, thanks in part to a sales surge in the first half of 2018. Europe has reached this benchmark more quickly than the United States, which is on track to meet it later this year. Europe and the U.S. have trailed behind China, which reached one million electric vehicle sales in 2017; however, Europe’s achievement is no small feat.

Europe saw 195,000 electric cars sold during the first half of this year, a 42 percent increase from last year. This figure includes electric cars sold in the European Union as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Norway, the latter of which continues to lead the way, with the highest number of electric vehicles sold.

Bucking the Norm, Mozilla to Block Tracking Cookies in Firefox

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Threatpost August 31, 2018 at 12:36PM.) – Cover image via eff.

Web tracking has long been in the cross-hairs of privacy advocates, who say that marketers know entirely too much about individuals’ online activities. And to add insult to injury, the ubiquitous cookie system used to enable tracking also presents potential security threats, including cross-site request forgeries (CSRF). To combat these bugbears, Mozilla is planning to disable cross-site tracking by default in its Firefox browser.

The company said that it will “in the near future” start blocking tracking, while rolling out tools for users to better control the information they share with sites.

Tracking has plenty of upsides: For instance, it enables a concierge-style experience when it comes to the ads one sees on the web. Ads are a necessary part of the internet economy – free access to content is never really “free” – we of course pay with our eyeballs. And targeted ads are much more palatable than random offers, according to almost every consumer survey.

NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti 3DMark Score Allegedly Leaks, 35% Faster vs 1080 Ti

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Wccftech September 2, 2018 at 11:29AM.)

The hype surrounding NVIDIA’s RTX 20 series may appear to have settled down somewhat as media buzz begins to quiet down ahead of the embargo end date in the weeks ahead. Tech reviewers on the other hand are hard at work prepping for that big review day and leakers are working just as hard to keep the leak scene as hot as ever.

NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti 3DMark Score Allegedly Leaks, 35% Faster vs 1080 Ti

Today we’re greeted by one of the biggest leaks yet, demonstrating the performance of the company’s brand new top dog GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. According to videocardz, the 3DMark Time Spy entry was likely leaked directly by an NVIDIA or an AIB employee, because at the time it occurred no working driver for Turing had been sent out to any tech journalists that we know of.

100,000 homes in Germany now have battery-storage systems connected to the grid

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Technology – Quartz September 1, 2018 at 01:33AM.)

Germany helped make solar power cheap. As of June this year, it boasts 1 million homes that have installed rooftop solar panels. That means the country produces a lot of renewable energy—sometimes more than it can use.

At such times, German grid operators have had to pay neighboring countries or grids to use the excess electricity. Since the beginning of this year, German grids have accumulated 194 hours (paywall) with negative power prices.

Now Germany is turning to energy storage as a solution to the problem of excess electricity. On Aug. 28, an energy ministry official attended the commissioning (link in German) of the 100,000th home to install a battery-storage system that’s connected to the grid.

The best graphics cards for PC gaming

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on ITworld News August 29, 2018 at 03:06PM.)

“What graphics card within my budget gives me the best bang for my buck?”

That simple question cuts to the core of what people hunting for a new graphics card look for: the most oomph they can afford. Sure, the technological leaps behind each new GPU can be interesting on their own, but most everyone just wants to crank up the detail settings on Battlefield and get right to playing.

Last updated 8/29/18 to include the GeForce RTX 20-series graphics cards and update current pricing now that the cryptocurrency craze is over.

Answering the question can be a bit trickier than it seems. Raw performance is a big part of it, but factors like noise, the driver experience, and supplemental software all play a role in determining which graphics card to buy, too.

Let us make it easy for you. We’ve tested damned near every major GPU that has hit the streets over the past couple of years, from $100 budget cards to $1,200 luxury models. Our knowledge has been distilled down into this article—a buying guide with recommendations on which graphics card to buy, no matter what sort of experience you’re looking for.

Why The German Giants Are Flocking To Formula E

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Inside EVs September 2, 2018 at 10:01AM.)

“When have we seen, in the history of racing, Mercedes against Audi against BMW against Porsche? I don’t know if we ever have, but that sounds pretty damn exciting. That’s going to get massively good to watch.”

This is Nico Rosberg getting ever-so-slightly excited at the prospect of the four titans of German automotive manufacturing going head to head (to head to head) in Formula E within the next 18 months. As well he might, for in an improbably short space of time, the all-electric race series has gone from being an intriguing technical curio to a racing and tech-innovation showcase that carmakers simply can’t ignore.

Manufacturer interest in the series was apparent from the beginning, as Renault’s e.dams squad emerged comfortable season-one champion, but even the most optimistic daydreams of CEO Alejandro Agag would surely never have forecast ranks of blue-chip brands queueing up to join.

São Paulo-based engineering and construction company SysHaus and Brazilian architecture firm Studio Arthur Casas have designed and installed the first-ever SysHaus, a modular family residence that features a wide array of eco-friendly features. Prefabricated from 100 percent recyclable materials, the São Paulo house was constructed in just 28 days using proprietary technology that the designers say “doesn’t generate excess materials or utilize water.” The energy-saving elements of the house include a rainwater catchment and reuse system, solar roof tiles, a green roof and even a biodigester to turn organic waste into gas for the fireplace and kitchen.

Despite still being about two years away from production, the next-gen Tesla Roadster is seemingly already having an impact on the industry as a prototype.

Christian von Koenigsegg, the head of supercar maker Koenigsegg, says that the Roadster’s performance was “embarrassing” them and they had to up their game following the unveiling.

In an interview at Pebble Beach with Top Gear, Koenigsegg said that Tesla has thrown down the gauntlet with the new Roadster:

Jaunt shows off new augmented reality 360-degree full body selfies

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Entrepreneur – VentureBeat August 30, 2018 at 09:08AM.)

Jaunt made its name as a creator of 360-degree videos and cinematic VR experiences. But under new management, the company has shifted its focus to supplying mixed reality technology to other companies. And today, it is showing off some of the cool research it has been doing in volumetric capture, such as creating 360-degree digital avatars for augmented reality applications.

I tried it out at Jaunt’s headquarters in San Mateo, California, and it was quick and seamless. Jaunt showed how it can capture a 360-degree image of a person with six Intel RealSense depth cameras. Jaunt stitches the images from the cameras into a single 3D avatar, and then inserts the avatars into augmented reality streams that can be sent to mobile devices in real time. They showed how they could capture me instantly and turn it into a shareable image in no time.

AMD Moves All 7nm CPU, GPU Production to TSMC

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on ExtremeTechExtremeTech August 27, 2018 at 04:55PM.)

Earlier this year, we suggested that AMD’s decision to move its 7nm GPU production to TSMC could be a sign of trouble for GF’s 7nm ramp. Today, AMD is announcing that it will move all of its 7nm production on both CPUs and GPUs to TSMC. We already knew that TSMC was AMD’s foundry of choice for its 7nm Vega CPU, and the company had later announced that its 7nm Epyc CPUs (codenamed Rome) would be built there as well, but this is still a significant announcement for the company.

AMD’s Mark Papermaster has published a new blog post in which he writes:

If you haven’t already switched to Firefox, do it now

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Fast Company August 31, 2018 at 11:08AM.)

This week, Mozilla announced that its browser Firefox will start blocking all cross-site third-party trackers–the cookies hiding in the background that follow your clicks across the web, reporting your activity to advertisers as you move between websites.

Including these settings, by default, is the best way to protect users from inadvertently giving third parties data about users’ behavior. Just as people tend not to read long privacy policies, they also shouldn’t be expected to change the settings to disable third-party trackers on every single site they visit. As Mozilla’s head of product strategy Nick Nguyen writes on the Mozilla blog, “In the physical world, users wouldn’t expect hundreds of vendors to follow them from store to store, spying on the products they look at or purchase. Users have the same expectations of privacy on the web, and yet in reality, they are tracked wherever they go.” Trackers instituted by the site you’re visiting will remain in place.

Trackers don’t just track you–they also slow down load times for websites. Mozilla cites a study by the ad-blocker Ghostery, which found that 55% of the time required to load a website is spent loading third-party trackers. Without these trackers, sites will load faster, making the overall user experience better. Mozilla will be testing how much blocking trackers impact load times in September–if its approach to blocking trackers does reduce load times, it will roll out the same technology to the regular Firefox browser later this year. If you’re interested in trying it out now, you can download Firefox Nightly to see how the features work.

Tesla misses Model 3 production goal of 6,000 units per week, but on track for overall Q3 goal

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Electrek September 2, 2018 at 10:20AM.)

Tesla has been aiming for a production rate of 6,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of August and an overall production of 50,000 to 55,000 Model 3 vehicles throughout the third quarter.

Electrek has learned that the automaker missed the 6,000 unit production rate goal, but Tesla is nonetheless on track for its overall third quarter goal.

It follows our report from last week about Tesla being on track for a production record this quarter but slightly behind its ambitious Model 3 goal.

Bored with Netflix? As it goes global, the selection is about to explode

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Digital Trends September 1, 2018 at 07:17AM.)

Last month, Netflix missed its projections for the first time, adding only 674,000 subscribers domestically and 4.47 million internationally. That number was about 1 million less than the company had forecast. Investors panicked, stock prices of the company tumbled, and finance news headlines were made.

But as far as I’m concerned, those numbers are a good thing for you and me. Let me explain why.

Netflix added 4.47 million subscribers internationally compared to just 674,000 in the United States. Those numbers aren’t what investors had hoped for, but when we look at internal moves the company is making, we begin to understand what its future may hold — and then wax poetic about what that may mean for all of us.

Burning Man’s installations are especially crazy this year

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Fast Company – co-design August 30, 2018 at 10:08AM.)

First in line is the Orb, designed by Danish architects Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange. The gigantic reflective globe was funded by a recent Indiegogo campaign that raised $34,251 for the installation, the support structure of which required 30 tons of steel, welded over 1,000 hours, along with 1,500 hours of sewing of metallic fabric to create its 21,500-square-foot surface.

The fan-powered sphere itself is a massive 83 feet and 8 inches in diameter–1/500,000th of the earth’s surface–and is meant to “blend entirely into its surroundings and become part of the desert,” the duo explain. “The ORB is a tribute to Mother Earth and human expression.”

The idea? Reflect the Playa–the dry lake bed where Black Rock City rises–and the camps that populate it with 65,000 temporary inhabitants.

Uber, Tesla, Electric Scooters, and More Folks Who Made Car News This Week

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to wired (This article and its images were originally posted on Feed: All Latest September 2, 2018 at 07:06AM.)

Headlines

  • Just look at this Bugatti Chiron made entirely of Lego.
  • Last last week, after a fortnight of questioning and upheaval, Tesla suddenly reversed course, with CEO Elon Musk announcing the electric carmaker would stay public after all. But legal experts say the move won’t save Tesla from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is reportedly very interested in the nature of Musk’s initial take-private tweet. Nor from class action lawsuits by shareholders. Stay tuned.
  • Flying cars sound great, but they’re still a bit of a moonshot. But being a distant reality means there’s still plenty of time to make incremental engineering improvements. For example, the startup SkyRyse spoke to senior writer Jack Stewart about its plans to modify helicopters with cameras and computers so they can start to steer themselves.
  • Uber’s autonomous vehicle division this week announced a big $500 million investment from Toyota. The ride-hailing company has worked with the automaker on various projects since 2016, but that’s a big, expensive bet on self-driving tech. Uber doesn’t want to be a robo-taxi operator, and neither does Toyota, but clearly the two companies see value in each other.
  • Jack thoroughly enjoyed his test drive aboard Jaguar’s all-electric i-Pace, which included unsupressable giggles, a melting chocolate chip ice cream cone, and an efficient enough battery to evaporate most range anxiety.
  • Scooters are back, baby! Three months after ordering them gone from city streets, San Francisco announced that just two companies, Scoot and Skip, will receive permits to operate e-scooter-share during a year-long pilot project. Not among the winners: Bird, Lime, and Spin, all of which launched scooter service in March. The scooters made by Uber and Lyft were also shut out.
  • On August 25, it happened again: A Tesla Model 3 slammed into the back of a stopped firetruck. It’s unclear whether the driver was using Autopilot when the crash occurred. But it’s a good time to remind yourself why Tesla’s semiautonomous feature can’t “see” halted vehicles.
  • If your mind is occasionally boggled by the complexity of transportation systems, you’ll want to check out architect Candy Chan’s latest series of illustrations: 3-D depictions of New York City subway stations. Subway stations can feel like waiting rooms you just have to tolerate, but Chan argues these are places to be examined critically and thoughtfully, too.
  • In-house WIRED physicist Rhett Allain calculates how fast a Tesla has to move to go airborne.

Google image search is now a design tool

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Fast Company – co-design August 29, 2018 at 11:33AM.) – [Image: Future Memories]

A new design tool called Picular is built around an unlikely data source: Google image search.

Picular is a new color search tool that lets you enter any search term and presents you with a slew of options, basing all of its color choices on what pops up first in Google image search. It’s a color-picker, courtesy of internet hive mind.

For instance, if you type the word “desert” into Picular’s search bar, the tool scrapes the top 20 image results from Google and finds the most dominant color in each image. It presents these results in a series of tiles: A sea of sandy browns and oranges, with a few blues (presumably from the sky) thrown in. Each tile has the color’s RGB code that instantly copies to your clipboard when you click on the tile, making it easy to instantly try out the colors in your work.

This Industrial Blue Dye Could Help Us Build Better Batteries

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Futurism August 29, 2018 at 10:57AM.)

SOME POSITIVE PRESS. Usually, when methylene blue makes the news, it’s because the industrial dye has polluted some waterways or hurt some living organisms. But now, researchers from the University at Buffalo think they’ve found a way for the dye to actually help the environment: storing and releasing energy.

They published their research in the journal ChemElectroChem on August 13.

BLUE IS THE POLLUTION-IEST COLOR. Textile mills often use methylene blue to dye fabric (you guessed it) blue. Sometimes, the leftover dye can make its way from the mill into the environment, where it is not easy to clean up.

Apple today sent out media invites for its annual iPhone-centric event that will be held on Wednesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park Campus in Cupertino, California.

The media invites released today give a first look at the theme of the event and feature the tagline “Gather Round,” likely referencing the main ring-shaped building at Apple Park.

There are a lot of product refreshes that we could see at the fall 2018 event. First and foremost, Apple is expected to be introducing three iPhones this year: a second-generation 5.8-inch OLED device, a larger-screened 6.5-inch OLED device, and a lower-cost 6.1-inch smartphone with an LCD display.

Physicists hack the human visual system to create “ghost images”

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on New on MIT Technology Review August 31, 2018 at 05:04AM.)

Ghost imaging is one of the more extraordinary advances in optics in recent years. It produces high-resolution images using single-pixel cameras and light that has never interacted with the object in question.

The technique relies on clever algorithms to crunch the seemingly random data that a single pixel appears to gather. More on that below.

Because of this, it’s easy to imagine that ghost imaging has little relevance for human perception, since the human visual system must be incapable of processing this kind of data.

Not so. Today, Alessandro Boccolini at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a couple of colleagues demonstrate that humans can see ghost images and suggest how the technique can be used to study and exploit the visual system in entirely new ways.

Futuristic camper expands to reveal huge party deck

Your daily selection of the hottest trending tech news!

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on Curbed – All August 28, 2018 at 12:35PM.)

In the camper world, there are only so many types of vans, trailers, and RVs. Need a ton of space? Class A is your best bet. Don’t want to haul anything and like stealth camping? Check out an adventure van. It’s rare to see anything that challenges these categorizations, because for the most part, designing a brand new type of camper requires thinking way, way outside the box. Love campers and trailers? Come join our new community group.

Sometimes, however, that’s exactly what happens. Way back in 2012 New Zealand architectural and interior design firm W2 designed a camping caravan called the Romotow that—at first glance—looks a bit like a normal trailer. Push a button, however, and the center of the camper folds out, spinning around to reveal a deck area. It was the stuff of camper sci fi dreams, a concept that could reinvent camper design if only it could actually be built.

And now it has. Well, almost. The world’s first Romotow is currently under construction in Christchurch, New Zealand. A team of experienced boat builders are tackling the project—you can follow their progress here—and the Romotow should be complete in just a few months.

When Apple announced the iPhone X last September, it painted itself into a corner. With two “8s” (the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus) and a “ten”, the iPhone 9 was passed over, and a whole new Roman numbering system was on the table. Now, with three rumored new 2018 iPhones on deck for its big September 12 unveiling — said to be three different screen sizes, but all using the iPhone X-style Face ID — how will Apple designate and delineate the trio of models?

Here are some possibilities.

Go for the ‘S’

Last year, Apple broke its own iPhone/iPhone S cycle, where iPhones in every even year sees a major upgrade — often accompanied by a physical redesign — while odd years get internal updates with the suffix “S.” The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus “should” have been the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, but Apple jumped a whole number. And with its radical redesign, the iPhone X — pronounced “iPhone Ten” — leaped two more numbers up the scale, leapfrogging 9 altogether.

Rumor has it that this year Apple returns to the S update. The iPhone X successor could actually be three phones, including a 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED-screen iPhone, both of which are called iPhone XS. That’s according to 9to5Mac, which claims exclusive images and intel. A third iPhone, said to have 6.1-inch LCD screen, would be the most affordable of the three, but that wasn’t shown or named by 9to5mac.

Acer Announces Nitro XV273K Monitor: 4Kp144, DisplayHDR 400, FreeSync

According to (This article and its images were originally posted on AnandTech August 30, 2018 at 07:55AM.)

Acer on Wednesday unveiled its new Nitro XV273K display that features an Ultra-HD resolution and a dynamic refresh rate of up to 144 Hz enabled by AMD’s FreeSync technology. The new monitor brings 4Kp144 gaming with variable refresh rates to owners of AMD’s Radeon graphics cards. What is noteworthy is that Acer’s Nitro-series FreeSync-supporting 4Kp144 monitor is considerably cheaper than its G-Sync-supporting counterpart.

The Acer Nitro XV273K uses a 27-inch IPS panel featuring a 3840×2160 resolution, an up to 400 nits peak brightness in HDR mode, and a maximum refresh rate of up to 144 Hz. It is unclear whether the display is based on the well-known AU Optronics’ M270QAN02.2 AHVA panel that powers the G-Sync HDR as well as Acer’s Predator XB273K monitors, but this is a likely scenario (though it is not cast in stone as by the time the XV273K hits the market competing panels with similar specs may become available).

Acer does not share all the specs of the Nitro XV273K LCD just yet, though it has confirmed that it supports AMD’s FreeSync dynamic refresh rate technology and carries VESA’s DisplayHDR 400 badge, thus supporting HDR10.
